ABOUT THIS BOOK It is 1932, and the losses of the First World War are still keenly felt. Violet Speedwell, mourning for both her fiancé and her brother and regarded by society as a ‘surplus woman’ unlikely to marry, resolves to escape her suffocating mother and strike out alone. A new life awaits her in Winchester. Yes, it is one of draughty boarding-houses and sidelong glances at her naked ring finger from younger colleagues; but it is also a life gleaming with independence and opportunity. Violet falls in with the broderers, a disparate group of women charged with embroidering kneelers for the Cathedral, and is soon entwined in their lives and their secrets. As the almost unthinkable threat of a second Great War appears on the horizon Violet collects a few secrets of her own that could just change everything ... MY REVIEW A SINGLE THREAD by Tracy Chevalier brings the story of Winchester Cathedral and all of the people it draws into its fold alive, in this wonderfully depicted historical tale of female strength, spirit, and determination. In 1932 Violet Speedwell is struggling with her position in life, having lost her brother and fiancè in the war and now viewed as being surplus to requirements for anything other than minding her mother. With a strength of spirit that is just the tip of the iceberg for this woman, Violet organises a transfer from her typing job and moves to Winchester to attain some freedom and some sort of happy life for herself. But life does not always turn out as planned and Violet struggles with money and making new friends, but the peace and serenity she feels in Winchester Cathedral is something she can count on. When she accidentally stumbles across the broderers, a group of women who are embarking on an extraordinary embroidery project for the Cathedral, she becomes one of their number and begins to forge real relationships both with the women and the male bell-ringers, some of whom will bring unbelievable change to her life ... Engaging, fascinating, and absorbing A SINGLE THREAD by Tracy Chevalier brings fact and fiction together effortlessly and as always with this author, the level of historical detail is out of this world. Winchester Cathedral and the broderers come alive on every page and as Violet battles with the many obstacles that are placed in her path, it was a pleasure to watch her strong spirit and grit shine through. A SINGLE THREAD by Tracy Chevalier is a thoroughly enjoyable story and I look forward to more from this wonderful author. AUTHOR BIO Tracy is the author of 10 novels, including the international bestseller GIRL WITH A PEARL EARRING, which has sold over 5 million copies and been made into an Oscar-nominated film starring Scarlett Johansson and Colin Firth.
