ABOUT THIS BOOK Katie Manning was a beloved child star until her mid-teens when her manager attacked and permanently scarred her face, effectively ending her career and sending her on a path of all-too-familiar post-Hollywood self-destruction. Now twenty-seven, Katie wants a better answer to those clickbait “Where Are They Now?” articles that float around online. An answer she hopes to find when her brother’s too-good-to-be-true fiancée invites her to a wellness retreat upstate. Together with Katie’s two best friends—one struggling with crippling debt and family obligations, one running away from a failed job and relationship—Katie will try to find the inner peace promised at the tranquil retreat. But finding oneself just might drudge up more memories than Katie is prepared to deal with. Each woman has come to the retreat for different reasons. Each has her secrets to hide. And at the end of this weekend, only one will be left standing. MY REVIEW THE RETREAT by Sherri Smith is a dark and thrilling journey of whys and whats next that really took me by surprise. Katie Manning had the world at her feet as a child star but in the blink of an eye her life changed and she has been hiding from her trauma ever since. Now all grown up Katie drowns her sorrows while picking fault at her soon-to-be sister-in-law, Ellie, and hoping to find some sort of guidance for her future. So when her brother asks her to get to know Ellie better by visiting a retreat with her, Katie quickly agrees. Who knows, maybe this could be the answer to her prayers? Alongside Ellie, and her two best friends from college, Katie is ready for some laughter and enlightenment but the retreat may just bring the darkness from the past bubbling to the surface. As each person there confronts their history, the retreat soon becomes a lot more dangerous and as retribution becomes the order of the day, who will be the winner of the day? THE RETREAT by Sherri Smith is gripping from beginning to end, and while most of the characters aren't that likeable at first, I sympathised with their struggles and emotions as I got to know their history. There were plenty of 'OMG' moments that shocked me during this story, and as the truth begins to come to light, I couldn't put this book down. The writing is raw and packed with emotion and I highly recommend THE RETREAT by Sherri Smith for lovers of psychological thrillers. Read on for an extract! EXTRACT Katie It was like a dream. She couldn’t be awake. A knife. A bloodied knife. It was right in front of her, practically sharing her pillow like a rose left behind by a romantic one-night stand. But she was awake. She bolted upright. Instinctively, she picked up the knife. She saw streaks of blood on her hands and up and down her forearms. Katie leaped from the bed and rushed into the bathroom, the knife still dangling from her hand. She dropped it in the sink with a clatter and gaped at herself in the mirror. A red handprint blazed across the front of her tank top. Her heart started to flip. What the fuck? What the fuck? What the fuck? She’d cut herself. She had to have somehow cut herself. Her hand went to her cheek. There was more blood on her face. Same side as her scar. Two smeared thin strips of it, like half a claw mark. Maybe her scar had split open somehow. That had to be it; it had reopened and oozed while she was asleep. It was something she deeply feared; it was why she brought her own facecloths and her own pillow. As if everything that came in contact with her face held the capacity to slice it back open even though the Incident had been twelve years ago. Katie turned on the tap, cupped some water, and splashed it across her face, then used one of her washcloths from home to dry her cheek. Her scar was still a tightly sealed, shiny line. She pulled off her tank top and pajama bottoms and examined her entire body to see if she’d cut herself somewhere else, but there was nothing. No cuts. Not even little nicks that she might have slept through, no cracked scabs, no scabs at all. Her gut twisted. If the blood didn’t come from her, where did it come from? Ellie. Something happened to Ellie? She was too afraid to look, but she knew she had to. Katie inched toward the door she hadn’t closed all the way and bent slightly forward to peer out into the room at Ellie’s bed. It was unmade and empty. Her heart jumped up into her throat. She couldn’t get enough oxygen into her lungs. Fuck no, no, no. She stepped back into the bathroom, gripped the edge of the sink. Her head was racing with thoughts of calling Nate to explain his fiancée was missing and that, in unrelated news, she’d woken up with a bloodied knife.
