ABOUT THIS BOOK IT ONLY TAKES A MOMENT TO UNRAVEL A PERFECT LIFE . . . When Grace’s fiancé vanishes without a trace the night after proposing, her life is turned upside down. But has Nick walked out on her, or is he in danger? As Grace desperately searches for answers, it soon becomes clear that Nick wasn’t the uncomplicated man she thought she knew. And when she uncovers a hidden tragedy from his childhood, she realises an awful truth: that you can run from your past – but your secrets will always catch up with you . . . MY REVIEW Gripping from the very first page, THE NIGHT YOU LEFT by Emma Curtis is a psychological thriller that will enthral your mind while making your skin chill, and is definitely up there as one of my top reads in this genre this year. When Nick proposes out of the blue one afternoon, Grace is over the moon. Her life with Nick and her daughter is everything she ever hoped for and everything she thought she may never have. But when Nick goes for a walk that evening and doesn't arrive home, Grace is thrown into a panic. Did something awful happen to him? Could he have left her? Is he with another woman? And as Grace sets out to uncover the truth, she quickly realises that there is so much about Nick's past that she never knew about and it seems that his past and present have collided. But Grace knows the real Nick and she knows that he would never willingly walk away from their wonderful life together. One thing is for certain, she will not stop until she knows the truth no matter how hard, or dangerous, that may be. Instantly thrown into the story, I enjoyed the alternate chapters moving from the present situation where Nick is missing, to flashbacks of Nick's teenage years which has shaped him greatly. The characters are excellently portrayed and I found myself warming to Grace immediately even though it is obvious that she has her own hidden secrets too. Obsession, revenge, tragedy, and twisted memories are all the order of the day in this book and there is honestly never a dull moment from start to finish. THE NIGHT YOU LEFT by Emma Curtis puts the psychological into psychological thriller and I highly recommend this corker of a story to all fans of this genre. I look forward to more from this author. AUTHOR BIO Emma Curtis was born in Brighton and now lives in London with her husband. After raising two children and working various jobs, her fascination with the darker side of domestic life inspired her to write her acclaimed psychological suspense thrillers One Little Mistake, When I Find You and The Night You Left. MY REVIEW A wonderful collection of eclectic and fascinating mysteries with all the magic and mayhem of Holmes and Watson, THE SIGN OF SEVEN is a must-read for even the most critical of Sherlock Holmes fans. When I picked up this book I hoped for some good short stories where I could lose myself in the mystery for a while but what I got was so much more. While these stories are not full-length novels, they feel like they are - the settings, character development, and mischief involved were all excellently depicted and I never felt like the plot was rushed to make it shorter than your usual novel. I enjoyed all seven of these stories but I have to say that The Adventure of the Heroic Tobacconist by Derrick Belanger was one of my favourites as it contained all of the elements needed to make it an excellent mystery. SHERLOCK HOLMES: THE SIGN OF SEVEN is the perfect collection for historical mystery fans and Holmes fans alike and I highly recommend it as it is definitely a book that I will re-read again and again. ABOUT THIS BOOK “You want to know what I’ve learnt after living in Lone Creek all my life? I know the snow bleeds here …” Former police officer Dean Matheson has been playing it safe since the case that cost him almost everything. But working as a PI doesn’t quite cut it, that is until a British woman walks into his office with a job that Dean can’t resist. The woman’s daughter, Hannah Walker, and her friend Jodie have gone missing whilst working at a ski resort in Colorado. It’s clear there’s something sinister about the girls’ disappearance, but then why are the local police department being so unhelpful? So begins Dean’s journey to Lone Creek on the trail of the missing girls – and he’ll soon find out that in Lone Creek, everyone has something to hide … MY REVIEW WHERE THE SNOW BLEEDS by Wendy Dranfield will make your jaw drop, have you double-checking your doors, and have you looking over your shoulder when you go outside because it is that good! Dean Matheson is struggling with mundane cases as a P.I. but after what happened in his last case as a police officer, he knows that he isn't ready to go back. But when a woman asks him to look into her missing daughter's case at a ski resort in Colorado, Dean is determined to uncover the truth, because something just doesn't feel right. Meanwhile, Eva Valdez, a cop, who is struggling with her grief, heads up to the snow resort to take a look at the missing girls' case herself, knowing that the Detective in charge hasn't done his job properly but the last thing she needs is a P.I. messing up her case. But they soon realise that working together may just benefit them both as the evil that seems to breed in this place starts to crawl to the surface, and the truth is more horrifying and cruel than they could possibly imagine ... Harrowing, terrifying, and shocking to the core, WHERE THE SNOW BLEEDS by Wendy Dranfield is the perfect blend of crime fiction and psychological thriller while also having main characters that I really warmed to and wanted to see succeed. While this is the second book in this detective series (Who Cares If They Die is the first), it can easily be read as a standalone but I highly recommend you get both books as they are both amazing. If you are looking for a read that will have the hairs on the back of your neck standing tall, then look no further than WHERE THE SNOW BLEEDS by Wendy Dranfield. I cannot wait for more from these characters! AUTHOR BIO Wendy is a former Coroner's Assistant turned crime writer who lives in the UK with her husband. ABOUT THIS BOOK It is 1896, and Sherlock Holmes is presented with his strangest case yet. While attempting to prove the existence of telekinesis to a scientific society, a self-proclaimed psychic named Kellway disappeared from a locked room, in front of several witnesses. With a £10,000 reward at stake, Holmes is convinced Kellway is a charlatan - or he would be, if he had returned to claim his prize. But as Holmes and Watson investigate, the case only grows stranger and more difficult, as they have to contend with the interference of an 'occult detective'. Then one of the society's members is murdered, and Kellway himself reappears. But he is not the same man who vanished... MY REVIEW Step back in time for a twisted mystery that has London peers baffled - a scientific society offering £10,000 for proof of psychic ability and a man who claims to be what they are looking for who disappears before their eyes in a locked room. There is only one man who can unlock this puzzle, Sherlock Holmes (and his trusted best friend, Watson of course). But as is always the case in these matters, looks can often be deceiving and nothing is ever as magical or clear-cut as they appear. And when murder becomes the order of the day, Holmes and Watson may have bitten off more than they can chew ... Engaging, excellently-depicted, and with many twists and turns along the way, THE VANISHING MAN by Philip Purser-Hallard is like reading something new from the original man himself, and I was sucked into this mystery immediately and effortlessly. With Holmes' well-known wit and Watson's fastidiousness down to a tee, this story has got everything you could possibly wish for and more in a Sherlock Holmes novel. SHERLOCK HOLMES: THE VANISHING MAN is excellent from beginning to end and a must-read for fans of this genre! AUTHOR BIO Philip Purser-Hallard is the author of the trilogy of urban fantasy thrillers beginning with The Pendragon Protocol, and the editor of a series of anthologies about the City of the Saved. ABOUT THIS BOOK Archaeologist Sage Westfield has her first forensics case: investigating the murder of a teenage girl. Hidden by holly leaves, the girl’s body has been discovered on the grounds of a stately home, where another teenage girl went missing twenty years ago - but her body was never found. With mysterious links between the two disappearances, the police suspect the reclusive owner, Alistair Chorleigh, who was questioned twenty years ago but never charged. But when Sage investigates a nearby burial mound - and uncovers rumours of an ancient curse - she discovers the story of Edwin Masters, his friend Peter Chorleigh, and an excavation over a hundred years ago, that also ended in a mysterious disappearance. Still recovering from the traumatic events of her recent past, Sage will need both her modern forensics skills and her historical archaeological knowledge to unearth the devastating truth. MY REVIEW A SHROUD OF LEAVES by Rebecca Alexander is another exquisite tale of past and present colliding, where murder and betrayal are waiting to be sifted through by top archaeologist Sage Westfield who has her own complicated life to sift through too. Struggling with what happened to her in the past, Sage takes on her first forensic archaeologist case when the body of a young girl is found unusually buried in the grounds of a stately home. As she tries to help uncover the truth of this case, Sage is drawn into two other missing person cases that occurred in the same place, one spanning over a hundred years ago. But as she begins to unpick what happened to Edwin Masters all those years ago, could it be linked to the modern cases? And as Sage stumbles across the truth, will the horror of the past end up killing her too? While this is the second book in this series (review link for the first book here - www.booksofallkinds.weebly.com) it can easily be read as a standalone, although why have one great book when you can have two? Sage is a wonderful character who is relatable and likeable as she tries to deal with everything that is happening. Determined to bull through her PTSD on her own, she is pushing those who love her away while she throws everything she has into her work but when danger comes knocking and the truth of the murdered girl becomes known, Sage begins to recognise that she needs help and I was willing her to find the peace and help that she needed. I loved the historical element of the tale told through Edwin's journal even though it broke my heart, and as before, Rebecca Alexander weaves the past and present together to make one seamless crime thriller that surely needs to be made into a tv drama series?! I'll keep my fingers crossed. Twisted, engaging, and completely unputdownable, A SHROUD OF LEAVES by Rebecca Alexander is simply superb and I cannot wait for more from this fabulous author. AUTHOR BIO Having had a career in psychology, Rebecca Alexander decided to take time out to raise and home educate six children - and home educate herself with an MA in Creative Writing. The Secrets of Life and Death (2013) was a runner up in the 2011 novel writing competition with Mslexia and an agent and book deal for three books ensued. The Secrets of Blood and Bone (2014) and The Secrets of Time and Fate (2016) were published by Del Rey UK. With a historical strand exploring 16th century sorcery and a contemporary story about revenants, the books enjoyed a fantasy readership. Since then, A Baby's Bones will be published by Titan Books (May 1 2018) and is decidedly crime. A sequel comes out next April, and the books follow the work of an archaeologist trying to solve crimes in the past. And staying safe in the present, with the help of Felix Guichard from the Secrets series. Things are still going bump in the night. I also have an extract for you all to sink your teeth into, so happy reading!! ABOUT THIS BOOK Katie Manning was a beloved child star until her mid-teens when her manager attacked and permanently scarred her face, effectively ending her career and sending her on a path of all-too-familiar post-Hollywood self-destruction. Now twenty-seven, Katie wants a better answer to those clickbait “Where Are They Now?” articles that float around online. An answer she hopes to find when her brother’s too-good-to-be-true fiancée invites her to a wellness retreat upstate. Together with Katie’s two best friends—one struggling with crippling debt and family obligations, one running away from a failed job and relationship—Katie will try to find the inner peace promised at the tranquil retreat. But finding oneself just might drudge up more memories than Katie is prepared to deal with. Each woman has come to the retreat for different reasons. Each has her secrets to hide. And at the end of this weekend, only one will be left standing. MY REVIEW THE RETREAT by Sherri Smith is a dark and thrilling journey of whys and whats next that really took me by surprise. Katie Manning had the world at her feet as a child star but in the blink of an eye her life changed and she has been hiding from her trauma ever since. Now all grown up Katie drowns her sorrows while picking fault at her soon-to-be sister-in-law, Ellie, and hoping to find some sort of guidance for her future. So when her brother asks her to get to know Ellie better by visiting a retreat with her, Katie quickly agrees. Who knows, maybe this could be the answer to her prayers? Alongside Ellie, and her two best friends from college, Katie is ready for some laughter and enlightenment but the retreat may just bring the darkness from the past bubbling to the surface. As each person there confronts their history, the retreat soon becomes a lot more dangerous and as retribution becomes the order of the day, who will be the winner of the day? THE RETREAT by Sherri Smith is gripping from beginning to end, and while most of the characters aren't that likeable at first, I sympathised with their struggles and emotions as I got to know their history. There were plenty of 'OMG' moments that shocked me during this story, and as the truth begins to come to light, I couldn't put this book down. The writing is raw and packed with emotion and I highly recommend THE RETREAT by Sherri Smith for lovers of psychological thrillers. Read on for an extract! EXTRACT Katie It was like a dream. She couldn’t be awake. A knife. A bloodied knife. It was right in front of her, practically sharing her pillow like a rose left behind by a romantic one-night stand. But she was awake. She bolted upright. Instinctively, she picked up the knife. She saw streaks of blood on her hands and up and down her forearms. Katie leaped from the bed and rushed into the bathroom, the knife still dangling from her hand. She dropped it in the sink with a clatter and gaped at herself in the mirror. A red handprint blazed across the front of her tank top. Her heart started to flip. What the fuck? What the fuck? What the fuck? She’d cut herself. She had to have somehow cut herself. Her hand went to her cheek. There was more blood on her face. Same side as her scar. Two smeared thin strips of it, like half a claw mark. Maybe her scar had split open somehow. That had to be it; it had reopened and oozed while she was asleep. It was something she deeply feared; it was why she brought her own facecloths and her own pillow. As if everything that came in contact with her face held the capacity to slice it back open even though the Incident had been twelve years ago. Katie turned on the tap, cupped some water, and splashed it across her face, then used one of her washcloths from home to dry her cheek. Her scar was still a tightly sealed, shiny line. She pulled off her tank top and pajama bottoms and examined her entire body to see if she’d cut herself somewhere else, but there was nothing. No cuts. Not even little nicks that she might have slept through, no cracked scabs, no scabs at all. Her gut twisted. If the blood didn’t come from her, where did it come from? Ellie. Something happened to Ellie? She was too afraid to look, but she knew she had to. Katie inched toward the door she hadn’t closed all the way and bent slightly forward to peer out into the room at Ellie’s bed. It was unmade and empty. Her heart jumped up into her throat. She couldn’t get enough oxygen into her lungs. Fuck no, no, no. She stepped back into the bathroom, gripped the edge of the sink. Her head was racing with thoughts of calling Nate to explain his fiancée was missing and that, in unrelated news, she’d woken up with a bloodied knife. AUTHOR BIO Sherri Smith has previously written two historical fiction novels for Simon & Schuster UK. When not writing she spends time with her family, three rescue dogs and restores vintage furniture that would otherwise be destined for the dump. ABOUT THIS BOOK Will escaping for two weeks save her marriage? Or change her life? To the outside world, bestselling author Linda Costa has it all: a successful career, a wonderful marriage and two gorgeous children. But appearances can be deceiving ... The truth is Linda is not happy. She's feeling as though she's been taken for granted by her husband Rob, and her children. So, on the verge of a breakdown, she books herself a two-week holiday to Spain, determined to shake off the unsettling feeling she's been having about her marriage and her life. But as Linda relaxes by the pool, the idea of returning home to the chaos seems increasingly unappealing, especially when the handsome Kabir seems intent on showing her a good time ... Meanwhile, Linda's family soon discover that running a home isn't as easy as it looks. But will it be too late to show her just how much she means to them? Linda has some decisions to make. But will she choose the life she has? Or the one she thinks she wants? MY REVIEW Engaging, relatable, and witty, THE GETAWAY by Maria Duffy is the perfect summer read and is sure to keep you hooked from start to finish. Linda Costa is living the dream, Happily married with two lovely kids, she has landed a two-book deal and her dreams of being a successful writer are a sure thing. Until they aren't. Her marriage is slowly falling apart as Linda and Rob seem to be on different pages, feeling more like friends than lovers these days, and Linda cannot stop worrying about her kids - her daughter who is rude and selfish, and her son who seems to have withdrawn into himself lately. And then there is her writing. With the success of her first book behind her, this should be the easy part but it is anything but. With the deadline fast approaching, Linda is beginning to fear that she doesn't have it in her anymore and will have to hand back her advance but she can't talk to Rob who doesn't understand anything about her anymore. So when Linda gets the opportunity to visit her best friend in Spain, she jumps at the chance and leaves her family behind for two weeks which will give them all a little space. And maybe, just maybe, her family will begin to appreciate her. Sun, sand, and relaxation are exactly what she needs but when a handsome stranger wants to get to know her, maybe Linda will never want to go home ... There is so much to love in this book - the setting, the drama, the misunderstandings along the way - but it is the warmth and genuineness of the characters that make this story shine, and I had a soft spot for Linda's mum in particular. THE GETAWAY by Maria Duffy is everything you want in a good story and is perfect for reading by the pool, the beach, or the back garden, and I highly recommend it. AUTHOR BIO I grew up in the heart of Dublin with my parents and older brother. Being a professional eavesdropper from an early age, I always loved to write about the things I heard and would exaggerate them into proper stories! I spent my childhood devouring books and vowing some day I'd write one myself. But life had other things in mind and after spending 15 years working in a bank, I subsequently left to be at home with my four children. Having lost a lot of confidence in my own ability, it seemed my dream of writing a book was moving further and further away from me. When my youngest started school four years ago and I finally had some 'me' time, I decided to pursue that dream. After having a few short stories published, I eventually got myself an agent and very quickly had a two book deal. My first book, Any Dream Will Do, was published in November 2011 and my latest one, The Terrace, is out now, August 2012. I adore writing and feel like the luckiest person in the world to wake up every morning and live my dream. ABOUT THIS BOOK Not all doctors are heroes . . . Renowned surgeon Michael Trenchard locks his office door and prepares for a relaxing evening - Wagner on the sound system, a fine Scotch to hand. A knock at the door heralds the arrival of the person he most wants to see - the person who excites him more than anyone else. But what follows will turn his dreams into a living nightmare . . . for he will be discovered later that night in a locked-in coma, the victim of an auto-erotic asphyxiation. Can this really be an accident? It is left to Dr Kash Devan, Trenchard's young protégé, to uncover the truth. What he discovers is chilling: in his ruthless pursuit of wealth and success Trenchard has left a trail of wrecked lives behind him. Which of his victims hated him so much they wanted not only his life, but also his reputation ruined? MY REVIEW Engrossing, dramatic, and with plenty of twists and turns, CONTROL by Hugh Montgomery is an excellent medical drama that is perfect for all lovers of psychological thriller fiction. Dr. Kash Devan is excited for his future and working under the highly esteemed Michael Trenchard is only going to help him learn and become better. But looks can be deceiving and when Michael Trenchard is discovered almost dead in a very compromising position, it soon becomes obvious that he didn't know anything about this man and not everyone liked him. But something doesn't sit right with Kash and as he begins to dig deeper he starts to suspect that what happened to Michael may not have been self-inflicted. Somebody did this to Trenchard, somebody wanted to destroy him, and they will do whatever it takes to finish the job. Can Kash figure out the truth before someone else is hurt? And can he live with the truth about his mentor? I thoroughly enjoyed this medical thriller which wasn't brimming with confusing technical jargon but still made the hospital care setting come alive. Kash is a likeable character if a little naive at times, but I enjoyed watching him unravel the truth and there were moments which really surprised me. CONTROL by Hugh Montgomery is an edgy thriller that worked and I look forward to more from this author. AUTHOR BIO Hugh Montgomery is a professor and the director of the UCL Institute for Human Health and Performance at University College London. A distinguished physician, he is known for his pioneering genetic research. Outside the field of medicine, he was a founding member of the UK Climate and Health Council and is an endurance expert, who has run three ultra-marathons, scaled the world's sixth highest mountain, jumped naked from a plane at 14,000ft and holds the world record for underwater piano playing.
