ABOUT THE BOOK Juliette loves Nate. She will follow him anywhere. She's even become a flight attendant for his airline, so she can keep a closer eye on him. They are meant to be. The fact that Nate broke up with her six months ago means nothing. Because Juliette has a plan to win him back. She is the perfect girlfriend. And she'll make sure no one stops her from getting exactly what she wants. True love hurts, but Juliette knows it's worth all the pain... MY REVIEW THE PERFECT GIRLFRIEND by Karen Hamilton puts the psyche into psychological thriller and I could not read it fast enough!! Juliette loves Nate and believes with every fibre of her being that they are destined to be together, soulmates in every sense of the word. But Nate doesn't see it that way so it is up to Juliette to make him realise he is hers. And she will do whatever it takes to get what she wants, regardless of the consequences ... This excellent novel is told solely from the point of view of Juliette which means that the reader really gets to delve deeply into her personality and thought process - which is frankly terrifying!! Juliette is completely unhinged as she plots out every little detail to get Nate back and even though we know what she is planning there are still moments of surprise which ramp up the tension. Engrossing, spine-tingling, and downright compelling, THE PERFECT GIRLFRIEND by Karen Hamilton is a must-read for psychological fiction fans everywhere and I think it would make an absorbing tv drama. This is the first novel from this author and I cannot wait to read more! AUTHOR BIO Karen Hamilton spent her childhood in Angola, Zimbabwe, Belgium and Italy and worked as a flight attendant for many years. Karen is a recent graduate of the Faber Academy, and having now put down roots in Hampshire to raise her young family with her husband, she satisfies her wanderlust by exploring the world through her writing. ABOUT THE BOOK Three months after solving his last case, DI Tudor Manx leads a harrowing investigation to catch a killer terrorizing the Isle of Anglesey. After the body of the first victim, Sian Conway is found, the suspicion quickly falls on her boss, Kimble McLain, and her volatile ex-husband, Liam Fowler. The autopsy soon reveals Sian was eighteen weeks pregnant and when the coroner finds a religious text hidden in the victim’s liver, Manx suspects this could be the work of a serial killer. The case takes a shocking turn when footage of Sian’s murder is discovered. With a twisted killer on the loose and a rising body count, Manx's personal life hits rock bottom when an old colleague from his past hits him with a bombshell revelation Why does Kimble McLain have links to each of the victims? And what is the killer’s real motive? In a race against time to reveal the killer’s identity, Manx will face his toughest case yet. MY REVIEW DOLL FACE by Dylan H. Jones is a twisted, dark, and terrifying crime fiction novel that will have you double checking the locks on your doors and leaving the light on when you go to bed. DI Tudor Manx has only recently wrapped up his last case when he is called in to investigate a gruesome murder which strongly points towards a serial killer, and as the bodies begin to mount up, Manx will have to get one step ahead of this twisted killer if he is to have any chance of catching the culprit. But how is local millionaire Kimble McLain linked to all of this? And has the killer got a personal reason for choosing his victims? And as Manx tries to unravel the clues, a blast from the past will shake up everything. Gripping, and at times gruesome, DOLL FACE by Dylan H. Jones is an excellent story with a great cast of characters and a somewhat desolate but stunning setting. While this is the second book in this series it can easily be read as a standalone novel, which is what I have done. The story is told from two perspectives - DI Manx and his team and then from the unknown killer's perspective - with alternating chapters that are snappy and engaging. With plenty of twists and turns. this police procedural story really does tick all of the boxes, and I highly recommend DOLL FACE by Dylan H. Jones to crime fiction fans everywhere. ABOUT THE BOOK Cornwall, 1940. In the hushed hours of the night a woman is taken by the sea. Was it a tragic accident? Or should the residents of Penhallow have been more careful about whom they invited in? In the midst of war three women arrive seeking safety at Penhallow Hall. Each is looking to escape her past. But one of them is not there by choice. As the threat of invasion mounts and the nightly blackouts feel longer and longer, tensions between the close-knit residents rise until dark secrets start to surface. And no one can predict what their neighbour is capable of . . . In a house full of strangers, who do you trust? MY REVIEW THE STRANGER by Kate Riordan is a breathtaking story about family, first loves, and strength, and I fell into this spellbinding drama as it unfolded in front of my eyes. As the war rages on it can almost be forgotten about on the wild shores of Cornwall where life seems to trundle on regardless. But after years of solitude and silence, the rooms of Penhallow Hall are stirring with life again as it opens its doors to three very different women, with very different secrets. And what exactly ails the gentle and kind Eleanor, one of the ladies of the house, who cannot leave the property and watches the world pass her by? But as time passes, friendships old and new are forged, and the secrets from the past will come hurtling to the surface with unexpected consequences that will shake the foundations of those in Penhallow Hall for a very long time. THE STRANGER by Kate Riordan perfectly captures the many different types of strength women are capable of as each female character has suffered greatly in their lives and fought their way through their trauma in their own ways. The drama is rich, uncomfortable, and heartbreaking at times, but like the light in the darkness, there is always that glint of hope shining through each page. The setting is stunning and I was transported to the feral beauty of Cornwall every time I turned the page. THE STRANGER by Kate Riordan is a thought-provoking tale that will stay with you long after you finish reading it and I urge all historical fans to pick up a copy - you won't regret it! AUTHOR BIO Kate Riordan is a writer and journalist from England. Her first job was as an editorial assistant at the Guardian newspaper, followed by a stint as deputy editor for the lifestyle section of London bible, Time Out magazine. After becoming a freelancer, she left London behind and moved to the beautiful Cotswolds in order to write her first novel, 'Birdcage Walk'. Her second novel, a haunting dual narrative story set in the 1930s and 1890s will be published by Penguin in January 2015 as 'The Girl in the Photograph'. In February, HarperCollins will publish the same book as 'Fiercombe Manor' in the US and Canada. She is now at work on her third novel, another dual narrative story full of intrigue and secrets, but this time set in the 1870s and 1920s, and about the lives of two very different governesses. ABOUT THE BOOK As Montrealer Catherine Day sets foot in a remote fishing village and starts asking around about her birth mother, the body of a woman dredges up in a fisherman’s nets. Not just any woman, though: Marie Garant, an elusive, nomadic sailor and unbridled beauty who once tied many a man’s heart in knots. Detective Sergeant Joaquin Morales, newly drafted to the area from the suburbs of Montreal, barely has time to unpack his suitcase before he’s thrown into the deep end of the investigation. On Quebec’s outlying Gaspé Peninsula, the truth can be slippery, especially down on the fishermen’s wharves. Interviews drift into idle chit-chat, evidence floats off with the tide and the truth lingers in murky waters. It’s enough to make DS Morales reach straight for a large whisky. MY REVIEW WE WERE THE SALT OF THE SEA by Roxanne Bouchard is unlike any other crime fiction novel that I have ever read before. Like the sound of the sea lapping onto the shore, the beautiful narrative of this story while often harsh and raw, lulled me into this complicated story of identity and destiny. Catherine Day has no purpose in her life anymore so she decides to travel to the Gaspé Peninsula to meet the woman who gave birth to her all those years ago. Searching for something, Catherine tries to get the lay of the land or the sea in this case, and soon finds the gentle rhythm of this fishing community soothing in its own strange way. But when a body is found tangled up in the nets, it will force Catherine to take charge of her life, as the body is that of her mother, Marie Garant. As Catherine begins to piece together a picture of her mother, will it help her to figure out her own identity? And if her mother was such an expert sailor as proclaimed by those who knew her, how did she end up dead? When a newcomer, DS Joaquin Morales, finds himself in charge of this investigation, it appears to be a simple accidental drowning to him, and with his own marriage falling to pieces, the last thing he needs is a complicated murder case. But as the magic of the sea and the legendary Garant charm weave a spell around him, Morales will find himself eager to do whatever it takes to uncover the truth, and possibly keep Catherine in Gaspé for as long as possible ... Beautifully lyrical, I had never really understood the concept of literary crime fiction until I read WE WERE THE SALT OF THE SEA by Roxanne Bouchard. If you want a gritty, action-packed crime novel then this is probably not for you. This novel is harsh, raw, exposed, melodious, and almost poetic in its heartbreak and it captivated me from beginning to end. WE WERE THE SALT OF THE SEA by Roxanne Bouchard is a superb novel that will take your breath away as it is both simple and complex at the same time - a wonderful novel. AUTHOR BIO Ten years or so ago, Roxanne Bouchard decided it was time she found her sea legs. So she learned to sail, first on the St Lawrence River, before taking to the open waters off the Gaspe Peninsula. The local fishermen soon invited her aboard to reel in their lobster nets, and Roxanne saw for herself that the sunrise over Bonaventure never lies. We Were the Salt of the Sea is her fifth novel, and her first to be translated into English. She lives in Quebec. ABOUT THE BOOK Against the beauty of Cornwall, a story of two women struggling with their past: one cannot remember hers, the other cannot forget... When Hebe receives a life-changing diagnosis at only 53, she struggles to make sense of what it will mean for her, her job and the man she loves. With memories slipping away by the day, she flees to the one place she has always felt safe and peaceful - Cornwall, and the house her family spent so many summers in. Lucy is having her own crisis, and seizes the chance to follow her aunt to Cornwall. Curious about what has driven Hebe there after so many years, she also has to battle with the secret she has kept since her family's last summer there more than ten years ago. Both women will learn that memories live in our hearts and that sharing secrets can set you free... But can they find their way back to the things that are truly important to them? MY REVIEW ONE CORNISH SUMMER by Liz Fenwick is a beautifully atmospheric and emotional story of family, love, and recognising the important things in life. Hebe can no longer ignore her failing health but as she struggles with what is to become of her and those she loves, a chance image in a newspaper spurs her to return to Cornwall, the one place which has always felt like home to her. Lucy, her niece, is also going through changes in her life and when she needs to disappear for a little while. following her Aunt to Cornwall seems like a good idea. But the old house in Cornwall doesn't hold the same peaceful memories as it does for her Aunt, and Lucy will have to face the past if she is ever to be happy. Wonderfully detailed with exquisite settings, ONE CORNISH SUMMER by Liz Fenwick is the emotional tale of two women who must face up to what is happening and has happened, in their lives, if they are ever to move on. While there are certainly parts of this story which will make you shed a tear, there are also lovely moments of laughter, hope, and love to brighten up the way. The characters are engaging and compelling as they always are in a Liz Fenwick novel, but I really had a soft spot for Hebe who I just wanted to hug so much. With secrets, drama, and the stunning scenery of Cornwall as a backdrop, ONE CORNISH SUMMER by Liz Fenwick is another superb story from a master of the writing craft and I cannot wait for more from Liz. AUTHOR BIO I was born in Massachusetts and after nine international moves - the final one lasting eight years in Dubai- I now live in Cornwall and London with my husband and a cat. ABOUT THE BOOK After her mother's death, twenty-year-old Sophie Ross is left orphaned in London. With no money and little chance of an income, she tries to get work as a governess to avoid destitution. Now alone in the world, she only has the company of her erstwhile nursemaid and faithful friend, Hannah. But unbeknown to Sophie, her mother instructed Hannah to post a letter to Craigmore House in Cornwall upon her death. The letter will be the catalyst that changes Sophie's life forever as she learns of her mother's romance, marriage and then ultimate rejection by her own father and the estranged family she left behind in Cornwall. The Kilpatrick family welcome Sophie and Hannah into their fold, but tensions rise and family secrets are revealed as Sophie attempts to rebuild her life and find happiness. MY REVIEW Diney Costeloe has done it again with another beautiful, emotional, and heartfelt historical novel that will take your breath away. Sophie Ross lives a simple but content life with her mother and nursemaid Hannah even though she grieves for the tragic loss of her father, as they all do. But when her mother sadly passes on, Sophie realises that she must try to find work or they will find themselves in dire circumstances. But what she doesn't know is that her mother's family has been informed of what has happened and Sophie finds herself taken to Cornwall to a family that she never knew existed. As Sophie learns more about her mother and the family that she belongs to, there will be tension, secrets, danger, and love as Sophie uses her own strength to find her way but will it all work out? MISS MARY'S DAUGHTER by Diney Costeloe brings the past alive with beautiful prose and detailed settings and as always characters that become like family. Sophie and Hannah are wonderful characters and I love their strength and determination throughout, but my favourite character has to be a certain little girl who is nobody's fool (you'll see what I mean when you read it). There is hope, there is darkness, poverty and there are those who are not what they seem, all mixed throughout with this compelling story of love, the wildness of nature, and hope, and I could not put this book down until I got to the end. MISS MARY'S DAUGHTER by Diney Costeloe is simply a must for historical fiction fans. AUTHOR BIO Encouraged by my publisher father, I have been writing all my life. When I was five, he took my first effort to his office and brought it back in a cardboard cover with the label, 'Tom's Party'written by Diney, published by Daddy. I've never looked back and always have some writing on the go. To date I have written 10 romantic novels under the name of Diney Delancey (I liked the shape of the name and it sounded like a romantic novelist) and four novels as Diney Costeloe. ABOUT THE BOOK Members of an Egyptian expedition fall victim to an ancient mummy's curse in a thrilling Veronica Speedwell novel from the New York Times bestselling author of the Lady Julia Grey mysteries. London, 1888. As colorful and unfettered as the butterflies she collects, Victorian adventuress Veronica Speedwell can’t resist the allure of an exotic mystery—particularly one involving her enigmatic colleague, Stoker. His former expedition partner has vanished from an archaeological dig with a priceless diadem unearthed from the newly discovered tomb of an Egyptian princess. This disappearance is just the latest in a string of unfortunate events that have plagued the controversial expedition, and rumors abound that the curse of the vengeful princess has been unleashed as the shadowy figure of Anubis himself stalks the streets of London. But the perils of an ancient curse are not the only challenges Veronica must face as sordid details and malevolent enemies emerge from Stoker’s past. Caught in a tangle of conspiracies and threats—and thrust into the public eye by an enterprising new foe—Veronica must separate facts from fantasy to unravel a web of duplicity that threatens to cost Stoker everything. . . . MY REVIEW I had one question to ask when I finished reading this Victorian mystery - when is the next book in this series going to be released because I need to read it NOW!!!! Compelling, thrilling, and completely addictive, A TREACHEROUS CURSE by Deanna Raybourn is the perfect historical mystery and I devoured this book in one sitting. In London, in 1888 an ancient Egyptian curse has plagued an English expedition and seems to have followed those involved back to England. With a man missing alongside a priceless diadem, the authorities are called in. But Veronica Speedwell and her mysterious colleague Stoker soon find themselves caught him in this mystery because for Stoker it involves those who have wreaked havoc on his life in the past and changed him into the man he is today. And to make things even stranger, the ghost of Anubis is striking fear into the hearts of many as it roams the streets of London. But if Veronica and Stoker do not uncover who is behind it all, Stoker may just find himself as a scapegoat for the second time in his life ... With plenty of mystery, detailed history, and witty moments throughout, A TREACHEROUS CURSE by Deanna Raybourn went above and beyond my expectations and had me hooked from the very beginning. While this is the third book in this series it is easily read as a standalone which is what I did, but I have already bought the previous two books because I loved these characters so much. Veronica is everything you want in a main character - strong, intelligent, blunt, and witty, and a pleasure to read, and I loved how much she flaunted her uniqueness. Stoker is more mysterious but in this story, we certainly get to see more of the man beneath the cooler facade. Also clever and humorous, I loved the relationship that exists between these two - two similar people who are different from most of society, who understand each other's idiosyncrasies, and their mutual respect and admiration for each other which I have to say I hope will lead to more. The drama, the setting, the history, and the dialogue are all excellent and I could easily imagine this on our tv screens. A TREACHEROUS CURSE by Deanna Raybourn is a must-read for Victorian mystery and historical fiction fans worldwide and I cannot wait for the next book in this series!! AUTHOR BIO A sixth-generation native Texan, New York Times bestselling author Deanna Raybourn graduated from the University of Texas at San Antonio with a double major in English and history and an emphasis on Shakespearean studies.
