ABOUT THIS BOOK No one wants to be single at the holidays. Even Little Miss Grinch, Nikki, a successful and independent woman, must face her bachelorette status at the most horrible time of the year. December is her personal version of holly-jolly hell: a merry torture made of couples kissing at every corner, forced vacation days, and an inescapable family reunion. And when her baby sister announces she’s engaged—to Paul, the man Nikki is secretly in love with—and that he’s spending the holidays with them, Christmas starts looking bluer than ever. Nikki can’t possibly survive an entire week trapped home as the family’s spinster. But she has no time to meet men or to try the newest dating app, she’s too busy working as a video producer for an advertising agency. So what’s a girl to do? Nikki has the perfect solution: to hire a fake boyfriend. Luckily, her job gives her access to an endless catalog of gorgeous actors to choose from. But Nikki will soon discover that keeping business and pleasure from mixing isn’t so easy, and that she might not be immune to a little mistletoe magic. Especially not when she picked out the perfect man as her Christmas date... A fun, festive romantic comedy with lots of bad behavior and Christmas spirit. Like a creamy hot chocolate with marshmallows, you won’t want to put this deliciously hilarious novel down. Perfect for fans of Sophie Kinsella, Sally Thorne, and Jo Watson. First Comes Love is a series of interconnected romantic novels. However, each book in the series can be read as a standalone. MY REVIEW After a slightly hectic day, I decided to pick up A CHRISTMAS DATE by Camilla Isley and I am so glad I did because it really made me smile and relax. Nikki has a successful career that she works really hard at and close friends that she adores but with the Christmas holidays at home with her family looming, she is definitely not in the Christmas spirit. Nikki loves her family but it's hard having to listen about her perfect sister and her perfect fiancé - the guy who used to be her best friend and should have fallen in love with her. So during another phone call from her mother, Nikki makes up a boyfriend and soon finds herself hiring an actor for the holidays - a handsome, kind, considerate guy who could just be her perfect match if she could just let go of the past. With mishaps, sizzling chemistry, and home truths coming to light, A CHRISTMAS DATE by Camilla Isley has everything you need to make you feel all warm and fuzzy and put a smile on your face. Yes, the story did automatically remind me of the movie The Wedding Date, but it still brings fresh characters with their own issues, tension, and charisma, so don't let that put you off. The characters are really well-rounded, and I loved the close relationship that Nikki and Blair share. Diego is everything you want and more in this story and is sure to make your heart flutter. A CHRISTMAS DATE by Camilla Isley is fun, flirty, and filled with family messiness and I thoroughly enjoyed it from start to finish. Definitely a must for the Christmas season. AUTHOR BIO Camilla is an engineer turned writer after she quit her job to follow her husband on an adventure abroad. She’s a cat lover, coffee addict, and shoe hoarder. Besides writing, she loves reading—duh!—cooking, watching bad TV, and going to the movies—popcorn, please. She’s a bit of a foodie, nothing too serious. A keen traveler, Camilla knows mosquitoes play a role in the ecosystem, and she doesn’t want to starve all those frog princes out there, but she could really live without them. ABOUT THIS BOOK Katherine Ross, a struggling artist-turned-successful-businesswoman, has a life many would envy. At only thirty-one years old, Katherine runs one of the top luxury real-estate firms in Manhattan, and she lives in a fabulous loft with her dreamy husband. That is, of course, until her marriage comes to a screeching halt, forcing Katherine to face the truths she’s been burying deep within her heart. She hasn’t been happy for a long time. And her life, while glamorous, is not the life she ever wanted. Fighting through the fog of her confusion and pain, Katherine makes the daring, or possibly insane, choice to start over somewhere new. She leaves her business, her friends, and the city behind, while she ventures alone to the mountains in hopes of rediscovering her artistic roots in a place surrounded by beauty, peace, and quiet. In the quaint town of Bluewater Lake, Katherine finds just what she is looking for—abundant natural beauty, almost too much quiet, and a collection of colorful locals. As she adapts to the slow pace of small town life, Katherine befriends the remarkable inn proprietor, Mr. Trust, and his granddaughter Ginger, a former starlet and scandal-ridden Manhattan socialite. Katherine even begins to build an exciting, albeit rocky, relationship with the ruggedly handsome, yet mysterious and standoffish, Will. And with time, Katherine discovers her passion for painting once again. But life in Bluewater isn’t as simple as it may seem, and when her art career suddenly begins to take off in this unlikely setting, Katherine finds herself torn between two worlds. Does she pursue her lifelong dream and become the world-famous artist she always wanted to be? Or does she open her heart to the possibility of new dreams and a life she never imagined? MY REVIEW PAINTING BLUE WATER by Leigh Fossan, like its cover, is a work of pure art and I was immersed in this captivating tale from beginning to end. Katherine Ross has a lucrative and successful career, a wonderful home in Manhattan, and a charming husband that most people adore, but as is often the case, looks can be deceiving. When her husband walks out on her, Katherine is forced to really take a look at her life and the shell it had become - a very unhappy relationship, a job that she enjoyed but one that had never been her dream, and a workaholic lifestyle that was the opposite of what she ever wanted. Determined to take back control, Katherine decides to leave everything she knows and move to Bluewater Lake, a quaint and beautiful town where she has fond childhood memories with her family. As Katherine begins to settle down and meet the residents of this quirky and welcoming town, she begins to paint again which had always been so special to her, and she even starts to feel something special with a certain handsome, albeit aloof, man. But can the rugged and breathtaking scenery help Katherine figure out who she really is and what she wants in her future or will the lure of her old life call her back to the city? While I enjoyed the storyline, the drama, and the romance in PAINTING BLUE WATER by Leigh Fossan, it is the author's description of setting which really catapults this story into something more - the colours, the atmosphere, the picture that she paints is superb and really connects you to the story in a different way from other books. I adored all of the characters but I have to say there is a certain sprightly old age pensioner who thoroughly wormed his way into my heart and added that something extra to the community of Bluewater Lake. Dealing with plenty of complex emotions and feelings of self-worth and self-belief, PAINTING BLUE WATER by Leigh Fossan has many layers to it and I highly recommend it to all contemporary fiction fans. I look forward to reading what comes next from this new author. AUTHOR BIO Painting Blue Water is the debut novel for Leigh Fossan. A creative soul at heart, Leigh grew up with a paintbrush in her hand, and went on to study the arts in Florence, Italy. While abroad, Leigh was one of the few recipients of the Coluccio Salutati Award for Creative Writing. Today, Leigh is a professional artist and her paintings are collected around the world. She lives in Colorado with her artist husband, and their young daughter, who wants to be a scientist. ABOUT THIS BOOK Growing up on the wrong side of the tracks, Jolene Harper is forever indebted to the mother who encouraged her to fly—all the way to sunny LA and a world away from Honeymoon Harbor. Although Jolene vowed never to look back, returning home isn’t even a question when her mom faces a cancer scare. Which means running into Aiden Mannion all over town, the first boy she ever loved—and lost—and whom she can barely look in the eye. Aiden’s black-sheep reputation may have diminished when he joined the marines, but everything he’s endured since has left him haunted. Back in Honeymoon Harbor to heal, he’s talked into the interim role of police chief, and the irony isn’t lost on the locals, least of all Aiden. But seeing Jolene after all these years is the unexpected breath of fresh air he’s been missing. He’s never forgotten her through all his tours, but he’s not sure anymore that he’s the man she deserves. Despite the secret they left between them all those years ago, snow is starting to fall on their picturesque little town, making anything seem possible…maybe even a second chance at first love. MY REVIEW Magical, romantic, and completely heartwarming, SNOWFALL ON LIGHTHOUSE LANE by JoAnn Ross is a wonderful Christmas romance story that is sure to put you in the festive spirit. Jolene Harper has worked very hard to make it in an industry that is rife with creeps who try to take advantage. But when her apartment burns down and her mom gets a health scare, a holiday break in her hometown of Honeymoon Harbor is just exactly what she needs to plan the next step in her career and look after the woman who sacrificed everything for her. But Jolene didn't plan on bumping into Aiden Mannion, the bad boy turned good, who was her first love and brings back memories of her most humiliating moment from all those years ago. And while he still sets her pulse racing, Jolene is determined to keep her distance. Can first love become forever love? Or will the baggage from both of their pasts keep them apart? With a beautiful setting and a really engaging community, SNOWFALL ON LIGHTHOUSE LANE by JoAnn Ross has plenty to keep a reader hooked from beginning to end. I loved all of the characters but there was something extra special about Jolene and Aiden which came alive on the page, and I found myself cheering them on more and more as I got to know them. If you love a romance with depth then this is definitely the book for you and I look forward to more from this author. AUTHOR BIO New York Times bestselling author JoAnn Ross has written over a hundred novels for a bunch of publishers. Two of her titles have been excerpted in Cosmo and her books have also been published by the Doubleday, Rhapsody, Literary Guild, and Mystery Guild book clubs. A member of the Romance Writers of America's Honor Roll of best-selling authors, she's won several awards, including Romantic Times's Career Achievement Awards in both category and contemporary single title. Currently writing a new Honeymoon Harbor series for HQN set on the Washington peninsula, that will launch in April, 2018, JoAnn lives with her husband (her high school sweetheart, who proposed at the sea wall where her Shelter Bay books are set), in the Pacific Northwest. ABOUT THIS BOOK An heiress with a daring proposal. An earl who’s determined to resist her. And a love that just might be written in the stars… Recently jilted by his fiancée, David Gray, Earl of Ravenport is not in the market for a wife. Even if Gray didn’t have his hands full renovating his crumbling country house, it would take more than a bold marriage proposal from a headstrong young beauty to thaw his frozen heart. Gray is confident that spending a week at his ramshackle estate will change her mind about marriage, but every passionate moment he spends with her tempts him to change his… A talented artist, Miss Fiona Hartley desperately needs her dowry money to pay off a blackmailer set on ruining her sister. The handsome earl seems a sensible choice for a husband…if only she can convince him that romance will play no part. But marrying in name only may prove difficult for Fiona. Gray can’t help but be dazzled by her genuine warmth. Yet as their feelings deepen, Fiona’s deadline looms. Will her secrets destroy them, or is true love their final destiny? MY REVIEW I must admit that it has actually been quite a long time since I picked up a historical romance novel to read, having thrown myself into a lot of other genres since starting this blog, even to the point where I thought that maybe that genre just didn't interest me as much as it used to. But I liked the sound of FIRST EARL I SEE TONIGHT by Anna Bennett and decided to give it a whirl and I am so glad that I did, because what I found was a wonderful historical story with all of the attention to detail that I love and characters that just won my heart from the very beginning. Miss Fiona Hartley will do whatever it takes to protect those that she loves even if it means coming up with a plan to deal with a blackmailer who could destroy her family. Determined to pay this evil person off, she realises that she must marry to be safe and so decides to propose to Earl Ravenport who is one of the few men who has ever shown her kindness. Knowing he has been hurt recently, Fiona tries her best to prove to him that a marriage in name only would benefit them both, but as she begins to see beneath the surface of the brooding Earl, she just may fall for the kind and frightened man that lurks within ... With plenty of misunderstandings, secrets, and sultry assignations, FIRST EARL I SEE TONIGHT by Anna Bennett made me fall in love with historical romance all over again and I read this book in one sitting. I loved Fiona who was honest, upfront, intelligent and talented and Gray was a character that I just wanted to hug (that is when I wasn't shouting at him to open his heart!). The setting is superb and came alive in my mind as I read each page and this book really conveyed emotions very well. I felt every fear and sadness that they experienced and even found myself blushing at other parts of this story too😉 FIRST EARL I SEE TONIGHT by Anna Bennett is everything you could wish for in a fabulous historical romance and I want to thank this author for re-igniting my love for this genre which I have neglected for so long. I'm off to do some book shopping! AUTHOR BIO Anna Bennett started swiping romances from her mom’s bookshelf as a teenager and decided historicals (with their balls, dukes, and gowns) were the best. So, when she had the chance to spend a semester in London she packed her bags—and promptly fell in love with the city, its history, and its pubs. She dreamed of writing romance, but somehow ended up a software analyst instead. Fortunately, a few years and a few careers later, Anna found her way back to writing the stories she loves and won the Romance Writers of America’s Golden Heart® for Regency Historical Romance. She lives in Maryland with her husband and three children, who try valiantly not to roll their eyes whenever she quotes Jane Austen. Her weaknesses include reality TV, cute shoes, and coffee. Lots and lots of coffee. ABOUT THIS BOOK Some secrets never leave us alone... Gemma Peacock’s life was perfect – or at least, she thought it was. She had a home she loved, a job she enjoyed, and a husband she adored. The only cloud on the horizon was the continuing tension between Gemma and her mother-in-law, but that’s the same for everyone, right? After the death of her beloved husband, Ritchie, everything begins to fall apart. Indiana Manors’ life, on the other hand, is far from perfect – but she knows just what she has to do to fix it. Befriend Gemma Peacock – and destroy her. MY REVIEW Drawing me in from the very beginning, BEFRIENDED by Ruth O'Neill is a dark and disturbing story of lies that will really shock you. Gemma Peacock has just lost her husband and she is devastated. He was her best friend and lover and they had such a happy life together. She feels alone and lost, with the exception of her friend, as she never got along with her mother-in-law who disliked her from the beginning. But when Gemma comes into contact with a beautiful woman who knew her husband and is offering her friendship, she reaches out because that is the kind and caring person that Gemma is. But what if Indiana isn't who she says she is? What if Gemma's life could unimaginably get a lot worse? Handling sensitive topics such as mental health issues, BEFRIENDED by Ruth O'Neill weaves a complex and harrowing story of revenge and sadness which is never quite what it seems. The characters are intriguing rather than likeable, and there were times when I wanted to scream at Gemma to wake up and be more careful, but the plot and dialogue always kept me hooked to the story. With plenty of unexpected turns and twists, BEFRIENDED by Ruth O'Neill is definitely worth reading if you like a good psychological thriller with an edge. AUTHOR BIO Ruth O’Neill grew up in the ancient Roman city of Bath England, a beautiful peaceful city whose locations are often referred to in her first book ‘Sunshine & Tears’. Ruth has always enjoyed helping others and is very committed to her job as a Teaching Assistant where she supports young people with Special Educational Needs & Disabilities. Her second book `Befriended` is a contemporary thriller. ABOUT THIS BOOK It’s time to cosy up this winter… When Roxy proposes to her boyfriend Jackson in a moment of madness on live TV, she’s mortified when he rejects her. To escape the embarrassment, she takes a job working as baking assistant at the idyllic Log Fire Cabin. Roxy hopes the new job will take her mind off Jackson, because to her eternal annoyance, she hasn’t been able to stop thinking about him… But when Jackson turns up at the cabin unexpectedly, things begin to go wrong. With a sprinkle of snow, the help of new friends and more than a couple of mince pies, can Roxy heal her heart in time for Christmas? MY REVIEW SECOND CHANCES AT THE LOG FIRE CABIN by Catherine Ferguson is as deliciously magical as its wonderful cover and I never wanted it to end. Roxy has scars from her past that have really changed the way she perceives herself and relationships. So when she finds herself in a whirlwind romance with Jackson whom she is about to move in with, she takes a drunken leap of faith and proposes to him on national tv where he says ... no. Humiliated, unemployed, and now single again, this Christmas isn't looking too festive for Roxy but when a chance encounter leads to a job of sorts, Roxy finds herself at a stunning cabin where anything is possible. That is until Jackson shows up with his new girlfriend! But he isn't the only person at the lake and as Roxy forges new friendships, she may just begin to trust herself and a special someone with her heart. Compelling, engaging, and completely spellbinding, SECOND CHANCES AT THE LOG FIRE CABIN by Catherine Ferguson, is the epitome of a wonderful Christmas romance. There is plenty of drama, misunderstandings, confused emotions, and love to keep you hooked and the setting is like something from a fairytale Winterland that will make your heart melt. There are one or two characters that you will dislike instantly (you'll know them as soon as you start reading about them) but the rest of this gang are everything you want and need in a great story. SECOND CHANCES AT THE LOG FIRE CABIN by Catherine Ferguson is simply divine and I cannot wait to read more from this author. AUTHOR BIO Catherine Ferguson burst onto the writing scene at the age of nine, anonymously penning a weekly magazine for her five-year-old brother (mysteriously titled the ‘Willy’ comic). Catherine’s continuing love of writing saw her spend her twenties writing for various teenage magazines including Jackie and Blue Jeans before getting serious and becoming a sub-editor on the Dundee Courier & Advertiser. ABOUT THIS BOOK Evie Fuller is quite simply fed up. Single, unemployed and rapidly approaching her thirtieth birthday, she finds London life is weighing heavy. When a month of free language lessons offers an escape route, she heads to Madrid for sun-soaked adventures and a crash course in Spanish culture. Will a change of scene restore her zest for life? Follow Evie as she laughs, cries and adjusts to these foreign lands - a shy English girl blossoms under the Spanish sun and discovers the hardest thing about moving abroad is deciding when to come home. MY REVIEW When you pick up HAPPY AS A PARTRIDGE by Kate Boyle it will transport you to the beauty, culture, and often craziness that is Madrid where you will be swept along with Evie and her new friends. When everything seems to be falling apart for Evie she makes an impulsive decision to move to Madrid, one that shocks her family and close friends. But as she tries to settle down and find a job, Evie soon has plenty of wobbles over whether this was the right decision or not. As new friendships are formed, Evie finds herself a flat and a job teaching English which is definitely not easy, but she starts to understand the ebb and flow of the Spanish culture and the beauty of the place itself. But when she gets an offer that she cannot refuse back in the U.K., will Evie follow her heart or her head? Wonderfully descriptive, HAPPY AS A PARTRIDGE by Kate Boyle, will open your eyes to Madrid and all it has to offer and it is definitely on my bucket list of places to visit. The characters are quirky and engaging and I found myself willing Evie to grasp hold of her life and do what makes her happy. The story is well-paced with never a dull moment and I enjoyed it from start to finish. Definitely worth reading!! AUTHOR BIO Kate Boyle grew up in Essex and gained a first class degree from Bristol University before moving to London. A dogged desire to conquer her inability to roll her r’s subsequently led her to Madrid where she spent two and a half blissful years teaching English to a stream of Spaniards. She never grew accustomed to their regular comments on her pale skin. Now back in London Kate constantly dreams of the sunny skies of Madrid and persists with the irritating habit of dropping Spanish words into conversation at random. When she’s not revisiting her adopted homeland or trying to make a perfect Spanish tortilla, she can be found in a PR agency by day and writing her second novel by night. She regularly writes for an antiques magazine and has contributed to two architectural books. Happy as a Partridge is her first novel.
