ABOUT THIS BOOK Dangerous is one thing. Deadly is something else. When Clodagh Shepherd’s curiosity gives way to obsession, her thoughts turn to revenge. In the wake of her husband’s affair and subsequent disappearance, Clo makes an impulsive decision to befriend the beautiful stranger who has stolen her life. Answering an ad for a home help, she moves into the home of her husband’s mistress and is immediately drawn into the chilling reality behind the idyllic façade of Hamptons Life. Central to her terrifying nightmare is a deadly secret—a secret someone will kill to keep. In this dark and twisting thriller, Clo proves the adage ‘hell hath no fury like a woman scorned’ with shocking consequences. MY REVIEW What have I just read?!?!? Twisted and harrowing are only two of the many adjectives I could use to describe INTO THE SILENT SEA by Claire Stibbe which should be on your to-buy list if you like the psycho in your psychological thrillers. Clodagh Shepherd wants revenge on the woman she feels has lured away her feckless husband, Ryan. Stalking her from a distance, Clo comes up with a plan to enter this woman's life so she can destroy it and destroy her from the inside out. But when Ryan goes missing and Clo finds herself living and working with her husband's mistress, she soon realises that all is not as it seems in the wealthy and stunning home of her nemesis. And as haunting and abusive secrets begin to surface, Clo may just have to adapt her plan to survive. Definitely a slow starter, INTO THE SILENT SEA soon becomes a cesspit of obsession, lies, abuse, and power and I quickly became hooked. I have to say that I really disliked all of the characters in this story, including Clo, but that may be the intention of the author, I'm not sure. But disliking them does not mean that I was indifferent to their story and I couldn't put this book down until I discovered how it all would end and exactly what had happened. Definitely a must for readers who enjoy their thrillers dark and different, INTO THE SILENT SEA by Claire Stibbe is a cracking story and I look forward to reading more from this author. ABOUT THIS BOOK LAW AND ORDER For as long as Samantha can remember, Hunter—a man as strong as steel, with a heart of gold—has been her hero. It came as no surprise to Samantha when she found out that the ranch-hardened cowboy who always protected her from bullies went on to become the town’s sheriff. What does surprise her is how incredibly hot he still is. And how much she still wants him… PRIDE AND PASSION And, lo and behold, Hunter still has feelings for Samantha. The long-smoldering heat of their innocent flirtation has grown into a full-raging fire. But when tragedy strikes, and their small-town community is shattered, Hunter vows to do everything he can to keep his childhood sweetheart safe. But can Samantha trust that Hunter has her best interests at heart…and that, after all these years, his love is true? MY REVIEW ONE TOUGH COWBOY by Lora Leigh & Veronica Chadwick has danger, murder, and plenty of saucy scenes to get you hot under the collar! Samantha didn't realise how much she missed her childhood home until she arrived back. It is just a shame that it is for her beloved Aunt's funeral. Working as a cop in the city, Samantha knows a suspicious crime when she sees one and she knows for a fact that her Aunt's death was no accident. Determined to use her skills to uncover the truth, there is only one other person in town that she can trust. But the sizzling chemistry between them could cause more trouble than its worth ... With a string of sudden deaths, including that of his Uncle, Hunter will do whatever it takes as Sheriff to find out what exactly is going on in his town. But he doesn't need Samantha running around on her own, getting herself into danger. Even though she is a cop, he cannot help but feel protective towards her like he used to be when she was a kid. But as they work closely together, Hunter cannot help the feelings that are developing between them. If only he can get her to trust him with her heart as well as the investigation ... I enjoyed the overall plot of this story and there was plenty of secrecy, danger, and lies to unravel to keep me interested from start to finish. There are a lot of hot and spicy scenes in this book but I have to admit that some of the descriptions didn't always work for me and were a little over the top at times. But the relationship between Sam and Hunter was a delight to watch as they skirted around their feelings and the future. ONE TOUGH COWBOY by Lora Leigh and Veronica Chadwick is sure to please romance fans around the world and is an easy, enjoyable read. AUTHOR BIO #1 New York Times bestseller Lora Leigh is the author of the Navy SEALS, the Breeds, the Elite Ops, the Callahans, the Bound Hearts, and the Nauti series. ABOUT THIS BOOK The police make a terrible discovery in a suburb of Copenhagen. A young woman has been killed and dumped at a playground. One of her hands has been cut off, and above her hangs a small doll made of chestnuts. Young detective Naia Thulin is assigned the case. Her partner is Mark Hess, a burned-out investigator who's just been kicked out of Europol's headquarters in The Hague. They soon discover a mysterious piece of evidence on the chestnut man - evidence connecting it to a girl who went missing a year earlier and is presumed dead, the daughter of politician Rosa Hartung. A man confessed to her murder, and the case is long since solved. Soon afterwards, another woman is found murdered, along with another chestnut man. Thulin and Hess suspect that there's a connection between the Hartung case, the murdered women and a killer who is spreading fear throughout the country. But what is it? Thulin and Hess are racing against the clock, because it's clear that the murderer is on a mission that is far from over . . . MY REVIEW Definitely a contender for crime fiction book of 2019, THE CHESTNUT MAN by Søren Sveistrup is a thriller like no other and will set your heart racing and your palms sweating as you turn each page. Naia Thulin is determined to exceed in her career and the last thing she needs is a new partner who has been dumped from Europol due to problems, but work with Mark Hess she must. Their first case together is the murder of a young woman who has been dumped at a local playground and what makes it even more grisly is that her hand has been cut off and a chestnut man doll is left hanging with her. But when forensics discover a fingerprint from a little girl who was killed a year ago, this case takes an even more sinister twist. When another body turns up with another chestnut man, will Thulin and Hess be able to piece together the puzzle of this terrifying serial killer and what has all of this to do with politician, Rosa Harting, who is still grieving for her daughter? Compelling, haunting, dark and twisted, THE CHESTNUT MAN by Søren Sveistrup is a terrifying read that you simply cannot put down. The chapters are short and well-paced and I found myself halfway through the book in the blink of an eye without even realising it. The setting is eerie and perfect for the story and the characters are flawed, relatable and memorable which is always a must for me. There are secret, lies, evil, and heartache and I highly recommend THE CHESTNUT MAN for all thriller and crime fiction fans as this is certain to be a book that will be on everyone's lips this year. AUTHOR BIO Søren Sveistrup is an internationally acclaimed scriptwriter of the Danish television phenomenon The Killing which won various international awards and sold in more than a hundred countries. More recently, Sveistrup wrote the screenplay for Jo Nesbø's The Snowman. Sveistrup obtained a Master in Literature and in History from the University of Copenhagen and studied at the Danish Film School. ABOUT THIS BOOK Welcome to Love Heart Lane… When Flick Simons returns to the small village of Heartcross she only expected to stay for a few days. The white-washed cottages of Love Heart Lane might be her home, but the place holds too many painful memories, and of one man in particular – Fergus Campbell. When a winter storm sweeps in, the only bridge connecting the village to the main land is swept away! As the villagers pull together, Flick finds herself welcomed back by the friends she once left behind. And as the snow begins to melt, maybe there is a chance that Fergus’s heart will thaw too… MY REVIEW LOVE HEART LANE by Christie Barlow is every bit as delightful and colourful as its stunning cover and I devoured this heartwarming story in a few hours. When Flick Simon's grandmother passes away, Flick knows that she must return to her childhood home of Heartcross in Scotland and spend some quality time with her mother who needs her. But having abandoned her old friends and the only man she has ever really loved almost eight years ago, Flick isn't sure how welcome she will be. As she settles back into her home most people are happy to see her and enfold her back easily into the community, all but Fergus who cannot forget how she destroyed his heart that night long ago. But when there is a crisis in the village Flick finds herself front and centre in helping to piece it all back together and a tentative friendship with Fergus cements the fact that she loves him completely. But Fergus has his little daughter to think about and he will not let anyone into his life that may hurt her one day ... not even Flick. Can Love Heart Lane live up to its name and mend the damage from the past or is it simply too late to go back? Engaging, emotional, and enjoyable from beginning to end, LOVE HEART LANE by Christie Barlow is the type of book that will drag you out of a tired or grumpy mood and set you up for the day. There is laughter and tears, friendship and jealousy, and a community spirit that would make your heart swell with pride throughout. I loved the setting and the image that the author painted for me and I can easily say that there was nothing that I didn't love about this story. Definitely on my list for best books this year! AUTHOR BIO Christie Barlow is the author of A Year in the Life of a Playground Mother, The Misadventures of a Playground Mother, Kitty's Countryside Dream, Lizzie's Christmas Escape, Evie's Year of Taking Chances and The Cosy Canal Boat Dream. ABOUT THIS BOOK It's the coldest winter in Hull for years. When McAvoy is told by a concerned stranger that an elderly women hasn't been seen for a few days, he goes to check on her - only to find her body encased in ice: the heating off; the windows open; the whole house frozen over. It could be a macabre accident, but when McAvoy finds a series of cryptic messages, he senses murder. Someone watched her die. As he starts to uncover the victim's story and her connections to a lost fishing trawler, his boss Trish is half a world away, investigating a mysterious death in Iceland. Hull and Iceland have traditionally been united by fishing - but in this case, they are united by a secret concealed for half a century, and a series of brutal killings that have never been linked. Until now - when the secrets of the dead have returned to prey on the living. MY REVIEW Creepy, intense, and utterly absorbing, COLD BONES by David Mark has all of the hallmarks of an excellent crime fiction novel and I struggled to put it down. What should be a straightforward call-in on an elderly resident soon becomes something a lot more sinister as McAvoy quickly realises that the old woman who froze in her bathtub was murdered, and as forensics start to paint a picture, this is a cruel and unusual crime that feels very personal. From a lost fishing trawler, unsung heroes, and a strange death in Iceland springs a darkness that knows no bounds and is determined to seek revenge on those from the past. As the bodies begin to mount up will McAvoy and his team figure out this complicated den of secrets before it is too late? Dark and extremely compelling, this is a crime fiction story that will keep you on your toes with a main character that warms your heart and makes you believe in the goodness of the world even as he wades through the evil that is everywhere around. There is plenty of ups and downs, dead-ends and misunderstandings, but I loved how the plot kept me guessing and I cannot wait to read more from this author. COLD BONES by David Mark is a must for crime fiction fans and I look forward to more from McAvoy and his colleagues. AUTHOR BIO David Mark spent his years as a crime reporter walking the Hull streets that would become the setting and crime scenes for the McAvoy novels. His first book, DARK WINTER was selected for the Harrogate New Blood panel and was a Richard & Judy pick. A Sunday Times bestseller, it was adapted for the stage at the Hull Truck Theatre and was a sell-out. It is back for a second run in November 2018. As well as the Aector McAvoy novels, Mark has written two ebook short stories featuring the same cast, and a historical crime novel, THE ZEALOT"S BONES - also set in Hull - under the name D.M. Mark. He now lives in Northumberland. ABOUT THIS BOOK Never forget. Never forgive. As a detective in the Metropolitan police, Zac is no stranger to murder cases, but this one is different. This is his daughter’s murder. Years after Amelia died, Zac is still trying to trace the police officer involved in his daughter’s death. And whilst Zac is prepared to break every rule to find the man responsible, his young and ambitious deputy, Kat, is working on a high-profile case of her own. But she knows Zac is keeping secrets from his team so she’s following his every move. When one of Zac’s informants is killed, he knows he’s close to catching his man, but before he can act, he receives a call about his son which blows his world apart… And this time, he knows he’ll stop at nothing to save his family. MY REVIEW The third book in this series, LIFE OR DEATH by Chris Merritt is an energetic and dangerous game of cat and mouse and I really enjoyed it. Zac will never give up his search for his daughter's killer and when he gets a sniff of the perpetrator he launches himself into a solitary search for justice and revenge. But Zac has no idea that the net of danger is closing in around him and is much closer to home than he could ever imagine. Gripping, well-paced, and with characters that will tug on your heartstrings, LIFE OR DEATH by Chris Merritt is a cleverly written crime fiction novel with an edge. You cannot help but feel for Zac and his family and as heartbreak and drama unfold, your heart speeds up as they try to catch the killer in time. This book can be read as a standalone but for a deeper connection to the characters and backstory, I would recommend for readers to read the series in order. LIFE OR DEATH by Chris Merritt asks the age-old question how far would you go to save your family? So sit back, relax and discover Zac's story. AUTHOR BIO As a psychologist who has worked in the NHS with both victims and perpetrators of crime, I write stories that explore why people commit serious offences and how their victims are affected. I always wrote - whether blogs, psychology articles or travel pieces - but it wasn't until 2014 that I began writing fiction. I'd spent several years working as a diplomat in Iraq and Jerusalem before I decided to go back to university and retrain as a psychologist. I completed a doctorate in psychology at King's College London in 2016. ABOUT THIS BOOK A dark family drama. How do you escape a life of conflict and abuse? Being a young girl in 1940’s Ireland isn’t easy for Molly, especially since she isn’t like others. Her family and community are wary of the beautiful child. As Molly becomes a teenager life gets harder and she loses faith in everything. Molly is surrounded in danger. She must make choices. But will she chose the right path or is she doomed to a life of misery? Will she survive in a world of violence and crime? Will The Healer ever be healed? MY REVIEW Dark, tense and utterly enthralling, THE HEALER by Sharon Thompson tells the story of a little girl who turns into a strong and determined woman against all the odds. It is the often harsh and cruel world of 1940s Ireland where we meet Molly, who is a little girl that stands apart from the community as different. Hurt by those that should protect her, we travel alongside Molly as she grows into a woman but as she tries to carve a life of happiness for herself, will she ever find someone she can completely trust? From the countryside to the city, Molly will face whatever comes her way but is she strong enough to withstand the darkness that surrounds her and let go of the evil from the past? Compelling from the very beginning, THE HEALER by Sharon Thompson is not a light, easy read, but a thought-provoking, uncomfortable story that will bring tears to your eyes and fire to your belly with the injustice of it all, as you turn the page. And while there are heavy topics dealt with throughout this book, there are also moments of such strength and inspiration, of hope and the belief that light can chase away the shadows, that will really get to you and keep your eyes hooked to each and every page. While THE HEALER is technically a sequel to THE ABANDONED where we see glimpses of Molly as an adult, it can be read as a standalone - although why buy one excellent book when you can buy two is my motto!! THE HEALER by Sharon Thompson is an emotionally-charged, stunning, heartbreaking tale that will take your breath away and I highly recommend it to all historical fiction fans. ABOUT THIS BOOK TWO BODIES One suicide. One cold-blooded murder. Are they connected? And who’s really pulling the strings in the small Swedish town of Gavrik? TWO COINS Black Grimberg liquorice coins cover the murdered man's eyes. The hashtag #Ferryman starts to trend as local people stock up on ammunition. TWO WEEKS Tuva Moodyson, deaf reporter at the local paper, has a fortnight to investigate the deaths before she starts her new job in the south. A blizzard moves in. Residents, already terrified, feel increasingly cut-off. Tuva must go deep inside the Grimberg factory to stop the killer before she leaves town for good. But who’s to say the Ferryman will let her go? MY REVIEW My eleventh book of 2019 and RED SNOW by Will Dean has completely blown me away. A suicide by a prominent member of society and owner of the liquorice factory, and a dead body that has been bludgeoned from behind and laid out with liquorice coins covering his eyes, and this is just the beginning for the residents of Gavrik. Tuva Moodyson has only just begun to move on from what happened before and is looking forward to moving on to a new place and a new newspaper. But she cannot leave this town behind without uncovering the truth behind the deaths and unravelling the mystery of the Grimberg family at the centre of it all. As she finds a way inside the factory to discover the truth, Tuva will place herself in the centre of danger but will she be able to escape in time? Dark, twisted, atmospheric, and compelling, RED SNOW by Will Dean is the perfect page-turner for thriller and domestic noir fans alike. The characters are truly unique, some strange and disillusioned, some blunt and more likeable, and the setting is a character in its own right that comes alive in the harsh conditions and makes you look over your shoulder around every turn. There are plenty of twists and turns, secrets that come to the surface, and feelings of uncertainty and doubt, and all of this combines to make this story completely unputdownable. RED SNOW by Will Dean is everything I heard it would be and more so don't waste anytime and buy it now (and you may as well buy the first book featuring Tuva, Dark Pines - you won't regret it!). AUTHOR BIO Will Dean grew up in the East Midlands, living in nine different villages before the age of eighteen. After studying at the LSE and working in London, he settled in rural Sweden with his wife. He built a wooden house in a boggy forest clearing at the centre of a vast elk forest, and it's from this base that he compulsively reads and writes.
