ABOUT THE BOOK In a city of millions, it’s easy to lose someone… Twelve weeks before Leah Eady arrived in France, her husband disappeared. Early one morning, he walked out the door and never came back. All he left behind was a scrumpled note in a cereal box, leading her to the bustling streets of Paris. Once she arrives, she discovers a mysterious unfinished manuscript written by her husband, and set in the very same city. Hoping to uncover more clues, Leah takes over a crumbling bookshop with her two young daughters, only to realise that he might just be closer than any of them ever imagined… …but what if he doesn’t want to be found? MY REVIEW Leah's relationship with her husband was never a conventional one but nothing about them was conventional - from the moment they met to the breaks away that Robert took regularly to help him with his writing. But as time passed and their children began to grow up, Leah felt like she was losing the man she had chosen to share her life and loves with, and then one day he simply disappears. From a code in a cereal box, tickets to Paris (a place that represents so much to them), to a half-finished manuscript, Leah and her daughters plunge themselves into a new life half in hopes of finding Robert and the rest of the time needing something new to grasp onto. But nothing could prepare them for the ups and downs, secrets, and truths that will be revealed along the way ... Definitely a slow-burner, PARIS BY THE BOOK by Liam Callanan is a quirky and unusual read that definitely fits into the contemporary/women's fiction genre better than mystery or thriller. At times I found the book a little tough to get into but as I became surrounded by the essence of Paris, it soon became easier, and the later parts of the book are quite captivating. PARIS BY THE BOOK has unusual characters that aren't always likeable but they are compelling in their own right and this story has something that makes you need to know what really happened. AUTHOR BIO Liam Callanan is a novelist, teacher and journalist, whose first novel, The Cloud Atlas, was a finalist for an Edgar Award. Winner of George W. Hunt, S.J., Prize for Excellence in Journalism, Arts and Letters, Liam has published in The Wall Street Journal, Slate, The New York Times, The Washington Post, and The San Francisco Chronicle, and has recorded numerous essays for public radio. ABOUT THE BOOK 'Turning thirty is like playing musical chairs. The music stops, and everyone just marries whoever they happen to be sitting on.' Who the f*ck is Tori Bailey? There's no doubt that Tori is winning the game of life. A straight-talking, bestselling author, she's inspired millions of women around the world with her self-help memoir. And she has the perfect relationship to boot. But Tori Bailey has been living a lie. Her long-term boyfriend won't even talk about marriage, but everyone around her is getting engaged and having babies. And when her best friend Dee - her plus one, the only person who understands the madness - falls in love, suddenly Tori's in terrifying danger of being left behind. When the world tells you to be one thing and turning thirty brings with it a loud ticking clock, it takes courage to walk your own path. It's time for Tori to practice what she's preached, but the question is: is she brave enough? The debut adult novel by bestselling author Holly Bourne is a blisteringly funny, honest and moving exploration of love, friendship and navigating the emotional rollercoaster of your thirties. MY REVIEW So you know when you are told that this book is amazing, that it will completely knock your socks off and blow your mind, and you open it up with excitement and a little trepidation because what if it doesn't do any of those things? Well, my friends, that is how I felt when I turned the cover for HOW DO YOU LIKE ME NOW by Holly Bourne and I can now say this: THIS BOOK IS A GAME CHANGER!! Insightful, witty, clever, and so damn relatable for so many people whether it is yourself, your friends, or a family member that you recognise, this book confronts the world we live in and the pressure we put ourselves under to have our shit together at every passing moment or at least to appear to the world that we have our shit together. Tori Bailey made a career and a name for herself as a self-help guru when in her mid-twenties she decided to start being honest and say who the f*ck am I? Now in her thirties with a dream publishing deal and a wonderful relationship, great friends, and a lovely apartment, Tori simply has it all, just like her fans expect her to have. Except in reality she hasn't. Everyone she knows is moving into a new phase of their lives with weddings and babies and while she isn't sure if this is what she wants, she cannot stand the fact that she cannot even broach the subject with her boyfriend, Tom. And there is another problem - her relationship that feels like so much work, where anger and blame seem to be on their tongues more than 'I love you', and the fact that they haven't had sex in God knows how long. Throw in pressure for a new book, and her best friend, her ride or die girl, suddenly doing a 180 and apparently leaving Tori behind and it is no wonder that Tori is ready to snap. But will the girl who promotes being honest to the world be able to be honest with herself? Tori made me laugh out loud, made me tear up, and made me scream with frustration throughout this compelling story about our obsession with how our lives should look like instead of whether or not we are actually happy with what we are doing and to hell with the rest. She is strong, capable, intelligent, and witty but also fragile and lacking in her own self-worth. I don't want to give away too much about the plot but let's just say I think everyone knows a Tom or at least some version of him. Everyone seems to live their lives through a social media microscope with questions at every turn - if you're single, are you living it up to your full potential, travelling the world? As soon as you hit your thirties, are you going to get married? As soon as the wedding day is over, when will we hear the pitter patter of tiny feet? With each side always thinking that the other side is greener, this book will make you stop and ask does it really f*cking matter?? Happiness. Just try and be happy and love those who love you and deserve your love in return and whatever path you choose to wander will always be the right one if you are honest with herself (even when it is difficult) and be true to yourself when nobody is watching or clicking 'like' on a minute and often filtered snapshot of real life. So if you haven't already guessed I LOVED this novel and I cannot wait for the world to read HOW DO YOU LIKE ME NOW by Holly Bourne as it really does have something for everyone. AUTHOR BIO Holly Bourne writes YA novels and blogs about feminist issues. Her favourite things to complain loudly about are: the stigma of mental health, women's rights, and the under-appreciation of Keanu Reeves' acting ability. Holly's first two books, Soulmates and The Manifesto on How to be Interesting, have been critically acclaimed and translated into six languages. The first book in the 'Normal' series, Am I Normal Yet?, has been chosen as a World Book Night book for 2016 and has inspired the formation of Spinster Clubs around the country. Before becoming a full-time author, Holly was editor and relationship advisor for a charity website. ABOUT THE BOOK Sometimes, happiness can be found where you least expect it… Twenty-eight-year-old Lana Green has never been good at making friends. She’s perfectly happy to be left alone with her books. Or at least, that’s what she tells herself. Nancy Ellis Hall was once a celebrated writer. When Lana and Nancy become unconventional house mates, their lives will change in ways they never expected. But can an unusual friendship rescue two women who don’t realise they need to be saved? MY REVIEW Oh boy did this novel warm my heart from the top of my head to the tips of my toes, and with characters that make you laugh, problems and illness that will bring a tear to your eye, THE FORGOTTEN GUIDE TO HAPPINESS by Sophie Jenkins is a book that will not be easily forgotten for all of the right reasons. Lana Green found herself and the love of her life and when she wrote a novel based on her journey, she discovered a career that she adored and found fulfilling in all the right ways. But when her soulmate decides that their relationship just might not be right and leaves her in the lurch, Lana finds herself struggling to write and with pressure from her agent to create a new hero, Lana knows that she is in trouble - how can she write a love story when she has lost her happiness? When a chance encounter with Jack leads to Lana meeting Nancy, and teaching a creative writing class opens up a whole new world of friendship, laughter, and possibilities, will Lana and those around her discover the true meaning of happiness once and for all? Or will the echoes of the past come rushing back at the worst possible time? I adored the relationship between Lana, Nancy, and Jack in this story and there is the perfect balance of laughter and tears to carry you through the story effortlessly. The supporting characters are quirky, bright, and full of energy and add that extra special something to the narrative. MY REVIEW FAULT LINES by Doug Johnstone is a tense and atmospheric read that pulls you into the drama and will hold your attention to the very end, When Surtsey discovers her married lover's body on The Inch, she panics and flees the scene, leaving him to nature. ABOUT THE BOOK Two young people meet: Romeo, desperate for love before being sent away to study, and Juliet facing a forced marriage to a nobleman she doesn't know. Fate and circumstance bring them together in a desperate attempt to thwart their parents with a secret marriage. But in a single fateful week, their intricate scheming falls terribly apart. Shakespeare's most well-known and well-loved play has been turned in to a gripping romantic thriller with a modern twist. Rich with the sights and sounds of medieval Italy, peopled with a vibrant cast of characters who spring from the page, this is Shakespeare as you've never read it before. MY REVIEW We all know the tale of Romeo and his fair Juliet, young lovers destined for tragedy and heartbreak - it's enough to bring a tear to your eye just thinking about it. So when I got the opportunity to review JULIET & ROMEO by David Hewson which is a retelling of the classic tale written in everyday English and with some surprises and changes along the way, I jumped at the chance! Set in 1499 the beauty, harsh reality, and that special something of Verona comes alive on the page in front of you. Sixteen-year-old Juliet is intelligent, well-read, and interested in the world of art and knowledge that is coming alive around her but her father has plans to marry her off and he won't take no for an answer. Romeo, whose family are arch enemies of Juliet's, dreams of being a writer but like the lady he will come to love, he is under pressure from his family to follow the path they have chosen for him. And then one fateful night they meet ... I thoroughly enjoyed this story and the surprises that are hidden throughout and for readers who are put off from reading Shakespeare due to its language, JULIET & ROMEO by David Hewson is the perfect story to introduce you to the bard himself and all of his glory. There is drama, beauty, secrets, violence, and more, poetically described throughout this book and with characters that are so much more than meets the eye, JULIET & ROMEO by David Hewson is a book worth reading. GUESTPOST Juliet of the Capulets – a modern woman or not? From time to time authors get a familiar email. Someone’s read your book and they have a question. Which way should they read a particular character or scene? Which take on something is right? It’s always a question that’s difficult for me. I believe writers are vehicles through which stories, complex, fluid entities in their own right, come into being. Our name may be on the cover but in a sense we don’t really own then. The Germans have a wonderful word ‘kopfkino’ meaning cinema of the head. It describes that moment you find something – a novel, a thought, an experience – takes wing in your mind and becomes so real you can ‘see’ it. The instant you step back from a busy road, a lorry thunders past, and you see in your head a little movie in which you’d continued walking and fallen under its wheels. Everything I write, whether it’s a book or a script, is aiming for that kopfkino moment. But here’s the thing: that means the last part in the creative process is down to you, the reader. It’s your imagination that provides the essential final piece in the narrative jigsaw. If that’s the case how can an author tell you how to read a character or scene? Do we have the right? Even if we do… is our opinion any more worthwhile than yours? In Juliet and Romeo there are several players and scenes you can interpret in different ways. Is Juliet’s father a simple misogynist who hates women and wants to keep them in their place? Or simply a man of his era, fixated on his duty as head of the household, a job that, in his eyes, ensures women don’t have to take any big decisions in life? I have my opinion and it falls somewhere between the two. In other words he’s probably both. More problematic is the question of his daughter, an intelligent young woman of sixteen (not the thirteen of Shakespeare) who’s fascinated by the new world of the Renaissance emerging around her. Juliet wants to be a part of that exciting movement, to experience its art, to read its books, to teach the poor to read, to be much more than the standard fifteenth century wife. Does that make her a ‘modern’ woman? Is she a proto-feminist crying ‘Me Too’ before the threatened wedding with Paris makes her his captive? I have to say it’s not the way I saw things as this story emerged. Women at the time of the story were treated pretty shabbily for the most part. The wealthier ones such as Juliet were usually expected to take part in arranged marriages according to the political and financial needs of their families. Love didn’t come into it much at all, which is why so many had affairs on the side. Those from poorer backgrounds had a touch more freedom when it came to choosing partners, but many would find themselves rejected, widowed, penniless and perhaps forced into prostitution if the world turned against them. Or, like Juliet’s Nurse in this story, forced into service to wet nurse the infants of the wealthy. They weren’t all victims, though. When Romeo is briefly exiled to Mantua after killing Tybalt we meet a formidable real-life female ruler, Isabella d’Este, who ran the small city state while her faithless husband was off fighting military campaigns and beginning affairs, one with Lucretia Borgia, daughter of the Pope. Isabella is one of the great women of history, a stateswoman, an intellectual, a patron of the arts and friend to Leonardo da Vinci among others. Romeo is granted a quick and unsuccessful audience with her in her Mantua palace and I hope we see some of the power she wields there, a little eccentrically it should be said. She was fond of designing her own dresses, in fashions other Mantua women copied even when they were topless, and also liked surrounding herself with African servants. Juliet, I feel, would see herself in Isabella’s mould. When we first meet her she’s newly returned from Venice where a clever printer, Aldus Manutius, has perfected the process of printing cheap books. The first paperbacks if you like. What inspires her, I think, is a thirst for knowledge, not a modern concept of ‘freedom’. In 1499 the idea of personal freedom was, I suspect, a somewhat foreign one. In Italy and most of Europe at the time almost everyone felt themselves in thrall to god through the church. Your future was largely mapped out by your sex and whereabouts you were born in society. So for me Juliet is more humanist than feminist. Yes, she feels that women should be free to choose their partners. But I doubt she sees that as more or less important than the idea that literacy should be universal and art should embrace the future as much as the past. It’s intellectual freedom that inspires her, not a desire to throw off the shackles of her sex, which is one reason she feels she’s fighting as much for Romeo’s right to choose his wife as hers to choose a husband. Though readers may disagree – and they should. AUTHOR BIO David Hewson is the author of fourteen novels and several dramatisations for Audible.com. A dramatic reading of Juliet and Romeo read by Richard Armitage was released in November 2017 to great acclaim. David is a regular columnist and reviewer for newspapers and appears regularly at book festivals around the UK. ABOUT THE BOOK Everyone knows an Aisling: Loves going Out Out, but secretly scared of liquid eyeliner. Happy to drink the bar dry, but will bring her own coaster if necessary. Would rather die than miss a cooked hotel breakfast, but can calculate the Points in a Snickers at fifty paces. Aisling's the girl with a heart of gold, but a boyfriend who still hasn't made a peep about their Big Day even after seven years. But then a disastrous romantic getaway shows Aisling that it's time to stop waiting around and leave John behind for the bright lights of Dublin. After she's wailed her way through Adele's Greatest Hits, that is. Between glamorous new flatmates, a scandal at work and finding herself in a weird love square, Aisling is ready to take on the big city. So long as she has her umbrella with her. MY REVIEW Oh My God, I am such a complete Aisling!!! From her fallen arches to her love of carbs and knowledge of points in every morsel, I connected with Aisling in a way that I have never really connected with other characters before. Maybe it is because I am Irish and therefore could relate to so much of Aisling's life and see similarities EVERYWHERE 😂 but mainly I think it was because Aisling is a little bit of everyone we know as well as a little bit of ourselves and to be honest I wouldn't want it any other way. Aisling is solid, reliable, kind, and compassionate, and completely human and she is fed up waiting for her boyfriend, John, of seven years to pop the question. With everyone from their small village moving forward in their lives, Aisling wants to move on to the next step too but when things go quickly south with John, Aisling soon finds herself living in a new apartment with new friends and new possibilities all on the horizon. But there are some things that will never change for this truly Irish gem that will make you laugh when she isn't making you cry. Absolutely fecking hilarious, OH MY GOD WHAT A COMPLETE AISLING is more than just a funny story - it is a story about friendship, strength, loss, and love, and getting the most out of life. There is drama, crazy antics, and pure comedic genius throughout interwoven with moments of compassion, sensitivity, and openness that really touched my heart. I had heard so much about this book before I started to read it and was wary that it could never live up to the hype but it surpasses the hype in my opinion and I will be first in line at the cinema when it hits the big screen. An absolute gem of a book and a must for all the Aislings in the world!! AUTHOR BIO Authors Emer McLysaght and Sarah Breen are Aislings. Maybe not complete Aislings but about 42%. The Aisling character was conceived in their sitting room in 2008, when they began to observe the many traits, characteristics and quirks of a very particular type of Irish girl; one they identified around them and one they identified with. ABOUT THE BOOK Do you really know your friends? On the afternoon of Nick and Lisa’s wedding, their close friend is found poised on a hotel window ledge, ready to jump. As the shock hits their friendship group, they soon realise that none of them are being as honest with themselves – or with each other – as they think. And there are secrets lurking that could destroy everything. Tense, disturbing and clever, My Husband’s Lies is a breath-taking read, perfect for fans of Lucy Clarke and Erin Kelly. MY REVIEW Jaysus, this book is absolutely crazy and messed up - in an utterly compelling and gripping way but messed up all the same!! At a wedding reception a group of old friends and their respective partners gather to celebrate and reminisce but when one of them steps out on a window ledge it will set off a chain reaction among the group where long-buried secrets, lies, and betrayals will come bubbling up to the surface with unimaginable consequences. This book follows a group of friends - Dan, Nick, Will, and Jen and their loved ones - and each chapter lets us see into a particular character and what is happening in their life (both past and present). I really enjoyed the wide sweep of characters and found it easy to keep up with all of the drama. Cheating, damaged childhoods, first love, lies, mental health, sexual attraction, friendship, and love are just some of the issues that MY HUSBAND'S LIES by Caroline England dives into and I could not put this book down until the very end - and what an ending!! There are characters that I felt compassion for and characters that irritated me no end with their selfishness, but at all times I was hooked into the story and needed to know more and that is always a sign of a good novel. MY HUSBAND'S LIES by Caroline England is not a fast-paced thriller but more of a slow unfolding where this group of friends lives comes apart piece by piece in ways that will shock and astound you. Definitely well worth reading!! AUTHOR BIO Born Yorkshire lass, Caroline studied Law at the University of Manchester and stayed over the border. Caroline became a partner in a Solicitors' practice and started writing when she deserted the law to bring up her three lovely daughters. In addition to the publication of her short story collection, Watching Horsepats Feed the Roses by ACHUKAbooks, Caroline has had short stories and poems published in a variety of literary magazines and anthologies. Book length - 464 pages Publisher - Simon & Schuster UK Book Depository - www.bookdepository.com Amazon UK - www.amazon.co.uk Amazon US - www.amazon.com ABOUT THE BOOK Marnie Salt has made so many mistakes in her life that she fears she will never get on the right track. But when she ‘meets’ an old lady on a baking chatroom and begins confiding in her, little does she know how her life will change. Arranging to see each other for lunch, Marnie finds discovers that Lilian is every bit as mad and delightful as she’d hoped – and that she owns a whole village in the Yorkshire Dales, which has been passed down through generations. And when Marnie needs a refuge after a crisis, she ups sticks and heads for Wychwell – a temporary measure, so she thinks. But soon Marnie finds that Wychwell has claimed her as its own and she is duty bound not to leave. Even if what she has to do makes her as unpopular as a force 12 gale in a confetti factory! But everyone has imperfections, as Marnie comes to realise, and that is not such a bad thing – after all, your flaws are perfect for the heart that is meant to love you. The Perfectly Imperfect Woman is the heart-warming and hilarious new novel from the queen of feel-good fiction – a novel of family, secrets, love and redemption … and broken hearts mended and made all the stronger for it. MY REVIEW THE PERFECTLY IMPERFECT WOMAN by Milly Johnson is a book filled with moments - moments that will make you laugh out loud, moments that will make your heart break, and moments where you wish you could crawl between the pages and find yourself in the story so that you could help out the characters that have come to mean so much to you. Marnie Salt has not had an easy life, adopted by a mother (and I use that term very lightly) that didn't want her and being broken down by so many people in her life. But now she is strong, independent, and determined to make it to the top in her career. But she is also lonely. And when she falls for another guy who breaks her heart and lets her down, Marnie loses her career too. Luckily for her, there is a guardian angel in her life in the form of a wacky older lady who says exactly what she thinks and she just might have the answer for Marnie when she offers her a fresh start in the stunning little village of Wychwell with its crazy inhabitants. As Marnie throws herself into her new life and a new job, she is happy to escape the demons from her past, but as she will soon learn you can never run away from who you are and what has happened in your life ... but maybe, just maybe, the hurt from the past can be softened by opening up to those who want and deserve your love? The title of this story really tells it all and I loved watching Marnie come to realise that she really is enough just the way she is. As her story unfolded my heart broke for the child that she was and all that she had gone through and was still going through. Lilian, Lionel, Herv, and Emelie are such special characters, and I really enjoyed the crazy village with its eclectic cast of gossips and interfering busybodies. THE PERFECTLY IMPERFECT WOMAN by Milly Johnson has it all - drama, romance, mystery, and secrets - but it also sends an important message of loving yourself for who you are and recognising your own worth, and I highly recommend this excellent novel to all fiction fans. AUTHOR BIO Milly Johnson was born in Barnsley, raised in Barnsley and still lives in Barnsley - although she did study in Exeter for four years and emigrate to Haworth in West Yorkshire in the 1980s. She trained as an actress, teacher, an accountant, a Customer Services and Suggestion Scheme Manager as well as working in a variety of administrative posts for companies dealing with anything from antique furniture to plastic injection moulded poop scoops. Eventually she found a happy existence writing poems and jokes for the greetings card world - helping to kick off the hugely successful Purple Ronnie project - which she still does on a part time basis whilst penning her novels.
