ABOUT THIS BOOK A snowy Victorian Christmas Two festive short stories! In The Christmas Runaway by Jenni Fletcher: wilful, independent heiress, Fiona MacKay, impulsively runs away to a remote Scottish tower where she’s trapped in the snow with equally headstrong, deliciously dishevelled Angus Drummond. In Their Snowbound Reunion by Elisabeth Hobbes: fifteen years ago, Amy Munroe and Anthony Matthews were cruelly parted, and each blames the other. When Amy becomes Anthony’s new housekeeper, their passion is reawakened! MY REVIEW Two enchanting stories with utterly loveable characters and romance that will melt your heart, SNOW-KISSED PROPOSALS by Jenni Fletcher & Elisabeth Hobbes is the perfect romance read to curl up on the sofa with this winter. From determined, intelligent women who know what they deserve to the headstrong and passionate men that love them for who they are, both of these stories are sure to tick all of the boxes on your romance and festive list this year. Fiona is upfront, straight-talking, and unwilling to shrink herself to please a man but when she meets her best friend's brother Angus, she cannot help but feel the spark and he may just be her match in every possible way. Cruelly kept from each other all those years ago, Amy and Anthony have never forgiven each other for what they believed happened but when they find themselves in the same house, could the truth set their love free? SNOW-KISSED PROPOSALS is simply warm and lovely in every possible way and reading both of these stories truly made me smile and would make a fantastic two-story collection for yourself or as a gift this festive season. AUTHOR INFO Jenni Fletcher studied English at Cambridge University before doing a PhD on Edwardian literature at Hull. Originally from the north coast of Scotland, she now lives in Yorkshire, where she juggles motherhood and writing. She loves the Medieval and Victorian periods and writes stories set in both. Elisabeth’s writing career began when she finished third in Harlequin’s So You Think You Can Write contest in 2013 and hasn't looked back. She teaches Primary school but would rather write full time because unlike five year olds her characters generally do what she tells them. She spends most of her spare time reading and is a pro at cooking one-handed while holding a book. ABOUT THIS BOOK The younger son of a youngest son, Captain William Hawksmoor of the Royal Navy never expected to inherit a marquessate, and is none too pleased when he does so, especially when he learns that the he is required to marry within a year or be forever dealing with Trustees. As the new Marquis of Athelney, he takes command of Kingscastle, the family seat, and discovers much to be done to set it in order. There is also his aunt, Lady Willoughby Hawksmoor, determined that her timid daughter should be the next marchioness. When she discovers he is far more interested in Eleanor Burgess, her under-paid and much put-upon companion, Lady Willoughby will stop at nothing to keep them apart. MY REVIEW It is a truth universally acknowledged that I am completely in love with so many books in this genre, and KINGSCASTLE by Sophia Holloway is no exception! When Captain William Hawksmoor finds himself swapping his independent life of the Royal Navy to become a Marquis, it alters his world in so many ways - the right clothes he must wear, the right places he must frequent, and having staff to cater to his every need. But none of those things shocked him as much as the stipulation in the will that states he must marry to keep his inheritance. With his formidable Aunt who is determined that her quiet daughter must be his bride, William has no doubt that they would make each other miserable, and when he cannot help but be captivated by his Aunt's companion, Eleanor, trouble is on the way. With a stunning setting, engaging characters, and plenty of charm and wit to capture your imagination, KINGSCASTLE by Sophia Holloway is sure to please historical romance and Regency fans everywhere. William is quick-witted, sharp, and likeable, and Eleanor is intelligent and feisty which I loved. There are plenty of characters in this story and they really add that something extra to the overall feeling and depth of this romance, and I became connected to their stories too. I thoroughly enjoyed KINGSCASTLE and I look forward to reading more from Sophia Holloway. AUTHOR INFO Sophia Holloway read Modern History at Oxford, also writes the Bradecote and Catchpoll medieval mysteries as Sarah Hawkswood. ABOUT THIS BOOK The City of London, 1678. New Year’s Day. Twelve years have passed since the Great Fire ripped through the City. Eighteen since the fall of Oliver Cromwell and the restoration of a King. London is gripped by hysteria, and rumors of Catholic plots and sinister foreign assassins abound. When the body of a young boy drained of his blood is discovered on the snowy bank of the Fleet River, Robert Hooke, the Curator of Experiments at the just-formed Royal Society for Improving Natural Knowledge, and his assistant Harry Hunt, are called in to explain such a ghastly finding—and whether it's part of a plot against the king. They soon learn it is not the first bloodless boy to have been discovered. Meanwhile, that same morning Henry Oldenburg, the Secretary of the Royal Society, blows his brains out, and a disgraced Earl is released from the Tower of London, bent on revenge against the King, Charles II. Wary of the political hornet’s nest they are walking into – and using scientific evidence rather than paranoia in their pursuit of truth – Hooke and Hunt must discover why the boy was murdered, and why his blood was taken. MY REVIEW An astounding tale of treachery, plots, murder, and the ever-developing world of science in the 17th Century, THE BLOODLESS BOY by Robert J. Lloyd is a must for historical fiction fans everywhere. It's 1678 and Harry Hunt has been summoned by his old mentor, Robert Hooke, to the banks of the Fleet River, where a child's body has been discovered. But this is no ordinary case of murder as the child has been completely drained of his blood, and a cipher has been left as a possible clue. With political plots teetering around every corner, Harry and Robert must uncover the reason this has happened and who is behind it all, but who can they truly trust? Using their scientific expertise, Harry is determined to get to the bottom of it all, for the victim's sake and to finally step out of the shadow of his mentor and prove himself worthy. But nothing is ever quite as it seems, and the clock is ticking. This story takes the genre of the historical novel to an entirely new level and I could not put it down. The language, settings, and characters (some of whom were real at the time) all combined to make this story feel alive in every possible way. Religion, which was at the heart of everything at that time in history, is elegantly woven through political intrigues, and watching Harry try to wade through it all while using his scientific knowledge to solve the case, was exciting and compelling at every turn. THE BLOODLESS BOY is a superb novel from beginning to end and I cannot wait to read more from Robert J Lloyd. AUTHOR INFO Robert Lloyd, the son of parents who worked in the British Foreign Office, grew up in South London, Innsbruck, and Kinshasa. He studied for a Fine Art degree, starting as a landscape painter, but it was while studying for his MA degree in The History of Ideas that he first read Robert Hooke's diary, detailing the life and experiments of this extraordinary man. After a 20-year career as a secondary school teacher, he has now returned to painting and writing. The Bloodless Boy is his debut novel. He is at work on a sequel. ABOUT THIS BOOK Cinna would quite literally kill for the throne… For years, Cinna has been forced to serve her wealthy cousins rather than attend society events alongside them. She has waited for the chance to prove herself and exact revenge. When a ball at the castle is announced, promising to bring many powerful people to town, she seizes the opportunity to strike. She bets her best friend, Johann, a small-time thief and con-man, that she can land a greater score the night of the ball than he can. They embark on parallel heists. But as their plots unfold, things begin to unravel: by the end of the night, the castle’s on lock down, a duchess is dead, a mansion has burnt to the ground – and Cinna hasn’t even stolen anything. Or has she captured something far more valuable than gold and jewels? MY REVIEW A compelling tale of revenge, PRETTY DEADLY by Kelsey Josund is a fabulous retelling of the classic Cinderella tale but with a dark edge that will blow your mind. Treated appallingly by her wealthy relatives and surviving by her wits and intelligence throughout her life, Cinna has plans to pull off the heist of all heists at the royal ball of the century which will be held at the castle. Placing a bet with her best friend and loveable thief, Johann, to make the stakes that little bit more interesting, Cinna is prepared to get what she wants. But when things start to go wrong and unexpected happenings throw everything off course for the pair, will Cinna achieve her goal, or will she get more than she bargained for? Everyone knows the tale of Cinderella and while this story definitely has elements of the classic, PRETTY DEADLY is unique in its own right with characters and a plot that will keep you gripped from start to finish. Murder, misdirection, secrets, and more all lie waiting among these pages, and I couldn't put this book down until I had reached the end. PRETTY DEADLY by Kelsey Josund is a wonderful novel and I cannot wait for more!!! AUTHOR INFO Kelsey Josund is a software engineer and author of scifi, fantasy and young adult fiction, including a series of forthcoming feminist retellings of classic childhood fairytales. Originally from Seattle, Kelsey loves getting outdoors and living in places that allow her to escape to the mountains on the weekends. She cares deeply about the ecosystems that humans impact and that impact them in return. Her writing explores these themes through the prism of the traditional coming-of-age arcs of science fiction and fantasy. Kelsey is particularly interested in stories and characters that complicate the traditional and familiar, leading her to rediscover old tales from new and unexpected angles. With a passion for storytelling in all its forms, Kelsey approaches writing fiction the same way she approaches writing code: she likes to know where it’s going, but wants to figure out the details as she goes. She believes good software is a lot like a good story—full of neat and clever solutions to tricky problems, beautiful at a granular level but also from a distance. Kelsey lives and works in Silicon Valley, California with her partner and their cat. She holds a bachelor’s and master’s degree in computer science from Stanford University, and is currently plotting her return to the Pacific Northwest and working on her next novel. It’s an unfolding tragedy that has caught the attention of the world’s media, and pressure is rapidly growing on the Indian authorities to provide answers. For them, of course, Ethan—found barely alive at the foot of the mountain—is the key to everything. And the account he gives to investigators will prove extraordinary: of a remote commune that grew beyond recognition through a simple quirk of fate. Of a harmonious society that became driven by greed. Of a paradise befouled by its own inhabitants. Yet, for all of Ethan’s candour, there were some events that took place on the mountain of which he cannot speak—dark, terrible secrets that he intends to take to his grave. Will they be able to navigate the health system and succeed in getting her the urgent operation needed, to prevent her from spending the rest of her life in a wheelchair? ABOUT THIS BOOK Can two rivals create mistletoe magic? When a local wilderness lodge almost cancels its Twelve Days of Christmas festival, Emma Halloran leaps at the chance to convince the owners of her vision for the business. But Luke Emerson has his own plans—to keep the lodge in the family and protect his grandfather’s legacy. Can these utter opposites unite over their shared passion this Christmas? MY REVIEW Engaging, warm, and set in a beautiful place, TWELVE DATES OF CHRISTMAS by Laurel Greer is a lovely holiday romance and is sure to get you into a festive mood. Emma Halloran has always faded into the background of her family and wants to prove to herself and her family that she has what it takes to follow her passion, and for her, that's creating a stunning eco-lodge that would become the ultimate wedding destination. There's only one problem - getting the Emerson's to sell the lodge. Luke Emerson has his own plans for his family's business and while this may not be his dream job, he isn't going to stand by and watch it leave the family. But as Emma and Luke butt heads, will romance start to blossom in the most unlikely of places? Endearing characters, a stunning lodge, and plenty of mishaps and drama along the way make TWELVE DATES OF CHRISTMAS by Laurel Greer an enjoyable read with a classic Christmas romance feel. Emma is determined and intelligent, while Luke is loyal and hardworking, and it was lovely to watch them recognise the connection that lies between them. A lovely romance to read this Christmas. Excerpt of Twelve Dates of Christmas by Laural Greer (Oct 26) Harlequin Special Edition Add Twelve Dates of Christmas to your Goodreads! And while he didn’t get why the Brownie leader was intent on making the tree into a rainbow bird, he wanted to do right by the kids. The small troop had asked him to help—a request that had earned a storm cloud of a frown from “Ms. Emma”—because he was the tallest person present who wasn’t already working on a tree. The girls also seemed to think being the local game warden gave him some sort of magical knowledge about bird-themed crafts. If feather number one hadn’t proved them wrong, feather two sure had. No matter. He couldn’t disappoint the girls, even though he had electrical cords to run, spotlights to position and a staff to organize. And at the top of his to-do list: keep his grandfather from leaving his house to survey the action. Luke gritted his teeth at the possibility of Hank Emerson trying to hook up the power connections for the trees while hacking up phlegm from his pneumonia-ridden lungs. No. Hank was going to keep his stubborn ass fixed to his well-worn couch for the next twelve days, and Luke would do everything else that needed doing. He got into a rhythm, fully covering the high-up branches the little girls couldn’t reach with their shorter arms and rubber cement. “Now the sparkles.” A Brownie peered at him hopefully as she held out a can of spray paint. No, spray glitter. “Your troop leader didn’t mention sparkles,” he said. The girl pressed the can into his hand. “We want it on the edges.” “You got it.” He was asking for a dressing-down from Emma for following the girls’ instructions instead of hers, but she was nowhere to be seen and time was running out. With a careful hand, he sprayed the tips of as many feathers as he could. The Brownies oohed and aahed. Choking on the fumes, he stepped back, forcing a straight face as he took in the eyesore. It was a good thing every charity or youth group who entered the twelve-day contest received at least a portion of the total funds raised. If the money was solely awarded to the first-place team, the Brownies wouldn’t have a chance at the new canoes they hoped to afford. The Brownies were clearly of a different mind. They gazed at their creation, faces shining as bright as the pink-and-blue lights Emma had wound through the branches at exact one-inch intervals. Feathers filled in the rest of the spaces. An extra-large papier-mâché pear, wrapped in green, raindrop-size LED bulbs, topped the kaleidoscope monstrosity. A pear in a partridge tree. Only Emma… “Looking great, girls,” he lied. “That’s a big frown, Warden Emerson.” The mild comment came from beside him. He spun, facing Emma Halloran and her glossy red smirk. It didn’t matter the occasion—Emma was always done up like she was anticipating an Instagram photoshoot. And no matter how many times she shot his flannel shirts and muddy work boots a disdainful look, he still struggled to keep his eyes off her. Her wool coat hid the curves of her tall figure, but he’d been able to conjure a mental image of her sexy shape since she sat behind him in twelfth grade English class. He’d turned around so often, trying to bring a blush to her pale cheeks, he’d had to go to the chiropractor for a kink in his neck. Not much had changed in sixteen years. Not her sleek brown hair begging to be mussed, nor her legs, longer than the Gallatin River. Nor her love of getting under his skin. AUTHOR INFO Born and raised in a small Vancouver Island town, Laurel picked up her pen to write Julie Garwood fan-fiction during junior high English class. She hasn't put it down since. ABOUT THIS BOOK ’Tis the season for mulled wine, mince pies, and magic under the mistletoe… Flora loves Christmas more than anything else in the world, so she’s gutted when her Scrooge-alike boss fires her from Deck the Halls Christmas emporium. But now she finally has a chance to follow her dreams – and what better place to start than the home of Christmas? Before she can say ‘sleigh bells’, Flora’s on her way to Lapland in a campervan-cum-Christmas-shop. She can’t wait to spend her days drinking hot chocolate and taking reindeer-drawn carriage rides, but something Flora didn’t expect was meeting Connor, a Norse god of a man who makes her heart flutter and snowflakes swirl in her stomach. There’s just one problem: Connor hates Christmas. Can Flora convince Connor of the joys of Christmas – and will she find a festive romance along the way? MY REVIEW Hilarious, romantic, and utterly charming, FLORA'S TRAVELLING CHRISTMAS SHOP by Rebecca Raisin in Christmas on a plate with some extra magic for good measure. Flora's career and her love life never seem to quite work out but that was before she started working at a Christmas emporium and before she started dating a poet. Everything is looking up in Flora's world. Until it isn't. Single again and jobless, Flora knows that she has to make some changes in her life but she's just not quite sure how, when her best friend has the perfect plan. Flora should buy a camper van and set up a travelling Christmas shop, as Flora adores Christmas and lives it to the full. Flora loves this idea and takes it one step further by travelling to Lapland to set up her business - what better place to have a Christmas shop than in the home of Christmas itself - and it isn't long before she has set off on an adventure of a lifetime. Meeting fabulous new friends (and a few foes along the way) are all part of Flora's exciting new life but when she meets Connor, Flora feels something for him that she has never felt before. But there is one huge problem - Connor hates Christmas. How could things possibly work out between them when they are so very different? Or could Flora's magical Christmas spirit show Connor that love is nothing to fear? I absolutely loved this story and there is one reason why: Flora. She is sweet, funny, compassionate, fiery, and completely unpredictable which makes her even more loveable. As I read about the Christmas market, I could see it so clearly and wanted to hop on to the next flight to Lapland, it was that appealing. The camper van community and beauty of friendship truly shone throughout this story and while I didn't plan to read this book in one sitting, I just couldn't make myself put it down. FLORA'S TRAVELLING CHRISTMAS SHOP definitely needs to be gracing our screens someday as it would make the perfect Christmas movie, and as always, I cannot wait to read more from Rebecca Raisin who is one of my favourite authors in this genre. AUTHOR INFO Rebecca Raisin writes heartwarming romance from her home in sunny Perth, Australia. Her heroines tend to be on the quirky side and her books are usually set in exotic locations so her readers can armchair travel any day of the week. The only downfall about writing about gorgeous heroes who have brains as well as brawn, is falling in love with them – just as well they’re fictional. Rebecca aims to write characters you can see yourself being friends with. People with big hearts who care about relationships and believe in true, once in a lifetime love. Her bestselling novel Rosie’s Travelling Tea Shop has been optioned for film with MRC studios and Frolic Media.
