ABOUT THIS BOOK Only she knows what happened. Only I can make her speak. I love him so totally, completely, sometimes it threatens to overwhelm me. Sometimes I think- No. I won't write about that. ALICIA Alicia Berenson writes a diary as a release, an outlet - and to prove to her beloved husband that everything is fine. She can't bear the thought of worrying Gabriel, or causing him pain. Until, late one evening, Alicia shoots Gabriel five times and then never speaks another word. THEO Forensic psychotherapist Theo Faber is convinced he can successfully treat Alicia, where all others have failed. Obsessed with investigating her crime, his discoveries suggest Alicia's silence goes far deeper than he first thought. And if she speaks, would he want to hear the truth? MY REVIEW After finishing THE SILENT PATIENT by Alex Michaelides I completely understand why it is on everyone's lips because this is a haunting, hypnotic, and devastating story of hurt and betrayal. When forensic psychotherapist begins his new job at The Grove he is determined to break down the walls that Alicia Berenson has built around herself ever since she was found guilty of her husband's murder. She hasn't spoken a word but Theo knows that he can get through to her if she will let him, for Theo's abusive past is the reason he became a psychotherapist and he feels a connection with Alicia who he is convinced is still there, hiding beneath the medication. What drives someone to kill the person they love? As Theo digs deeper and deeper into the case, he starts to question Alicia's guilt at all but when the truth finally becomes clear, it will be unlike anything you could believe. The characters draw you in slowly and gently and soon you find yourself completely consumed with this story and desperate to find the truth. Alicia is fascinating and I found my opinion of her changing throughout as I doubted myself and what I thought was happening. The author has a way of drawing a curtain of tension around the reader as they read and I found the hair on the back of my neck rising at times and glancing out of the window to check for the stranger on the street, which is a powerful talent that Alex Michaelides has. THE SILENT PATIENT by Alex Michaelides is perfect for psychological thriller fans and I would love to see it on our tv screen someday, and I'm certain it will be on every 'best books of 2019' list at the end of the year. AUTHOR BIO Born in Cyprus to a Greek-Cypriot father and English mother, I studied English literature at Cambridge University and got my MA in screenwriting at the American Film Institute in Los Angeles. ABOUT THIS BOOK Just how far is a mother willing to go? When a mysterious note arrives for six months pregnant Dr Eliana Hughes, she begins to doubt every aspect of her life – from her mixed feelings about motherhood to her marriage to Martin, who has become distant in recent months. As the person behind the note escalates their campaign to out Eli’s husband as a cheat, she finds herself unable to trust even her own instincts, and as pressure builds, she makes a mistake that jeopardises her entire future. Elsewhere, someone is watching. Someone who desperately wants a baby to call their own and will go to any lengths to become a mother – and stay a mother… MY REVIEW APPLE OF MY EYE by Claire Allan is a gripping psychological thriller that made me squirm in my seat and, as a mother, made my heart race. Eliana Hughes is stressed out over work, over her relationship with her husband, and over her pregnancy which is making her ill all the time. But when she begins to receive anonymous notes about her husband, Eli's life will never be the same again. For someone wants what she has and will do whatever it takes to get it. The concept of this story made my skin crawl and as I got into the character's minds, this creepy sensation never left me. There is plenty of tension and suspense from start to finish and I found myself both horrified and annoyed at times, as the plot played out. I had a suspicion as to what may happen and I couldn't read it fast enough as I wanted to uncover the truth. With APPLE OF MY EYE, Claire Allan has definitely established herself as a psychological thriller writer of huge merit and I cannot wait to see what she has for us readers in the future. Mystery, danger, tension, lust, and so much more nestles amongst these pages, all set against a stunning backdrop where Bollywood fever has taken over for a new movie, remaking the wonderful Pride and Prejudice. The setting is wonderfully descriptive and as someone who knew next to nothing about Bollywood, this story really makes it come alive for the reader. There are a lot of characters to get to grips with at the beginning but they all provide a special element or subplot to the overall book and make the story richer in the process. The lifestyle of the super-rich will make your jaw drop at times and there is just so much drama throughout that you will never want to put this book down. BOLLYWOOD WIVES by Alex Khan is a firecracker of a story with something for everyone, from romance to suspense, and this is a book that is vibrant and addictive in all of the right ways! ABOUT THIS BOOK He had started to remove his clothes as logic had deserted him and his skin was cracked. Whatever had been going through Cameron's mind when he was alive, he didn't look peaceful in death. Two brothers meet at the remote fence line separating their cattle farms under the relenting sun of the remote outback. In an isolated part of Western Australia, they are each other's nearest neighbour, their homes three hours' drive apart. They are at the stockman's grave, a landmark so old that no one can remember who is buried there. But today, the scant shadow it casts was the last hope for their middle brother, Cameron, who lies dead at their feet. Something had been on Cam's mind. Did he choose to walk to his death? Because if he didn't, the isolation of the outback leaves few suspects... MY REVIEW Utterly addictive, THE LOST MAN by Jane Harper is unlike any book that I have read before. When Cameron's body is found at the stockman's grave, his two brothers, Bub and Nathan cannot understand what he was doing out there all alone and without supplies. They all run their own cattle farms in the remote outback where they grew up under the harsh and brutal control of both their abusive father and the landscape itself, so they all grew up understanding the risks of being caught without supplies. Something doesn't add up, and when they find Cameron's car abandoned with everything he would have needed, Nathan is determined to figure it out. But being back at his childhood home isn't exactly comfortable and after what happened ten years ago, Nathan is more used to isolation. Slowly, pieces of the past begin to make more sense to Nathan and this family begin to realise that they didn't really know each other like they thought they did ... Absolutely compelling from the very first page, the characters and the setting flared to life instantly and I became invested in finding out the truth alongside Nathan, and I really wanted to find out his story too. The author has an exquisite way of rolling out the tension and I felt an uneasiness at so many points during this story and I just wanted to figure out what was going on! The truth was not what I was expecting (I love when that happens!) and yet it made a strange sort of sense. THE LOST MAN by Jane Harper is a masterful portrayal of solitude, secrecy, and control, and I cannot wait to read more from this amazing author. AUTHOR BIO Jane Harper is international bestselling author of The Dry and Force of Nature. Her third book, The Lost Man, will be realised in October 2018. Jane has won numerous top awards including the Australian Book Industry Awards Book of the Year, the Australian Indie Awards Book of the Year, the CWA Gold Dagger Award for Best Crime Novel, and the British Book Awards Crime and Thriller Book of the Year. ABOUT THIS BOOK As the Great War continues to take its toll, headstrong twenty-one-year-old Emily Bryce is determined to contribute to the war effort. She is convinced by a cheeky and handsome Australian pilot that she can do more, and it is not long before she falls in love with him and accepts his proposal of marriage. When he is sent back to the front, Emily volunteers as a “land girl,” tending to the neglected grounds of a large Devonshire estate. It’s here that Emily discovers the long-forgotten journals of a medicine woman who devoted her life to her herbal garden. The journals inspire Emily, and in the wake of devastating news, they are her saving grace. Emily’s lover has not only died a hero but has left her terrified—and with child. Since no one knows that Emily was never married, she adopts the charade of a war widow. As Emily learns more about the volatile power of healing with herbs, the found journals will bring her to the brink of disaster, but may open a path to her destiny MY REVIEW A beautiful and compelling story of hope, determination, and the importance of friendship all set against the backdrop of the harsh reality of WWI for those that are left behind. Emily Bryce lives in a gilded cage with overprotective parents who fear for her ever since the death of her brother who was a soldier. But when she turns eighteen she braves her parent's wrath and becomes a land girl and the handsome, injured soldier that she had struck up a friendship with soon becomes her fiancé. But when tragedy strikes, Emily finds herself alone and adrift with more than just herself to look after and as Emily works on a large Devonshire estate, she becomes friendly with the aloof lady of the manor, and soon can see a future in this sleepy, friendly village with her fellow land girls. When she discovers a herb book in the old cottage where she is staying, Emily starts to experiment and begins to help the locals as much as she can. But not everyone is happy with Emily's arrival and sometimes the mistakes of the past can happen again. The characters in THE VICTORY GARDEN by Rhys Bowen are wonderfully in-depth and while Emily was a little naive at times, she is the product of her time and class in life, and I felt so protective towards her and her fellow land girls who have all dealt with harsh lives yet still find the strength to give something back to the war effort and make a difference. The setting is perfectly painted on each page and really comes alive at times throughout this book. The tragic and devastating consequences of war on both the soldiers and their families is expertly handled and I know it made me really stop and think about all those who sacrificed their lives for our freedom. THE VICTORY GARDEN is a stunning emotional story that will touch your heart in so many ways and I highly recommend it to historical fiction and war fiction fans alike. AUTHOR BIO Rhys Bowen was born and raised in England but currently divides her time between California and Arizona where she goes to escape from the harsh California winters. ABOUT THIS BOOK Harper Lee Wilcox has been marking time in her hometown of Kitty Hawk, North Carolina since her husband, Noah Wilcox’s death, nearly five years earlier. With her son Ben turning five and living at home with her mother, Harper fights a growing restlessness, worried that moving on means leaving the memory of her husband behind. Her best friend, Allison Teague, is dealing with struggles of her own. Her husband, a former SEAL that served with Noah, was injured while deployed and has come home physically healed but fighting PTSD. With three children under foot and unable to help her husband, Allison is at her wit’s end. In an effort to reenergize her own life, Harper sees an opportunity to help not only Allison but a network of other military wives eager to support her idea of starting a string of coffee houses close to military bases around the country. In her pursuit of her dream, Harper crosses paths with Bennett Caldwell, Noah’s best friend and SEAL brother. A man who has a promise to keep, entangling their lives in ways neither of them can foresee. As her business grows so does an unexpected relationship with Bennett. Can Harper let go of her grief and build a future with Bennett even as the man they both loved haunts their pasts? MY REVIEW I have always respected and admired the bravery of soldiers but after reading THE MILITARY WIFE by Laura Trentham that respect has tripled and not only for those brave men and women willing to sacrifice it all for their country, but also their families who are so brave in their own right. It has been five years since Harper Wilcox lost her husband Noah, a SEAL, but she has gotten through it with her beautiful boy and her beloved mum by her side. But Harper feels unfulfilled with her career and longs to finally use her degrees but isn't sure how. When her friend Allison needs her help, an idea for a business begins to form and Harper believes that it could make all the difference, not just for her but for all of the military wives all over the country, and she has the money from a bravery award that Noah received after he died. The only thing is, he didn't. Bennett Caldwell, Noah's best friend, and former SEAL, had promised Noah when he was dying that he would take care of Harper and her son and money seemed to be the best way to do it. But when Harper confronts him over why he lied to her and gave her his money, Bennett is confronted with a spirited, feisty, attractive woman who makes him want to abandon his lonely, solitary existence. As Bennett helps Harper set up their new venture, they cannot help the sizzling chemistry that they have between them. But Bennett has his own demons and secrets that he cannot share with her, and the harsh reality of life after war may just be too much for them to handle. THE MILITARY WIFE by Laura Trentham is a beautiful and heartbreaking story that I devoured in a couple of hours. Sensitive topics such as PTSD, grief, abandonment, and trauma are all expertly handled and it really opened my eyes to the life of military families. Harper is a wonderfully well-rounded character and her honesty was so refreshing and at times, hilarious, throughout this book. I fell in love with Bennett and desperately wanted to give him a hug so many times through this story. The community spirit and that unique bond that these families share is truly amazing and really shone in this book. THE MILITARY WIFE by Laura Trentham is an excellent novel and I cannot wait for more from this series. AUTHOR BIO LAURA TRENTHAM is an award-winning author of contemporary and historical romance. She is a member of RWA, and has been a finalist multiple times in the Golden Heart competition. A chemical engineer by training and a lover of books by nature, she lives in South Carolina. ABOUT THIS BOOK Fleetwood Shuttleworth is 17 years old, married, and pregnant for the fourth time. But as the mistress at Gawthorpe Hall, she still has no living child, and her husband Richard is anxious for an heir. When Fleetwood finds a letter she isn¹t supposed to read from the doctor who delivered her third stillbirth, she is dealt the crushing blow that she will not survive another pregnancy. When she crosses paths by chance with Alice Gray, a young midwife, Alice promises to help her give birth to a healthy baby, and to prove the physician wrong. When Alice is drawn into the witchcraft accusations that are sweeping the North-West, Fleetwood risks everything by trying to help her. But is there more to Alice than meets the eye? As the two women's lives become inextricably bound together, the legendary trial at Lancaster approaches, and Fleetwood¹s stomach continues to grow. Time is running out, and both their lives are at stake. Only they know the truth. Only they can save each other. MY REVIEW Breathtaking, emotional, and powerful in every sense of the word, THE FAMILIARS by Stacey Halls is a stunning portrayal of fear, friendship, truth and betrayal of power and I have no doubt that this will be on every 2019 book of the year list at the end of this year. Fleetwood Shuttleworth deeply loves her husband Richard and has settled in their home, Gawthorpe Hall, which doesn't hold the haunting memories of her childhood. But she knows that everyone treats her like a child because she is seventeen and struggles to show her inner strength to those around her. As she carries her child, Fleetwood is desperate to provide Richard the heir that he so desires, but when she comes across a letter that she was never meant to see, it throws her world into turmoil. Desperate to see this baby survive and herself along with it, Fleetwood comes across a quiet woman in the woods, Alice Gray, who is a midwife and she immediately hires her. And with Alice in her life, Fleetwood begins to feel better and stronger and experiences friendship for the first time in her life. But the countryside is rife with accusations of witchcraft and with power-hungry people in power, nobody is safe. Can Fleetwood protect herself and her baby while helping someone she has come to trust beyond measure? There are so many layers to this story which all combine to really wow your senses as you read. The harsh and brutal reality of the witch trials flares to life and makes you realise how cruel and hard it must have been for women at that time. Fleetwood is a vulnerable character at the beginning and as a mother, I wanted to protect her which became an even stronger inclination as the story developed, but then Fleetwood began to embrace her own strength and it was powerful to encounter. The danger, the desperation, the need for someone to listen and care, are evident from start to finish and will draw you in instantly but it is the strength of these two amazing women that will make your breath hitch and your heart race. THE FAMILIARS by Stacey Halls is a masterpiece and I cannot wait to read more from this talented author. AUTHOR BIO Stacey Halls grew up in Rossendale, Lancashire, as the daughter of market traders. She has always been fascinated by the Pendle witches. She studied journalism at the University of Central Lancashire and moved to London aged 21. She was media editor at The Bookseller and books editor at Stylist.co.uk, and has also written for Psychologies, the Independent and Fabulous magazine, where she now works as Deputy Chief Sub Editor.
