ABOUT THIS BOOK What if a prank leads to murder? When Freya arrives at her dream job with the city's hottest start-up, she can't wait to begin a new and exciting life, including dating her new colleague Jay. However, Nicole, Jay's ex and fellow employee, seems intent on making her life a misery. After a big deadline, where Nicole continually picks on her, Freya snaps and tells Jay about the bullying and together they concoct a revenge prank. The next morning, Nicole is found dead in her apartment . . . Is this just a prank gone wrong? Or does Freya know someone who is capable of murder - and could she be next? MY REVIEW A twisted and gripping tale, THE PACT by Amy Heydenrych was completely unexpected in many ways and left me feeling chilled to the bone. Freya has dealt with a lot in her past but she has worked so hard to get where she is today - her dream job for an amazing tech company that is setting the world to rights. But like most things in life, it seems too good to be true and when her work colleague, Nicole. takes an instant dislike to her and isn't afraid to show it, Freya starts to dread being in the same place as her. At least she has met Jay who really understands her so it's not all bad. But when Nicole pushes Freya to the brink, she takes matters into her own hands and a prank plan is formed and executed. Maybe a taste of her own medicine will make Nicole back off. But when Nicole is found brutally murdered the next day, Freya doesn't know what to do or what to think. Who did this and why? Determined to shine a light on the victim's lives rather than just the sordid details, Isla is good at her job as a reporter. But there is something about this case that hits her a little bit harder and feels a little too close to home after what had happened to her in the past. Someone is hiding something and Isla is convinced she can figure out the truth. But will she be too late? Dealing with topics of sexual assault, sexual harassment, and workplace bullying, THE PACT by Amy Heydenrych highlights the everyday reality of this world for so many people. The characters aren't likeable, with the exception of Isla, but they are gripping in a way that I felt compelled to uncover the truth and wanted justice to be served. The story moves from past to present for each chapter which I really enjoyed as the characters became more real that way, and the plot never lagged. There are plenty of twists and turns and unexpected revelations and I'm sure THE PACT by Amy Heydenrych will appeal to psychological thriller readers everywhere. AUTHOR BIO Amy is a writer and book blogger based in South Africa. She has been shortlisted twice for the acclaimed Miles Morland African Writing Scholarship. ABOUT THIS BOOK At the Everdene Hotel, snowflakes, romance and mayhem are in the air... A cosy hotel in a sleepy, snow-covered village should be the perfect setting for a Christmas to remember... But for Beth, returning to her childhood home after a disastrous break-up looks more like a festive fiasco. With her mum stranded in a blizzard and most of the hotel staff off sick, Beth is forced to take the reins, impress a mystery hotel reviewer, and somehow find a way to work with Nick, the very grumpy - and very gorgeous - pilot who is staying for the holidays. Between mince pie emergencies, deadly decorations, and two dozen disgruntled guests, Beth might just find a miracle under the mistletoe this Christmas... MY REVIEW Charming from start to finish, A MISTLETOE MIRACLE by Emma Jackson is sure to put a smile on your face this winter. Beth is back in her childhood home at the Everdene Hotel in a picture-perfect village that is the stuff of tourists' dreams. But Beth is struggling to get into the festive mood after a disastrous breakup that has left her feeling very unsettled and unsure about what she wants from the future. At least helping out at the hotel with her mum will keep her occupied even if she does have to deal with surly customers like Nick, even though he is quite handsome. But when Beth finds herself in charge of the hotel for Christmas with barely any help and a mystery reviewer showing up, will the magic of Christmas find a way to save the day and maybe even open Beth's heart to love again? With a captivating setting that I completely fell in love with and characters that warm your heart, A MISTLETOE MIRACLE by Emma Jackson is truly lovely from beginning to end. I enjoyed watching Beth grow in confidence and tap into her inner-strength as the story progressed and there were plenty of moments that made me smile along the way. A MISTLETOE MIRACLE by Emma Jackson is a lovely story and I look forward to more from this talented new author. AUTHOR BIO A devoted bookworm and secret-story-scribbler since she was 6 years old, Emma joined the Romantic Novelists’ Association on their New Writers’ Scheme at the beginning of 2019, determined to focus on her writing. She has been overwhelmed by the encouragement given by the published authors and fellow NWS members who are part of the RNA and highly recommends joining to any romance writers looking for support and friendly guidance (there are some bursaries available). When she’s not running around after her two daughters and trying to complete her current work-in-progress, Emma loves to read, bake, catch up on binge-watching TV programmes with her partner and plan lots of craft projects that will inevitably end up unfinished. A MISTLETOE MIRACLE is her debut novel, published by Orion Dash in November 2019. Emma also writes historical and speculative romantic fiction as Emma S Jackson. Her second novel, THE DEVIL'S BRIDE will be published by DarkStroke in February 2020. ABOUT THIS BOOK Struggling to find the perfect Christmas gift? Step into Romantic Daze … Daisy Kirk is a sucker for a love story, which is why she opened up her gift shop – because there’s nothing that makes Daisy happier than when she’s helped a customer achieve their own ‘happily ever after’ by finding the perfect Christmas gift for their loved one. And she absolutely does not just sell ‘soppy presents and frilly pants’ as her brother’s infuriating best friend, Eli, is so fond of suggesting. The sad fact is that whilst Daisy is helping others with their love lives, hers is non-existent. But when unusual circumstances take Daisy and Eli on a road trip from London to rural Wales, will she finally get the happily ever after to her own Christmas love story? MY REVIEW The old saying, 'Never judge a book by its cover', has never been truer than for DAISY'S CHRISTMAS GIFT SHOP by Hannah Pearl which has action, adventure, and a hint of danger, as well as love, family, and the real meaning of friendship. Daisy Kirk believes in true, everlasting love, and she has seen it with her own eyes between her parents, even if her Dad lost his spark when their mother died all those years ago. She knows that real love exists and she sees it every day in her clients who come to her special shop to find that something extra-special for their loved ones, even though she struggles with her own love-life. Well, if Daisy was honest, she fell in love years ago with her brother's best friend, Eli, who managed to break her heart. And if she was brutally honest with herself, Daisy would admit that she is still in love with Eli for the kindness he shows her family and the love he has for them all, even if they cannot stop snapping at each other in temper. But when her brother goes missing and could possibly be in danger, Daisy and Eli will join forces, with some extra special help from Daisy's bestie and a possible admirer, and do whatever they must to find him. But the more time they spend together, the more heat flares to life between them. But can Daisy ever find the love she deserves with someone who doesn't believe in happily-ever-after? This book contained so many surprises that I found myself racing through it because I just had to know what was going to happen, and DAISY'S CHRISTMAS GIFT SHOP did not disappoint. I loved all of the characters, especially Daisy's open and honest best friend, and there was honestly never a dull moment. DAISY'S CHRISTMAS GIFT SHOP by Hannah Pearl is a cracking good story and I look forward to reading more from this author. AUTHOR BIO Hannah Pearl was born in East London. She is married with two children and now lives in Cambridge. She has previously worked as a Criminology researcher, as a Development Worker with various charities and even pulled a few pints in her time. In 2015 she was struck down by Labrynthitis, which left her feeling dizzy and virtually housebound. She has since been diagnosed with ME. Reading has allowed Hannah to escape from the reality of feeling ill. She read upwards of three hundred books during the first year of her illness. When her burgeoning eReader addiction grew to be too expensive, she decided to have a go at writing. In 2017 she won Simon and Schuster’s Books and the City #heatseeker short story competition, in partnership with Heat magazine, for her short story The Last Good Day. Book length - 384 pages Publisher - Titan Books BUY LINKS: Worldwide - www.bookdepository.com UK - www.amazon.co.uk US - www.amazon.com I want to thank Sarah from titanbooks.com for providing me with a copy of this gorgeous book. ABOUT THIS BOOK It is 1890, and in the days before Christmas Sherlock Holmes and Dr John Watson are visited at Baker Street by a new client. Eve Allerthorpe - eldest daughter of a grand but somewhat eccentric Yorkshire-based dynasty - is greatly distressed, as she believes she is being haunted by a demonic Christmas spirit. Her late mother told her terrifying tales of the sinister Black Thurrick, and Eve is sure that she has seen the creature from her bedroom window. What is more, she has begun to receive mysterious parcels of birch twigs, the Black Thurrick's calling card... Eve stands to inherit a fortune if she is sound in mind, but it seems that something - or someone - is threatening her sanity. Holmes and Watson travel to the Allerthorpe family seat at Fellscar Keep to investigate, but soon discover that there is more to the case than at first appeared. There is another spirit haunting the family, and when a member of the household is found dead, the companions realise that no one is beyond suspicion. MY REVIEW As always, James Lovegrove has blown me away with this masterpiece of historical fiction featuring my favourite Victorian sleuths, Holmes and Watson. It is the week of Christmas and Holmes and Watson find themselves travelling to Fellscar Keep, a wealthy castle by all accounts, to solve a mystery for their young client, Eve Allerthorpe. In a few days, Eve is due to come into her inheritance from an aunt as long as she is found to be of sound mind. A strange appendage to a will but not surprising considering the problems that her mother suffered with, which resulted in her death over a year ago. But Eve is afraid she is going mad because a childhood monster, known locally as the Black Thurrick, is haunting her and she is terrified. Unwilling to believe in myth and legends, Holmes is determined to uncover the truth, and as there is a huge family gathering for Christmas, there are plenty of suspects, but Watson isn't so quick to dismiss the chance of something supernatural. And when a murder is committed, will this be one case that this dynamic duo will have to walk away from, leaving it unsolved? Roaring to life through James Lovegrove's exquisite descriptions, I felt like I was back in the past at this huge house with this quirky and troubled family, and I never wanted this story to end. Sherlock Holmes and Watson are excellently drawn and I could picture each scene like a movie reel in my mind, making me loathe to put to this story down at any point in my evening. The plot is great and I was delighted and surprised by parts of the story and by the truth behind the drama. If you love Sherlock Holmes or enjoy historical fiction at all, then you need to read SHERLOCK HOLMES & THE CHRISTMAS DEMON by James Lovegrove. It is truly fantastic! AUTHOR BIO James Lovegrove is the author of several acclaimed novels and books for children. Currently James resides in Eastbourne on the Sussex Coast, having moved there in August 2007 with his wife Lou, sons Monty and Theo, and cat Ozzy. He has a terrific view of the sea from his study window, which he doesn’t sit staring out at all day when he should be working. Honest. Book length - 308 pages Publisher - One More Chapter BUY LINKS: UK - www.amazon.co.uk US - www.amazon.com After I mixed up my blog tour dates (so sorry again Jules and Rachel!) I'm delighted to share my review of Notting Hill in the Snow, and thanks again to Rachel from www.rachelsrandomresources.com for providing me with an e-copy of this book for review via Netgalley. ABOUT THIS BOOK A Notting Hill nativity… what could go wrong? Viola Smith plays the viola in an orchestra (yes really!) but this year she's been asked to stretch her musical talents to organising Notting Hill's local nativity. Nate Williams isn't looking forward to Christmas but as his small daughter, Grace, has the starring role in the show, he's forced to stop being a Grinch and volunteer with Viola. With the sparks between them hotter than the chestnuts roasting in Portobello market, Nate and Viola can't deny their feelings. And as the snow starts to fall over London, they find themselves trapped together in more ways than one… MY REVIEW Warm, endearing, and utterly loveable from beginning to end, NOTTING HILL IN THE SNOW by Jules Wake is the perfect winter read and is sure to warm your heart on these cold, dark evenings. When Viola Smith is roped into organising the local nativity in Notting Hill, she is thrown into contact with Nate Williams and his amazing daughter, Grace, who has a starring role in the play. Viola is kind, hardworking, and really puts her all into everything she does and is very considerate of others. And as she and Nate develop a friendly relationship, Nate cannot help but compare her to the other woman in his life, who has stepped out of his life for now. But as Nate and Viola's feelings grow, they both know that nothing can ever happen between them, but who knows what the future holds ... The characters, the setting, and the romance all burst to life in this beautiful story that I clicked with instantly and never wanted to end, to be honest. I loved Viola and Nate, but Nate's little girl Grace really won me over. She is such a clever, thoughtful, and sensitive child and made this great story even better in every way. The author made London appear like a movie in front of my eyes and I could almost feel the crisp air and hear the noise of the city, such is her talent. NOTTING HILL IN THE SNOW by Jules Wake would make the perfect Christmas movie and I highly recommend it to all fiction readers who love a little magic at this time of year. AUTHOR BIO Jules Wake's earliest known declaration that she planned to be a writer came at the age of ten. Along the way she was diverted by the glamorous world of PR. Eventually the voices in her head persuaded her it was time to sit down and write the novel she'd always talked about. Her debut novel, Talk to Me, in 2014, was quickly followed by the bestselling From Italy With Love, which reached the top ten in the Amazon Kindle charts. Since then she has had eight further novels published. Jules' book Covent Garden in the Snow was a Kindle Top 2 bestseller. She also writes cosy romantic fiction as Julie Caplin and her next book, The Northern Lights Lodge, will be published by HarperImpulse in early 2019. Here is everything you need to know about The Perfect Widow: ABOUT THIS BOOK Louise Bridges has the perfect life. A loving husband, Patrick. Two adorable children. A comfortable home. So when PC Becca Holt arrives to break the news that Patrick has been killed in an accident, she thinks Louise’s perfect world is about to collapse around her. But Louise doesn’t react in the way Becca would expect her to on hearing of her husband’s death. And there are only three plates set out for dinner, as if Louise already knew Patrick wouldn’t be home that night… The more Becca digs, the more secrets she uncovers in the Bridges’ marriage – and the more she wonders just how far Louise would go to get what she wants… Is Louise a loving wife – or a cold-hearted killer? EXTRACT Prologue Louise I thought nothing of it, the first time the doorbell rang. Parcel delivery guy – bound to be. It was that time of the evening. School run done, supper running late. They just want to catch you at home, don’t they? Don’t care if the timing’s terrible, up to your elbows in kids and cooking. Not their problem. I did a quick mental scan through my recent purchases. Hmm. A few. Well, I had to keep up appearances. And it was hard to get it right just now. A strange September, sweltering by day, then plunging straight to frost when night fell. I wanted to get everyone twittering in the playground when I appeared in something shiny and new. For a second, I was excited. Was it that red handbag? Bit pricey, but I hadn’t been able to resist. But no, it was bound to be those boots I’d ordered last week on sale. Helping Giles was more important. I looked over at him. Dark head down over the exercise book. Bless. That maths. I could see the line of jagged numbers. He was snagged, like a lamb on a barbed wire fence. But would he ask for help? Ha. I stayed put. Boys. If I didn’t nurse him through it, he’d go off the boil, drift. I’d lose him to that new game, the one he’d been hankering after. He’d be skulking in his bedroom for hours. That would be that. So I called to Emmy – well, yelled. It’s a big house. ‘Love? Can you get that?’ I cocked an ear. No reply, no movement. I sighed inwardly. Girls were no easier. Emmy was 11 going on 17 when it came to attitude. Especially towards her mother. The more love and encouragement I lavished on her, the more elaborate the eye-rolls at everything I said or did. I envied her the freedom to rebel. Did I begrudge it? Most days, no. Today, I was feeling a bit antsy already. I couldn’t face more shouting. That last yell up the stairs had done my head in. It had been a busy day. Very busy. I was about to give in and get up, but then Giles turned to me. ‘Don’t go, Mum. I can’t do this.’ The voice was all over the place, now he was 13 – Barry White one minute, Sam Smith the next. That pushed-out bottom lip, though, was the same as when he’d been 4, trying to ride his new bike without any help from us, and coming a cropper. I smiled, love filling me like light pouring through a window. Who could resist? The bell shrilled again. I couldn’t break off, not now Giles was finally concentrating, but I certainly didn’t want to be schlepping to the post office tomorrow to pick up those boots. Outside, the guy would be scribbling the usual hieroglyphs on his card, ready to drop and run. I was torn. But, just in time, there was Emmy, scampering down the stairs, two at a time. Miracle. Bless her. That was the only little-girl thing about her, the bouncy gait. She never did it again, after that afternoon. I turned back to Giles. ‘Now, you take this number…’ But I still had half an ear out for Em. Heavy click as the door opened. Murmurs. The sharp slap of cold air. Distant street sounds. More talking. Too much. I thought for a beat, then two. Why would she chat to the delivery guy? And was that two adult voices I could hear? A man and a woman? Something was off. But it couldn’t be… could it? Not yet. Surely not. Then her stifled gasp. I breathed in, hard. But I was still reluctant to leave Giles, the books and pens at the table. If I didn’t move, everything would stay the same. The cluttered table, the peaceful room, the pristine house. My house, that I’d fought so hard for. I was paralysed. ‘Mum!’ Now there was no mistaking the bleat of fear in Emmy’s voice. But I sang out, ‘No need to yell, love,’ as though she was just being a pain as per usual. I pushed myself up, felt a twinge. It had been a long day, my muscles ached. That morning pilates class. And the rest. I even remembered to give the spag bol a quick stir as I passed the stove. ‘Mum!’ came the shout again, desperate now. ‘Coming.’ But as soon as I got out into the hall, there was no more escaping it. The door was flung wide open. Cold air, gusting in, knifing us after the sizzling day. Normally, I would have told Emmy off, letting the heat out, letting too many curious neighbours peer in, but my eyes flew straight past her to the two figures in the doorway, silhouettes bulky against the cold blue lights pulsing from their car. Police. This was real. It was actually happening. I felt sick, but my voice stayed steady. ‘Patrick,’ I said, looking from one granite face to the other, automatically reaching for Emmy. She burrowed her head into my side. I heard the maths book thud heavily from Giles’s hand, his chair scrape back. He ran out into the hall. And then we were three. ABOUT THIS BOOK Two years ago, Ben Fenton went camping for the night with his brother Leo. When Ben woke up, he was covered in blood, and his brother had gone. Days later, Ben was facing a charge of murder. Ben's girlfriend, Ana Seabrook, has always sworn he was innocent. And now, on the hottest day of a sweltering heat wave, a body has been unearthed in Ana's village. A body that might be connected to what really happened between Ben and Leo that fateful night. DCI Jansen, of St Albans police, is sure that Ana has something to hide. But until the police track down the identity of the body, he can't work out how everything's connected. Will Ana's secrets stay buried forever? Or can Jansen bring them to light? MY REVIEW A twisted tale of secrets and lies, THE SCORCHED EARTH by Rachael Blok is a solid story with solid characters. Two years ago Ben's life was changed forever when he went camping with his brother and awoke to find him missing, and blood everywhere. Tried and found guilty of his murder, Ben is now in prison where he desperately tries to survive and come to grips with the fact that there is no hope for him. Until a body is discovered in the village where Ana, his girlfriend, lives. When it appears that the body is that of Leo's it brings the case back to life but there is something strange about the whole case that has DCI Jansen very suspicious. Just what the hell happened that night? And what is Ana hiding? Moving from past to present, and watching the plot unfold from different characters' points of view, worked well for me as I never felt the plot slow down and it kept the tension on high alert at all times. I didn't realise that this story is actually the second book in a series but it can easily be read as a standalone. The drama, the atmosphere, and the setting all work well together and I found myself invested in uncovering the truth. THE SCORCHED EARTH by Rachael Blok is a story of surprises, and while it doesn't read like a traditional police procedural, it has a little bit of everything for those who enjoy crime fiction, suspense, and psychological thrillers. AUTHOR BIO Rachael Blok grew up in Durham and now lives in Hertfordshire. Her crime series is set in the cathedral city of St Albans. Here, Maarten Jansen struggles against his plain-speaking Dutch upbringing when faced with the seemingly polite world of the picturesque city. Under the Ice is her first novel. After studying English Literature at Warwick University, she taught in a boys' comprehensive in Holland Park. She is now a full-time author. About writing, she has said: 'I'm constantly surprised how differently stories turn out on paper than in their original planning. Fiction has a life of its own'. ABOUT THIS BOOK Glamorous Ronnie Percy has been back home in the Cotswolds for a year. But not everyone has forgiven her for abandoning her family twenty-five years ago. Ronnie's daughter Pax is fighting for custody of her small son as her own marriage disintegrates. Now she is furious to have to spend New Year's Eve waiting to meet some stranger, invited by her mother to help run the family stud farm. The staunchly loyal head groom, Lester, is even more annoyed. Does Ronnie think he's lost his touch? Luca O'Brien, Irish charmer and reputed heart-breaker, is known throughout the countryside as the Horsemaker. But what happened to Luca's beautiful stallion, Beck, now broken and unrideable in the Compton Magna stables? And what is Luca running away from? MY REVIEW Witty, addictive, and with plenty of drama to sink your teeth into. COUNTRY LOVERS by Fiona Walker is entertaining from beginning to end. It has been a year since Ronnie returned to the Cotswolds and the not-so-loving bosom of her family, who are still struggling with her disappearance from their lives all those years ago. But she is back now and ready to make changes to the family business. And first up is the hiring of Luca O'Brien, a genius with horses and a reputation as a lothario. But beneath the facade, is Luca hiding something? This new employee rubs plenty of people up the wrong way, including Ronnie's daughter, who has her own family issues to wade through, and the last thing she needs is Luca hanging around. But as drama, secrets, and mysterious goings-on begin to surface, will the stables and the family find their way through it together? Clever, amusing, and with truly unique characters, COUNTRY LOVERS by Fiona Walker is the perfect tonic after a long, hard day. While this is the second book in this series, I easily read it as a standalone but you may as well buy both books and immerse yourself in Fiona Walker's excellent writing. Sharp and detailed, the story flowed effortlessly and I fell under the spell of these characters as I began to get to know them all and all of the baggage that they are dealing with. COUNTRY LOVERS by Fiona Walker is a fantastic story with memorable characters and a must-read this winter. So what are you waiting for? Happy reading! AUTHOR BIO Fiona Walker is the author of eighteen novels, from tales of flat-shares and clubbing in nineties London to today's romping, rural romances set amid shires, spires and stiles. In a career spanning over two decades, she's grown up alongside her readers, never losing her wickedly well-observed take on life, lust and the British in love. She lives in Warwickshire, sharing a slice of Shakespeare Country with her partner, their two daughters and a menagerie of animals.
