#Review: The Silent Companions by Laura Purcell @spookypurcell @PenguinBooks #TheSilentCompanions26/3/2018 Release date - 6th March 2018 (US Paperback)
Book length - 320 pages Publisher - Penguin Books Book Depository - www.bookdepository.com Amazon UK - www.amazon.co.uk Amazon US - www.amazon.com I voluntarily reviewed this book from Edelweiss. ABOUT THE BOOK When newly widowed Elsie is sent to see out her pregnancy at her late husband's crumbling country estate, The Bridge, what greets her is far from the life of wealth and privilege she was expecting . . . When Elsie married handsome young heir Rupert Bainbridge, she believed she was destined for a life of luxury. But with her husband dead just weeks after their marriage, her new servants resentful, and the local villagers actively hostile, Elsie has only her husband's awkward cousin for company. Or so she thinks. Inside her new home lies a locked door, beyond which is a painted wooden figure--a silent companion--that bears a striking resemblance to Elsie herself. The residents of The Bridge are terrified of the figure, but Elsie tries to shrug this off as simple superstition--that is, until she notices the figure's eyes following her. A Victorian ghost story that evokes a most unsettling kind of fear, this is a tale that creeps its way through the consciousness in ways you least expect--much like the silent companions themselves. MY REVIEW Wow! THE SILENT COMPANIONS by Laura Purcell is one of those books that you simply cannot put down once you start it. Deliciously detailed, history comes alive in front of your eyes with plenty of action and gothic horror to keep you gripped for days. This novel is a treat for all of your senses in every possible way. This isn't exactly how Elsie thought her new life with her new husband would be when she finds herself suddenly widowed a few weeks after their nuptials, trapped in a house and a village that is openly hostile towards her. But Elsie is determined to try, after all, apart from the servants there is just herself and her husband's strange cousin for company. Or is there someone else present in the house? Somewhere buried in hidden rooms, are there those who have lived there for longer than many can remember ... waiting ... A dual-timeline plot, the story moves from the 16oos to the 18oos effortlessly as we learn all about the history and lives of the characters involved. With plenty of creepy moments throughout, THE SILENT COMPANIONS by Laura Purcell will make the hairs stand up on the back of your neck, and have you checking in the darkness just to be sure you are alone. Gothic, haunting, and completely mesmerising, I was completely swept along by the story and found myself constantly swaying from believing Elsie, to thinking someone was trying to push her out, to wondering if she was imagining it all - you will have to decide for yourself when you read it!! THE SILENT COMPANIONS by Laura Purcell is everything you want in a historical, gothic novel and so much more and I highly recommend it to those who love a little fear with their mysteries.
