ABOUT THE BOOK England, 1813. Nineteen-year-old Catherine Bennet lives in the shadow of her two eldest sisters, Elizabeth and Jane, who have both made excellent marriages. No one expects Kitty to amount to anything. Left at home in rural Hertfordshire with her neurotic and nagging mother, and a father who derides her as "silly and ignorant," Kitty is lonely, diffident and at a loss as to how to improve her situation. When her world unexpectedly expands to London and the Darcy’s magnificent country estate in Derbyshire, she is overjoyed. Keen to impress this new society, and to change her family’s prejudice, Kitty does everything she can to improve her mind and manners—and for the first time feels liked and respected. However, one fateful night at Pemberley, a series of events and misunderstandings conspire to ruin Kitty’s reputation and she is sent back home in disgrace. But Kitty has learnt from her new experiences and what she does next does next will not only surprise herself, but everyone else too. MY REVIEW I'm a HUGE Jane Austen fan so when I heard that there was a new novel continuing the Pride & Prejudice story by following Kitty's life, I was very excited but also a little cautious because I'm always worried that it will fall short of the excellence of a classic. But I'm happy to report that WHAT KITTY DID NEXT by Carrie Kablean exceeded my expectations and made me fall in love all over again. Kitty Bennet is a little lost in her life. With her three sisters married and living away, she feels lonely and unsure of who she really is and what she really wants in her life. Having always been Lydia's shadow she is still being blamed for Lydia's hasty actions which almost ruined the family, but Kitty isn't Lydia and yearns for more from her family and for her future. And when she finds herself accompanying Jane and her husband to stay in London. suddenly a whole new world of possibilities opens up in front of her eyes as she tries to find her place in this new world. But when one night changes it all, will Kitty ever get the opportunity to show everyone exactly who she is and what she is made of? From London to Pemberley, WHAT KITTY DID NEXT by Carrie Kablean really brings the world of Austen alive again and I eagerly delved into the sights, smells, and homes of the time period. I loved the characters, the flow of the story, and I devoured this book in one sitting. WHAT KITTY DID NEXT by Carrie Kablean is the perfect story for Jane Austen fans and all historical fiction fans alike, and I highly recommend it. AUTHOR BIO I was born and raised in London, and came to Sydney in 1990. I love both cities - shame they are so far apart. I have always loved reading and when I was a kid and the mobile library made its weekly stop nearby I read anything in the historical fiction genre I could get my hands on. Especially loved Tudor England. Then Jane Austen came into my life, and never left. And I started working my way through other great English classic novels (an ongoing pastime). But my tastes range farther afield too, Junot Diaz, Stella Gibbons, Tom Wolfe, Graham Greene, Karen Joy Fowler, Alice Sebold.... have to stop, it will go on forever. Theatre is also a passion. I reviewed for The Sunday Telegraph for more than a decade, and still post the occasional review. I was a journalist with The Australian for more than 20 years, and now write for my own amusement - and hopefully yours! ABOUT THE BOOK A humorous romp about the misperceptions and rivalry between two sisters. Michelle Vernal’s debut novel transports the reader to the stunning New Zealand seaside village of Akaroa. Nobody’s Perfect Are They? Rebecca Loughton’s bumbled her way through her thirty-something years making a few cock-ups along the way. Of course, these wouldn’t be so obvious if it wasn’t for her golden haired, older sister Jennifer. In a bid to escape Jennifer’s lengthy shadow and to find her happy ever after Rebecca, high-tails it out of her hometown of Christchurch to the other side of the world landing a legal secretary job in the buzzing city of Dublin. A few drinks later, all she has to show for her new life is an embarrassing one-night stand and a dollop of flirtatious banter with her boss Ciaran, who just happens to have a predatory receptionist in hot pursuit of him. Amidst plans of preventing such a merger, Rebecca receives news that Jennifer’s picture perfect life has a big, fat crack down the middle of it in the form of a philandering husband. Summoned home to look after her sister’s children and cooking school while she works on her marriage, Rebecca finds the reality of looking after two young children along with the bizarre array of guests booked into the cooking school grim. The only bright spot on her horizon are Ciaran’s e-mails but then she meets David Seagar whom she thinks might just be the ending to her happy ever after but will he prove to be far from perfect too? MY REVIEW A light-hearted, easy read, SISTERLY LOVE by Michelle Vernal will especially appeal to siblings who have that little edge of rivalry between them with plenty of laughs along the way. Rebecca has always known that compared to her perfect sister Jennifer, her life is pretty much a mess. Escaping to the other side of the world Rebecca has a decent job, good friends, and a huge crush on her boss but never feels fully satisfied with her life. When Jennifer rings her in desperate need of her help, Rebecca knows that she will do it even though it means moving back to New Zealand. But it isn't long before Rebecca realises that nobody's life is perfect and everyone has cracks in their story, and as Rebecca starts to take chances will she find her own happiness when she least expects it? SISTERLY LOVE by Michelle Vernal is a nice story with plenty of drama and misunderstandings throughout. While I wasn't always connected to Rebecca I still enjoyed her story and found this book to be an undemanding read to while away an afternoon. AUTHOR BIO Michelle Vernal is an author with Harper Impulse who loves a happy ending. She lives with her husband and their two boys in Christchurch, New Zealand. It’s a city that is slowly rebuilding its happy ending. She’s partial to a glass of wine, loves a cheese scone and has recently taken up yoga—a sight to behold indeed. Her books are written with humour and warmth and she hopes you enjoy reading them. ABOUT THE BOOK A bold, sharp, gripping debut about a couple whose perfect life in the Swedish countryside is not what it seems… In an idyllic house in a Swedish wood, Merry and her husband are building their new dream life with their young baby, far away from events that overshadowed their old life in New York. And they’re happy, aren’t they? Blissfully, blissfully happy. When Merry’s childhood friend Frances comes to stay, Frances barely recognises her old friend Merry, pureeing baby food, baking, living the Swedish dream. But little by little, cracks begin to show in her carefully constructed fairy tale. And Frances starts to see things others might miss. Dark and treacherous things. And then a terrible tragedy unfolds… MY REVIEW I just ... this is ... what the hell ... oh my god! After turning the final page on this novel my thoughts are jumbled, horrified, and absolutely shocked because YOU WERE MADE FOR THIS by Michelle Sacks is unlike anything I have read in a very long time. In a stunning Swedish forest lives the perfect family. Having escaped the rat race of New York, Merry, Sam and their beautiful little baby boy have everything they ever wanted and time to experience what really matters and make memories together. They are officially living the dream. Or are they? For underneath the facade lives lies, secrecy, and abuse and when Merry's childhood friend Frank, who knows her better than anyone, arrives for a visit, their perfect life is set to come tumbling down around them with horrific consequences. This book is haunting, upsetting, and completely disturbing but it is also compelling and hypnotic in a way that will have you sitting up all night to discover what really happens. Merry, Sam, and Frank are all unlikeable characters and all disturbed and disturbing in their own right but they suck you in and open up their world to you, and you will never be the same again. This is not an easy thriller to read but a dark and twisted psychological tale of abuse, control. and haunting secrets and I completely understand why the marketing team for this story is using the hashtag #ReadThis because to really understand the depths of this story, you simply must read this book. An unbelievable and harrowing debut novel from this very talented author. AUTHOR BIO Michelle Sacks was born in Cape Town, South Africa. She holds an MA in Literature and Film from the University of Cape Town, and was shortlisted twice for the HSBC/SA PEN Literary award. In 2014, her story All Them Savageswas shortlisted for the Commonwealth Short Story Prize. Her debut collection Stone Baby: Stories was published in 2017, and her first novel You Were Made For This is due out in June 2018. She currently lives in Switzerland. ABOUT THE BOOK A tender yet tantalizing novel about two friends, the summer night they fell apart, and the scavenger hunt that reunites them decades later—until the clues expose a breathtaking secret that just might shatter them once and for all. Laura and Casey were once inseparable: as they floated on their backs in the sunlit lake, as they dreamed about the future under starry skies, and as they teamed up for the wild scavenger hunts in their small California lakeside town. Until one summer night, when a shocking betrayal sent Laura running through the pines, down the dock, and into a new life, leaving Casey and a first love in her wake. But the past is impossible to escape, and now, after seventeen years away, Laura is pulled home and into a reunion with Casey she can’t resist—one last scavenger hunt. With a twist: this time, the list of clues leads to the settings of their most cherished summer memories. From glistening Jade Cove to the vintage skating rink, each step they take becomes a bittersweet reminder of the friendship they once shared. But just as the game brings Laura and Casey back together, the clues unravel a stunning secret that threatens to tear them apart… Mesmerizing and unforgettable, Amy Mason Doan’s The Summer List is about losing and recapturing the person who understands you best—and the unbreakable bonds of girlhood. MY REVIEW A wonderful debut, THE SUMMER LIST by Amy Mason Doan is a mix of friendship, tragedy, and secrets with an air of nostalgia and youth blending it all together into a compelling narrative that will hold your attention from the very beginning. Laura and Casey were best friends, as close as sisters when they were growing up. Until one night everything changed. Now, years later, Laura receives an invitation to return to her childhood home for a scavenger hunt and to Casey, but does she want to go back there where old wounds have never really healed? As Laura and Casey begin to open up again and the hunt takes them to places brimming with memories, can the secrets from the past finally surface and heal a friendship that could save them both? Beautifully descriptive, THE SUMMER LIST by Amy Mason Doan will transport you to a setting of such beauty that it will take your breath away. The characters are engaging and mysterious at times, and as the plot moved on, I cared more and more about them. The story is well-paced and I easily read it one sitting. All in all, this is a cracking debut and I look forward to more from this new author. AUTHOR BIO Amy lives in Portland, Oregon with her husband, daughter, and rescue tabby. She grew up in California, but as a girl she visited the Oregon Shakespeare Fest with her grandparents every year, and she now considers both states home. As a writer for publications including The Oregonian, San Francisco Chronicle, Wired and Forbes, Amy has interviewed everyone from beer-brewing monks to nanotechnologists. Amy has an M.A. in journalism from Stanford University and a B.A. in English from U.C. Berkeley. THE SUMMER LIST is her first novel, and draws on her beloved summers in lakeside Pinecrest, California. A second novel, set in coastal California and Oregon, will be published in 2019. ABOUT THIS BOOK Two people. One love story. A million possibilities. They're soulmates. Ivy and Abe were inseparable as children until an accident tore them apart. Several decades later, when both are in their seventies, a chance encounter reunites them. But time is not on their side. What if they'd met in a different time and place? In another life, Ivy and Abe meet in their forties, when both are married already. Unable to resist the attraction between them, they embark on a passionate affair. In yet another, they marry young, with a bright future ahead of them - only for a dark shadow to threaten their happiness. Throughout various incarnations of their lives, they come together and go their separate ways, fall in and out of love, make or break promises. In every universe, Ivy and Abe are meant to meet. But are they meant to be? MY REVIEW Beautiful. Powerful. Stunning. Superb. These are all words that I would use to describe IVY & ABE by Elizabeth Enfield and I still don't feel that they do this story justice. Ivy and Abe's story moved me in ways that I have never been moved before and showed the power of love and timing to perfection. This is the story of one love story: Ivy and Abe. Their love is that magical kind of love, that once in a lifetime kind of love that takes your breath away when you read it. But what would happen if Ivy and Abe met at different times of their lives when they are different people in different circumstances - would their deep connection be enough to overcome wrong timing and obstacles that would block their path in these alternate realities? Can love overcome everything? IVY & ABE by Elizabeth Enfield makes you look at love and life in a new way and I could not put it down. I fell in love with Ivy and Abe myself and invested so much in them as a couple that I laughed and cried alongside each of their possible love stories. The writing in this book is simply stunning and the ebbs and flows of life, loss, and heartbreak are portrayed expertly and in such a way that it really hits home to the reader. There are drama and adventure, grief and desperation, hope and inspiration throughout this magnificent story and at the centre of it all will always be Ivy and Abe, just the way it should be. IVY & ABE by Elizabeth is destined to become a huge success and in my opinion, would make a perfect fit for the silver screen. So waste no time and buy your copy now! AUTHOR BIO Elizabeth Enfield is a journalist and regular contributor to national newspapers, magazines and radio, has written four novels and had short stories broadcast on Radio Four and published in various magazines. She also teaches at various universities and on the Creative Writing Programme in Brighton. ABOUT THE BOOK By the end of the weekend, everything will have changed. But for better or for worse? After twenty-six years of marriage Lily and Charlie separate. Lily moving on with her new fiancé Joe, and Charlie, with his new, younger, girlfriend Chloe. Even Lily and Charlie's grown-up children Polly and Thomas have come to terms with their parent's new lives. But when Lily's mother dies, Lily and Charlie decide to get the family together for one last weekend in the old family summer home - a weekend that just happens to be their thirtieth wedding anniversary. As the whole family gathers with their respective partners, home truths come out and secrets are divulged. By the end of the weekend, everything will have changed -- but for better or for worse? MY REVIEW THE ANNIVERSARY by Roisin Meaney is an addictive read with engaging, flawed characters and a unique writing flair that pulls you into the plot from the very beginning and keeps you entranced to the very end. As Lily drives up to Land's End for what could very well be the final time, she cannot help but ponder on the way her life has drastically changed. No longer married to Charlie, whom she had spent over twenty years with and had two children with, engaged to kind and reliable Joe, and the absence of her beloved mother, combine to make this an emotional weekend. Lily worries about her daughter Poll who cannot seem to commit herself to any relationship she enters and her quiet, unfocused son Thomas who keeps so much to himself, but she hopes that Land End's, the home she grew up in, will work some of its magic on them all and prepare them for a new future. But Lily has no idea just how much this weekend will change their lives as secrets are revealed, insecurities and the reasons behind them are realised, and the beauty of the sea and Land's End opens their eyes to the truth. THE ANNIVERSARY by Roisin Meaney is a story to be savoured and I really enjoyed it thoroughly from beginning to end. While I liked Lily and tolerated Charlie, it was the characters of Poll and Thomas who I connected the most with. I cared about them and wanted them to find their path to happiness. Chloe is a complicated character, not innately likeable, obnoxious at times, but a part of me felt sorry for her at times too, and sad for what she feels she must do. As always Roisin Meaney's writing is topical, dealing with abortion, divorce, cheating, bullying, crime, and self-belief throughout, adding a depth to this story which makes it so much more than just another good book. THE ANNIVERSARY by Roisin Meaney is a captivating read with drama, love, loss, and hope, and I could not put it down. So take my advice and buy it as soon as possible! AUTHOR BIO A published author of fourteen books for adults and two for children, Roisin has also written numerous articles for journals and newspapers. She worked as an advertising copywriter for a number of years, and brings a vast amount of experience to the editing team. Her first novel, The Daisy Picker, won a Write a Bestseller competition. Her third novel, The Last Week of May reached number one on the Irish bestseller list and her fourth, The People Next Door reached number two. Her books have been translated into several languages, and two, Semi-Sweet and Life Drawing for Beginners, have been published in the US. She is currently working on her next book, which is destined for publication in early summer 2018. She is also plotting another children's book - shhhhh. ABOUT THE BOOK Ruth’s tribe are her lively children and her filmmaker husband, Simon, who has Motor Neurone Disease and can only communicate with his eyes. Ruth’s other ‘tribe’ are the friends who gather at the cove in Greystones, Co. Wicklow, and regularly throw themselves into the freezing cold water, just for kicks. ‘The Tragic Wives’ Swimming Club’, as they jokingly call themselves, meet to cope with the extreme challenges life puts in their way, not to mention the monster waves rolling over the horizon. Swimming is just one of the daily coping strategies as Ruth fights to preserve the strong but now silent connection with her husband. As she tells the story of their marriage, via diagnosis to their current precarious situation, Ruth also charts her passion for sea swimming – culminating in a midnight swim under the full moon on her wedding anniversary. An invocation to all of us to love as hard as we can, and live even harder, I Found My Tribe is an urgent and uplifting letter to a husband, family, friends, the natural world and the brightness of life. MY REVIEW Usually, when I read an emotional and heartbreaking story, I turn the last page, recognise how good the book was and let the emotions go because after all, it is fiction, not real life. But with this haunting story, forgetting about what I read simply wasn't possible as not only is I FOUND MY TRIBE a true story but it is so honest, so raw, and so powerful in its narrative that one cannot simply turn the cover and forget. Ruth loves her hectic family life but when her husband is diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease it changes their lives forever. As her home is invaded by nurses, carers, and medical equipment, Ruth needs them desperately while resenting their presence and struggles to find some semblance of normality. The sea has always called to her and when she becomes one of the 'The Tragic Wives' Swimming Club', Ruth finds another family, outside of her own, which will help her try to cope with what was happening. Ruth details the devastation of this horrific disease, the depth of despair that she and her family live with, and the absolute necessity to find something, anything, that helps you to breathe through it all, in her case swimming in the sea. Ruth is strong even when she is broken, inspiring through it all, and has inner depths of courage which will take your breath away. The power of nature to soothe and help you cope is excellently portrayed, as is the importance of friendship and family, but the main message I took from this book is love. Love hard, love deeply, and love every minute of every day for none of us know what tomorrow will bring. I FOUND MY TRIBE by Ruth Fitzmaurice is a book that personifies the strength of the human spirit and embodies love on every page, and is a book that everyone should read. AUTHOR BIO Ruth Fitzmaurice was born in 1976 and grew up in Co. Louth, Ireland. She was a radio researcher and producer when she married film director and writer, Simon, in 2004 and had three children. In 2008, Simon was diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease and given three years to live. Simon went into respiratory failure in 2010 and was accidentally placed on a ventilator during an emergency procedure. He decided, against medical advice, to keep the ventilator; Ruth and Simon went on to have twins in 2012. In January 2016, Ruth wrote her first piece for the Irish Times about family life and a new passion, sea swimming. She lives in Greystones, Co. Wicklow, with her five children Jack, Raife, Arden, Sadie, Hunter, a dog and a cat. Simon passed away in October 2017. ABOUT THE BOOK WW2 has been declared. A strange find on the beach gives Mary Rosie the chance to fulfil her dreams and contribute to her country, but all is not what she imagined. After witnessing the first bomb to be dropped on mainland Britain, Mary watches her friends leave to join the forces and longs to be with them, but is held back by loyalty to her widowed mother. France has capitulated. Johnny Allan’s regiment has been annihilated by German troops. Johnny has to evade capture and somehow get home to the girl who no longer waits for him. Liesel is a German Jew who lost her family to the Nazis and has to make her way in Britain, a strange new country, while harbouring a desire for revenge. Their lives become entangled in a way that no one could have envisaged. A story about war, family ties, love, loyalty and loss. MY REVIEW MARY ROSIE'S WAR by Catherine M. Byrne is an emotional story of love, loss, and the ties that bind you to family. World War II has begun and as Mary Rosie watches everyone around become embroiled in action and play their part, she yearns to do her bit and be involved. But her mother needs her, has always needed her, and she feels torn between what she wants and loyalty to those who need her. But when she stumbles across something unexpected, it will turn her onto an unexpected path, while in France Johnny Allan tries to escape his enemies and return home, and a stranger arrives at her new home in Britain determined to seek justice for those she has lost. This story follows Mary Rosie, Johnny and Liesel as their lives become tangled up in unexpected ways, the plot never gets too slow and remains interesting from beginning to end. The characters are fascinating and overall I found MARY ROSIE'S WAR by Catherine M. Byrne to be a steady, solid read. AUTHOR BIO Catherine Byrne always wanted to be a writer. She began at the age of eight by drawing comic strips with added dialogue and later, as a teenager, graduated to poetry. Her professional life however, took a very different path. She first studied glass engraving with Caithness Glass where she worked for fourteen years. During that time she also worked as a foster parent. After the birth of her youngest child she changed direction, studying and becoming a chiropodist with her own private practice. At the same time she did all the administration work for her husband's two businesses, and this continued until the death of her husband in 2005. However she still maintained her love of writing, and has had several short stories published in women's magazines. Her main ambition was to write novels and she has now retired in order to write full time. Born and brought up until the age of nine on the Island of Stroma, she heard many stories from her grandparents about the island life of a different generation. Her family moved to the mainland at a time when the island was being depopulated, although it took another ten years before the last family left. An interest in geology, history and her strong ties to island life have influenced her choice of genre for her novels. Since first attending the AGM of the Scottish Association of Writers in 1999, Catherine has won several prizes, commendations and has been short-listed both for short stories and chapters of her novels. In 2009, she won second prize in the general novel category for ‘Follow The Dove’ In 2016 The Road to Nowhere won second prize in the Barbara Hammond competition for Best Self Published novel. The follow up, Isa’s Daughter won 1st prize in the same competition the following year. Although the books follow the fortunes of the same family, they are all stand-alone. The fifth book in the Raumsey series is Mary Rosie’s War. Catherine Byrne lives in Wick, Caithness.
