ABOUT THIS BOOK Lesley has always fancied herself as an amateur sleuth, a sort of modern day Miss Marple without the support stockings. So when Al wants to hire her to investigate his elderly uncle's young fiancée, she jumps at the chance. It doesn't hurt that the job will involve posing as Al's girlfriend and joining his glitzy, star-studded family on holiday in Nice. Stella still can't quite believe she's engaged to legendary actor Sir Peter Bradshaw. She accepted what she thought was a deathbed proposal. Now she has a living, breathing fiancé and a wedding to plan. First, though, she has to get through a holiday in the South of France with Peter's extended family, who all seem convinced she's a gold-digger with her sights set on the family fortune. As Lesley bonds with Stella over shopping trips and bottles of rosé, she thinks she has it all figured out. After all, it's no great mystery why a young woman would marry a fabulously wealthy seventy-two-year-old with a heart condition, is it? It's an old story. And Al may be the nicest boyfriend she's ever had (even if he is fake), but Lesley believes in instant attraction and there's just no spark ... no matter how fit he looks in his swimming trunks. So there's no chance he's going to grow on her. But people have a way of surprising you, as she's about to discover ... MY REVIEW FOR LOVE OR MONEY by Clodagh Murphy is a wonderful story full of laughter, misunderstandings, and a few secrets thrown in for good measure. But it is the warmth and connection that I felt with the characters that make this story truly special. Lesley is happy enough being single, even if her parents are not, and her freelance job is perfectly fine albeit a little dull at times. When Lesley meets Al at a singles event, she knows instantly that there is no connection no matter how nice he is, but when he asks her to pose as his girlfriend for a while to unmask a potential gold-digger who is about to marry his wealthy, famous, old uncle, Lesley cannot refuse! Soon, she finds herself mixing with successful actors and holidaying in France, and even becoming friends with the supposed 'gold-digger' herself, Stella. But the more time Lesley spends with Stella the more she is sure that Stella is not after anyone's money but that Stella is certainly hiding something, but what is it? Lesley is also getting to know how lovely Al really is and when his ex-girlfriend shows up and appears to want Al back, Lesley cannot help but feel a flutter of jealousy. Throw in a mother obsessed with getting on YouTube, some heartbreaking secrets from the past, and plenty of sizzling tension, and this book has got it all!!! I adored every word of this book and from the moment I picked up FOR LOVE OR MONEY by Clodagh Murphy I couldn't put it down. Lesley is hilarious and felt like a best friend by the end of the first chapter and I loved watching her realise what a good guy Al is. Stella is an enigma for some of the book where I knew she wasn't using anyone but yet knew that she was hiding something from everyone. When the truth is revealed my heart broke for what had happened to her and I desperately wanted her to find the happiness and love that she deserved. FOR LOVE OR MONEY by Clodagh Murphy made me laugh, made my eyes tear up a little, and kept me hooked from start to finish, and is sure to please fiction fans everywhere. Buy this book and enjoy a beautiful story that has something for everyone! AUTHOR BIO Clodagh Murphy lives in Dublin, Ireland and writes funny, sexy romantic comedies. ABOUT THIS BOOK When a time travelling Jane Austen gets stuck in modern-day Bath it's up to avid Janeite Rose Wallace to save her… because she's the only one who knows that Jane exists! Rose Wallace’s world revolves around all things Austen, and with the annual festival in Bath – and the arrival of dishy archaeologist, Dr Aiden Trevellyan – just around the corner, all is well with the world… But then a mysterious woman who bears more than a passing resemblance to the great author moves in upstairs, and things take a disastrous turn. Rose’s new neighbour is Jane Austen, whose time travel adventure has been sabotaged by a mischievous dog, trapping her in the twenty-first century. Rose’s life is instantly changed – new home, new job, new friends – but she’s the only one who seems to have noticed! To right the world around her, she will have to do whatever it takes to help Jane get back home to write Rose’s beloved novels. Because a world without Mr Darcy? It's not worth living in! MY REVIEW Everything you could possibly want in a novel, THE PARTICULAR CHARM OF MISS JANE AUSTEN by Ada Bright & Cass Grafton will capture your heart on every page and leave you hanging on their every word. Rose Wallace adores everything that is Jane Austen and at her job, a letting agent in Bath, the city has come alive once again for the annual festival. But this year is even more special because her best friend whom she has never met in person, has arrived for a holiday and Rose has finally ended a relationship that was not good for her. But there is something magical in the air and Rose finds herself in a strange situation where it appears that Jane Austen herself has moved in above her! Add in her vibrant friend whom her boss seems to be smitten with, a sexy client who doesn't seem to know she exists, and some extra mayhem from some well-known characters and Rose's life just got a whole lot more exciting. But what happens when the past gets rewritten and everything you love just disappears into thin air? Well, you will have to read it to find out. The characters, the setting, and the entire atmosphere were captivating from start to finish and from the moment I picked this up, I didn't want this story to end. Rose is a well-rounded character who immediately feels like family and as a Jane Austen fan myself, this book had it all and the author left no stone unturned. THE PARTICULAR CHARM OF MISS JANE AUSTEN by Ada Bright & Cass Grafton has it all and I highly recommend it to all fiction fans, not just Austen fans because this story has something for everyone. AUTHOR BIO Cass Grafton A proud bookworm since childhood, Cass writes the sort of stories she loves to read – heart-warming, character driven and strong on location. Having moved around extensively and lived in three countries, she finds places inspiring and the setting of her novels often becomes as much a part of the story as her characters. She has an over-active imagination, is prone to crying with happiness as much as she is at sadness, but when it comes to her writing she leans heavily towards the upbeat and insists on a happy ever after. As one of her favourite authors, Jane Austen, once wrote, ‘let other pens dwell on guilt and misery’. Cass loves travelling, words, cats and wine, and enjoys them in any combination. She currently splits her time between Switzerland, where she lives with her husband, and England, where she lives with her characters. Ada Bright Ada has lived all her life in Southern California, which makes her intolerant to any weather above or below 72 degrees Fahrenheit. She grew up much more fond of reading than sports or socializing and still tends to ignore everyone she loves, all her responsibilities and basic life needs when she’s in the middle of a book. She is luckily married to a handsome and funny man who doesn’t mind that the laundry never gets put away and she has three amazing children. Ada spent over a decade as a photographer before dedicating herself to writing, though she still believes that life should be documented well and often. There is nothing she loves more than a good, subtle love story whether it be in real life, tv, movie, theatre or book form… well, except cake. She also really loves cake. ABOUT THIS BOOK In Cold River, sometimes forbidden love is the sweetest of them all… Perennial good girl Amanda Kittredge knows that her longtime crush on Brady Everett was never really supposed to go anywhere. But when Brady comes home during Amanda’s first attempt at independence, well, who better to teach her about rebellion than her older brother’s bad-boy best friend? Brady’s plans did not include being forced to work the family homestead for a year—and yet, here he is. And, to make matters worse, his best friend’s innocent little sister is making a menace of herself in the most grown-up, tempting ways. When Amanda begs Brady to teach her about men, he knows he should refuse. But could Brady’s greatest temptation be his salvation? MY REVIEW If you are looking for a romance that will make you sigh in all of the right places then look no further than THE LAST COWBOY by Caitlin Crews. Amanda Kittredge is determined to be more independent and the first step is moving out of the family home and finding herself a love life. While she has always had a crush on her brother's best friend, Brady, she knows that it is unlikely that he would ever look in her direction. Unless she gives him something to notice ... Brady Everett is equally determined to leave his hometown behind him as soon as possible but when he finds himself working at the family homestead, things begin to get even more complicated when his best friend's little sister starts showing her interest. It wouldn't be a problem except Brady cannot help but notice how much she has grown up and what an enticing, clever woman she has become. But this is just a pitstop for him and he will have to walk away soon, won't he? A lovely story of growing up, going after what you want, and taking chances, THE LAST COWBOY by Caitlin Crews is enjoyable from start to finish. The setting worked really well and I enjoyed getting to know Amanda and Brady, and their extended families along the way. If you enjoy cowboy romances then this is definitely one for you. AUTHOR BIO USA Today bestselling, RITA-nominated, and critically-acclaimed author Caitlin Crews has written over one hundred books, including Harlequin Presents, Harlequin Dare, and Cold River cowboys. She's won fans with the romance, women's fiction, chick lit, and work-for-hire young adult novels she's written as Megan Crane (including the futuristic, dystopian Viking romance Edge series). These days her focus is on contemporary romance in all its forms, from small town heat to international glamor, cowboys to bikers to military men and beyond. She's taught creative writing classes in places like UCLA Extension's prestigious Writers' Program, gives assorted workshops on the writing process, and attempts to make use of the MA and PhD in English Literature she received from the University of York in York, England. She currently lives in the Pacific Northwest with a husband who draws comics and animation storyboards, and their menagerie of ridiculous animals. ABOUT THIS BOOK For his entire life, Charley Sutherland has concealed a magical ability he can't quite control: he can bring characters from books into the real world. His older brother, Rob - a young lawyer with an utterly normal life - hopes that this strange family secret will disappear with disuse, and he will be discharged from his duty of protecting Charley and the real world from each other. But then, literary characters start causing trouble in their city, making threats about destroying the world, and for once, it isn't Charley's doing. There's someone else out there who shares his powers and it's up to Charley and a reluctant Rob to stop them - before anyone gets to The End. MY REVIEW I didn't know quite what to expect with THE UNLIKELY ESCAPE OF URIAH HEEP by H.G. Parry but I wasn't expecting such a sublime and evocative adventure into the world of classic literature and the importance and power of reading to be so beautifully depicted on each page. Charley Sutherland has always been unusual from the moment he died at birth and was miraculously brought back twenty minutes later, to attending Oxford University at the age of thirteen and being a Professor in Wellington at the age of twenty-six. But these wonderful achievements are trivial compared to his true depths of skill where he can read out characters from within the pages of a book and bring them into our world. Now, this has often gotten Charley into trouble but who wouldn't want to have a chat with Sherlock Holmes? After all, he is a great conversationalist and Charley has often felt lonely growing up, being nothing but a nuisance to his big brother, Rob. But when Charley inadvertently reads out Uriah Heep from David Copperfield, it sets off a chain of events which will change Charley's life, and many others, forever. With the discovery of a magical street where there are other fictional characters living, it isn't long before Charley, his new friends, and Rob begin to understand that there is someone else summoning characters into being for nefarious purposes and when they hear of a new world order being promised, Charley may just have to save the world with his power. That is if he can figure it out in time and believe in himself for once. I cannot imagine how much research would have gone into writing this fantastic story but I can only admire the author and applaud her at every turn. The descriptive settings, the detailed characters, the insights, the memories, and everything else in between combines to make THE UNLIKELY ESCAPE OF URIAH HEEP by H.G. Parry magnificent in every way. I have a soft spot for classics and Dickens in particular so this story was a dream for me, but if you have never picked up a classic before this is still a story that will work for you - with danger, fantasy, family drama, and secrets to name but a few things you have to look forward to. Many a time, I have found myself lost amongst the pages of a special book and this story made such a feeling shine. THE UNLIKELY ESCAPE OF URIAH HEEP by H.G. Parry is sure to be a hit and I look forward to more from this wonderful author. AUTHOR BIO H. G. Parry lives in a book-infested flat in Wellington, New Zealand, which she shares with her sister and two overactive rabbits. She holds a PhD in English literature from Victoria University of Wellington, and teaches English, film and media studies. Her short fiction has appeared in InterGalactic Medicine Show, Daily Science Fiction and small press anthologies. The Unlikely Escape of Uriah Heep is her debut novel. ABOUT THIS BOOK Welcome to the café that never sleeps. Day and night, Stella's Café opens its doors to the lonely and the lost, the morning people and the night owls. It's a place where everyone is always welcome, where life can wait at the door. Meet Hannah and Mona: best friends, waitresses, dreamers. They love working at Stella's - the different people they meet, the small kindnesses exchanged. But is it time to step outside and make their own way in life? Come inside and spend twenty-four hours at Stella's Café, where one day might just be enough to change your life . . . MY REVIEW Absorbing, moving, and relatable on so many levels, THE 24-HOUR CAFÉ by Libby Page is a fantastic book to read this January. The setting is a 24-hour café called Stella's in London and the characters are those that work there and those that frequent it at all hours of the day. Hannah and Mona are best friends, one a musician and the other a dancer, who works in the café to pay the bills while they reach for their big break. Only their big break doesn't seem to be happening very quickly and as the years pass and they enter their 30s they cannot help but question if they will ever make it. But they will always have each other, right? The café isn't just a place to grab food at any time of the day or night, for some it is a refuge - like the homeless student who is grieving his mother or the new mum who is struggling to cope with how she feels about her life or even one of the cooks who struggled to get work after prison and to which Stella's was his saviour. From young love to new love, from sadness to despair, this café sees it all and as Hannah and Mona struggle with some new issues in their friendship, could it be the place to bring them back into sync? THE 24-HOUR CAFÉ by Libby Page is a story about life - all different walks of life, all the wonderful and sad moments of life - with the beauty of friendship at its heart. Hannah and Mona are soulmates in that they truly understand and love each other for who they are but sometimes people lose sight of friendships when they need it most and moving onto different paths can be difficult, but this author has a talent for setting the tone and mood just right at every point. I laughed, I sniffled, and I enjoyed every moment of this novel and I cannot wait to read more from Libby Page. THE 24-HOUR CAFÉ is a must-read this January and beyond, and I highly recommend it to all fiction fans. AUTHOR BIO Libby Page wrote The Lido while working in marketing and moonlighting as a writer. The Lido has sold in over twenty territories around the world and film rights have been sold to Catalyst Global Media. ABOUT THIS BOOK London’s high society loves nothing more than a scandal. And when the personal secretary of the visiting Prince Sebastian of Alucia is found murdered, it’s all anyone can talk about, including Eliza Tricklebank. Her unapologetic gossip gazette has benefited from an anonymous tip off about the crime, forcing Sebastian to ask for her help in his quest to find his friend’s killer. With a trade deal on the line and mounting pressure to secure a noble bride, there’s nothing more dangerous than a prince socialising with a commoner. Sebastian finds Eliza’s contrary manner as frustrating as it is seductive, but they’ll have to work together if they’re going to catch the culprit. And soon, as temptation becomes harder to ignore, it’s the prince who’ll have to decide what comes first―his country or his heart. MY REVIEW A story that has made me fall in love with the historical romance genre all over again, THE PRINCESS PLAN by Julia London is everything you could wish for in a novel and more. After being disgraced in society ten years ago, Eliza Tricklebank is content with her life, helping her blind father with his work as a judge, and assisting with her widowed sister's gazette that is making waves in society. Eliza has learned the hard way that she must be true to herself and not try to fit into anyone's opinion of what a lady should be, and while her blunt honesty and lack of airs and graces may seem uncouth to some, Eliza no longer cares about other's opinions. But when she stumbles across the path of an Alucian prince, Sebastian, it will set off a chain of events which will find Eliza investigating the murder of Sebastian's closest friend, and taking every opportunity for happiness with Sebastian, who beneath his demanding exterior has a heart of gold that connects to her soul. Even though heartache is guaranteed when he must return home with an English bride from the upper nobility, Sebastian cannot resist Eliza who is unlike anyone he has ever met. And as they get closer to catching the killer, will they be able to walk away from each other forever? I devoured THE PRINCESS PLAN in one sitting because I simply could not put it down. The female characters are fresh and feisty, unwilling to dim their intelligence or their needs for anyone and I loved that, and their relationships with each other are joyful in every way. Sebastian is a little demanding at the beginning but the more I got to know him, the more I fell in love with him alongside Eliza, and I desperately wanted them to find a way to be together. There is danger, betrayal, sizzling chemistry, and a connection that is off the charts and the setting came alive on every page and I felt immersed in the time period at all times. THE PRINCESS PLAN by Julia London is simply perfect and I cannot wait for more from my new favourite author. AUTHOR BIO Julia London is a NYT, USA Today and Publisher's Weekly bestselling author of historical and contemporary romance. She is a six-time finalist for the RITA Award of excellence in romantic fiction, and the recipient of RT Bookclub's Best Historical Novel. ABOUT THIS BOOK One more little secret … one more little lie… When the body of a pregnant fifteen-year-old is discovered in a churchyard on Christmas morning, the community is shocked, but unsurprised. For Hope lived in The Home, the residence of three young girls, whose violent and disturbing pasts have seen them cloistered away… As a police investigation gets underway, the lives of Hope, Lara and Annie are examined, and the staff who work at the home are interviewed, leading to shocking and distressing revelations … and clear evidence that someone is seeking revenge. A gritty, dark and devastating psychological thriller, The Home is also an emotive drama and a piercing look at the underbelly of society, where children learn what they live … if they are allowed to live at all. MY REVIEW Sarah Stovell blew me away with her first book, Exquisite, and it obviously comes easy to her because this story did the same thing in a completely different way. THE HOME broke me in so many ways and is the type of book that will linger with you for a long time after you turn the last page. When the body of a pregnant fifteen-year-old girl is found in a quiet graveyard with another young girl distraught beside her, an investigation is launched to uncover the truth. But this may be no easy feat, as these two girls were two of the three residents of the local home that tried to care for girls with troubled and abusive pasts. As the staff and the police try to untangle the past to reveal the truth of the present, horrifying truths will come to light and a devastating reality will come to the surface. THE HOME by Sarah Stovell deftly weaves a story of trauma, innocence, and the gritty, terrifying reality that so many children live with in this world, so this is certainly not a light read. The story is told mainly from the points of view of the two girls themselves, Hope and Annie, with some input from Lara and the workers at the home. I expected this novel to be dark and to evoke emotion but I was unprepared for the onslaught of feelings that I experienced on each page - ranging from anger, revulsion, deep sadness and beyond. And while some readers may feel that this would be too much, THE HOME by Sarah Stovell shows the importance of not turning a blind eye and recognising what is happening. A compelling story that will break your heart, THE HOME by Sarah Stovell shows the author's immense talent in making a reader feel everything while also shining a light on important issues that need to be heard. AUTHOR BIO Sarah Stovell was born in 1977 and spent most of her life in the Home Counties before a season working in a remote North Yorkshire youth hostel made her realise she was a northerner at heart. She now lives in Northumberland with her partner and two children and is a lecturer in Creative Writing at Lincoln University. ABOUT THIS BOOK When her father dies just before her birthday, seventeen-year-old Aderyn inherits the role of Protector of Atratys, a dominion in a kingdom where nobles are able to transform at will into the bird that represents their family bloodline. Aderyn's ancestral bird is a swan. But she has not transformed for years, not since witnessing the death of her mother - ripped apart by hawks that have supposedly been extinct since the long-ago War of the Raptors. With the benevolent shelter of her mother and her father now lost, Aderyn is at the mercy of her brutal uncle, the King, and his royal court. Driven by revenge and love, she must venture into the malevolent heart of the Citadel in order to seek the truth about the attack that so nearly destroyed her, to fight for the only home she has ever known and for the land she has vowed to protect. MY REVIEW Enchanting and compelling, with exquisitely drawn characters, A THRONE OF SWANS by Katharine & Elizabeth Corr opens up a wonderful new world of magic and subterfuge that I cannot wait to return to. When Aderyn's father dies, she becomes the Protector of her dominion but she is in great danger. In a world where the nobility can easily transform into the bird that represents their house and everyone else is considered worthless, Aderyn can no longer fly - not since the day that she was attacked and her mother was murdered in front of her. There are those in the kingdom who would kill her if they knew the truth and as Aderyn travels to the Court, Aderyn must play a dangerous game to hide her secret while trying to uncover the truth about her mother's killers. But who can she truly trust? And as traps are set, will Aderyn unlock the secrets of the past and find her abilities again? It has been a while since I have read Fantasy/YA but this book made me fall in love with these genres all over again. I really enjoyed the characters, especially Aderyn, who is feisty and headstrong even if it does land her in trouble time and time again. The setting is excellently depicted and I could really imagine the kingdom and its people as I read each page. There is danger, friendship, secrets, and love, and when I turned the final page of A THRONE OF SWANS I was already itching to get my hands on the sequel. An addictive new series that is sure to please fantasy and YA readers alike, I highly recommend A THRONE OF SWANS by Katharine & Elizabeth Corr. AUTHOR BIO Katharine and Elizabeth Corr are sisters originally from Essex, now living in Surrey. When they both decided to write novels - on account of fictional people being much easier to deal with than real ones - it was obvious they should do it together. They can sometimes be found in one of their local coffee shops, arguing over which character to kill off next. Katharine and Elizabeth are authors of the spell-binding trilogy The Witch's Kiss.
