ABOUT THIS BOOK Danger lurks everywhere for Central Oregon’s fire crews, but the biggest risk of all might be losing their hearts… Smokejumper Lincoln Reid is speechless to see Jacob Hartman among his squad’s new recruits. Linc had promised his late best friend he’d stay away from his little brother. And yet here Jacob is…and almost instantly, the same temptation Linc has always felt around him is causing way too many problems. Jacob gets everyone’s concerns, but he’s waited years for his shot at joining the elite smokejumping team, hoping to honor his brother’s memory. He’s ready to tackle any challenge Linc throws his way, and senses the chemistry between them—chemistry Linc insists on ignoring —is still alive and kicking. This time, Jacob’s determined to get what he wants. Close quarters and high stakes make it difficult for Linc to keep his resolve, nevermind do so while also making sure the rookie’s safe. But the closer they get, the more Linc’s plan to leave at the end of the season risks him breaking another promise: the one his heart wants to make to Jacob. MY REVIEW A Sizzling hot romance, BURN ZONE by Annabeth Albert is brimming with danger, action, and drama from start to finish. Lincoln Reid is a smokejumper who likes to keep his personal life private. Working alongside his best friend, Wyatt, doing what they always wanted to do was all he ever wanted, even if Wyatt's homophobic jokes and comments sometimes rubbed him up the wrong way. But Linc trusted his best friend who saved his life in so many ways so when Wyatt made Linc promise to never go after his younger brother Jacob, Linc agreed even though it was difficult for him because there was a connection with Jacob. But Wyatt was the only real family that Linc knew and he would never jeopardise that. Years later and Wyatt has passed away, and Linc finds himself training up Jacob to become a smokejumper, against his wishes. And it isn't long before that heat that was always between them flares to life again only this time there is even more strength behind the flames. But Linc is determined to leave at the end of the season and doesn't want to hurt Jacob or his family who may never forgive him. And then there is the promise he made to his best friend all those years ago. But Jacob is his own person and wants Linc more than words can say. He is willing to risk it all for a chance of happiness but can Linc let go of the past long enough to see that his future could be standing right in front of him? Or will Linc lose the most important person in his life for good? BURN ZONE by Annabeth Albert is the first book in this new series (Hotshots) and I look forward to reading the next instalment. The characters are likeable and relatable, and I loved getting to know the real Linc, behind the uptight and controlled facade that he tries to maintain all the time. Jacob is so sweet and I loved his determination to go after what he wants while never losing his own sense of self-worth. The smokejumper aspect of the story was exciting and intriguing and I enjoyed getting to know the other characters in this tight-knit community. And as for the romance element, this story is hot and I mean hot, so if sizzling sex scenes are your thing then look no further because this book has got it all. I love nothing more than a good love story and this is a great one. BURN ZONE by Annabeth Albert is a wonderful gay romance and is sure to make hearts beat faster for fiction fans everywhere. EXTRACT […] Linc ended up heading outside to the firepit like he hadn’t known all along where he was headed. Jacob was just working on lighting the thing as the evening temperatures dropped. “Need a hand?” he asked, squatting down next to him. “Yours? Always.” Jacob was far too flirty for his family being close by, but Linc liked the warmth in his tone too much to call him on it. “Here.” Linc handed him some kindling. Same as with the baby, they worked together silently, doing this task like they’d done it a thousand times before, when the reality was that the firepit had always been Wyatt’s domain, not Jacob’s. He liked working alongside Jacob, something that had both annoyed and buoyed him the last week, the way Jacob could often read his mind, anticipate what he was about to ask. And somehow once the fire was going, they ended up the only two out there in the big wooden chairs, alone but not really. They sat in a companionable silence for a while before Jacob shifted, leaning forward, voice a bare whisper. “You know, I’ve been thinking—” “Please don’t.” Linc wasn’t trying to be funny. The look on Jacob’s face, at once mischievous and earnest, so damn appealing, both turned him on and put him immediately on edge. “We need to get this—” Jacob gestured between them “—out of our systems. Once and for all.” “No.” It didn’t work like that, and it spoke to how damn young Jacob still was that he thought it did. “Hear me out. One night. Then we can concentrate on work after. Put it behind us. Take away the mystery maybe.” Linc snorted. It might be simply curiosity for Jacob, but it sure wasn’t for him. “It wouldn’t work.” “Maybe not, but I at least want to try. You don’t?” “I’m not an itch you scratch once.” “That sure of yourself, huh?” More like he was that sure of Jacob, but he said nothing, just stood. His no might be firm now, but he wasn’t made of iron either. Enough wheedling from Jacob and he might get twisted up enough to agree to that ridiculous plan. “Night. You have a nice time now with your family. And see you tomorrow. At work.” He chose his words carefully, reminding them both about the two big reasons they couldn’t do anything foolish. “Just think about it,” Jacob urged. “It’s cake time!” someone called from the house, saving Linc from answering. But he would. He’d think about it all right. He’d think about it tonight, alone in his bed. And probably tomorrow, in the shower. And he’d want it, just like he had for years now, every cell in his body aware of what he could have but wouldn’t allow himself. Lord, how he’d want it, especially now that Jacob had made this diabolical little offer. One night. And it didn’t help that a small piece of himself kept whispering, It might work. Never know. It could work. That part was wrong, of course, but it spoke to his want, wormed its way into his thoughts until he wasn’t sure how long his willpower could hold out. AUTHOR BIO

ABOUT THIS BOOK Three women. One summer reunion. Secrets will be revealed… Villa Dolce Vita, a rambling stone house on the Amalfi Coast, sits high above the Gulf of Naples amidst dappled lemon groves and the fragrant, tumbling bougainvillea. Kim, Colette and Annie all came to the villa in need of escape and in the process forged an unlikely friendship. Now, years later, Kim has transformed the crumbling house into a luxury retreat and has invited her friends back for the summer to celebrate. But as friendships are rekindled under the Italian sun, secrets buried in the past will come to light, and not everyone is happy that the three friends are reuniting… Each woman will have things to face up to if they are all to find true happiness and fully embrace the sweet life. MY REVIEW If ever there was a time to be transported to a beautiful place for a story brimming with heart and friendship, then this is it and THE SUMMER VILLA by Melissa Hill is the perfect book to read. Years ago, three young women, Kim, Colette, and Annie, found themselves and each other in a run-down stone house on the stunning Amalfi Coast on a trip that would change all of them forever. Now one of those women, Kim, has built up a successful company and has renovated the old house in Italy that meant so much to them all, and is ready to open it up for business and to her old friends from the past. Even though they do not keep in touch as much as they should, this will be a time for them all to come together and catch up with each other's lives and reconnect. But no matter how far you push it down, problems always seem to have a way of crashing to the surface at the worst possible time, and as they each try to deal with their issues, both past and present, will they discover that the truth can set you free? As always with Melissa Hill's novels, the setting is breathtaking and as we are all staying safe at home right now, closing my eyes and feeling like I was there on the Amalfi Coast was pure bliss. The characters are deftly created and quickly felt familiar, and I cared about what happened to each and every one of them. A wonderful story of friendship, choices, and being true to oneself, THE SUMMER VILLA by Melissa Hill is simply a joy to read with some surprises along the way that will keep you on your toes. ABOUT THIS BOOK At the school gates, there’s no such thing as yesterday’s news . . . When Liza’s little boy has an accident at the local health club, it’s all anyone can talk about. Was nobody watching him? Where was his mother? Who’s to blame? The rumours, the finger-pointing, the whispers – they’re everywhere. And Liza’s best friend, Sarah, desperately needs it to stop. Because Sarah was there when it happened. It was all her fault. And if she’s caught out on the lie, everything will fall apart. MY REVIEW A different type of story, THE FALLOUT by Rebecca Thornton is a drama that will slowly pull you in and keep you on edge to the very end. Sarah and Liza are best friends for five years and have always been there to support each other among all of the competitive mum crap that they don't want to be a part of. Except when it comes to one particular mother, Ella, Sarah cannot help but be envious of her picture-perfect lifestyle. So when Sarah gets the chance to speak to Ella while at the local prestigious family health club, she jumps at it, forgetting for that split second her promise to Liza and a tragic accident takes place. Sarah is devastated and wants to do whatever it takes to help Liza who was going through a tough time anyway with her controlling ex, and she will do whatever it takes to make it up to Liza who doesn't know the truth. But when the WhatsApp mommy crew starts spreading rumours and an investigation begins, will Sarah own up to her part in it all or will she make things a whole lot worse and realise that maybe she doesn't know Liza as well as she thought she did? The characters in THE FALLOUT are a bunch of relatively wealthy mums who all have their own secrets hiding behind closed doors but try to put on the perfect facade for the rest of the world to see. While I certainly felt for some of the characters along the way, none of them are particularly likeable but that didn't stop me from wanting to understand what everyone was hiding. The damage of social media and keyboard warriors is excellently portrayed throughout and there was never a lull in the drama at any point, with plenty of twists and surprises along the way. Overall, I enjoyed THE FALLOUT by Rebecca Thornton and look forward to more from this writer. AUTHOR BIO REBECCA THORNTON is a journalist and runs an online advertising business. ABOUT THIS BOOK You've got to be in the club to know the truth. Everyone's heard the rumours about elite gentlemen's clubs, where the champagne flows freely, the parties are the height of decadence . . . and the secrets are darker than you could possibly imagine. DS Maeve Kerrigan finds herself in an unfamiliar world of wealth, luxury and ruthless behaviour when she investigates the murder of a young journalist, Paige Hargreaves. Paige was working on a story about the Chiron Club, a private society for the richest and most privileged men in London. Then she disappeared. It's clear to Maeve that the members have many secrets. But Maeve is hiding secrets of her own – even from her partner DI Josh Derwent. Will she uncover the truth about Paige’s death? Or will time run out for Maeve first? MY REVIEW A compelling crime drama that kept me hooked from beginning to end, THE CUTTING PLACE by Jane Casey is the latest addition to the DS Maeve Kerrigan series. When the body parts of a young journalist are discovered, it is up to DS Kerrigan and her colleagues to try and piece together what happened and as they start to dig into her life one name continues to crop up - the Chiron Club. An elite club that is shrouded in secrecy and mystery, it is more than just an old-boys business club. There is something murky underneath the surface and it is up to Maeve and her partner Josh to find it. But they both have their own lives and problems to confront too, some of which could change their lives forever. But as the clock keeps on ticking and the body count appears to be rising, can Maeve uncover the truth or will someone silence her for good? While THE CUTTING PLACE is part of a series, I have to admit that this is my first time reading Jane Casey and while it can be read as a standalone, I loved Maeve and Josh so much that I have ordered the entire series because you can never have too many excellent books! And this author is excellent. The characters come alive in a way that I have never experienced before in crime fiction. They are gritty, raw, real, vulnerable, strong, and every other combination of emotion that makes them relatable and feel like family. The crime element is perfectly executed for the times we are living in, dealing with sensitive issues like rape, murder, domestic abuse, drugs, and power wielded by those with enough money to enforce silence. I love a good police procedural and this story has it all with some surprises along the way that are enough to keep you on guard. THE CUTTING PLACE by Jane Casey is crime fiction at its best and I have found a new favourite author. I'm now going to disappear and catch up with Maeve and Josh. Until next time! AUTHOR BIO Jane Casey has written ten crime novels for adults and three for teenagers. A former editor, she is married to a criminal barrister who ensures her writing is realistic and as accurate as possible. This authenticity has made her novels international bestsellers and critical successes. The Maeve Kerrigan series has been nominated for many awards: in 2015 Jane won the Mary Higgins Clark Award for The Stranger You Know and Irish Crime Novel of the Year for After the Fire. In 2019, Cruel Acts was chosen as Irish Crime Novel of the Year at the Irish Book Awards. It was a Sunday Times bestseller. Born in Dublin, Jane now lives in southwest London with her husband and two children. We have all found ourselves at home a lot now and this is the perfect time to read - whether it is reading to your child/children or finding new books to hold their attention, Books2Door has something for everyone (adults included!!). The Artemis Fowl Collection by Eoin Colfer immediately went on the list as it will soon be on our silver screens (fingers crossed) and my kids, like myself, always prefer to read the books before seeing the movie, and the boxset was great value so we thought why not buy the lot! So far, one of my kids is halfway through the set and loving it. I was feeling a little nostalgic and realised that my old copies of Enid Blyton were still in my childhood home so for starters I got The Magic Faraway Tree Collection and The Wishing Chair series. I am thoroughly enjoying stepping back in time and have already raced through the The Magic Faraway Tree collection and my youngest is now engrossed too so it's a win win. Useful for when your kids are at that stage where they want to know the ins and outs of what is happening as they develop, I remember selling a lot of What's Happening To Me? when I worked in my local bookstore so having a copy is always useful to have at hand - explaining everything in a clear and concise way you can pick and choose what you want to discuss or let older children read it by themselves and then chat later, whatever works for you. Books2Door is an excellent site offering a huge selection of genres with free shipping over £30. The books arrived in good time (allow for the current postal situation due to cover-19) and in perfect condition. I already have my list ready for my next order - Malory Towers here I come!! ABOUT THIS BOOK Tony, Hugh and Karen thought they’d seen the last of each other thirty years ago. Half a lifetime has passed and memories have been buried. But when they are asked to reunite - to lay ghosts to rest for the good of the future - they all have their own reasons to agree. As they take the ferry from Northern Ireland to Scotland the past is brought in to terrible focus - some things are impossible to leave behind. In The Last Crossing memory is unreliable, truth shifts and slips and the lingering legacy of the Troubles threatens the present once again. MY REVIEW A compelling story that moves seamlessly from past to present, THE LAST CROSSING by Brian McGilloway is the kind of story that gets under your skin without you being aware that it is happening. Thirty years ago, Hugh, Tony, and Karen stood side by side while a murder of retribution and revenge was carried out. Now they are being summoned to reunite after all this time to understand the past and lay their haunting ghosts to rest one last time. But can you ever truly forget about what has happened before? The actions that have shaped who you have become? The past element of this story is set during the Troubles where we witness how easy it was for battle lines to be drawn and sides to be taken when death and revenge were parcelled together. Sadness, grief, and fear are all combined and manipulated at many moments throughout this book and a sense of unease follows Tony through all areas of his life which left me feeling the tension of what was happening at all times too. And when some shocking truths come to light, I was equally as surprised as the characters themselves. I am a fan of dual timelines in stories when they are well-written and this one is superb in its fluency and there is an almost lyrical feel to this author's writing which adds something extra to the narrative. THE LAST CROSSING by Brian McGilloway is an emotional story with plenty of depth and that spark of something special that makes you feel connected to it all. A must-read for fiction fans. AUTHOR BIO Brian McGilloway is the New York Times Bestselling author of the critically acclaimed Inspector Benedict Devlin and DS Lucy Black series. He was born in Derry, Northern Ireland in 1974. After studying English at Queen's University, Belfast, he took up a teaching position in St Columb's College in Derry, where he was Head of English until 2013. He currently teaches in Holy Cross College, Strabane. His first novel, Borderlands, published by Macmillan New Writing, was shortlisted for the CWA New Blood Dagger 2007 and was hailed by The Times as "one of (2007's) most impressive debuts". In 2014, Brian won BBC NI's Tony Doyle Award for his screenplay Little Emperors, an award which saw him become Writer In Residence with BBC NI. Little Emperors is currently in development with Two Cities Television and BBC NI. Brian lives near the Irish borderlands with his wife, daughter and three sons. ABOUT THIS BOOK Meet Greta. She’s funny. She’s flawed. She’s hiding so much behind her big smile she’s forgotten who she is. But Greta is about to discover that the key to being happy is…being yourself. Greta Gale has played the part of the funny fat one her entire life, hiding her insecurities behind a big smile. But size doesn’t matter when you can laugh at yourself, right? Until Greta realises she’s the only one not laughing. And deep down, she’s not sure if she’ll ever laugh again. But Greta is about to discover that sometimes the best moments in life come when it’s all gone a bit pear-shaped… MY REVIEW Beautiful. Emotional. Relatable. These are just some of the words I would use to describe MY PEAR-SHAPED LIFE by Carmel Harrington but they are not enough to describe the lyrical way that this author weaves a story that will touch you to your core and make you feel like you never have before. Greta Gale has always been the fat, funny one - the funny member of her family calling herself Big G and the funny friend laughing at herself first before anyone else can. But beneath the laughing facade that she has helped to create, Greta is hurting and masking her pain with sleeping pills to help her zone out. When her family finds out, Greta is suddenly forced to confront everything in her life from her body image and self-confidence to the relationship with her parents and siblings, and along the way, Greta will really have to take a look at who she is at the core of herself and what she feels she deserves from life and all it could hold for her. Add in a trip of a lifetime, a beloved Uncle who is looking for love, a new friend, and an old friend who has something to tell her, and Greta may just be in for a life-changing adventure! This story is being released at the perfect time - strange you may think considering we are in the middle of a pandemic but this is how I see it. Never before have we realised how fragile and precious life truly is then now, and how futile ridiculous body expectations are and how worrying about other people's opinions simply shouldn't matter. We have woken up and realised that all that matters is family, friendships, and living long enough to see those you love cherish and blossom. And this captivating story captures the essence of this on every page. Greta is like the rest of us, flawed and consumed by what should be instead of what could be if she just let herself face everything head-on. She is also strong, loveable, and willing to put in the work to be herself and be as happy as she can be, with some help along the way from those who care about her. Oh, and the laughs along the way are a joy to behold! Hilarious! MY PEAR-SHAPED LIFE by Carmel Harrington is for anyone who has ever looked in the mirror and wished they saw something else, for anyone who wishes they had someone else's life, and for anyone who wants to read an excellent story with characters that will warm your heart long after you turn the final page. Greta is my favourite character from Carmel so far and I cannot wait for the next book from one of my all-time favourite authors. ABOUT THIS BOOK 1901. After the death of Queen Victoria, England heaves with the uncanny. Séances are held and the dead are called upon from darker realms. Helena Walton-Cisneros, known for her ability to find the lost and the displaced, is hired by the elusive Lady Matthews to solve a twenty-year-old mystery: the disappearance of her three stepdaughters who vanished without a trace on the Norfolk Fens. But the Fens are an age-old land, where folk tales and dark magic still linger. The locals speak of devilmen and catatonic children are found on the Broads. Here, Helena finds what she was sent for, as the Fenland always gives up its secrets, in the end... MY REVIEW An atmospheric historical tale that will give you the chills and make you want to don your detective hat and figure out the mystery. It's 1901 and England has become fascinated with the afterworld. Séances, ghostly spirits, and haunting nightmares are commonplace and everyone is searching for answers from the other side. Lady Matthews is determined to uncover the truth about a past tragedy and hires someone with special qualities for the job. While at the same time, a young man with his own tragic past cannot stop the feeling that he is being haunted by a place; a place he isn't sure he has ever visited before, yet knows well. I enjoyed THE GOLDEN KEY by Marian Womack but it definitely has an unusual flow to it which may not appeal to everyone. The characters are intriguing, never fully disclosing everything, and I enjoyed the tense and creepy tension that lingers on each page. Overall, an enjoyable read.
