ABOUT THIS BOOK Thirteen guests. One killer. No escape. On an island on the coast of Cornwall, cut off from the mainland by the tides for most of the day, thirteen old friends meet at Tregowan Castle for a weekend of revelry. By the next evening only twelve are still alive. Amongst them is a killer – but who? As a storm traps them on the island and past betrayals and grievances are revealed, nerves fray and friendships begin to fracture. But with no escape and no way of calling for help it’s only a matter of time before the killer strikes again. And when everyone is keeping secrets, anybody could be the next victim… MY REVIEW As soon as I heard the premise of this novel, I knew that it was something that I wanted to read - thirteen people trapped on an island at a party that should be about friendship and family, but is secretly brimming with secrets and betrayal - it sounds gripping, right? Well, it is gripping and a little bit more added on top for good measure. Rachel has always breezed her way through life, doing what she pleased without having to think of the consequences of her actions, but that seems to be synonymous with extreme wealth and privilege. When Rachel invites three of her oldest friends and their families to visit her new home, Tregowan Castle, on its own island, they are unsure what is Rachel's motive behind the invitation. After all, they didn't get invited to her wedding to the much older, Ross Tregowan. But a need to reconnect with Rachel, their families, and a bit of good old-fashioned nosiness soon sees them arriving at the imposing castle, and it isn't long before Rachel is dropping secrets from the past in front of all the wrong people. Because while they may be friends and family there are so many betrayals brimming under the surface, and Rachel is determined to make it all come to light. But when someone is murdered at the dinner party, they will all wonder just who can they actually trust? And when the killer needs to kill again, they are all in danger. A compelling plotline with an excellent setting, THE INVITATION by A.M. Castle is the kind of book that you don't want to put down. The secrets are scandalising and very unusual in some ways, and I love a murder mystery where everyone has a motive and you want to try and figure out the truth before you come upon it and while I had my suspicions, I can happily admit that I was wrong! THE INVITATION by A.M. Castle is an enjoyable read that is sure to please murder mystery fans everywhere. AUTHOR BIO Before turning to crime, A.M. Castle had a long career as a feature writer on national newspapers including the Daily Express, The Times and The Daily Telegraph. ABOUT THIS BOOK Clementine’s swapped a London flat for a Scottish castle – but will she get her fairytale ending? After discovering they had inherited an enormous fortune, as well as the titles of ‘Lady’, the lives of the five Hiverton sisters have never been the same. While oldest sister Ariana settles in Norfolk, fashion designer Clementine heads to the Scottish Highlands to investigate their newly inherited castle. Not bad for a girl brought up in poverty in a tiny house in East London… However, Lady Clem quickly finds out that Ruacoddy Castle is falling to pieces, the neighbours – especially grumpy young farmer, Rory – are suspicious of her and the eccentric housekeeper, Ottoline, is still in residence. But just as Clem starts to embrace her new life in the Highlands, growing closer to Rory and forming a friendship with Ottoline, she stumbles upon a secret in the attic that could destroy the Hiverton family. Can she save the castle as well as her family’s reputation? What happens when an unstoppable force meets an immoveable object? MY REVIEW With a colourful cover that is fun and inviting, I'm delighted to say that I found the story inside equally as engaging. Clem and her sisters grew up knowing what it was like to be poor but the love of their parents more than made up for it. But now they have inherited their Uncle's huge estate in Scotland, their situations in life have certainly changed. After getting betrayed by someone she thought she could trust, fashion designer Clem decides that checking out the castle will be a welcome distraction from her troubles but nothing could have prepared her for life in the Highlands. From the stunning scenery to the breathtaking stillness of the air, Clem falls in love with Scotland instantly. But when she rubs the housekeeper up the wrong way on the first day, finds herself rescuing sheep from ditches in a snowstorm, and starts to unravel the mess that is the finances of the estate, Clem had plenty to get her head around. And that's before she uncovers a buried secret in the attic ... Engaging characters, a stunning castle in the highlands for a setting, and a mystery that will keep you hooked, and HIGH HEELS IN THE HIGHLANDS by Liz Hurley is a wonderful read to get lost in. I loved all of the characters in this book and the sense of friendship and community that came alive on the page and the way the author describes the Highlands truly transported me there every time. This book is a part of a series centred on the sisters but can be easily read as a standalone. HIGH HEELS IN THE HIGHLANDS by Liz Hurley is a thoroughly enjoyable story and I highly recommend it to fiction fans. When the police discover Vince lied about their relationship, they are convinced they have found Layla’s killer. If Vince kept quiet about the affair… what else is he guilty of? MY REVIEW A transfixing story of lies, secrets, and betrayal, THE GUILTY HUSBAND by Stephanie DeCarolis is an excellent debut that is sure to keep you hooked from beginning to end. Vince Taylor has got it all - an illustrious and profitable company that he has built from the ground up, a beautiful and loving wife whom he adores, and a wealthy lifestyle that most people could only dream of. But looks can be deceiving. When one of the interns at Vince's tech company is found murdered in Central Park, the cracks of Vince's life slowly start to open up and lies begin to bubble to the surface - because Vince's life is not such a fairytale after all. When the police discover that Vince was having an affair with Layla, they are determined to uncover the truth and they believe that Vince is at the heart of that, but Vince swears that he didn't kill her. Who would you believe? I thoroughly enjoyed this psychological thriller and didn't put it down until I discovered the truth. The characters aren't that likeable, especially Vince, but that didn't stop me from becoming gripped with the plotline and determined to understand what had happened to Layla that night. The pace of the novel is excellent and I loved the layout of the story, with short and snappy chapters from different character's points of view. There are plenty of twists and turns along the way which worked well and the author has a gift for building the tension and keeping readers on tenterhooks. All in all, I really enjoyed THE GUILTY HUSBAND by Stephanie DeCarolis and I look forward to the next book release! ABOUT THIS BOOK London. The year 2078. Like all other major cities, London is a silent wasteland, abandoned and crumbling, populated only by the renegade 'Offliner' movement, the lawless 'Seekers' and other minorities that rejected The Upload in 2060. As a result, these rebels live off the grid and in abject poverty, taking shelter in makeshift shantytowns and hideouts. The Offliners have made the disused Piccadilly Circus Tube station their home: a fully self-sufficient, subterranean community of about 500 people, known as the 'Cell'. In 2060, following a series of deadly pandemics, devastating environmental disasters and a violent surge in cyber terrorism, the UN made it compulsory for every tax paying citizen in all of its 193 united nations to login to the Perspecta Universe: a virtual reality universe provided by the tech giant Gnosys Inc. So began a period of history known as The Upload. Totally safe, pollution free, environmentally friendly: what was an alternative reality at first has become the only reality. Now, in 2078, billions of people all around the world exist in dedicated Hab-Belts - massive dormitory complexes surrounding the major cities - unconscious of the world around them: living, working, loving, learning, inside the Perspecta Universe. KID - A History of The Future follows Josh 'Kid' Jones, a young Offliner who discovers that an antiquated piece of technology called an 'iPhone', left to him by his father, seemingly allows him to communicate with the past through social media. He strikes up a friendship with Isabel Parry, a 16 year old in 2021, and the two begin communicating through time and space via Instagram. In doing so they are not only changing their own fate, but also the fate of the rest of the world. MY REVIEW WOW. Simply wow! Engaging characters, a compelling and addictive plotline, and a story that will make you stop and think about so many elements of life long after you turn the page, this is KID: A HISTORY OF THE FUTURE by Sebastian de Souza. In 2078, our world is not the one we know now. After multiple pandemics and climate disasters have destroyed the air, most people have stepped out of the real world and plugged into a virtual world called Perspecta, run by tech company Gnosys. But not everyone wants to abandon real life. Josh Jones, also known as Kid, is an Offliner, living in one of the Cells that exists in the London Underground, where his friends have become his family. Whenever they need to scavenge above ground, they take Roxi, which gives them a limited amount of time up top, but this is something else that is controlled by the tech company that wants to wipe the Offliners from the face of the planet. After all, if you aren't plugged in, you are less than human in their eyes. As the Cells are targeted, Josh is desperate to find a way to stop Gnosys and Hamilton Rogers, the man in charge of it all, but how can they take down the most powerful company in the world? When Josh finds an old iPhone, he stumbles into a conversation with Izzy and they become friends. But Izzy is special - not only is she intelligent and savvy, but she is also living and breathing in 2021. And maybe, just maybe, she can find a way to put a stop to Perspecta before it can begin ... KID: A HISTORY FOR THE FUTURE deals with every issue that is forefront in our minds these days and deals with them in such a relatable way that I genuinely think it will make me people stop and evaluate some of their choices, and come together to make a change. From our obsession with social media and being a 'somebody', to climate change and its devastating effects, to powerful and corrupt governments putting money before people, this story weaves it all elegantly throughout each chapter but it never feels forced or too heavy. The music references, descriptions of London, and the relationships that bloom in this book make this story all the richer. The characters are witty, likeable, and sharp, and while you may think this is a large book to sit down with, you will find yourself engrossed immediately and unwilling to put this book down. I have read dystopian fiction before but never like this - the future, our present, all come alive and I cannot wait to read more from Sebastian de Souza. MY REVIEW SUMMER AT SANDCASTLE COTTAGE by Christina Jones is a book that will make you smile and bring sunshine into your day, and we could all do with a little more of that in our lives. A story about the power and importance of friendship, SUMMER AT SANDCASTLE COTTAGE is everything you could want in a book and then a little bit more. ABOUT THIS BOOK Bath, 1852. As a girl, Nancy Bloom would go to Bath's Theatre Royal, sit on the hard wooden benches and stare in awe at the actresses playing men as much as the women dressed in finery. She longed to be a part of it all and when a man promised her parents he could find a role for Nancy in the theatre, they believed him. His lie and betrayal led to her ruin. Francis Carlyle is a theatre manager, an ambitious man always looking for the next big thing to take the country by storm. A self-made man, Francis has finally shed the skin of his painful past and is now rich, successful and in need of a new female star. Never in a million years did he think he'd find her standing on a table in one of Bath's bawdiest pubs. Nancy vowed never to trust a man again. Francis will do anything to make her his star. As they engage in a battle of wits and wills, can either survive with their hearts intact? MY REVIEW A compelling historical romance with depth and substance, TROUBLE FOR THE LEADING LADY by Rachel Brimble, is a story that will effortlessly work its way into your heart. Nancy Bloom always wanted to be a part of the exciting theatre world and when she thought she had gotten the perfect opportunity, she had thrown herself eagerly into the hands of a man who could not be trusted. Now a ruined woman, Nancy does what she must in order to survive, but she has never lost her spark for becoming a star. Francis Carlyle is looking for the next big thing to win over the elite, but he did not expect Nancy Bloom. But can two wounded people who have learned the hard way that you cannot trust anyone, find a way to believe in each other? And will they be able to let down their guards long enough to let love take a hold of their hearts? As always with Rachel Brimble's stories, the setting and historical detail in this novel is fantastic, and the time period really comes alive on the page. This is the second book in this series and I thoroughly enjoyed being immersed in the lives of the ordinary man and woman in Victorian times, while also recognising the harshness of the period which is elegantly woven throughout the character's lives. Nancy is a wonderful character whose grit and spirit shine through at every turn and Francis grew on me as I learned more about him as the pages continued. TROUBLE WITH THE LEADING LADY by Rachel Brimble is a wonderful historical romance and I look forward to more from this author. AUTHOR BIO Rachel lives with her husband and youngest daughter in a small town near Bath in the UK. Her first novel was published in 2007. Today she is the author of over 25 published contemporary and historical novels, including the Shop Girl series (Aria Fiction) and the Templeton Cove series (Harlequin). Rachel is a member of the Romantic Novelists Association and the Historical Novel Society. When she isn't writing, you'll find Rachel with her head in a book or walking the beautiful English countryside with her family. Her dream place to live is Bourton-on-the-Water in South West England.
