ABOUT THIS BOOK Hope springs eternal in this enchanting Texas town. Meet Gillian Thacker. Her business: Bliss Bridal Salon. Her passion: Weddings. Her own wedding: It’s complicated. Life isn’t turning out like she’d planned. The last thing she wants is for a real-life hero to ride to her rescue when an unexpected event puts her entire future in Redemption, Texas, at risk. So what’s a broken-hearted bridal expert to do? Maybe a new set of survival skills is exactly what she needs… Tucker McBride has been proud to call himself a U.S. Army Ranger. But now that his days of service are over, he’s decided to put his expertise to use by founding a wilderness skills training school. He sets up shop in Redemption, next to Bliss Bridal, and so begins life: Part Two. Marriage has been pretty low on his agenda, but as soon as he meets Gillian, Tucker can’t help but contemplate the ultimate challenge: Convincing the reluctant bride to take his hand and leap into the adventure of a lifetime. . .until death do they part. MY REVIEW For anyone who is looking for a good old-fashioned romance that will leave you swooning, then look no further than ETERNITY SPRINGS: THE MCBRIDES OF TEXAS and TUCKER in particular. Gillian Thacker is a successful businesswoman with a great relationship with her family, and a wonderful fiancé, Jeremy, who is soon to become her husband. But when cracks begin to show in her relationship and the wedding gets called off, Gillian has to face up to the reality that something was wrong between them for a long time and that maybe she cannot trust her judgement and decisions as well as she thought. So when she becomes friends with Tucker McBride, a retired U.S. Army Ranger who is setting up his own business and figuring out his own future, Gillian knows that she cannot let herself have feelings for him - after all, look at her track record. But Tucker is a McBride and the McBrides are determined to go after what they want. But when Gillian's ex drops another bombshell on her, and a hasty decision in an exciting city leaves Gillian with even more things to figure out, will Tucker be able to convince Gillian that what they have between them is unlike anything either of them have had before and that a love like that is worth fighting for? Throw in some wonderful friendships, a few laughs, and some misunderstandings along the way, and this romance has simply got it all. The characters are so loveable, except the ones that obviously aren't, and the setting is as beautiful as it always is in Emily March's stories. I smiled, I blushed, I swooned, and I got mad alongside Gillian and I desperately wanted her to remember who she really is underneath all of her hurt and to go after what she wants in her heart. Tucker is a wonderful main character - strong and upfront but with a gentler side that makes your heart flip - and I would definitely sign up to a wilderness class with someone like him as a teacher! ETERNITY SPRINGS: THE MCBRIDES OF TEXAS - TUCKER by Emily March is everything you could want in a romance novel and more and I cannot wait for the next instalment. AUTHOR BIO Emily March is the New York Times, Publishers Weekly, and USA Today bestselling author of over thirty novels, including the critically acclaimed Eternity Springs series. Publishers Weekly calls March a "master of delightful banter," and her heartwarming, emotionally charged stories have been named to Best of the Year lists by Publishers Weekly, Library Journal, and Romance Writers of America. A graduate of Texas A&M University, Emily is an avid fan of Aggie sports and her recipe for jalapeño relish has made her a tailgating legend. ABOUT THIS BOOK JOANNE HAYNES HAS A SECRET. THAT IS NOT HER REAL NAME. And there’s more. Her flat isn’t hers. Her cats aren't hers. Even her hair isn’t really hers. Nor is she any of the other women she pretends to be. Not the bestselling romance novelist who gets her morning snack from the doughnut van on the seafront. Nor the pregnant woman in the dental surgery. Nor the chemo patient in the supermarket for whom the cashier feels ever so sorry. They're all just alibis. In fact, the only thing that’s real about Joanne is that nobody can know who she really is. But someone has got too close. It looks like her alibis have begun to run out…. MY REVIEW Gripping, hypnotic, and very strange (in a good way!), THE ALIBI GIRL by CJ Skuse was unlike anything that I had ever read before and is sure to be a hit with all suspense and thriller fans. Joanne Haynes has many secrets. To every person that she meets, she is someone different with a different name and a different life. She is a pathological liar who has created new personas depending on the day and the mood that she is in - from the happily married mum of five to the bestselling author. Joanne is a liar. But there is a reason for this because Joanne cannot be who she truly is because it is dangerous. Joanne has to stay hidden in order to survive and along the way, making up these other lives have helped her to stay somewhat sane. But somebody has found her and will do whatever it takes to make sure Joanne disappears for good this time. Haunting and sad at times, THE ALIBI GIRL has a way of making you connect with Joanne even though she has done and said some disturbing things. Moving from past to present where we get to see how Joanne came into existence, my heart broke for the little girl who just wanted love and stability with her family, and I desperately wanted her to find a way out of the darkness and to be happy again like she used to be. There is never a dull moment in this book and while there are a few confusing moments, it wasn't long before things became clearer and the drama became even more heightened. THE ALIBI GIRL by CJ Skuse is not a fast-paced, action-packed story but yet it manages to have the same impact on the reader and when I finished reading this book, I had to take a moment to let it all sink in. It is an engrossing story and I highly recommend it. AUTHOR BIO C.J. SKUSE is the author of the Young Adult novels PRETTY BAD THINGS, ROCKOHOLIC and DEAD ROMANTIC (Chicken House) and MONSTER and THE DEVIANTS (Mira Ink). She has recently written the adult crime novels SWEETPEA and its sequel for HQ/HarperCollins. C.J. was born in 1980 in Weston-super-Mare, England and has First Class degrees in Creative Writing and Writing for Children and, aside from writing novels, lectures in Writing for Young People at Bath Spa University. C.J. loves Masterchef, Gummy Bears and graveyards. She hates hard-boiled eggs, going to the dentist and coughing. The movies Titanic, My Best Friend's Wedding and Ruby Sparks were all probably based on her ideas - she just didn't get to write them down in time. Before she dies, she would like to go to Japan, try clay-pigeon shooting and have Tom Hardy present her with the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay. ABOUT THIS BOOK One juror changed the verdict. What if she was wrong? 'Ten years ago we made a decision together...' Fifteen-year-old Jessica Silver, heiress to a billion-dollar fortune, vanishes on her way home from school. Her teacher, Bobby Nock, is the prime suspect. It's an open and shut case for the prosecution, and a quick conviction seems all but guaranteed. Until Maya Seale, a young woman on the jury, persuades the rest of the jurors to vote not guilty: a controversial decision that will change all of their lives forever. Ten years later, one of the jurors is found dead, and Maya is the prime suspect. The real killer could be any of the other ten jurors. Is Maya being forced to pay the price for her decision all those years ago? MY REVIEW A legal thriller that will keep you guessing from the very beginning, I enjoyed THE HOLDOUT by Graham Moore which raises many questions about the legal system and racial prejudice that is built into that system. When fifteen-year-old Jessica Silver, a wealthy white heiress, disappears into thin air, it isn't long before the police have arrested and charged her teacher, Bobby Nock, a young, black man, even though no body has been discovered. According to the authorities they have caught their killer and they expect the trial to be a quick and easy 'guilty' all round. But when Maya Seale, a woman on the jury, questions many parts of the case and actually manages to convince the other jurors of Nock's innocence, a 'not guilty' is brought back to the courtroom. Fast-forward ten years and the jurors are gathering together to reconnect and to question whether or not they made the right decision all those years ago. But when a dead body is discovered, everyone seems to be pointing the finger at Maya. Somebody is out to get her and is determined to make her pay for her choices in the past. I have always enjoyed legal thrillers and this one was no different. Maya is a clever and intelligent main character and as the narrative switches from past to present, I was able to get a good handle on her as a person. There are two stories happening simultaneously - the disappearance of Jessica over ten years ago and who was guilty, and the current situation where there is a dead body and Maya is the main suspect. The problem of racial discrimination in the justice system is portrayed well throughout and makes you stop and think about the reality of what that means to so many people. With plenty of tension and drama, THE HOLDOUT by Graham Moore is sure to please all legal thriller fans and I will definitely read more from this author. AUTHOR BIO Graham Moore is the New York Times bestselling author of The Last Days of Night and The Sherlockian, and the Academy Award-winning screenwriter of The Imitation Game, which also won a Writers Guild of America Award for best adapted screenplay and was nominated for a BAFTA and a Golden Globe. Moore was born in Chicago, received a BA in religious history from Columbia University in 2003, and now lives in Los Angeles. ABOUT THIS BOOK London, 1937. With a new king in place, tensions are rising in London and across Europe. Shaken by the Great Depression and with talk of another war coming, the Buckingham Hotel is trying to regain some stability. Upstairs, Vivienne Edgerton is desperate to do something worthwhile with her time and her stepfather's money, rather than spending it on frivolity and debauchery - but will this land her in even more trouble? And downstairs, chambermaid Nancy Nettleton is finally starting to feel more settled at the Buckingham, and hopes her brother will soon call London home, too. But she misses the man she loves, demonstration dancer Raymond de Guise, who is noticeably absent from the Grand Ballroom dance floor. The staff and guests of the Buckingham soon discover that in a hotel full of secrets, there's always someone listening . . . MY REVIEW Glamorous, enchanting, and beautifully detailed, MOONLIGHT OVER MAYFAIR by Anton Du Beke is sure to delight historical fiction fans around the globe. As the political landscape is changing, the Buckingham Hotel stands firm in its resolve to remain unchanged. From the upper echelons of society to the downstairs chambermaids, their lives and the world of dance comes alive on every page and you will get caught up in all of the drama, secrets, betrayals, and emotions that echo through the corridors of this prestigious hotel. But as war seems ever more likely and mysteries run abound, someone is listening to their every word and who knows how it all will end. MOONLIGHT OVER MAYFAIR is the second book in this series (the first being One Enchanted Evening) and while I read this book as a standalone, I recommend that you read this series in order as it will make the characters and setting more meaningful - and why have one book when you can have two! Historical fiction has always been dividing for me where I have either loved it completely or was bitterly disappointed in it, never finding a middle ground and this book is no different - I loved it! The time period bursts to life on every page and I thoroughly enjoyed the different characters with their contrasting lives and problems. And then, of course, there is the dancing which is beautifully described - but I would expect nothing less from Anton Du Beke. MOONLIGHT OVER MAYFAIR by Anton Du Beke is a wonderfully drawn story about life in the late 1930s, with characters that felt very real, and I look forward to reading more from this author. AUTHOR BIO Anton Du Beke - the King of Ballroom, ‘Strictly Come Dancing’ royalty, and household name - is truly making his mark as one of this generation’s all-round entertainers. Hot on the heels of his debut album 'From The Top', Anton now realises his boyhood ambition and will be publishing his first novel, 'One Enchanted Evening', later this year. The consummate storyteller, adept at captivating audiences will now captivate readers as he whisks them away to worlds of dance, intrigue, high society and scandal... bringing the golden age of dance to life, page by page. As Strictly's longest running professional dancer, achieving a remarkable decade in dance on tour with his professional partner Erin Boag, and as a much sought-after personality and presenter, Anton is the perfect author to lead the reader to the dancefloor as never before. ABOUT THIS BOOK Can a fake relationship help her win back the one that got away? When Alice ‘Murph’ Murphy’s beloved mother died, she promised to keep the family bakery in Graceville, Georgia afloat—even if it meant letting her high-school sweetheart and best friend, Nash Harris, go. For years, Murph has been biding her time, waiting for Nash to come home. So when he strolls into Piece O’ Cake, Murph’s heart skips a beat--until he hands her an invitation to his wedding… There are painful secrets in both their pasts that only the two of them share, and Murph can’t bear the thought of Nash belonging to someone else. There’s only one thing Murph can think of to do: fake a relationship with local bar owner and old friend Harley Shaw to remind Nash of what he’s losing, and win him back for good. Nash is Murph’s best friend, a vivid reminder of her childhood and all the things she’s lost—but the more time Murph and Harley spend together, the more the lines between real and pretend begin to blur. Can Murph choose between the one that got away and the one who never left—and heal her aching heart? MY REVIEW I loved everything about WHERE WE BELONG by Shann McPherson and devoured this captivating romance in one evening without coming up for air. 'It's a truth universally acknowledged that inside every woman is an inner-psycho, just waiting to be unleashed' and Alice Murphy, known as Murph to her two best friends, is living up to this statement. Ever since she was nine it has been Nash, her, and Harley - always there for each other, protecting each other, and being each other's shoulder to lean on. But Alice knew instantly that it was her and Nash who would end up together, living happily ever after. And for a while their childhood friendship grew into love but when tragedy struck and Alice had to return home to take over her mother's bakery, Nash and her broke up, but Alice knew he would come back to her eventually. So when he walks into her shop one day, she knows this is it. But Nash is there to invite her to his wedding in a week and Alice is blindsided. How could he love someone else when she has always been there for him? As Alice goes into crazy mode (flag football and laxatives is all I'm going to say here!), she struggles to let go of her vision of what her future should be and even ropes Harley into pretending to be her boyfriend, even though that is simply laughable. Or is it? Because as Alice starts to see the changes in Nash and herself, she cannot help but notice how handsome and caring Harley has always been, and how he has always been there for her when she needed him. Could she have been looking in the wrong place for love all of this time? And as Nash starts to have doubts about what he is doing, will Alice fall for her first love again or go after the new feelings that are beginning to bud for one of her oldest friends? I instantly connected with Alice and while I wanted to shake some sense into her on so many occasions, I could relate to her and her dreams that had been taken away from her. Learning about the three main characters and their very special relationship gave me all of the feels, knowing that they were all that each other had through some very harsh times, and I could see why Alice clung on to her relationship with Nash. There are plenty of laughs and drama along the way, and a certain sizzling scene that will have you fanning yourself to take down your temperature, and as I watched Alice figure out her feelings and recognise other peoples, I desperately wanted her to make the right decision for everyone's sake. WHERE WE BELONG by Shann McPherson is an addictive romance and I cannot wait for more from this very talented author. AUTHOR BIO With big dreams of being a published author since she was an eleven-year-old girl writing Beverly Hills 90210 fan fiction before fan fiction was even a thing, Shann McPherson has been writing angsty, contemporary romances for most of her thirty-something years. Living in sunny Queensland, Australia, when she’s not writing Shann enjoys making memories with her husband and cheeky toddler son, drinking wine, and singing completely off-key to One Direction’s entire discography. ABOUT THIS BOOK Oslo, 2018. Former long-distance runner Sonja Nordstrøm never shows at the launch of her controversial autobiography, Always Number One. When celebrity blogger Emma Ramm visits Nordstrøm’s home later that day, she finds the door unlocked and signs of a struggle inside. A bib with the number ‘one’ has been pinned to the TV. Police officer Alexander Blix is appointed to head up the missing-persons investigation, but he still bears the emotional scars of a hostage situation nineteen years earlier, when he killed the father of a five-year-old girl. Traces of Nordstrøm soon show up at different locations, but the appearance of the clues appear to be carefully calculated … evidence of a bigger picture that he’s just not seeing… Blix and Ramm soon join forces, determined to find and stop a merciless killer with a flare for the dramatic, and thirst for attention. Trouble is, he’s just got his first taste of it… MY REVIEW What has just happened?! I'll tell you what, I have just read what is possibly the best crime thriller of 2020 and it is the beginning of a series - Hallelujah!!!! I'll be sitting over here, constantly refreshing orendabooks.co.uk waiting for book two, but first, here is what I thought of DEATH DESERVED: Celebrity athlete Sonja Nordstrøm has disappeared and it appears that she has been kidnapped. But she is not the only one. Someone has a clever agenda and they are playing a game of chase with the police, leaving clues and puzzles that are dramatic to say the least. Officer Alexander Blix is heading up the investigation and finds himself working alongside celebrity journalist, Emma Ramm, and they are determined to uncover the truth. But nobody understands how difficult this job can be like Blix, as the memories of a shooting over nineteen years ago travel everywhere with him. Can they catch a killer who is taunting them at every turn and appears to be enjoying the hunt? Part police procedural, part thriller, DEATH DESERVED by Thomas Enger & Jørn Lier Horst is 100% addictive and I flew through this story in one sitting. The characters are dynamic and engaging, and I felt I knew them very quickly which made me click with the story instantly. The chapters are short and snappy which I always love because the pace is never dull or boring, and I enjoyed watching the crime investigation unfold from both a police standpoint and the journalist standpoint. It is also a timely story in its portrayal of the celebrity world and media/Social Media obsession which can be so destructive at times. At one point while reading I noticed I was crouching over the book, tense, a little sweaty (sorry!) and my heart was thumping loudly - that is what DEATH DESERVED did to me. It made me react physically and emotionally, and to me, there is no better sign that an author, or in this case, authors, has made an impact than when a reader feels so connected. DEATH DESERVED by Thomas Enger & Jørn Lier Horst blew me away and I am eagerly/obsessively waiting for the next book in this series, so my advice is to buy it now!! AUTHOR BIO Thomas Enger is a former journalist. He made his debut with the crime novel Burned (Skinndød) in 2010, which became an international sensation before publication. Burned is the first in a series of five books about the journalist Henning Juul, which delves into the depths of Oslo’s underbelly, skewering the corridors of dirty politics and nailing the fast-moving world of 24-hour news. Rights to the series have been sold to 28 countries to date. In 2013 Enger published his first book for young adults, a dark fantasy thriller called The Evil Legacy, for which he won the U-prize (best book Young Adult). Killer Instinct, another Young Adult suspense novel, was published in Norway in 2017. Rights have been sold to Germany and Iceland. Enger also composes music, and he lives in Oslo. Jorn Lier Horst (born in Bamble, Telemark 1970) is a former Senior Investigating Officer in the Norwegian police force. He made his literary debut as a crime writer in 2004 and is now considered one of the foremost Nordic crime writers. His William Wisting series of crime novels has been extremely successful, having sold more than 1 million copies in Norway alone. The series has also been translated into thirty languages. Dregs, the sixth novel, was published in English by Sandstone Press in 2011. The next book, Closed for Winter, won Norway's Booksellers' Prize in 2012 and was shortlisted for the Riverton Prize (aka Golden Revolver). The Hunting Dogs won both the prestigious Golden Revolver for best Norwegian crime, and The Glass Key, which widened the scope to best crime fiction in all the Nordic countries, in 2013, as well as the Martin Beck Award from the Swedish Crime Writers' Academy in 2014. In 2016, The Caveman was honoured with The Petrona Award for Best Scandinavian Crime Novel of the Year in the UK. Book no 10 in the William Wisting series, Ordeal, was published in 2016, and a prequel, When it Grows Dark, will be issued in the UK in March, 2017. The William Wisting series is translated by Anne Bruce. ABOUT THIS BOOK Her husband says it's suicide. The police say it's murder. Liam Buckley was a married man with two teenage children when he moved out of the family home to start a new life with his lover. His wife Jennifer never forgave him, but now she needs him to come back: she's been diagnosed with a terminal illness, and the kids can't cope alone. One day after Liam moves home, Jennifer is found dead. Liam thinks it's suicide. But the police, led by DS Louise Kennedy, are convinced it's murder. Liam hires a retired detective to help prove his innocence, but it's no easy task. The children are distraught, and Jennifer's best friend, Sarah, is waging a campaign against Liam, determined to expose him for a liar and a cheat. As secrets surface from the complex web of Buckley family life, DS Kennedy must decide. Did Jennifer Buckley end her own life, or did Liam take it from her? The answer, when it comes, will shock them all... MY REVIEW An emotionally-compelling story, WHEN THE TIME COMES by Adele O'Neill will break your heart while making you question just how well you know those that you love? A few years ago, Liam left his wife, Jennifer, and two teenage children to move in with his girlfriend. Jennifer is diagnosed with Motor Neuron's Disease and it isn't long before she needs more help and needs Liam to step up more and be there for their children who are struggling with what is happening and what is going to happen in the future. So Liam moves back in to be the parent that Jennifer knows he will have to be in the future. Their son thinks it's a bad idea, Jennifer's best friend Sarah thinks it's a bad idea, and Liam's girlfriend and her family think it's a bad idea, but Jennifer can see no other way. But when Jennifer is discovered dead just after he moves in, everything takes a sinister turn because as the days pass it is looking more and more like Jennifer was murdered ... The characters are an unusual bunch in this book in that the only one I really felt anything for was Jennifer. My heart broke for this mother who was slipping away slowly each day and who knew she wouldn't be there to see her kids in their adult life. But I loved her strength and determination to be herself and fight for her rights with regards to assisted suicide which is still a contentious issue worldwide. The drama unfolds quickly and I wasn't sure what I thought - did Jennifer kill herself, did someone help her, or did someone murder her? but by the end, the answers are given but it wasn't exactly what I expected. There are many sensitive topics dealt with in this story which I thought the author handled well. WHEN THE TIME COMES by Adele O'Neill definitely falls into the genre of family drama but it is more than that and is sure to suit many fiction readers. AUTHOR BIO Adele is a writer from Co. Wicklow who lives with her husband Alan and her two teenage daughters. Influenced by writers across all genres she has a particular fondness for fiction that is relatable and realistic. Her debut novel is a character driven story of survival, dark family secrets and sibling loyalty, just like life. Adele has recently taken a seat on Wexford Literary Festival Committee and writes overlooking the Irish Sea, which she credits for the tumultuous dynamics in her character’s relationships and is currently weaving mayhem through the lives of her unsuspecting characters in her second novel, another dark tale that tests the lengths we go to protect the ones we love.
