ABOUT THIS BOOK

Separated by time. Brought together by fate.

Indulging her fascination for the Viking language and losing herself in an archaeological dig is just what Linnea Berger needs after her recent trauma. Uncovering an exquisite brooch, she blacks out reading the runic inscription, only to come to, surrounded by men in Viking costume, who seem to take re-enactment very seriously.

Lost and confused, Linnea finds herself in the power of Hrafn, a Viking warrior who claims her as his thrall and takes her on a treacherous journey across the seas to sell her for profit. Setting sail, she confronts the unthinkable: she has travelled back to the ninth century.

Linnea is determined to find a way back to her own time, but there's a connection forming with Hrafn. Can she resist the call of the runes and accept her destiny lies here...

MY REVIEW

A riveting and eye-opening historical novel, THE RUNES OF DESTINY by Christina Courtenay has everything you could possibly ask for in a great story - danger, adventure, romance, and friendship.

After an awful car accident, Linnea is struggling with getting back to everyday life and the nightmares do not seem to be going anywhere anytime soon. So when she gets the chance to work on an archaeological dig, she jumps at the opportunity. While she usually prefers the study of Vikings and their language, the fresh air, and change of pace is what she needs right now. But when Linnea discovers an ancient brooch and reads the inscription, she suddenly finds herself back in time surrounded by a horde of Viking men, with one of them, Hrafn, claiming her as his possession. What unfolds is a dangerous and exciting adventure as Linnea tries to figure out how to survive in a time where women were captured and sold as thralls to the highest bidder, whilst also finding a way to get back to her own time. But what is unexpected is the friendships that Linnea forms, the intense feelings that begin to bloom for Hrafn, and the strength that Linnea uncovers within herself. And if the opportunity to go home arises, can she walk away from everything she has come to care for?

THE RUNES OF DESTINY by Christina Courtenay completely blew me away and I devoured it in one sitting as I simply could not put it down. While it is the second book in this series, it can easily be read as a standalone story but why have one good book when you can have two?!

I loved learning about life back in Viking times and it is obvious from the detailed and engrossing descriptions of all aspects of Viking life, that the author is an expert on the subject. The characters came to life in a meaningful way from the very beginning of this story and I genuinely connected with Linnea and Hrafn and wanted them to find the happiness they deserve. There is plenty of danger, lies, betrayals, and treachery as the characters travel towards their fate, which kept me gripped and on the edge of my seat the whole way through.

THE RUNES OF DESTINY is a beautiful tale of inner strength, love, and finding where you belong, and I cannot wait for the next book in this series!

AUTHOR BIO

Christina Courtenay is an award-winning author of historical romance and time slip (dual time) stories. She started writing so that she could be a stay-at-home mum to her two daughters, but didn't get published until daughter number one left home aged twenty-one, so that didn't quite go to plan! Since then, however, she's made up for it by having eleven novels published and winning the RNA's Romantic Novel of the Year Award for Best Historical Romantic Novel twice with Highland Storms (2012) and The Gilded Fan (2014), both published by Choc Lit.

Christina is half Swedish and grew up in that country. She has also lived in Japan and Switzerland, but is now based in Herefordshire, close to the Welsh border. She's a keen amateur genealogist and loves history and archaeology (the armchair variety).

ABOUT THIS BOOK

Can love really conquer all?
When Charlie Quinn returns to Northern Ireland, having spent sixty years in Canada, the people he left behind are shocked to see him. They presumed he was dead.
But Charlie has come back for one reason, Ella, the love of his life and a notorious child murderer. She is back in the headlines and Charlie wants the truth to finally emerge.
As he looks back at his life, we learn that nothing is as it seems.

Is Ella really a killer?

Does Charlie know more than it appears?

And can two lost souls get to live happily ever after?

Life isn’t easy. But death is the most challenging thing of all…

MY REVIEW

A compelling and darkly emotional story of love, loss, heartache, and more, THE QUIET TRUTH by Sharon Thompson is a book that will linger in your mind long after you finish reading it.

Charlie Quinn has finally returned to his home and life in Northern Ireland after sixty long years away. But this isn't some childhood dream of seeing the green fields of his childhood one last time, but a determined effort to revisit a troubled past and set the truth free. Especially with Ella, the love of his life, notoriously known throughout the land as a child murderer. As Charlie begins to tell his story, a twisted web soon begins to unfurl and the harsh reality of how women were treated in Ireland in the not too distant past comes flaring to life. But can those who need peace find it?

As always with Sharon Thompson's books, there is a dark edge of truth and history blended amongst the pages which always has an effect on me as a reader - in this instance the horrific treatment of women and children in Ireland which still has such ramifications for so many people today. But it is Sharon's characters that truly draw me in each and every time, and those in THE QUIET TRUTH are no different. I was instantly intrigued by Charlie, the old man, from the very beginning, and wanted to know what had happened to him and those he loved. From there, I quickly became immersed in the twists and turns of Ella and Charlie's story, until I found myself on the last page before I was ready. And as always with Sharon's stories, I found myself caring deeply about these characters and their lives to the point where I felt that I was right there with them.

THE QUIET TRUTH by Sharon Thompson is an excellent historical novel and I look forward to more from one of my favourite authors.
