ABOUT THIS BOOK Sometimes life can be bittersweet . . . Between tending to the whims of her seven-year-old and the demands of her boss, Viv barely gets a moment to herself. It’s not quite the life she wanted, but she hasn’t run screaming for the hills yet. But then Viv’s husband Andy makes his mid-life crisis her problem. He’s having an affair with his (infuriatingly age-appropriate) colleague, a woman who – unlike Viv – doesn’t put on weight when she so much as glances at a cream cake. Viv suddenly finds herself single, with zero desire to mingle. Should she be mourning the end of life as she knows it, or could this be the perfect chance to put herself first? When life gives you lemons, lemonade just won’t cut it. Bring on the gin! MY REVIEW Oh, this book is the perfect tonic! It made me laugh so much and laughter is definitely worth pursuing at every opportunity. But this story also has a lot of depth to it too and I cannot wait to read more from Fiona Gibson. Viv and her husband Andy have reached a strange point in their twenty-five-year life together. She is struggling with the menopause and the MANY side-effects that it is causing and while she yearns for closeness with Andy, he seems to be moving further away from her. That is until he completely moves away from her to be with another woman - a woman he has been having an affair with and now loves. Now Viv must hold it together for her kids and herself while trying to figure out what she wants from her life going forward. This involves life coaches, meddling and well-meaning friends, new adventures, and some hot flashes along the way. But when life gives you lemons ... The characters are wonderfully relatable, likeable, with their own special quirks that made me fall in love with them instantly, and Viv stands out as the best because of her determination, her complete honesty, and her willingness to try to be happy. WHEN LIFE GIVES YOU LEMONS by Fiona Gibson is the kind of story that will have you sympathising while snorting with laughter, and I found myself reading it in one sitting because I was enjoying it so much. An excellent story that will warm your heart, WHEN LIFE GIVES YOU LEMONS is a must-read for everyone. AUTHOR BIO Fiona Gibson is the author of 15 romantic comedy novels, including the best-selling The Mum Who Got Her Life Back (Avon), which celebrates the empty nester years. Under the name of Ellen Berry, she also writes the heartwarming Rosemary Lane series (Snowdrops on Rosemary Lane is out in January 2020). Fiona grew up in West Yorkshire, before working on Jackie and Just Seventeen magazines - in those heady pre-internet days when it was thrilling to get a free plastic mirror taped to the front of your magazine. She went on to edit More! magazine, where she introduced the infamous Position of the Fortnight. After having twin sons and a daughter, Fiona started to write novels, usually at night with the house full of toddlers and builders. She was sleep deprived anyway so it really didn't make any difference. She also loves to draw, paint and run - by some miracle she managed to finish the London Marathon 2019. With the kids all grown up now, she and her husband Jimmy live in Glasgow with their collie cross, Jack. ABOUT THIS BOOK At a global tech gala hosted at the British Museum, scientist Tobias Hawke is due to unveil an astonishing breakthrough. His AI system appears to have reached consciousness, making Hawke the leading light in his field. But when terrorists storm the building, they don't just leave chaos in their wake. They seize Hawke's masterwork, sparking a chain reaction of explosive events which could end the world as we know it. Michael North, ex-assassin and spy-for-hire, must find the killers and recover the AI. But he can't do it alone. Hawke's wife, Esme, and teenage hacker, Fangfang, have their own reasons to help complete North's mission – and together they unravel a dark and deadly conspiracy which stretches right to the top of the British elite. Can North survive long enough to uncover the whole truth? Or is it already too late for humanity? MY REVIEW Action-packed with heart, CURSE THE DAY by Judith O'Reilly was the perfect escapist read and I cannot wait to read more from her. Michael North has given up on life after a bullet lodged itself in his brain and he lost the woman he loved. He has exacted his revenge on those who took her life but serving his country and fighting for a cause seems meaningless at this point. But when a young friend of his needs his help, he cannot let her down, and Michael soon finds himself hunting down a killer while trying to protect a clever and very determined woman. As the world of AI reaches new bounds there are those who will maim and murder to make it theirs to control. Can Michael protect those he cares about while uncovering the whole, ugly truth? Or has his luck finally run out? Wonderfully paced and filled with energy and dynamic characters, CURSE THE DAY was just what I needed to put my worries aside for a few hours. Part conspiracy story, part thriller, there is never a dull moment in this story and I devoured it in one sitting. I thoroughly enjoyed Judith O'Reilly's writing flair and her knack for making characters come alive in a very real way, and I highly recommend this book for anyone who wants to forget about the real world for a while. CURSE THE DAY by Judith O'Reilly is a firecracker of a story and is sure to please thriller and action fans alike - a must-read! AUTHOR BIO Judith O’Reilly's claim to fame is that one of her books was a Radio 4 Book of the Week. As far as she's concerned that's as good as it gets. Judith has written three books. Her latest book is called Killing State. It's a commercial political thriller and her first novel – at least the first one she's allowed to leave the house without her. She likes to describe it as a Lee Child meets Robert Harris, with a young and very British action hero and compelling and dynamic female characters. She may be the only person who ever thinks that. We'll have to see. Judith's a former political producer with BBC 2’s Newsnight and ITN’s Channel 4 News, and a former education correspondent with The Sunday Times where she also covered politics, undercover reporting and general news. She still writes for The Sunday Times. Her two non-fiction books were called Wife in the North and A Year of Doing Good (both published by Viking Penguin, in 2008 and 2013 respectively). Wife in the North reached number three in the UK bestsellers’ chart and was in the top ten for five weeks. It was also a top ten bestseller in Germany. It sold into ten countries, was serialised by The Sunday Times and the Daily Telegraph, was a BBC Radio 4 Book of the Week (has she mentioned that already?), and was based on Judith’s eponymous blog which was named as one of the top 100 blogs in the world by The Sunday Times. Judith’s blog is credited with kicking off the popularity of domestic blogging in the UK. For A Year of Doing Good, she did a good deed a day for a year. It did not make her a better person. She has taught memoir and blogging at Newcastle University, and occasionally advises on strategic communications. Most of all though, she writes and drinks a lot of tea. Occasionally, she shakes things up and drinks covfefe. ABOUT THIS BOOK Gina has enough to deal with for one week: a disapproving daughter, her ex-psychotherapist living next door and a hopeless ex-husband she's still in love with. Without a diagnosis of cancer. Catapulted into the unknown territory of surgery, chemo and support groups, Gina faces her predicament with strength, wit and a faithful pair of elasticated-waist trousers. As treatment progresses, Gina finds herself asking surprising questions. Will she ever be able to concentrate on what her oncologist is saying, without being distracted by his enormous moustache? Should her best friend's thirty-year love of David Essex prevent her advice from being taken seriously? And how will she explain her bald bonce to her seven-year-old granddaughter? MY REVIEW With everything that is going on I have to admit that I lost my reading mojo somewhere along the way and it wasn't the fault of any of the many books that I picked up, it was just me. So when I picked up GINA'S THERAPY by Silvia Sbaraini I was pleasantly surprised to feel myself connect with the characters straight away and feel that little pull of excitement again. And just like that my mojo was back! Gina's life is complicated - from her on-again off-again relationship with the man she has loved her whole life, her strained relationship with her only daughter, the ghost of her mother who haunts her intermittently, and her new next-door neighbour who used to be her therapist. Oh, and we cannot forget about her adorable granddaughter's poop obsession which she may have started. So when she gets a cancer diagnosis, it throws her even more. How is she going to cope with this on top of everything else that is going on in her life? Thrown into treatment, Gina faces this new test like she has everything else in her life, with her own brand of humour and inner strength that knows no bounds, and it was a pleasure to be alongside her through it all. The characters are the huge stars of this story and GINA'S THERAPY truly is unique. I adored Gina's strength and ability to laugh throughout it all but I also connected with the vulnerable side of her too. All of the characters play an important role in this book and I enjoyed them all immensely. You will laugh, you will shed a tear, and you will feel like one of the gang as you read GINA'S THERAPY by Silvia Sbaraini. If ever there was a book to distract you at this time, this book is it - enjoyable from start to finish. AUTHOR BIO Silvia has a background in academia and social science research and was a freelance editorial script advisor for children's television for a number of years. Her debut novel, Your Move, was published in 2017. Silvia has an MA in Creative Writing and teaches at the Open University. She was born in Italy, but brought up on the south coast of England by her mother and grand-mother. She has two daughters, two step-daughters and three granddaughters. With an abundance of women and girls in her life, it's not surprising that female relationships, family, love and friendship are frequently the focus of Silvia's writing. ABOUT THIS BOOK Ursula, Gareth and Alice have never met before. Ursula thinks she killed the love of her life. Gareth’s been receiving strange postcards. And Alice is being stalked. None of them are used to relying on others – but when the three strangers’ lives unexpectedly collide, there’s only one thing for it: they have to stick together. Otherwise, one of them will die. Three strangers, two secrets, one terrifying evening. MY REVIEW Absolutely brilliant from start to finish, STRANGERS by C.L. Taylor is my favourite book from this author so far. Three strangers who have their own lives and problems find themselves joined together under very strange and disturbing circumstances. Ursula's life altered forever a long time ago when a tragedy changed her irrevocably. Now she is renting a room in a stranger's house, delivering packages for a living, and doing the odd spot of kleptomania to help keep her sane. Alice is finally ready to find love again but blind dates are definitely not what they are cracked up to be. When she meets Simon things finally appear to be looking up but someone desperately wants her to stay away from him. And then there is Gareth who is struggling to care for his mother who has dementia and has to solve the puzzle of postcards from his father who disappeared years ago, all while keeping his job and stopping a certain religious man from stealing his mother's money. Three completely separate people who will need to stick together to make sure that they all survive. The plot of this story is simply superb and I don't want to say too much but trust me, this is a must-read. The three main characters are well developed and likeable in their own ways so I really cared about them throughout and desperately wanted to figure out what was going on, for their sakes as well as my own. The tension is perfectly pitched and there is never a dull moment in STRANGERS by C. L. Taylor and I cannot wait for Cally's next masterpiece. An excellent story by an excellent author. AUTHOR BIO C.L. Taylor is an award winning Sunday Times bestselling author of seven gripping psychological thrillers including SLEEP, a Richard and Judy Book Club pick for autumn 2019. ABOUT THIS BOOK 1840: twenty three years after the death of her famous sister Jane, Cassandra Austen returns to the village of Kintbury, and the home of her family’s friends, the Fowles. She knows that, in some dusty corner of the sprawling vicarage, there is a cache of family letters which hold secrets she is desperate should not be revealed. As Cassandra recalls her youth and her relationship with her brilliant yet complex sister, she pieces together buried truths about Jane’s history, and her own. And she faces a stark choice: should she act to protect Jane’s reputation? Or leave the contents of the letters to go unguarded into posterity … MY REVIEW I have loved Jane Austen's novels since I was a young girl so to step back into that period of time and read about the Austen sisters themselves was a true joy. Over twenty years since her sister Jane has passed and Cassandra finds herself uprooting her life to return to the Fowles house which stirs up many memories. The current occupants are preparing to leave so Cassandra is there on a single mission - to find the family letters that are hidden there. Family letters that could change so much if they were to become public knowledge. And as Cassandra settles down to her task, an entire vibrant past is brought to light as we experience what life living as an Austen was truly like. The setting, the prose, everything felt like an Austen novel which made this story all the more special. Cassandra is a wonderful character and learning more about her and the Austen family was fascinating. There are plenty of interesting characters along the way - some comedic, some sorrowful, and some simply vindictive - and I fell back in time effortlessly as I turned each page. MISS AUSTEN by Gill Hornby is a must for all Austen fans but also for historical fiction fans in general, as it is superb from beginning to end. I look forward to reading more from Gill Hornby. AUTHOR BIO Gill Hornby is the author of the novels The Hive and All Together Now, as well as The Story of Jane Austen, a biography of Austen for young readers. She lives in Kintbury, Berkshire, with her husband and their four children. For more information: Twitter - twitter.com/GillHornby Facebook - www.facebook.com/GillHornbyAuthor/ |
