ABOUT THIS BOOK How much can a family forgive? A profoundly moving novel about two neighboring families in a suburban town, the bond between their children, a tragedy that reverberates over four decades, the daily intimacies of marriage, and the power of forgiveness. Francis Gleeson and Brian Stanhope, two rookie cops in the NYPD, live next door to each other outside the city. What happens behind closed doors in both houses—the loneliness of Francis’s wife, Lena, and the instability of Brian’s wife, Anne—sets the stage for the explosive events to come. MY REVIEW A character-driven novel brimming with family drama, tension, and heartache, ASK AGAIN, YES by Mary Beth Keane is simply exquisite and is sure to please the most critical of readers. Two cops and their families, living and growing up in a suburban town outside New York City, bound together by the job and their children, find their lives twisted together over the decades, in ways that will change everything for each one of them. But can they find hope in the darkness? And is forgiveness possible? Relationships in all of their complexities, mental health issues, addiction, and cancer are all expertly dealt with and described in this story but in such a way that it never felt too dark or too intense, yet still made me feel each emotion alongside each of the characters as they experienced it. There are many family drama novels out there but this one is truly special but I find it hard to pinpoint exactly why. Obviously, the writing is superb, the characters are well-drawn and developed, and the issues described are relatable to many, but ASK AGAIN, YES has that something extra, that little spark of magic that really made me connect with the story. ASK AGAIN, YES by Mary Beth Keane is a page-turner as promised and a must-read for 2019!
