ABOUT THIS BOOK My life is like one of those cheap snow globes my twins collected when they were younger. Shiny and pretty on the outside, blurred beyond recognition when shaken. Ever since her twin girls left home, Marisa has felt there’s something missing from her life. Her sprawling mansion is no longer filled with laughter and chaos, and she’s desperate to feel needed... and to be distracted from the secret she’s been hiding from her husband for all these years. Coffee with her best friends might be the only thing holding Marisa together. But Claire and Ellyhave their own secrets. Like why Claire hasn’t been to work in weeks, or why Elly won’t tell anyone who’s buying her flowers. When Jodi, a pregnant young girl, turns up at Marisa’s doorstep, Marisa is quick to come to her aid. She sees herself in Jodi and she knows how devoting yourself to looking after others can take up all your time in the most marvellous way. But Jodi’s arrival quickly pushes everyone’s lies to the surface. The father of her unborn child is someone the women know very well, and Marisa starts to wonder if her obsession with helping Jodi might come at a devastating price… MY REVIEW I picked up THE SCANDAL by Nicola Marsh at 8pm and it never left my hand until I read the last line - it is that good!!! Three very different women from different backgrounds have formed a friendship which they all rely on in different ways. Marisa is the epitome of the classy, sophisticated wealthy wife and mother, who volunteers all the time and has the perfect marriage - or does she? Claire loves her husband with all of her heart and enjoys her career as a cop. But infertility is breaking her heart and there is something that she is hiding from Dane who has never lied to her - or has he? And then there is Elly who is fierce, strong, and doesn't need anyone, or so the other ladies think. When a young, pregnant girl called Jodi arrives in their town, Marisa is first to offer her help and soon the other women follow suit but Jodi came here to find her unborn baby's dad, and it is someone very close to home to the ladies. As secrets, lies, betrayals, and horrifying truths come to the surface, it is safe to say that nobody's lives will ever be the same, and a danger is lurking that nobody could ever imagine because someone will kill to prevent a scandal. Be prepared to be suspicious of everyone as you read this book. The characters are all very contrasting and as I got to know each of these women in turn, it became very clear that you can never judge a book by its cover and there was a noticeable building up of tension that really got under my skin the more that I read. It is the kind of drama that gets under your skin and makes you angry at the injustice of it all and even at the end THE SCANDAL still managed to surprise me after all of the revelations! THE SCANDAL by Nicola Marsh is a gripping story that completely ensnared my attention and I highly recommend it!! I cannot wait to read more! ABOUT THE BOOK Ava's marriage has been a lie. For the past five years her husband Mark has been squandering their money on gambling and dodgy deals that have amounted to nothing. Mark has left Ava and their daughter, Sophia, to fend for themselves with a mountain of debt and not as much as an explanation as to where he's gone or when he'll be back. Just when Ava couldn't feel any lower, she receives the news that her grandfather has passed away. When Ava was a child, she used to spend her summers picking grapes on her grandfather's vineyard in Provence, before a rift between his daughters tore the family apart. They hadn't seen each other for years, which is why Ava is shocked to learn her grandfather has left money to her sister, Olivia, but his entire vineyard, Chateau Montrose, to her. Fresh coffee and croissants for breakfast, a glass of red with the handsome local waiter Jacques; Ava starts to feel quite at home. But it would be madness to walk away from her marriage, to take a chance on a place she fell for as a child - wouldn't it? EXTRACT Prologue Provence, Summer 1985 ‘Yuck, that’s bitter !’ Ava spat out the grape. Grandpapa laughed so loudly he was overwhelmed by a fit of coughing. ‘That’s because it’s not ripe, child !’ He patted his chest. Holding the red grape between his finger and thumb, he angled it to the sky. The bright sunshine streamed through it, turning the purple fruit a transparent shade of lavender. ‘We must catch them at the perfect moment. That is why we have to keep trying them. Tasting them. Checking them for their sweetness. And then when they are ripe, we pick them !’ he exclaimed with his typical French exuberance. Ava giggled. ‘But . . .’ he waggled his finger. ‘But there is only a tiny little window for this magic to happen.’ He shrugged. ‘Bouff, maybe two, maybe three days. And if we get it wrong . . .’ he paused. She stared at him, mouth open like a goldfish, hanging on his every word. ‘It is a disaster !’ He walked on, leaving her glued to the spot, first with shock and then curiosity as her mind began whizzing with questions. ‘The grapes are only ripe for a few days, Grandpapa ?’ she called after him. ‘Oui ! Come along now.’ The chalky dry soil crunched underneath his dusty shoes as he walked ahead. Every now and then, he would reach his hand out and touch the leaves with a soft caressing motion, as if he were stroking a beloved pet dog. Ava followed closely at his heels, lurching from stop to start whenever her grandfather decided to test another grape. Her freckles were developing by the second under the scorching afternoon sun. Suddenly he turned and looked at her intently. ‘I’ll let you into a little secret, my dear Ava.’ His voice lowered to a whisper. Her eyes widened, waiting for him to reveal another nugget of wisdom. ‘These grapes here,’ he motioned his hands across the rows of vines. ‘They are the heart of my vineyard. They are the oldest vines, and do you know what that means ?’ Ava shook her head. ‘It means, they are the strongest. Their roots have buried deep into the terroir so they can reach nutrients no other vines can get to.’ Kneeling down, and groaning slightly at the effort, her grandpapa wrapped his sinewy fingers around the trunk of the vine and placed his other weathered hand on the ground to provide some support. His rugged hands were covered in liver spots. ‘Très forte, very strong,’ he muttered, as he gave it a gentle shake. ‘They drink the minerals and carry them through here.’ He traced his forefinger up the trunk. ‘And along here.’ Ava watched with fascination as he drew a pathway to the fruits. He tugged another grape free, the vine shaking before springing back into place. ‘And when it is ripe, it will add a perfect sweetness to my rosé wine like no other grape can.’ He placed the little red fruit into her palm. His bones creaked as he steadied himself back onto his feet. She looked up at her grandpapa in awe, but his gaze was now fixed on the horizon. Eyes narrowed, he stared past the vines to her parents’ car, which was speeding along the driveway, trailing a cloud of dust. ‘Is everything okay, Grandpapa ?’ His warm smile had evaporated. His bushy grey eyebrows pinched together with a frown. ‘Grandpapa ?’ He muttered something in French. ‘Come on child, let’s get you back to the house.’ AUTHOR BIO Ruth Kelly is an award-nominated journalist, who has ghosted a string of Sunday Times bestsellers. ABOUT THIS BOOK It was nothing more than a one-night stand. Juliana Brody, a judge in the Superior Court of Massachusetts, is rumored to be in consideration for the federal circuit, maybe someday the highest court in the land. At a conference in a Chicago hotel, she meets a gentle, vulnerable man and in a moment of weakness has an unforgettable night with him. They part with an explicit understanding that this must never happen again. But back home in Boston, it becomes clear that this was no random encounter. The man from Chicago proves to have an integral role in a case she's presiding over--a sex-discrimination case that's received national attention. Juliana discovers that she's been entrapped, her night of infidelity captured on video. Strings are being pulled in high places, a terrifying unfolding conspiracy that will turn her life upside down. But soon it becomes clear that personal humiliation, even the possible destruction of her career, are the least of her concerns, as her own life and the lives of her family are put in mortal jeopardy. In the end, turning the tables on her adversaries will require her to be as ruthless as they are. MY REVIEW Gritty, engaging, and a must-read for legal thriller readers, JUDGMENT by Joseph Finder has plenty of drama and subterfuge to sink your teeth into. Superior Court judge, Juliana Brody, takes her family life with her husband and children, and her career very seriously and never strays from the honest and proper path. Until one night at a conference in Chicago, where she connects with a stranger and has a one-night-stand. Exhilarating in unexpected ways, Juliana is happy to put this episode behind her. After all, it is not like she will ever see him again. That is until he walks into her courtroom as she presides over a sexual discrimination case that is gaining traction. And it soon hits her that their encounter wasn't random at all. She was targeted and unless she gets this case thrown out, her indiscretion, along with her career and her marriage, will be destroyed. But Juliana isn't easily cowed and she wonders why this case is so important that it would warrant such pressure? But as she digs deeper and deeper into the truth, she will unlock deeper and darker secrets than she could ever imagine. Secrets that they will kill to remain hidden. I haven't read too many books in this genre so am by no means an expert, but I certainly enjoyed the layers and tension that jumps off the page in JUDGMENT. The characters are compelling and while Juliana is not exactly likeable, you cannot help but admire her determination to not give in and uncover the truth. JUDGMENT by Joseph Finder is not an action-packed thriller but a slower-paced, unfurling of lies, power, and murder all set against a legal background which makes it excellent to read. AUTHOR BIO Joseph Finder is the author of the forthcoming novel JUDGMENT and fourteen other novels, many of them New York Times bestsellers, published in 35 countries around the world. His book HIGH CRIMES was adapted into a movie starring Morgan Freeman and Ashley Judd; PARANOIA was made into the Harrison Ford/Gary Oldman film. He was born in Chicago, lived in the Philippines, Afghanistan, Washington State, and upstate New York. His novels have won numerous awards, including the Strand Critics award, the Barry Award, and the International Thriller Writers’ Thriller Award for best novel. His first novel, THE MOSCOW CLUB, was named by Publishers Weekly as one of the 10 best spy novels of all time. He lives with his wife in Boston and Cape Cod, where he roots for the Red Sox and mourns his Golden Retriever rescue dog, Mia. He’s currently trying to convince his wife to get another dog. ABOUT THIS BOOK FBI Agent Nell Flynn hasn't been home in ten years. Nell and her father, Homicide Detective Martin Flynn, have never had much of a relationship. And Suffolk County will always be awash in memories of her mother, Marisol, who was brutally murdered when Nell was just seven. When Martin Flynn dies in a motorcycle accident, Nell returns to the house she grew up in so that she can spread her father's ashes and close his estate. At the behest of her father's partner, Detective Lee Davis, Nell becomes involved in an investigation into the murders of two young women in Suffolk County. The further Nell digs, the more likely it seems to her that her father should be the prime suspect--and that his friends on the police force are covering his tracks. Plagued by doubts about her mother's murder--and her own role in exonerating her father in that case--Nell can't help but ask questions about who killed Ria Ruiz and Adriana Marques and why. But she may not like the answers she finds--not just about those she loves, but about herself MY REVIEW I loved Cristina Alger's first book, The Banker's Wife (see my review here booksofallkinds.weebly.com), so when GIRLS LIKE US popped through my letterbox, I couldn't wait to dive in and I was not disappointed. Nell Flynn is used to moving around and depending on only herself working as an FBI agent. Ever since she left home ten years ago she hasn't looked back and has just had the odd phone call here or there with her father, who had raised her alone after her mother was murdered. But now she is back in Suffolk County to spread her dad's ashes after he died in an accident, with the support of her dad's best friends and fellow detectives, and she isn't quite sure how she feels about it all. With trouble still brewing from her last case and an injury that needs to heal properly, Nell needs to rest and relax, both of which she struggles to do back here on the island. And when a mutilated body of a young woman is found nearby, echoing the murder case from the year before which Nell's dad had been working on when he died, she cannot help but be pulled into the investigation. But as Nell digs deeper, there are many things which just don't seem to add up, and corruption, prostitution, abuse, and more starts to slowly seep to the surface. But just who exactly can she trust? And was her father somehow involved? In a community that is split between wealth and privilege, and extreme poverty, can Nell take down those who you are using and abusing these girls before it is too late? Before more people get silenced? With her signature style and flair, Cristina Alger creates a murky world where, just like Nell, we have no idea who we can trust. A world where girls from one side of the tracks are bartered and abused, while the other side lives a blissful, blessed existence. A world where no one cares once the victim isn't one of their own. And then we get to know Nell, a determined, strong-willed FBI agent who will do whatever it takes, no matter how devastating the truth may be to her personally, to blow this case apart and expose the truth - every single dirty secret that is simmering beneath the surface. I loved the fact that this story was solely told from Nell's point of view as I felt like I really got to know her as the story progressed. The setting is superbly detailed and there is a constant creepy atmosphere that lingered on each page which added to the overall tension of the plot. GIRLS LIKE US by Cristina Alger is another excellent novel from this author who always manages to surprise me at the end, and I cannot wait for more! AUTHOR BIO Cristina Alger is a lifelong New Yorker. A graduate of Harvard College and NYU Law School, she worked as a financial analyst and a corporate attorney before becoming a writer. ABOUT THIS BOOK Can neighbours become more than good friends... After her husband left her, Ali and her daughter Grace enjoyed living in what became known as 'the Single Mums' Mansion'. However, with her best friends Amanda and Jacqui moving on, it's time for Ali and Grace to make their own way. Thankfully, a chance conversation leads to them moving into the infamous South London gated community known only as The Mews. In The Mews everyone lives in each other's pockets and curtain twitching is an Olympic sport. The neighbours are an eclectic bunch – from Nick the alleged spy, Carl the gorgeous but clearly troubled Idris Elba lookalike, to Debbie who is about to face the hardest fight of her life, and TV agent Samantha who is not as in control as she likes to pretend. Each day brings another drama, but along with the tears, real friendships grow. And her neighbours' problems might unlock the key to something Ali has yearned for all along... MY REVIEW THE SINGLE MUMS MOVE ON by Janet Hoggarth is a heartwarming and entertaining story of new beginnings and true friendship and I really enjoyed it. 'The Single Mums' Mansion' helped Ali and her daughter Grace find their feet when they needed it most but it is time to move on to new beginnings and when they get the opportunity to move into The Mews they jump at the chance. A community where everyone knows everything about each other, or think they do anyway, it isn't long before Ali is getting to know her new neighbours, some of whom are more friendly than others. But as drama unfolds, friendships will shine through the hard times, and Ali may just find happiness as she has never known before. Engaging characters, a great plot, and a style of writing that lures the reader into this story on every page, THE SINGLE MUMS MOVE ON by Janet Hoggarth is a wonderful story that is sure to please fiction fans everywhere. While this book is a sequel, it can easily be read as a standalone which is exactly what I have done. THE SINGLE MUMS MOVE ON by Janet Hoggarth is a moving and appealing story and I highly recommend it. AUTHOR BIO Janet Hoggarth has worked on a chicken farm, as a bookseller, children's book editor, and DJ with her best friend (under the name of Whitney and Britney). ABOUT THIS BOOK Miriam Jackson is a famous radio presenter. Married to a successful film director, she has created the perfect life for herself. Then her daughter goes missing. Miriam is desperate to find her before her husband finds out and her perfect life crumbles around her. So she calls the only person who can help: Private Investigator Madison Attallee, who has just solved the biggest case of her career. Can Madison find Miriam's daughter? And will Miriam share the truth about her past? MY REVIEW THE LIES WE TELL by Niki Mackay is a dark and twisted tale of abuse and control and it made my skin crawl to the very end. Miriam has a wonderful life married to Nick, a gentle, undemanding man who also happens to be a hot-shot film director. She has her career as a radio presenter and her beautiful daughter, Tabitha. But beneath the surface, Miriam knows that her life with Nick lacks something and when her first love unexpectedly appears in her life again, she cannot help but be charmed by him. And then Tabitha disappears and Miriam's life changes beyond recognition. Desperate to find her and not wanting to disappoint Nick yet again, Miriam hires P.I. Madison Attallee to find her baby. But as Madison starts to dig it soon becomes clear that this case goes much deeper than a missing teenager. Can Madison find Tabitha and uncover the truth before it is too late? And will Miriam ever get her daughter back? I'm not going to lie, this book was much more evil and harrowing than I expected but it gripped me and I was desperate for the vulnerable characters in this book to get justice, and could not put the book down until I knew the truth. Miriam is a strange character in that I didn't always like her and while I always felt sorry for what she was going through with her daughter, there were times when she was so selfish and self-absorbed that I wanted to shout at her. Madison is much more likeable and relatable and even though she has her own struggles to deal with, her honesty and willingness to keep trying are endearing. THE LIES WE TELL by Niki Mackay will make you uncomfortable, will make you stop and think, and will horrify you at times and for those reasons alone it is a book that must and should be read everywhere. A compelling and engaging novel from start to finish with moments that truly shocked me. AUTHOR BIO Niki is a writer and a bookworm. Niki studied Performing Arts at the BRIT School. It turned out she wasn’t very good at acting but quite liked writing scripts. Niki went on to take a BA (Hons) in English Literature and Drama and later won a full scholarship for an MA in Journalism. ABOUT THIS BOOK On the surface, Anna Witherall personifies everything the aspirational magazine she works for represents. Married to her university boyfriend David, she has a beautiful home and gorgeous three-year-old twin daughters, Stella and Rose. But beneath the veneer of success and happiness, Anna is hiding a dark secret, one that threatens to unravel everything she has worked so hard to create. As Anna finds herself drawn into the dark and highly controlled world of secret intelligence, she is forced to question her family’s safety, and her own. Only one thing is certain: in order to protect her children, she must leave them, forever. And someone is watching. Someone she thought she could trust. Someone who is determined to make them all pay. MY REVIEW Part domestic thriller, part spy thriller, THE MOST DIFFICULT THING by Charlotte Philby defies being put into a genre box and is truly fresh and different from beginning to end. When Anna moves to University she creates a brand new life for herself, leaving behind the trauma of her past. Best friends with David and Meg, it is Harry that captures her heart. But when he lures her into a murky world of espionage and lies, Anna will come to realise that she has stepped onto a path that will make it impossible for her to be happy. Married to David, with two beautiful little girls, Anna is making choices that will haunt her forever. But she knows that her little girls will be looked after by David's childhood friend and their nanny, Maria. But nothing is ever quite what it seems and as the web of deceit begins to close tighter around Anna and her family, will she have to leave them forever to keep them safe? Compelling, tense, and complex, THE MOST DIFFICULT THING by Charlotte Philby is the kind of go-to story that you can really sink your teeth into. The story is told through the two main female characters, Anna and Maria. They are both determined women, but Maria is more likeable than Anna and it is easier to understand her motives behind things at times. Anna is a strange character in that I didn't warm to her and felt she had gotten herself into this mess with her choices, but towards the end I wanted her to be safe and free, and that last sentence - oh my! THE MOST DIFFICULT THING by Charlotte Philby is the kind of book that sucks you in without you realising it, and before you know it you are turning the last page. I cannot wait to read the next book from this cracking new author. AUTHOR BIO Charlotte Philby worked for the Independent for eight years, as a columnist, editor and reporter, and was shortlisted for the Cudlipp Prize at the 2013 Press Awards for her investigative journalism. Founder of the online platform Motherland.net, she regularly contributes to the Guardian and iNews, as well as the BBC World Service, Channel 4 and Woman's Hour. ABOUT THIS BOOK Wedding bells are ringing and gossip is spiralling in Whispers Wood… Single mum Gloria Pavey has a bad habit of saying exactly the wrong thing at the wrong time. Determined to make a positive change she can’t say no when her best friend, Emma, asks her to take on the role of her wedding planner. The only problem? Gloria’s co-planner – best man Seth Knightley. Gloria is on a self-imposed man ban but pulling together the most beautiful wedding Whispers Wood has ever seen alongside gorgeous Seth is pushing her to her limits. As every interaction increases the tension between them Gloria finds herself wondering…could the happy ever after she never thought she’d have be in her future after all? MY REVIEW Returning to Whispers Wood was just as delightful as I had hoped it would be, making THE WEDDING PLANNER by Eve Devon the perfect summer read for you all. Gloria Pavey understands that she rubs people up the wrong way and says the wrong thing most of the time but she wants to change. She wants people to warm to her more and stop crossing the street to avoid her. She loves her daughter and wants to be better, for her as well as for herself. But romance and love are definitely not on her radar. In fact, it is the last thing in the world that Gloria wants to be involved with. But when her best friend, Emma, wants her to be her wedding planner, how can Gloria say no? And when she finds herself side-by-side with the groom's younger brother, Seth, how will Gloria manage to keep it all together? Add in some drama, plenty of community spirit, and characters that will make you smile, and THE WEDDING PLANNER by Eve Devon is a cracking good read. While this is the third book in the series, it can be read as a standalone as the author kindly includes a character background section at the beginning of this book - but why have one good book when you can have three? Go on, treat yourself! THE WEDDING PLANNER is the kind of story that makes you feel lighter and is the perfect book to relax with by the pool or in the garden in this delightful weather. AUTHOR BIO Eve Devon writes sexy heroes, sassy heroines & happy ever afters... Growing up in locations like Botswana and Venezuela gave Eve Devon a taste for adventure; her love for romances began when her mother shoved one into her hands in a desperate attempt to keep her quiet during TV coverage of the Wimbledon tennis finals! When Eve wasn't consuming books by the bucketload, she could be found pretending to be a damsel in distress or running around solving mysteries and writing down her adventures. As a teenager, Eve wrote countless episodes of TV detective dramas so the hero and heroine would end up together every week.
