ABOUT THIS BOOK From the outside looking in, Lauren Delaney has a life to envy—a successful career, a solid marriage to a prominent surgeon and two beautiful daughters who are off to good colleges. But on her twenty-fourth wedding anniversary Lauren makes a decision that will change everything. Lauren won’t pretend things are perfect anymore. She defies the controlling husband who has privately mistreated her throughout their marriage and files for divorce. And as she starts her new life, she meets a kindred spirit—a man who is also struggling with the decision to end his unhappy marriage. But Lauren’s husband wants his “perfect” life back and his actions are shocking. Facing an uncertain future, Lauren discovers an inner strength she didn’t know she had as she fights for the love and happiness she deserves. MY REVIEW Engaging characters, a beautiful setting, and a whole lot of drama makes THE VIEW FROM ALAMEDA ISLAND by Robyn Carr a great read with plenty to keep your eyes glued to the page. After twenty-four years of abuse and controlling behaviour at the hands of her husband Brad, Lauren has finally had enough. Her two daughters are grown up and at college and she can be free. But Brad doesn't take kindly to being left and will do whatever he can to make life difficult for Lauren, destroying her in any way possible. When Lauren accidentally meets Beau, a gentle and kind man who is going through a similar situation with his ex-wife, she is cautious but happy to have a friendship and possibly more with a man who understands her and actually listens to her. But Lauren and Beau have no idea how difficult their baggage is going to get, with both their children and their exes struggling to accept the situation. And just how far will their ex-partners go to seek revenge? The characters are great (with the exception of a couple!) but I have to say that Beau and Cassie, one of Lauren's daughters, really stood out for me as extra special. Lauren doesn't see herself as strong but she is and this topic of abuse and controlling behaviour is excellently handled. THE VIEW FROM ALAMEDA ISLAND by Robyn Carr is a perfectly paced story of new beginnings and friendship and I highly recommend it to contemporary fiction fans everywhere. AUTHOR BIO Robyn Carr is a RITA® Award-winning, eleven-time #1 New York Times bestselling author of almost sixty novels, including the critically acclaimed Virgin River series. ABOUT THIS BOOK Jessica Wood is an aspiring photographer living in London. She’s had her heart broken, and her friends have pieced it back together again. But across the neon lights of Soho, in the smell of alcohol and cigarette smoke, on every night bus, in every song, every time she tries to forget: she remembers him. Now, in a battle between the past and the future, choosing between having a life and making a living, finding her feet or spreading her wings, Jessica must ask herself: who is she really living for? MY REVIEW Unusual, full of depth, and with plenty of moments that will get you thinking, LOVE AND OTHER THINGS TO LIVE FOR by Louise Leverett is a unique story that will capture your heart and imagination. Three months after moving in with Charlie, the man that she loves, Jess finds herself single and back living with her friend Amber in their little flat in London. Heartbroken and completely unsure about what she wants from life and love, Jess throws herself into finding out the answers with some unexpected developments along the way. As Jess starts to figure out herself and her feelings, her best friends are there beside her every step of the way, and they have their own stuff to deal with too. But can Jess move on from Charlie and be happy in her life? Slow to start, LOVE AND OTHER THINGS TO LIVE FOR by Louise Leverett develops the background of Jess and her friendships really well and I enjoyed getting to know all of these characters personalities and lives. Jess wants to be a photographer which isn't easy, she wants to forget about Charlie which is even harder, and she wants to be happy, whatever that means to her, and in this way this story is almost like a guide for modern women who are trying to figure out their futures in a world which bombards us with telling us what we should have, what we should want. There are moments of sadness, self-realisation, and friendship in its truest and most brilliant form, and I thoroughly enjoyed reading LOVE AND OTHER THINGS TO LIVE FOR by Louise Leverett. - a literary fiction novel with something for everyone to connect with and I highly recommend it. AUTHOR BIO Louise Leverett graduated from Mountview Academy of Theatre Arts in London on a full scholarship before moving on to study at the Lee Strasberg Institute of Film in New York. Since establishing her own business ‘Rock the Tribes’ she is now working on a collection of writings that will eventually be turned into adaptations for screen. ABOUT THIS BOOK All Anna wants is to be able to sleep. But crushing insomnia, terrifying night terrors and memories of that terrible night are making it impossible. If only she didn’t feel so guilty… To escape her past, Anna takes a job at a hotel on the remote Scottish island of Rum, but when seven guests join her, what started as a retreat from the world turns into a deadly nightmare. Each of the guests have a secret but one of them is lying – about who they are and why they’re on the island. There’s a murderer staying in the Bay View hotel. And they’ve set their sights on Anna. Seven strangers. Seven secrets. One deadly lie. Someone’s going to sleep and never wake up… MY REVIEW Absolutely amazing. SLEEP by C.L. Taylor is absolutely amazing in every possible way and I couldn't wait to get to the final page so I could find out all of the answers (and what a final page!). When a tragic accident changes Anna and her colleague's lives, Anna struggles to deal with her feelings of guilt and sadness. Even when she is cleared of all wrongdoing, Anna shrinks into herself as she tries to heal but when she begins to get mysterious and creepy messages about going to sleep forever, she decides that a drastic change is needed. Moving to a remote Scottish island to work at the only hotel there, gives Anna a chance for a fresh start and the wild beauty of the landscape gives her some much-needed space and peace. But when the first group of guests arrives, a storm soon rolls in and not everyone is who they say they are. When the messages begin again will Anna be able to uncover the truth before it is too late? The setting is fantastic in this story as the isolation and eery quality of the hotel adds the perfect atmosphere to the story - it also helped that I was reading this book in the middle of a storm so my nerves were already tingling! The characters were all intriguing in their own way and I enjoyed trying to figure out who they were beneath their carefully created facades. The pace works very well and there was never a dull moment from beginning to end. While I definitely was thrown off the scent a few times throughout, I had figured out the truth by the last few chapters but the ending still took me by surprise. Compelling, haunting, and spine-tingling in all of the right places, SLEEP by C.L. ABOUT THIS BOOK Meet Rachel, the beautiful bride with BIG plans for the perfect day! The venue is a castle and the dress is designer. It’s just a shame her husband is a rat. Maddie and Sally have only one thing in common – they both love the same man! Beth is a newly single mum with a mystery baby daddy. Surely the father isn’t someone the girls all know? And then there’s Jane, the glue holding them all together, but being dumped doesn’t make her the happiest bridesmaid…especially with gorgeous flatmate Freddie complicating things. Will the bride say, ‘I Do!’? Or will her bridesmaids save the day…and find love along the way? MY REVIEW Laugh-out-loud, heartfelt, and warm are just some of the words that I would use to describe BRIDESMAIDS by Zara Stoneley and it is a must-read for humour and contemporary romance fans everywhere. Jane got jilted by her fiancé on her hen night so it is no wonder that she isn't a big fan of love and marriage. But when her best friend Rachel announces that she is getting hitched and she wants Jane to be her bridesmaid, Jane pastes on a smile and tries to throw herself into the whole event. But Jane has her reasons for wanting to protect Rachel from getting hurt, especially since she knows the soon-to-be groom is hiding something from Rachel. Add in two other bridesmaids who love the same man and another bridesmaid who has a secret baby-daddy that nobody knows anything about, and the sparks are sure to fly. And then there is Jane's other best friend, Freddie, who has always been there for her and who is beginning to feature in her dreams in an altogether different way ... I laughed so much while reading BRIDESMAIDS that I got jaw ache and the characters just felt so much like friends by the end that I didn't really want it to end. There are plenty of heartwarming and emotional moments as well as funny ones, and the book just felt like a big hug from start to finish. There were times when Jane was a little naive but after what has happened to her it was understandable. The friendships are all different and relatable, and there wasn't a dull moment. BRIDESMAIDS by Zara Stoneley is a wonderful story of friendship and love and I highly recommend it! AUTHOR BIO Zara Stoneley is the USA Today bestselling author of The Wedding Date. Born in a small village in the UK, she wanted to be a female James Herriot, a spy, or an author when she grew up. After many (many) years, and many different jobs, her dream of writing a bestseller came true. She writes about friendship, dreams, love, and happy ever afters, and hopes that her tales make you laugh a lot, cry a little, and occasionally say 'ahhh'. Zara now lives in a Cheshire village with her family, a lively cockapoo called Harry, and a very bossy (and slightly evil) cat called Saffron. Zara’s bestselling novels include 'The Wedding Date', 'The Holiday Swap', 'Summer with the Country Village Vet', 'Blackberry Picking at Jasmine Cottage' and the popular Tippermere series - 'Stable Mates', 'Country Affairs' and 'Country Rivals'. ABOUT THIS BOOK After facing the same health scare that took her mother, adult film star Vera Eastman sets out on a road trip to finish her mom’s bucket list. First stop, the hometown she escaped the moment she graduated. Her defiant arrival puts her face-to-face with her first love—her first everything—Jack Reeves. Jack’s still the guy who can steal her heart with a smile, but he hasn’t forgiven her for leaving, and avoiding him proves difficult. Not only is he her grandma’s neighbor, but Grandma pays Jack to mow the lawn shirtless, and his firefighter job has him frequently rescuing Vera, as her ability to find trouble—was it her fault the ladder on the water tower broke?—becomes as formidable a matchmaker as her grandma. Small-town-itis must be contagious. That’s the only explanation for Grandma’s stupid cat being in love with Jack’s damn dog, for Vera’s sudden urge to move home, and for her falling for Jack all over again. Eating chocolate body paint out of the jar can’t even help her with this mess. MY REVIEW I wasn't sure what to expect when I picked up FIRE TRUCKS, GARTER BELTS, & MY PERFECT EX by Heather Novak but I am so glad I did because inside the cover of this book is a wonderful story about friendship, family (the ones that you choose as well as the ones that you're born with), and finding exactly where you're supposed to be. Vera left her hometown in a haze of anger and rebellion all those years ago and she has made a name and a business for herself, alongside her two closest friends, in the adult entertainment industry. She is making a difference as well as a fortune and she hasn't really looked back since. But when a health scare makes her stop and think, Vera decides to tick off a few things off her mother's bucket list which she carries with her, and that means going back home for a little while. Vera hoped to dash in and out and avoid everyone from her past as much as possible but we all know that small towns never work like that. Within hours Vera has annoyed one half of the community by merely existing while the other half have welcomed her home with open arms, including her Grandmother whom Vera believed was dead (I know! You will just have to read it for yourself). And then there is Jack, the one man who truly held her heart and made her blood hum. But could there be anything between them when she is destined to leave him behind again? Hilarious, heartwarming, and heartbreaking at times, FIRE TRUCKS, GARTER BELTS, & MY PERFECT EX by Heather Novak takes a generally taboo occupation and turns it on its head which works very well and there is never a dull moment in this story from start to finish. The characters are all well-developed and I enjoyed them all but I definitely have such a soft spot for Grandma Bea and her crew! Vera is strong, sassy, and really likeable and I admired her so much as the story developed and I got to know her more and more. Now be warned that this book is STEAMY with capital letters and is not for the faint-hearted and is sure to get you hot under the collar when you turn the page. But it is also warm and sweet in so many ways too which makes the sizzle all the better. With plenty of drama, misunderstandings, funny escapades, and moments of true friendship, FIRE TRUCKS, GARTER BELTS, & MY PERFECT EX by Heather Novak is sure to tick all of the boxes for romance fans who like it hot and I look forward to reading more from this talented author. AUTHOR BIO Bold, Breathtaking, Badass Romance. ABOUT THIS BOOK Death is stalking the southern South Island of New Zealand... Marginalised by previous antics, Sam Shephard, is on the bottom rung of detective training in Dunedin, and her boss makes sure she knows it. She gets involved in her first homicide investigation, when a university student is murdered in the Botanic Gardens, and Sam soon discovers this is not an isolated incident. There is a chilling prospect of a predator loose in Dunedin, and a very strong possibility that the deaths are linked to a visiting circus...Determined to find out who's running the show, and to prove herself, Sam throws herself into an investigation that can have only one ending... MY REVIEW You know that feeling when your heart starts to pump faster, the hairs on the back of your neck begin to tickle, and your mind goes into overdrive trying to figure out what is happening? Well, that's the permanent state I was in as I devoured every word of THE RINGMASTER by Vanda Symon who has fast become one of my favourite writers. Sam Shephard is happy that she has moved to the bigger city of Dunedin but her life as a Detective Constable is not exactly easy when her boss despises her. But she has her best friend Maggie with her and is staying in the lap of luxury with Maggie's Aunt and Uncle. When the body of a young female student is found, Sam and the rest of the team get searching for the killer - well Sam does as much as her bully of a boss will let her - and when a connection appears between the murder and a local travelling circus, this investigation takes an even more terrifying turn as it appears they have a serial killer on the loose. With obstacles around every turn, can Sam figure out the truth before the murderer strikes again? This book drew me in and blew my mind! I loved the character of Sam Shephard from the first book in this series (Overkill - review link here www.booksofallkinds.weebly.com) and this book just proved that she is one of my favourite detectives in fiction ever! Strong, intelligent, tough but also compassionate, relatable and willing to look at things from all angles, are just some of the ways that I would describe Sam and I knew that as soon as I picked up this book that I wouldn't put it down until the very end (and what an ending!). The angle of the travelling circus added a fresh and unique aspect to the story and Cassie! Oh, Cassie! But you will see what I mean when you read it for yourselves. The pace is perfect with just the right amount of tension, drama, and energy scattered throughout to keep me hooked and there was never a dull moment from start to finish. THE RINGMASTER by Vanda Symon is perfect in every way and I cannot wait for more from Sam Shephard. AUTHOR BIO Vanda Symon is a crime writer and broadcaster from Dunedin, New Zealand. Books in her Sam Shephard series have hit number one on the New Zealand bestseller list. and she has been a three-time finalist for the Ngaio Marsh Award for Best Crime Novel. ABOUT THIS BOOK One charming bookshop, two unlikely friends, and a summer in Paris that will change their lives forever… Grace can’t believe it when her husband of twenty-five years announces he doesn’t want to join her on their anniversary trip to Paris – instead, he wants a divorce. Reeling from the shock, Grace makes the bold decision to go on this holiday of a lifetime alone. Audrey leaves behind heartache of her own when she arrives in Paris. A job in a bookshop is her ticket to freedom, but with no knowledge of the French language, her summer adventure seems doomed to fail. Until she meets Grace, and everything changes… Living in neighbouring apartments above the bookshop, Grace and Audrey form an unlikely friendship. They came to Paris to find themselves, but finding each other might be the best thing that's ever happened to them. MY REVIEW ONE SUMMER IN PARIS by Sarah Morgan is a breathtakingly wonderful story about finding yourself and the meaning of true friendship, and it is easily my favourite book by this author so far. Grace knows what it is like to grow up in chaos so as an adult, happily married to her best friend David, and her daughter Sophie about to go travelling and move to University, Grace has done everything to give those she loves a perfect, ordered, loving life. And on her twenty-fifth wedding anniversary, she has the perfect surprise for her husband - a month-long trip to Paris so they can spend some quality time together and get used to the idea of being empty-nesters. But David has a surprise for Grace too. He has been having an affair with a younger woman and he wants a divorce. Devastated, Grace doesn't know how she will ever get over this but on the advice of her unique and wonderful grandmother, Mimi, she decides to go to Paris alone and try to figure out her future. What Grace doesn't know is that there is a young girl also alone in Paris who is trying to forge a new life for herself while always worrying about the problems that she has left behind in London. As their paths converge, an unexpected friendship is forged which will help them both heal from their wounds and become stronger than ever. And together they may just learn to trust again. Engaging from the very beginning, I love the way that each chapter is told from a specific character's point of view. Both Grace and Audrey are simply amazing characters, full of strength and courage to find happiness and deal with their similar pasts. The setting is breathtaking and I found myself transported to the stunning French capital effortlessly every time I turned the page. There are drama, lies, new beginnings, and many learning curves for both of these fabulous women, and sensitive topics such as alcoholism are excellently portrayed. And as for Mimi and her mysterious past in France, I absolutely loved how it all came together in the end! Compelling, heartwarming, and utterly addictive, ONE SUMMER IN PARIS by Sarah Morgan is one of the best books that I have read this year and is everything you want in a great novel. A must-read for everyone! AUTHOR BIO USA Today bestselling author Sarah Morgan writes commercial women's fiction and her trademark humour and warmth have gained her fans across the globe. ABOUT THIS BOOK Two women. One deadly secret. A rivalry that could destroy them. Ava Wells is perfect. She has the boyfriend, the career, the looks. But one night changes everything and her life suddenly isn't so seamless. Jade Fernleigh is ambitious. She's worked hard to get where she is. And she's not about to let Ava take the job she rightly deserves. Both women share a secret that could destroy them, but who will crumble first? MY REVIEW THE LIARS by Naomi Joy is a rollercoaster of secrets, lies, and power and it kept me hooked from beginning to end. Ava, Jade, and Olivia used to be friends as well as workmates but that all changed the night that Olivia died. Now they can barely stand each other at the office even though they are on the same team, and the tension only gets worse as they compete for the same promotion. But Jade believes that Ava is playing it dirty to get the job and will do whatever it takes to bring Ava down, while Ava has her own problems dealing with her abusive ex-boyfriend and the untenable position that she has found herself in with her boss. But as the lies from the past begin to come back to haunt them, who will survive as everything takes a more sinister turn? Dark, twisted, and very uncomfortable at times, THE LIARS by Naomi Joy struck all of the right chords for me as I was drawn into Ava and Jade's relationship. While neither character jumped out as likeable, I was invested in finding out just what their shared secret about Olivia's death really was, but nothing prepared me for the truth which was really just the beginning of this dark tale of control and obsession. Compelling at every turn, THE LIARS is a cracking debut and I look forward to more from Naomi Joy. AUTHOR BIO Naomi Joy is a pen name of a young PR professional who was formerly an account director at prestigious Storm Communications. Writing from experience, she draws the reader in to the darker side of the uptown and glamorous, presenting realism that is life or death, unreliable and thrilling to page-turn.
