Book length - 304 pages Publisher - William Morrow (HarperCollins) Book Depository - www.bookdepository.com Amazon UK - www.amazon.co.uk Amazon US - www.amazon.com I voluntarily reviewed this book from Edelweiss ABOUT THE BOOK Harry Ackerson has always considered his stepmother Alice to be sexy and beautiful, in an "otherworldly" way. She has always been kind and attentive, if a little aloof in the last few years. Days before his college graduation, Alice calls with shocking news. His father is dead and the police think it’s suicide. Devastated, Harry returns to his father’s home in Maine. There, he and Alice will help each other pick up of the pieces of their lives and uncover what happened to his father. Shortly after he arrives, Harry meets a mysterious young woman named Grace McGowan. Though she claims to be new to the area, Harry begins to suspect that Grace may not be a complete stranger to his family. But she isn’t the only attractive woman taking an interest in Harry. The sensual Alice is also growing closer, coming on to him in an enticing, clearly sexual way. Mesmerized by these two women, Harry finds himself falling deeper under their spell. Yet the closer he gets to them, the more isolated he feels, disoriented by a growing fear that both women are hiding dangerous—even deadly—secrets . . . and that neither one is telling the truth. MY REVIEW ALL THE BEAUTIFUL LIES by Peter Swanson is a novel that is sure to divide the masses and I have to say I find myself somewhere in the middle when it comes to rating this book. There are moments of gripping suspense and tense atmosphere which I always love in a good thriller but there are also topics of sexual abuse portrayed as 'misunderstood' relationships that really made me uncomfortable (quite possibly what the author was aiming for!). Harry is graduating college when he gets the news that his father has died suddenly. Returning to Maine he tries to comfort his stepmother with whom he has an awkward relationship when it emerges that his father's accident may be something a lot more sinister. Add in another young beautiful woman connected to his father, and soon Harry doesn't know what to believe ... but they are hiding something from him and he is determined to find out the truth. ALL THE BEAUTIFUL LIES by Peter Swanson moves from past to present in such a way that really build a deeply-layered, character-driven plot that never bores. Like I said before there are some very adult themes that will not be for everyone but will convey how cyclical a cycle of abuse can be to the point where those involved do not even recognise it for what it is. This is a suspense story that is gritty and raw but I struggle to say exactly how I feel about it. It is very well-written which is a trademark of Peter Swanson's work but it didn't get under my skin like his other novels, nor did I connect with any of the main characters. Overall I found ALL THE BEAUTIFUL LIES by Peter Swanson to be a solid story but not what I expected. AUTHOR BIO Peter Swanson is the author of three novels: The Girl With a Clock For a Heart, an LA Times Book Award finalist; The Kind Worth Killing, winner of the New England Society Book Award, and finalist for the CWA Ian Fleming Steel Dagger; and his most recent, Her Every Fear. His books have been translated into 30 languages, and his stories, poetry, and features have appeared in Asimov’s Science Fiction, The Atlantic Monthly, Measure, The Guardian, The Strand Magazine, and Yankee Magazine. #Blogtour #Review #Extract: The Fear by C.L. Taylor @callytaylor @AvonBooksUK @Sabah_K #TheFear29/3/2018 Release date - 22nd March 2018
Book length - 416 pages Publisher - Avon Books UK Amazon UK - www.amazon.co.uk Amazon US - www.amazon.com I want to thank Sabah from www.avonbooks.co.uk for the opportunity to take part in this blog tour and for providing me with a copy of this book for review, and an extract for you all to enjoy too! ABOUT THE BOOK When Lou Wandsworth ran away to France with her teacher Mike Hughes, she thought he was the love of her life. But Mike wasn’t what he seemed and he left her life in pieces. Now 32, Lou discovers that he is involved with teenager Chloe Meadows. Determined to make sure history doesn’t repeat itself, she returns home to confront him for the damage he’s caused. But Mike is a predator of the worst kind, and as Lou tries to bring him to justice, it’s clear that she could once again become his prey… MY REVIEW THE FEAR by C.L. Taylor is a flawless novel that sucks you in from the very first line and holds you captive until the very end. Lou Wandsworth may be thirty-two, living it up in London with a good job and plenty of friends and lovers, but beneath the surface, Lou is haunted by what happened to her as a fourteen-year-old girl when she was groomed by her karate teacher and taken to France under false pretences. Mike Hughes shattered her soul all those years ago and she has never really been able to piece herself back together again as she pushes away one decent guy after another. But with her deceased father's home needing to be handled, Lou finds it a good time to return to her hometown and confront the man who took so much from her. But as soon as Lou arrives back, she realises with horror that Mike hasn't changed at all and has lined up another young girl to seduce and destroy, but this time Lou is determined to stop him, no matter what ... The topic of grooming is so horrific and, as a mother, is one I usually can't stomach reading about but as I am a huge fan of C.L. Taylor I knew I had to read THE FEAR which will really open up your eyes to how something so vile can happen - every parent should read this story! The character of Lou is so inspiring as she confronts the past and refuses to be silenced, and my heart broke for the child that she was and the child that Chloe is. Wendy was a harder nut to crack but as the story progressed, we get to see the damaged woman beneath the anger and she has a strength all of her own too. Through throwbacks and the tense drama of the present day, we get to see the entire picture unfold and as Lou finds herself in danger once again, the tense atmosphere will really overpower you as you become sick with worry for Lou and Chloe. Dark, haunting, and brimming with bravery, THE FEAR by C.L. Taylor is another excellent portrayal of the evil side of human nature and boy that ending really packed a punch. If you read crime fiction then C.L. Taylor needs to be at the top of your list. EXTRACT I had to wait so very, very long for our first kiss. He pulled away so many times before our lips finally met, denying me, telling me that I was too young and it wouldn’t be right. His reticence only made me want him more. I’d lie in bed and relive every touch, every lingering look and every soft word. I’d run a finger over my mouth, then push two fingers against my lips, imagining the weight of his mouth on mine. Fourteen years old and I’d never been kissed. I never admitted it to anyone at school but teenagers can sniff out weakness and fear the same way pigs can sniff out truffles and, somehow, everyone knew. The bullying began when I was thirteen, just before Mum and Dad split up. I’ve got no idea why. One moment I was invisible, the next I was on the bullies’ radar. It was Dad that suggested the karate lessons. They’d give me an air of confidence, he said, even if I never used the moves. An air of confidence? That’s a joke. I start as a dark green estate car pulls into the car park. It does a U-turn, then parks near the exit. The driver doesn’t get out but he does open a window and flick cigarette ash on the floor. As he does, the door to the garden centre bursts open and the girl I saw in the summer house runs down the path. AUTHOR BIO C.L. Taylor lives in Bristol with her partner and young son. She is a three times Sunday Times bestseller and her books have hit the number one spots on Amazon, Kobo, iBooks and Google Play. Cally has a degree in Psychology, with particular interest in abnormal and criminal Psychology. She also loves knitting, Dr Who, Sherlock, Great British Bake Off and Margaret Atwood and blames Roald Dahl's Tales of the Unexpected for her love of a dark tale. Her dark psychological thriller THE ACCIDENT was published in the UK by Avon HarperCollins in April 2014 and as BEFORE I WAKE in the US in June 2014 by Sourcebooks. Her second psychological thriller THE LIE was published in the UK in April 2015. It became a Sunday Times bestseller and hit the #1 slots on Amazon, Kobo, iBooks, Google Play and Sainsbury ebooks. THE LIE was published in the U.S. by Sourcebooks. CL's third psychological thriller THE MISSING was published in April 2016 and was another Sunday Times and ebook bestseller. THE MISSING was published in the U.S. by William Morrow in 2017. THE ESCAPE, her fourth psychological thriller, went to number 2 in the Sunday Times paperback chart in 2017 and won the Dead Good Books Most Unreliable Narrator award. Her fifth psychological thriller THE FEAR will be published on 22nd March 2018. THE TREATMENT, her Young Adult thriller, was the fastest selling UK YA debut of 2017. Her international bestselling romantic comedies (written as Cally Taylor), HEAVEN CAN WAIT and HOME FOR CHRISTMAS were both published by Orion in the UK. Book length - 256 pages Publisher - Dome Press Book Depository - www.bookdepository.com Amazon UK - www.amazon.co.uk Amazon US - www.amazon.com I want to thank Emily from www.thedomepress.com for the opportunity to take part in this blog tour and for providing me with a copy of this book for review. I also have a excellent guest post from Shelan which you can read further down, so thank you Shelan! ABOUT THE BOOK What is the truth? And how do you recognise it when you hear it? Jenny and Pippa are twins. Like many twins they often know what the other is thinking. They complete each other. When Pippa disappears Jenny is left to face the world alone, as she tries to find out what happened to her other half. But the truth, for Jenny, can be a slippery thing. MY REVIEW TWIN TRUTHS by Shelan Rodger is a stunning novel that will simply blow you away. Now this review is going to be a little different as this story really must be read to be enjoyed and I do not want to say too much or give too much away. Jenny and Pippa are twins and connected in a way that cannot truly be described. The story opens with Jenny as a grown woman living in Argentina, teaching English as a foreign language and expressing herself in her own unique way. Jenny sees a therapist and opens up to him and tells him her story ... or a story. But as the book proceeds, the characters and their past unfolds before us and there is so much emotion trapped within these pages that it will be hard for you to put this book down. The chapters are short and snappy which perfectly suits the overall mood of the novel, and the characters are truly unique, and I must say its hard to pin down how I felt about them. There is a melodious quality to this story as it flows from one page to another and I desperately wanted to figure out exactly what happened to Jenny and Pippa - I needed to know what was fact and what was fiction, and that twist!! Gripping, compelling, and fresh, TWIN TRUTHS by Shelan Rodger is a novel to be savoured and I highly recommend it. GUESTPOST Why do we love twists? A good twist in a novel is like a big dipper moment on a roller coaster ride – we feel the lurch in our stomach as the world we believed in turns upside down. But what is it that makes this pleasurable? Why does it excite us to be taken by surprise? Why is it so thrilling to be proved wrong (or maybe, if we had started to see it coming, to be proved right)? Yes, a good twist is entertaining, but I think there is more to it than that. I think it has something to do with the fact the twist is actually a reflection or expression of something much more prevalent in real life than we tend to assume. Real life can be a scary place, where reality is constantly changing and unpredictable. People lead double lives, pasts explode, secrets exist and take their toll, we are confronted suddenly with something outside our control, people change or reveal a whole new side to their personality. In real life, all of this is messy and ongoing. But in fiction, we can allow our fears and emotions to run wild in the knowledge that it is safe and has an end. In fiction, there is poetry in a twist. Its power to shock, to reveal, to make sense of chaos, or turn order upside down creates a frisson as the lightbulb moment hits us. The lightbulb flash is a challenge charged with adrenalin - has us racing backwards, re-evaluating everything we’ve assumed about a reality that has just transformed itself. Reality is not straightforward. We know that, and yet we tend to live as if our perception of reality is sacrosanct. We tend to live as if we know who we are, as if we really know those we love. And yet life’s road is full of unexpected twists and turns. Some are exciting, some are appalling. Some might change us completely, some might ground us even more firmly in the essence of the ‘I’ that we believe in – but they always cause some kind of evolution in our being, always create consequences in our own personal story. Fiction creates a safe playground for our fears and intuitions, a place where we can feel empathy and question the nature of reality, a place where it is easier to accept that things are not always what they seem. And the twist is a powerful way to experience that. In Twin Truths, I wanted to achieve an ending that was as much a twist for the protagonist as for the reader. A twist that exposes the elasticity of reality. Twin Truths – two truths: the truth the protagonist has lived and the retrospective truth that is discovered. In the end, which one is more real? AUTHOR BIO Shelan's life is a patchwork of different cultures. Born in Nigeria, she grew up among the Tiwi, an aboriginal community in Australia, and moved to England at the age of eleven. After graduating in Modern Languages from Oxford, she travelled to Argentina, where she spent nine years teaching and setting up a language school. Another chapter in England was followed by six years in Kenya, where she got involved in learning and development, with an emphasis on anti-discrimination. She now lives in Spain, working in international education - and writing. ABOUT THE BOOK When Annie Trebarwith unexpectedly inherits Tregavara House, her much-loved family home atop the cliffs of Salt Bay, she begins to wonder: with all the good friends and warm memories she’s made in the village, could it be her forever home? Luckily her gorgeous Poldark-lookalike boyfriend, Josh Pasco, has exactly the same idea. High on the Cornish cliffs he gets down on one knee, and Annie has everything she’s ever dreamed of. But when a summer storm causes catastrophic damage to the beautiful but aging house, Annie and Josh are faced with tumbling tiles and a massive repair bill – and a roof that’s leaked straight onto her wedding gown… Can the Salt Bay community save Annie’s house and her wedding – and give Annie the happy-ever-after she’s always wanted? MY REVIEW We are back with a bang with Annie and the wonderful community of Salt Bay in ANNIE'S SUMMER BY THE SEA by Liz Eeles. After inheriting Tregavara House, life is good for Annie and those she has come to love in this picturesque Cornish village, and setting down roots is beginning to look very appealing. But as always, life is never that simple, and Annie soon finds herself with a house that is falling apart and a wedding that may not even happen. Can Annie save the home she loves and marry her dream man in a place that has become so special to her? The third book in this series, ANNIE'S SUMMER BY THE SEA by Liz Eeles can easily be read as a standalone but I know that you will want to read the others in this witty and light series so treat yourself and buy the set! As always the setting of Salt Bay comes alive and you can smell the sea, and taste the freshness of the air as you get lost among the quirky and loveable community. The characters are dynamic, relatable, and likeable and I flew through this book in one sitting. ANNIE'S SUMMER BY THE SEA by Liz Eeles is a fresh, vibrant, and completely exciting story about love, friendship, and the value of community and is definitely worth reading. AUTHOR BIO I live on the South Coast with my husband. It's just the two of us now because our grown-up children have moved out. I do miss them, but it is nice to have more time for writing - sorry, kids! I write funny, feel-good novels set in gorgeous Cornwall, which gives me a great excuse to go there on research trips (though my husband refers to them as 'holidays'). And, having worked as a journalist and press officer over the years, I'm fortunate enough now to write novels full-time. When I've notched up the required daily word count, I enjoy reading, walking by the sea with friends, singing in a local choir, and watching TV. I love sci-fi programmes and still harbour a childhood crush on Captain Kirk. Book length - 320 pages Publisher - Penguin Books Book Depository - www.bookdepository.com Amazon UK - www.amazon.co.uk Amazon US - www.amazon.com I voluntarily reviewed this book from Edelweiss. ABOUT THE BOOK When newly widowed Elsie is sent to see out her pregnancy at her late husband's crumbling country estate, The Bridge, what greets her is far from the life of wealth and privilege she was expecting . . . When Elsie married handsome young heir Rupert Bainbridge, she believed she was destined for a life of luxury. But with her husband dead just weeks after their marriage, her new servants resentful, and the local villagers actively hostile, Elsie has only her husband's awkward cousin for company. Or so she thinks. Inside her new home lies a locked door, beyond which is a painted wooden figure--a silent companion--that bears a striking resemblance to Elsie herself. The residents of The Bridge are terrified of the figure, but Elsie tries to shrug this off as simple superstition--that is, until she notices the figure's eyes following her. A Victorian ghost story that evokes a most unsettling kind of fear, this is a tale that creeps its way through the consciousness in ways you least expect--much like the silent companions themselves. MY REVIEW Wow! THE SILENT COMPANIONS by Laura Purcell is one of those books that you simply cannot put down once you start it. Deliciously detailed, history comes alive in front of your eyes with plenty of action and gothic horror to keep you gripped for days. This novel is a treat for all of your senses in every possible way. This isn't exactly how Elsie thought her new life with her new husband would be when she finds herself suddenly widowed a few weeks after their nuptials, trapped in a house and a village that is openly hostile towards her. But Elsie is determined to try, after all, apart from the servants there is just herself and her husband's strange cousin for company. Or is there someone else present in the house? Somewhere buried in hidden rooms, are there those who have lived there for longer than many can remember ... waiting ... A dual-timeline plot, the story moves from the 16oos to the 18oos effortlessly as we learn all about the history and lives of the characters involved. With plenty of creepy moments throughout, THE SILENT COMPANIONS by Laura Purcell will make the hairs stand up on the back of your neck, and have you checking in the darkness just to be sure you are alone. Gothic, haunting, and completely mesmerising, I was completely swept along by the story and found myself constantly swaying from believing Elsie, to thinking someone was trying to push her out, to wondering if she was imagining it all - you will have to decide for yourself when you read it!! THE SILENT COMPANIONS by Laura Purcell is everything you want in a historical, gothic novel and so much more and I highly recommend it to those who love a little fear with their mysteries. AUTHOR BIO A former Waterstones bookseller, Laura is now a full time author of chilling Gothic fiction. Her ghost story THE SILENT COMPANIONS was published by Bloomsbury Raven in October 2017 and will be followed by THE CORSET in 2018. Laura has also blogged extensively about the Hanoverian monarchy. Her biopic novels QUEEN OF BEDLAM and MISTRESS OF THE COURT are the first in a series covering the lives and loves of the Georgian era queens. ABOUT THE BOOK This is a story about a city. As with all others, it’s a place of violence. There are murderers, and they live among us. This is also a tale about a couple — sometimes friends, occasionally lovers, but always partners. Dan and Olivia are fighting modern battles; the ones parents have over a lack of money, time or peace. An escalating serial killer terrifies the streets and homes. The body count rises as their relationship crumbles. Society reveals its dark side, and no one is safe. Dan and Olivia experience this first-hand as danger closes in. Will Abel’s reign of terror ever end? Who will live, and who will die? MY REVIEW Abel's Revenge by Ross Greenwood is a compelling story with relatable characters and as far removed from what I thought it would be as possible. Told from different characters points of view, we are immediately thrown into the plot as the killer, who calls this dark predator that lives inside of him 'Abel', describes to us what happens when Abel rises up and takes control of him. When Abel is in charge, terror will unfold. Then the story shifts to Dan and Olivia, a perfectly ordinary couple who have lost their spark and themselves in the routine of work, kids, and running the house. Dan is miserable and hates every part of his life while Olivia desperately wants the man that she loves to grow up and realise how lucky he is to have her and the kids. As their relationship continues to go downhill, they let us see the community that they live in, a community that is now living in fear as Abel begins his attacks. But who will be next??? First of all, I have to point out how eye-catching this cover is - definitely a cover that made me stop and look at it a few times. With this story, I expected a police procedural novel with the odd twist but ABEL'S REVENGE by Ross Greenwood turned this on its head and brings the reader onto the ground level, just an ordinary person living in a community that is terrified at what is happening. There are many possibilities as to who Abel could be - their sleazy next-door neighbour, or the creepy postman and over friendly milkman are just a few that immediately pop into my mind - but you always have that whisper of doubt as to who it really is. I enjoyed the fact that an ordinary couple and their struggles play a big part in this story as it makes the overall plot more relatable and believable. ABEL'S REVENGE by Ross Greenwood is steadily paced with plenty of grit and surprises to keep you hooked from start to finish and I highly recommend it. AUTHOR BIO I was born in 1973 in Peterborough and lived there until I was 20, attending The King's School in the city. ABOUT THE BOOK Four men. Five hours. Eight million Euros. When his alarm goes off at 7 am, bank manager Vincent assumes he is waking up to a regular working day. He couldn’t be more wrong. Minutes later, one of the most ambitious heists in Dublin’s history is underway — and Vincent finds himself at the centre of it. While his boyfriend Ryan is held at gunpoint by two aspiring gangsters, Vincent is tasked with entering the vaults of the four branches he manages to steal two million euros from each one. If he doesn’t return by midday with all of the money, Ryan will receive a bullet to the head. As each minute ticks by, it becomes clear all is not as it seems. But just who is calling the shots? And can Vincent make it back in time to save his boyfriend’s life? The clock is ticking. MY REVIEW MIDDAY by David B. Lyons is a thrilling, energetic story with plenty of surprises along the way to keep you glued to the page. Vincent has a prestigious job in charge of four banks in Dublin City and lives the high life with his lover, Ryan, in their beautiful penthouse. He likes his life a certain way and routine is key. So when he hears his doorbell ring before work one morning it is a little unusual and when he finds himself staring down the wrong end of a gun, his morning has definitely taken a turn for the worst. For two criminals have been watching Vincent and Ryan and demanded that Vincent take part in the biggest bank heist Ireland has ever seen. If Vincent doesn't do what he is told, Ryan will be murdered. Oh, and the clock is ticking so there is no time to waste ... Set over the course of this particular morning, each chapter tells us the time and is told from one of the four main characters points of view. Well-paced with plenty of tension and intrigue, we are soon caught up in the action and I have to say I felt sorrier for Vincent then Ryan most of the time. The two criminals are Jack and Daragh, with Jack being the brains behind it all and Daragh being a completely unlikeable character from start to finish. What I really enjoyed about this book was the fact that even though we know the general plot going in, there are still true moments of shock and surprise that I certainly did not see coming which is essential in a good crime story. I also loved that it was based in Ireland too! MIDDAY by David. B. Lyons is definitely a great read and I look forward to more from this author. AUTHOR BIO David B. Lyons is a former award-winning journalist-turned-author. He is a writer of psychological thrillers, the first of which - Midday - was compared to the writing of Quentin Tarantino by Bookstormer: "For me he is the Tarantino of the book world." Not a bad start to life as an author! He signed a three-book publishing deal with Bloodhound Books at the tail end of 2017. David grew up in Dublin - the city his novels are set - but currently spends his time between Birmingham in the UK and the Irish capital. He is married to a Brummie, Kerry, and they have one daughter, Lola. He has also lectured in Creative Writing in colleges and universities in both Ireland and in the UK. ABOUT THE BOOK The lifeless body sat, hands bound, silver tape over his mouth. Patches of blood had soaked into the cheap carpet around him. Zac had spent years gaining scientific insight into the mind: human motivation and behaviour. And this scene wasn’t right... It’s been five years since Detective Zac Boateng’s daughter was murdered and her killer was never found. Now Zac is back working for the Metropolitan Police and is more determined than ever to bring the city’s killers to justice. When a man is found brutally murdered in a rundown south London shop, all fingers point to the highly intelligent and manipulative Darian Wallace. Two years ago, the victim helped send him to prison. And he’s just been released. Still grieving, Zac knows it will take everything he's got to catch this dangerously clever killer. But just as he feels he’s getting closer, he realises all is not quite as it seems and he makes a devastating personal discovery. Zac has a choice to make – risk letting this killer escape or watch his daughter’s murderer get away again… An absolutely gripping thriller for fans of Mark Billingham, Peter James and Lee Child. The Murder List is one fast-paced thriller you won’t be able to put down. MY REVIEW THE MURDER LIST by Chris Merritt is the first book in this new crime fiction series and I cannot wait for the next instalment! Detective Zac Boateng is back working after losing his beloved daughter when she was shot in front of him five years ago, by a killer who was never brought to justice. Trying to get back into some sort of life, he is determined to bring murderer's to justice in his city So when he finds himself on the case of a brutal killer, Boating throws himself fully into the case, but as he begins to piece it all together, the past will come hurtling into the present and choices will have to be made ... THE MURDER LIST by Chris Merritt is fresh and compelling but it is the strength and flaws of its characters that really make it such a great read. Boateng is consumed by the loss of his daughter and is crippled with guilt for letting her down and this drives him relentlessly forward to bring justice to other families. Well-paced, energetic, and brimming with intense emotions, THE MURDER LIST by Chris Merritt is an excellent story and is sure to keep you on the edge of your seat!
