ABOUT THIS BOOK Lucia’s fingers found her own. She gazed at Caro as if from a distance. Her lips parted, her words a whisper: ‘He knows.’ London, 1782. Desperate for her politician husband to return home from France, Caroline ‘Caro’ Corsham is already in a state of anxiety when she finds a well-dressed woman mortally wounded in the bowers of the Vauxhall Pleasure Gardens. The Bow Street constables are swift to act, until they discover that the deceased woman was a highly paid prostitute, at which point they cease to care entirely. But Caro has motives of her own for wanting to see justice done, and so sets out to solve the crime herself. Enlisting the help of thieftaker Peregrine Child, their inquiry delves into the hidden corners of Georgian society, a world of artifice, deception and secret lives. But with many gentlemen refusing to speak about their dealings with the dead woman, and Caro’s own reputation under threat, finding the killer will be harder, and more treacherous, than she can know . . . MY REVIEW Exquisitely-detailed with characters that capture the imagination, DAUGHTERS OF NIGHT by Laura Shepherd-Robinson is a historical novel that will captivate you from beginning to end. It's 1782 and Caro Corsham has discovered the body of a fellow noble lady in the bowers of the Vauxhall Pleasure Gardens. Horrified and demanding justice be served, it is soon uncovered that this was no polite lady of society but a well-known prostitute called Lucy. And with that, the interest to uncover the killer dissipates as who cares about a woman of the night? But Caro will not be dissuaded and hires a thief-taker of her own to solve the mystery. But the more information they dig up, the more dangerous this becomes and Caro will soon come to realise that the powerful men involved have a lot to hide and are more than willing to kill again to keep their secrets hidden. Georgian society comes alive in this story and the author genuinely makes you feel like you are right there with the characters, even when you don't want to be. The horrific treatment of women at the time is flawlessly woven into the tale and I loved seeing a well-to-do female character recognise the worth of all women in this story and fight for justice, even though she has her own type of limitations placed on her too. There are plenty of clues, misdirections, twists, and turns in this book which I absolutely loved, and I must admit I changed my mind regularly over who I thought the culprit was. DAUGHTERS OF NIGHT by Laura Shepherd-Robinson is brimming with lust, power, murder, misguided romance, and more hiding among its pages, but more importantly strong, female characters who stand up for themselves at every turn. I look forward to reading more from this talented author. AUTHOR BIO Laura Shepherd-Robinson worked in politics for nearly twenty years before re-entering normal life to complete an MA in Creative Writing at City University. Blood & Sugar, her first novel, was shortlisted for the Crime Writers’ Association John Creasey (New Blood) Dagger and the Sapere Historical Dagger; the Historical Writers’ Association Debut Crown; and the Amazon Publishing/Capital Crime Best Debut Novel. ABOUT THIS BOOK The Murdering Wives Club is a support group for women who wish to murder their husbands. Or so the rumour goes. Returning home from World War II, Laurie Davenport is blind and traumatised. He is also convinced that his wife, Charlotte, is trying to kill him. With the help of his assistant, the enigmatic Norah Walsh, Laurie hunts for proof of these killer women. Then convicted Irish murderer Eve Good claims to have belonged to a club of murdering wives called The Sinful Roses. She agrees to recount her harrowing crimes to Laurie and Norah. Can Eve Good shed light on this obscure matter? Can a blind, amateur detective succeed in exposing this terrifying group of murdering women? And in his darkened world, whom can he trust? MY REVIEW Riveting characters, a fresh plot, and that all-important mystery that we just need to unravel, all combine to make THE MURDERING WIVES CLUB by Sharon Thompson her best book yet! Laurie Davenport is struggling to come to terms with his injuries obtained in the war which is still battling on. Back home in his childhood haven, Davenport House, he finds some comfort but he is convinced that his wife, Charlotte, is trying to kill him as she doesn't want to be saddled with a blind man for a husband. The only ray of light in his life is the conversations and friendship that he has developed with his new assistant, Norah Walsh. And when Norah brings to him a story about a club called The Sinful Roses - a group of women who want to kill their husbands - they both begin an investigation that will take them down paths that they never imagined. Is Charlotte a part of this club? Is she really trying to kill him? And can Laurie trust their only source, a criminal known for lies and deception? Can he trust anyone? From the very first page, this story had me hooked and it kept me hooked to the very end. I instantly liked Laurie and wanted him to find purpose in his new way of living, and Norah was almost hypnotic in the way that she instantly felt familiar and friendly. As always with Sharon Thompson's writing, history and setting came alive on the page, and a woman's always precarious and unequal position in the world was excellently portrayed. The mystery element of this book was exquisite with plenty of twists to keep it interesting at every point. THE MURDERING WIVES CLUB by Sharon Thompson is historical crime fiction at its finest and I look forward to more from this talented Irish author. Book length - 336 pages Publisher - Mantle BUY LINKS: Worldwide - www.bookdepository.com UK - www.amazon.co.uk US - www.amazon.com I voluntarily reviewed this book from Netgalley. ABOUT THIS BOOK People like Emmy Jackson. They always have. Especially online, where she is Instagram sensation Mamabare, famous for always telling the unvarnished truth about modern parenthood. But Emmy isn’t as honest as she’d like the fans to believe. She may think she has her followers fooled, but someone out there knows the truth and plans to make her pay. Because people like her have no idea what pain careless words can cause. Because people like her need to learn what it feels like to lose everything. MY REVIEW A dark and gripping tale of grief and obsession, PEOPLE LIKE HER by Ellery Lloyd is a hypnotic tale that will pull you in instantly and keep you entranced to the very end. Emmy Jackson never thought that she would be the top mummy influencer on Instagram but that's what she is and she gives it her all. Her life revolves around follower counts, paid ads, PR events, and showing the 'reality' of life as a mum-of-two to her adoring fans who demand more every time. But the pictures on the grid only show what Emmy wants them to show and half the time it isn't reality. But it pays for their lifestyle which is even more important since Dan, her husband, has been writing his second novel for 8 years and doesn't seem to be getting anywhere fast. Sure, Emmy fakes some of her stories and adds the odd little white lie to her captions, but that's social media, isn't it? But when someone becomes obsessed with Emmy and her family, everything takes on a sinister tone. Because someone wants Emmy to pay the ultimate price for what she has done. Like most people, I'm an Instagram fan and spend plenty of time scrolling through my feed so I was instantly interested in the plot of this story which works effortlessly. The dangers of social media are expertly portrayed on all sides - from the followers who compare themselves to their idols and hang on their every word, to those who love to seeth in anger in celebrity's DMs, to the idols themselves who lose themselves to their influencing lifestyle and the addictive type of work that is involved, and will do whatever it takes to stay on top. But it is the detailed characters in this story which make it come alive and as the drama slowly unfolded, I was on the edge of my seat throughout. Sensitive subjects such as losing a child and mental health issues are also highlighted in this story and handled carefully. PEOPLE LIKE HER by Ellery Lloyd is a thriller for our times and I look forward to more from this dynamic writing duo.
