ABOUT THIS BOOK

The Murdering Wives Club is a support group for women who wish to murder their husbands. Or so the rumour goes.

Returning home from World War II, Laurie Davenport is blind and traumatised. He is also convinced that his wife, Charlotte, is trying to kill him. With the help of his assistant, the enigmatic Norah Walsh, Laurie hunts for proof of these killer women.

Then convicted Irish murderer Eve Good claims to have belonged to a club of murdering wives called The Sinful Roses. She agrees to recount her harrowing crimes to Laurie and Norah.

Can Eve Good shed light on this obscure matter? Can a blind, amateur detective succeed in exposing this terrifying group of murdering women? And in his darkened world, whom can he trust?

MY REVIEW

Riveting characters, a fresh plot, and that all-important mystery that we just need to unravel, all combine to make THE MURDERING WIVES CLUB by Sharon Thompson her best book yet!

Laurie Davenport is struggling to come to terms with his injuries obtained in the war which is still battling on. Back home in his childhood haven, Davenport House, he finds some comfort but he is convinced that his wife, Charlotte,  is trying to kill him as she doesn't want to be saddled with a blind man for a husband. The only ray of light in his life is the conversations and friendship that he has developed with his new assistant, Norah Walsh. And when Norah brings to him a story about a club called The Sinful Roses - a group of women who want to kill their husbands - they both begin an investigation that will take them down paths that they never imagined.
Is Charlotte a part of this club? Is she really trying to kill him? And can Laurie trust their only source, a criminal known for lies and deception? Can he trust anyone?

From the very first page, this story had me hooked and it kept me hooked to the very end. I instantly liked Laurie and wanted him to find purpose in his new way of living, and Norah was almost hypnotic in the way that she instantly felt familiar and friendly. As always with Sharon Thompson's writing, history and setting came alive on the page, and a woman's always precarious and unequal position in the world was excellently portrayed. The mystery element of this book was exquisite with plenty of twists to keep it interesting at every point.

THE MURDERING WIVES CLUB by Sharon Thompson is historical crime fiction at its finest and I look forward to more from this talented Irish author.

ABOUT THIS BOOK

People like Emmy Jackson. They always have. Especially online, where she is Instagram sensation Mamabare, famous for always telling the unvarnished truth about modern parenthood.

But Emmy isn’t as honest as she’d like the fans to believe. She may think she has her followers fooled, but someone out there knows the truth and plans to make her pay. Because people like her have no idea what pain careless words can cause. Because people like her need to learn what it feels like to lose everything.

MY REVIEW

A dark and gripping tale of grief and obsession, PEOPLE LIKE HER by Ellery Lloyd is a hypnotic tale that will pull you in instantly and keep you entranced to the very end.

Emmy Jackson never thought that she would be the top mummy influencer on Instagram but that's what she is and she gives it her all. Her life revolves around follower counts, paid ads, PR events, and showing the 'reality' of life as a mum-of-two to her adoring fans who demand more every time. But the pictures on the grid only show what Emmy wants them to show and half the time it isn't reality. But it pays for their lifestyle which is even more important since Dan, her husband, has been writing his second novel for 8 years and doesn't seem to be getting anywhere fast. Sure, Emmy fakes some of her stories and adds the odd little white lie to her captions, but that's social media, isn't it? But when someone becomes obsessed with Emmy and her family, everything takes on a sinister tone. Because someone wants Emmy to pay the ultimate price for what she has done.

Like most people, I'm an Instagram fan and spend plenty of time scrolling through my feed so I was instantly interested in the plot of this story which works effortlessly. The dangers of social media are expertly portrayed on all sides - from the followers who compare themselves to their idols and hang on their every word, to those who love to seeth in anger in celebrity's DMs, to the idols themselves who lose themselves to their influencing lifestyle and the addictive type of work that is involved, and will do whatever it takes to stay on top. But it is the detailed characters in this story which make it come alive and as the drama slowly unfolded, I was on the edge of my seat throughout. Sensitive subjects such as losing a child and mental health issues are also highlighted in this story and handled carefully.

PEOPLE LIKE HER by Ellery Lloyd is a thriller for our times and I look forward to more from this dynamic writing duo.

ABOUT THIS BOOK

Separated by time. Brought together by fate.

Indulging her fascination for the Viking language and losing herself in an archaeological dig is just what Linnea Berger needs after her recent trauma. Uncovering an exquisite brooch, she blacks out reading the runic inscription, only to come to, surrounded by men in Viking costume, who seem to take re-enactment very seriously.

Lost and confused, Linnea finds herself in the power of Hrafn, a Viking warrior who claims her as his thrall and takes her on a treacherous journey across the seas to sell her for profit. Setting sail, she confronts the unthinkable: she has travelled back to the ninth century.

Linnea is determined to find a way back to her own time, but there's a connection forming with Hrafn. Can she resist the call of the runes and accept her destiny lies here...

MY REVIEW

A riveting and eye-opening historical novel, THE RUNES OF DESTINY by Christina Courtenay has everything you could possibly ask for in a great story - danger, adventure, romance, and friendship.

After an awful car accident, Linnea is struggling with getting back to everyday life and the nightmares do not seem to be going anywhere anytime soon. So when she gets the chance to work on an archaeological dig, she jumps at the opportunity. While she usually prefers the study of Vikings and their language, the fresh air, and change of pace is what she needs right now. But when Linnea discovers an ancient brooch and reads the inscription, she suddenly finds herself back in time surrounded by a horde of Viking men, with one of them, Hrafn, claiming her as his possession. What unfolds is a dangerous and exciting adventure as Linnea tries to figure out how to survive in a time where women were captured and sold as thralls to the highest bidder, whilst also finding a way to get back to her own time. But what is unexpected is the friendships that Linnea forms, the intense feelings that begin to bloom for Hrafn, and the strength that Linnea uncovers within herself. And if the opportunity to go home arises, can she walk away from everything she has come to care for?

THE RUNES OF DESTINY by Christina Courtenay completely blew me away and I devoured it in one sitting as I simply could not put it down. While it is the second book in this series, it can easily be read as a standalone story but why have one good book when you can have two?!

I loved learning about life back in Viking times and it is obvious from the detailed and engrossing descriptions of all aspects of Viking life, that the author is an expert on the subject. The characters came to life in a meaningful way from the very beginning of this story and I genuinely connected with Linnea and Hrafn and wanted them to find the happiness they deserve. There is plenty of danger, lies, betrayals, and treachery as the characters travel towards their fate, which kept me gripped and on the edge of my seat the whole way through.

THE RUNES OF DESTINY is a beautiful tale of inner strength, love, and finding where you belong, and I cannot wait for the next book in this series!

AUTHOR BIO

Christina Courtenay is an award-winning author of historical romance and time slip (dual time) stories. She started writing so that she could be a stay-at-home mum to her two daughters, but didn't get published until daughter number one left home aged twenty-one, so that didn't quite go to plan! Since then, however, she's made up for it by having eleven novels published and winning the RNA's Romantic Novel of the Year Award for Best Historical Romantic Novel twice with Highland Storms (2012) and The Gilded Fan (2014), both published by Choc Lit.

Christina is half Swedish and grew up in that country. She has also lived in Japan and Switzerland, but is now based in Herefordshire, close to the Welsh border. She's a keen amateur genealogist and loves history and archaeology (the armchair variety).

ABOUT THIS BOOK

Can love really conquer all?
When Charlie Quinn returns to Northern Ireland, having spent sixty years in Canada, the people he left behind are shocked to see him. They presumed he was dead.
But Charlie has come back for one reason, Ella, the love of his life and a notorious child murderer. She is back in the headlines and Charlie wants the truth to finally emerge.
As he looks back at his life, we learn that nothing is as it seems.

Is Ella really a killer?

Does Charlie know more than it appears?

And can two lost souls get to live happily ever after?

Life isn’t easy. But death is the most challenging thing of all…

MY REVIEW

A compelling and darkly emotional story of love, loss, heartache, and more, THE QUIET TRUTH by Sharon Thompson is a book that will linger in your mind long after you finish reading it.

Charlie Quinn has finally returned to his home and life in Northern Ireland after sixty long years away. But this isn't some childhood dream of seeing the green fields of his childhood one last time, but a determined effort to revisit a troubled past and set the truth free. Especially with Ella, the love of his life, notoriously known throughout the land as a child murderer. As Charlie begins to tell his story, a twisted web soon begins to unfurl and the harsh reality of how women were treated in Ireland in the not too distant past comes flaring to life. But can those who need peace find it?

As always with Sharon Thompson's books, there is a dark edge of truth and history blended amongst the pages which always has an effect on me as a reader - in this instance the horrific treatment of women and children in Ireland which still has such ramifications for so many people today. But it is Sharon's characters that truly draw me in each and every time, and those in THE QUIET TRUTH are no different. I was instantly intrigued by Charlie, the old man, from the very beginning, and wanted to know what had happened to him and those he loved. From there, I quickly became immersed in the twists and turns of Ella and Charlie's story, until I found myself on the last page before I was ready. And as always with Sharon's stories, I found myself caring deeply about these characters and their lives to the point where I felt that I was right there with them.

THE QUIET TRUTH by Sharon Thompson is an excellent historical novel and I look forward to more from one of my favourite authors.

ABOUT THIS BOOK

In 1893, there's no such thing as witches. There used to be, in the wild, dark days before the burnings began, but now witching is nothing but tidy charms and nursery rhymes. If the modern woman wants any measure of power, she must find it at the ballot box.

But when the three Eastwood sisters join the suffragists of New Salem, they begin to pursue the forgotten ways that might turn the women's movement into the witch's movement. Stalked by shadows and sickness, hunted by forces who will not suffer a witch to vote - and perhaps not even to live - the sisters must delve into the oldest magics, draw new alliances, and heal the bond between them if they want to survive.

There's no such thing as witches. But there will be.

ABOUT THIS BOOK

What if you could go back in time and fix the biggest mistake of your life?

Two years ago, Maisie’s best friend walked out of her life and she hasn’t heard from him since. When she wakes up in 1994, she naturally assumes she’s dreaming. But when she finds herself in the past again the next night and her actions in the dream alter her present-day life, she begins to wonder if she’s somehow hopping back in time.
And if she is time-travelling, can she save her friendship with Jonas?

When Maisie is forced to relive Christmases of the past, will she face up to her mistakes, or make them all over again?

MY REVIEW

A warm and inviting story about friendship and the mistakes we make in life, THE 12 CHRISTMASES OF YOU & ME by Jennifer Joyce is an enjoyable read from start to finish.

When Maisie finds herself dreaming about the past, when her best friend Jonas was still in her life, she doesn't think too much about it. But when the decisions she makes in the dreams begin to change her current life, she starts to wonder what is going on! Could she be travelling back in time in her sleep? And is there a chance that she could fix the problems of the past and fix the relationships that were broken years ago with those that she loves?

I'm always sceptical of stories that have a time-travel element but I have to say that Jennifer Joyce gets the tone perfectly right and it really worked for me. Maisie is a likeable character and I enjoyed seeing the flashbacks of her life, the mistakes she had made, and how her friendship with Jonas had gone so wrong. With some festive magic thrown in for good measure, the setting and atmosphere of this story were lovely and there was never a dull moment.  A lovely story about friendship, life, and facing the past, I highly recommend THE 12 CHRISTMASES OF YOU & ME by Jennifer Joyce to all fiction fans. It's a great story to escape into for a few hours.

ABOUT THIS BOOK

Can Kerra's Cornish hometown offer the fresh start she needs?

When Kerra left the quiet Cornish town of Penvennan Cove for the bright lights of London she didn't look back. But after the death of her mother, she's decided it's time to face her past and return to the place she called home. Her father needs her, and perhaps she needs him more than she's willing to admit?

Tackling town gossip, home renovations and a flame from her past, it's not quite smooth sailing for Kerra. Ross is the bad boy she was meant to forget, not a man who still sets her heart aflutter. As he helps bring her dream home to life, they begin to break down the barriers that have been holding them back and in the process learn things about themselves they never thought possible.

MY REVIEW

A warm and enjoyable story from start to finish, COMING HOME TO PENVENNAN COVE by Linn B. Halton is a gentle balm to all of the craziness that is happening at the moment.

When Kerra's mother dies, she soon finds herself leaving the hustle and bustle of the big city to return to her childhood home in Cornwall to look after her father who needs her, even though he thinks he doesn't. It might take Kerra a little while to adjust to small-town living again but she wants to make it work and first up is some renovations for their cottage. But Kerra soon learns that some things never change, like nosy gossips always having an opinion on everything and everyone. And Kerra is soon finding it harder to push down old feelings for her building contractor,  Ross, her first crush from all those years ago. As relationships develop, friendships are formed, and trust begins to grow, will this move prove to be the best decision Kerra ever made? Or will she find herself yearning to return to city life where things were less complicated?

A gently paced romance that will leave you feeling warm inside, COMING HOME TO PENVENNAN COVE is sure to put a smile on your face. Kerra and Ross are great characters and I thoroughly enjoyed getting to know them. This story has a little something for everyone but most of all it has real heart, which I have come to expect with Linn B. Halton, and I am already looking forward to more from one of my favourite authors in this genre. A truly lovely story!

AUTHOR BIO

From interior designer to author, when Linn B. Halton's not writing, or spending time with the family, she's either upcycling furniture or working in the garden. ABOUT THIS BOOK

Harry Probert-Lloyd has inherited the estate of Glanteifi and appointed his assistant John as under-steward. But his true vocation, to be coroner, is under threat. Against his natural instincts, Harry must campaign if he is to be voted as coroner permanently by the local people and politicking is not his strength.

On the hustings, Harry and John are called to examine the body of Nicholas Rowland, a radical and pioneering schoolteacher whose death may not be the accident it first appeared. What was Rowland’s real relationship with his eccentric patron, Miss Gwatkyn? And why does Harry’s rival for the post of coroner deny knowing him? Harry’s determination to uncover the truth threatens to undermine both his campaign and his future.

MY REVIEW

An excellent plot with plenty of intrigue and twists to keep you hooked, THOSE WHO KNOW by Alis Hawkins is everything I wanted in a thriller and then some more for good measure.

Harry is in the untenable position of having to fight for his position as a permanent coroner which is his true calling. Politics is not his forte and he is struggling. And when the death of schoolteacher, Nicholas Rowland, is discovered, the local people are in shock. But when it becomes obvious that Nicholas was the victim of murder rather than an accident, Harry and his assistant John must figure out the truth even if it means Harry's dream could slip out of his hands.

Compelling and intelligent like the previous two books in this series, THOSE WHO KNOW blends fascinating characters, local politics, and murder effortlessly and it left me wanting more. While Harry tries to deal with the many difficulties in his life, he doesn't let them steer him off course as he pieces the truth together with the help of John, and I loved watching them work together.

THOSE WHO KNOW by Alis Hawkins is a beautifully written story of deception and death, and I highly recommend this book and this series to fiction fans everywhere.

AUTHOR BIO

Alis Hawkins grew up on a dairy farm in Cardiganshire. After attending the local village primary school and Cardigan County Secondary school, she left West Wales to read English at Oxford. Subsequently, she has has done various things with her life, including becoming a speech and language therapist, bringing up two sons, selling burgers, working with homeless people, and helping families to understand their autistic children. And writing. Always. Nonfiction (autism related), plays (commissioned by heritage projects) and, of course, novels. Alis's first novel, Testament, was published in 2008 by Macmillan and was translated into several languages. (It has recently been acquired for reissue, along with her medieval trilogy of psychological thrillers by Sapere Books). Her current historical crime series featuring blind investigator Harry Probert-Lloyd and his chippy assistant, John Davies, is set in Cardiganshire in the period immediately after the Rebecca Riots. As a side-effect of setting her series there, instead of making research trips to sunny climes like more foresighted writers, she just drives up the M4 to see her family. Now living with her partner on the wrong side of the Welsh/English border (though she sneaks back over to work for the National Autistic Society in Monmouthshire) Alis speaks Welsh, collects rucksacks and can't resist an interesting fact
