ABOUT THIS BOOK Victor Tuchman - a power-hungry real estate developer and an all-round bad man - is finally on his deathbed. His daughter Alex feels she can finally unearth the secrets of who he really was and what he did over the course of his life. She travels to New Orleans to be with her family, but mostly to interrogate her tight-lipped mother, Barbra. As Barbra fends off Alex's unrelenting questions, she reflects on her tumultuous married life. Meanwhile Gary, Alex's brother, is incommunicado, trying to get his movie career off the ground in Los Angeles. And Gary's wife, Twyla, is having a nervous breakdown, buying up all the lipstick in drug stores while bursting into crying fits. As each family member grapples with Victor's history, they must figure out a way to move forward - with one another, for themselves and for the sake of their children. MY REVIEW Families are complicated beasts and this concept is thoughtfully developed throughout ALL THIS COULD BE YOURS by Jami Attenberg. Victor Tuchman is dying and it appears that nobody cares. A selfish tyrant his whole life, Victor is now reaping what he has sowed in the shape of two children, now grown up, who are waiting for him to leave this world so they can breathe again. Alex wants to know more about why her mother Barbra always defended and turned a blind eye to the monster she was married to, and Gary is hiding from it all, including his own wife and child. Can learning more about the past help a family heal and move onto a fresh page in the story of life? Or is digging up old wounds sure to hurt more than ever? ALL THIS COULD BE YOURS introduces to this family that are at odds and disconnected in many ways, for many important reasons. Alex feels like now she might have a chance to understand her mother more and what motivated her to stay in her life, but what Alex really wants to find is a sense of peace with what the past so that she can be the best mum to her daughter. Each character has their own demons to slay and I enjoyed the layout of the story, whereby each chapter was from a different character's point of view, allowing us to learn about them all in their own time. This isn't a fast-paced, energetic, drama, but rather a slow unfurling of betrayals, secrets, and sadness involving each character and shaping each character in different ways. Compelling in many ways, ALL THIS COULD BE YOURS is sure to please many readers around the world. ABOUT THIS BOOK Buying a thatched cottage in the country may not be the usual cure for a broken heart. But after Clara Maxwell finds out her boyfriend and best friend have been sneaking around behind her back, packing her bags and leaving everything in London behind feels like it's the only way forward. Clara knew Acorn Cottage would be a fixer-upper... Yet in person, the cottage is less charmingly ramshackle and more a real health and safety concern. When Henry Garnett, her (rather handsome) new contractor, turns up with his little daughter Pansy and a van shaped like a cottage in tow, she isn't sure whether to laugh or cry. What on earth has she gotten herself into?! Still, there is something strangely lovable about the people in the little village of Merryknowe, from Rachel Brown, the quiet, lonely girl who bakes magical confections for the tearooms, to Tassie McIver, a little old lady with a lot of wisdom and a penchant for reading tea leaves. And Clara can't deny that Henry and Pansy are quickly worming their way into her heart... With all the heartbreak of the year behind her, could Acorn Cottage be the fresh start Clara so desperately wants? MY REVIEW A beautiful cover for a beautiful story, STARTING OVER AT ACORN COTTAGE by Kate Forster is the kind of book that you can lose yourself in and travel to a place that is as interesting as it's characters. Clara has always been sensible but when she discovers that her long-term partner was having an affair with her so-called best friend, she had enough. So she walked away from her career, her flat, and her past, and bought a cosy cottage in the country where she hoped to lick her wounds. But the cottage isn't exactly cosy and needs some work, and the locals aren't exactly the picture of happiness and joy. As Clara settles in and begins to get to know everyone and their sometimes complicated lives, she may just find out what happiness truly is ... The setting in this book is as fascinating and compelling as the characters which always makes a story just that little bit more special for me. Clara is a wonderful character who instantly felt like a close friend and I loved watching her face every challenge head-on and never give up. Tassie is a gem and my heart broke for Rachel, and there are plenty of others to warm your heart - but not them all!! STARTING OVER AT ACORN COTTAGE by Kate Forster is a story about new beginnings and being brave enough to let go of the past and reach for something different, and I look forward to reading more from this author. AUTHOR BIO I live in Melbourne, Australia with my husband, two children and dogs and I can be found nursing a laptop, surrounded by magazines and talking on the phone, usually all at once. ABOUT THIS BOOK All she needed was one person to take notice - one person who could catapult her into the big time Gabriella Alvarez dreams of being the next Coco Chanel. Born in the Bronx of Puerto Rican descent, she lives with her mother and beloved grandmother, Lita, who recognises the young girl s talent and teaches her to sew. When Gabriella gains a coveted scholarship to the famous Parson s School of Design on Fifth Avenue, she is thrilled. There she meets the beautiful, aspiring model Isabelle Flynn and together they vow to make it to the top. Then superstar fashion designer Oberon crosses her path and she sees her chance. If only he d notice her. If only he wasn t so out of reach ... This is a story of a young girl s determination to achieve the American Dream. Life throws obstacles in her way, but she never gives up, intent on achieving her heart s desire. MY REVIEW A salve to the soul in these anxious times, GABRIELLA by Caragh Bell is the perfect book to escape in to and lose yourself for a few hours. Gabriella comes from a loving, hard-working family, where her mother works tirelessly as a maid for a wealthy family to provide for those she loves. A talented dress designer, Gabriella is determined to succeed so she can ease the pressure for her family and do something that she completely adores. Alongside her is her friend Isabelle who is equally determined to make it as a top model and a host of wonderful and not so wonderful characters who may just provide them with their next big break. But will money and fame be all that it is cracked up to be? And will love factor into Gabriella's happiness at all? From the very beginning, I completely fell in love with the flow and feel of this story and it held me captive to the very end. There are plenty of characters to sink your teeth into, and I adored all of the many relationships that grow and change along the way. Learning about the dedication and detail involved in the fashion world was fascinating and really added a special element to this story but it is not overly bogged down with technical details which was appreciated. GABRIELLA is a story about friendship, ambition, and love. There are highs and lows, ebbs and flows, and everything in between in this story of learning who you are and what you want from life, love, and career, and I enjoyed every moment of GABRIELLA by Caragh Bell. I cannot wait for more from this talented, Irish author. AUTHOR BIO Caragh Bell lives in West Cork with her husband and five children. She is the best-selling author of the Follow Your Heart trilogy. ABOUT THIS BOOK Operation Treadstone made Jason Bourne, but he's not the only agent they trained. Treadstone nearly destroyed Adam Hayes. The top-secret CIA Black Ops program trained him to be an all-but-invincible assassin, but it also cost him his family and any chance at a normal life. Which is why he was determined to get out. Working as a carpenter in rural Washington state, Adam thinks he has left Treadstone in the past, until he receives a mysterious email from a former colleague, and soon after is attacked by an unknown hit team at work. Adam must regain the skills that Operation Treadstone taught him – lightning reflexes and a cold conscience – in order to discover who the would-be killers are and why they have come after him now. Are his pursuers enemies from a long-ago mission? Rival intelligence agents? Or, perhaps, forces inside Treadstone? His search will unearth secrets in the highest levels of government and pull him back into the shadowy world he worked so hard to forget. MY REVIEW Action-packed and full of energy from the very first page, THE TREADSTONE RESURRECTION by Joshua Hood does exactly what it says on the cover and I can't wait for more. Adam Hayes lost so much to Treadstone but he is slowly trying to find his way back to a semblance of a normal life. It's hard but it will be worth it if he can get his family back. But when an old friend sends him an email, everything is turned on its head, and Adam is being hunted by professional killers, just like himself. Who wants him dead and why? How can Adam get to the truth and how many innocent people will die in the process? In a world where power is more important than anything else, can Adam turn the tables and become the hunter and skilled killer he was taught to be? Reading this book is like being at the cinema and watching it on the big screen only better. I felt the buzz of adrenaline kick in when Adam is attacked, I felt the tension and danger around every corner, and I thoroughly enjoyed trying to piece it all together alongside Adam as he tries to hunt down those who have set off this chain of events that are destroying his life. THE TREADSTONE RESURRECTION by Joshua Hood is everything you could want in a spy thriller and then some, with characters that you will love and loathe, and action that feels exciting, threatening, and every other emotion in between. A fantastic start to an exciting new series. AUTHOR BIO Robert Ludlum was the author of twenty-seven novels, each one a New York Times bestseller. ABOUT THIS BOOK FEAR Tuva’s been living clean in southern Sweden for four months when she receives horrifying news. Her best friend Tammy Yamnim has gone missing. SECRETS Racing back to Gavrik at the height of Midsommar, Tuva fears for Tammy’s life. Who has taken her, and why? And who is sabotaging the small-town search efforts? LIES Surrounded by dark pine forest, the sinister residents of Snake River are suspicious of outsiders. Unfortunately, they also hold all the answers. On the shortest night of the year, Tuva must fight to save her friend. The only question is who will be there to save Tuva? MY REVIEW Compelling, tense, and twisted in its very own special way, makes BLACK RIVER by Will Dean one of the best books I have read this year. Tuva is back in Gavrik but not because she wants to be. She was trying to get her life in order in a new place, with a new job and giving up alcohol. But she had to come back because her best friend, Tammy, has gone missing and nobody appears to be taking it seriously. But when another woman disappears, the town suddenly starts paying attention and you can almost feel the fear among this isolated community. Who has taken them? Why? And will they be found before it is too late? Haunting is a word that matches this book perfectly. From the very beginning, there is an eeriness that creeps up your back as you delve deep into this wild landscape alongside Tuva, as she tries to find her friend. Tuva is the kind of friend we would all need - determined, brave, intelligent, and always willing to push the boundaries for the truth. As always with Will Dean's books, I had no idea who had Tammy or why and when the truth came out, it shocked me and gave me that involuntary shiver that only his books can. BLACK RIVER by Will Dean is the third book in this series and I highly recommend that you read all three because they are special in a way that is hard to describe. I always thought that living in a little cabin in the forest, with no neighbours and just nature for company would be idyllic, but after reading these books, I have to say I'm second guessing the idea!! An excellent story and I cannot wait for more. AUTHOR BIO Will Dean grew up in the East Midlands and had lived in nine different villages before the age of eighteen. After studying Law at the LSE and working in London, he settled in rural Sweden where he built a house in a boggy clearing at the centre of a vast elk forest, and it’s from this base that he compulsively reads and writes. His debut novel, Dark Pines, was selected for Zoe Ball’s Book Club, shortlisted for the Guardian Not the Booker prize and named a Daily Telegraph Book of the Year. The second Tuva Moodyson mystery, Red Snow, was published in January 2019 and won Best Independent Voice at the Amazon Publishing Readers' Awards, 2019. ABOUT THIS BOOK Four friends with dark secrets. One killer out for revenge. DI Frank Farrell and DS McLeod are tasked with investigating the brutal murder of a defence solicitor’s wife in Dumfries. It’s been over a year since they left the town after an investigation robbed them of a dear friend. But now they’re back and must find a way to move on. When the son of another defence solicitor is murdered, a strange tattoo etched on his body, the case takes them into darker, more disturbing territory. It leads them back into the past – to a horrific fire in a cottage that took a woman’s life, to four friends harbouring dark secrets – and finally to a killer waiting patiently for revenge. MY REVIEW It felt so great to be back with Farrell and McLeod even if it was under such dark and chilling circumstances, and I can safely say that AVENGE THE DEAD by Jackie Baldwin is my favourite book so far in this series (but I definitely recommend that you read all three). When a wealthy solicitor's wife is found brutally murdered in her own home, it pulls DI Frank Farrell and DS McLeod back to the small community of Dumfries which still holds a lot of harrowing memories for them both, especially Farrell. But this case definitely seems to have them stumped and when another body turns up in connection to another solicitor, Farrell and McLeod will do whatever it takes to get to the truth. As they dig deeper into this close group of friends, a shared bond over the past may be coming back to haunt them. But who will be targeted next? Throw in blackmail, drugs, a secret society, and some truly sick individuals, and this police procedural will blow your mind. AVENGE THE DEAD by Jackie Baldwin is the third book in this series and is simply superb from start to finish. I have always loved the way that Farrell and McLeod work together and their relationship with each other, and this hasn't changed. Frank is struggling with what happened in the past, his loss of faith, and his growing awareness of his partner, and I desperately want him to feel content with his life again. And DS McLeod is my hero - strong, feisty, caring, and intelligent. AVENGE THE DEAD by Jackie Baldwin is fresh with excellent characters, and as always, left me looking forward to the next book in this series. Jackie Baldwin is a crime fiction force to be reckoned with. AUTHOR BIO Jackie Baldwin was born in Dumfries. She studied law at Edinburgh University returning to Dumfries to practice criminal and family law for the next twenty years. During that time she married and had two children and a variety of pets. She later retrained as a hypnotherapist. Her DI Frank Farrell series is set in Dumfries and Galloway in SW Scotland. She has recently moved closer to Edinburgh. ABOUT THIS BOOK If someone was in your house, you’d know … Wouldn’t you? But the Hunter family are deaf, and don’t hear a thing when a shocking crime takes place in the middle of the night. Instead, they wake up to their worst nightmare: the murder of their daughter. The police call Paige Northwood to the scene to interpret for the witnesses. They’re in shock, but Paige senses the Hunters are hiding something. One by one, people from Paige’s community start to fall under suspicion. But who would kill a little girl? Was it an intruder? Or was the murderer closer to home? MY REVIEW Disturbing, horrifying, and shocking are just some of the words that I would use to describe THE SILENT HOUSE by Nell Pattinson but the most apt word I could use would have to be engrossing. I picked this one up as I settled down with a cup of tea one evening and next thing I knew it was after midnight and I was turning the last page - it is that good! When a horrific crime is committed in the Hunter household, the community is shocked to its core. A little girl has been brutally murdered in the middle of the night and nobody knows what happened. Especially the family that was in the house as they are deaf and woke up to discover what had happened. But are they hiding something? Enter Paige Northwood, the local interpreter, who cannot help but feel that there is so much more to this case than meets the eye. As Paige interprets for everyone involved and tries to uncover secrets among the deaf community, she obviously steps on someone's toes because suddenly she is getting targeted and whoever the killer is, will do whatever it takes to get away with murder ... Imagine how terrifying it would be to wake up and discover that someone had come into your home and murdered one of your family. Add in the extra element of the family involved being deaf and this story opened my eyes to a whole different world of fear, and the importance of sign language and interpreters became apparent. Paige is a strong character and I really respected her dogged determination to find out the truth and not turn a blind eye to what she suspected. I had my own suspicions that switched throughout the story and there are plenty of twists and turns that will throw you off course along the way, and this book is sure to keep you hooked to the very end. THE SILENT HOUSE by Nell Pattinson is a gripping and chilling story of obsession and anger and is sure to be a huge hit, just as it deserves. AUTHOR BIO After studying English at university, Nell Pattison became a teacher and specialised in Deaf education. She has been teaching in the Deaf community for 12 years in both England and Scotland, working with students who use BSL. Nell began losing her hearing in her twenties, and now wears hearing aids. She lives in North Lincolnshire with her husband and son. The Silent House is her debut novel. ABOUT THIS BOOK Everyone brings baggage to a new relationship. When Alex met Natalie she changed his life. After the tragic death of his first wife, which left him a single parent to teenage daughter Jade, he’s determined to build a happy family. But his new-found happiness is shattered when the family home is gutted by fire and his loyalties are unexpectedly tested. Jade insists she saw a man in the house on the night of the fire; Natalie denies any knowledge of such an intruder. Alex is faced with an impossible choice: to believe his wife or his daughter? And as Natalie’s story unravels, Alex realises that his wife has a past he had no idea about, a past that might yet catch up with her. But this time, the past could be deadly . . . MY REVIEW Rebecca Fleet's first thriller, The House Swap, was gripping from the very first page and THE SECOND WIFE is no different - a twisting tale of lies and danger that I thoroughly enjoyed. Alex wasn't sure if he would ever fall in love again after the death of his wife, and mother of his little girl, but when he met Natalie everything changed. Natalie brought happiness back into their lives and over the years did everything she could to make Jade and himself feel loved and cherished. Tragedy strikes again on a night when Alex is on a night out, when their house is burned down and Natalie and Jade narrowly escape with their lives. Except Jade claims that it wasn't an accident. She saw a man in the house who frightened her but Natalie denies the existence of this man. Who is lying and more importantly why? As Alex starts to dig a little deeper into what happened that night, he soon realises that Natalie isn't exactly what she appears to be and the secrets from her past may just cost someone their life ... Compelling, fresh, and with plenty of twists and turns to keep you on your toes, THE SECOND WIFE by Rebecca Fleet is sure to be a hit with all thriller and suspense fans. I enjoyed wearing my detective hat alongside Alex as he tried to understand what is happening to his world and just who exactly wants to hurt them, but this well-detailed plot certainly left me guessing. THE SECOND WIFE by Rebecca Fleet is a cracking good read and I am looking forward to the next book already! AUTHOR BIO Rebecca Fleet lives in London and works in Windsor. Her debut thriller, The House Swap, was published in 2018 to great acclaim. The Second Wife is her eagerly anticipated second thriller.
