This is where Grace meets Tom in the Grave Yard after she found out about the murder, and wanted to look into his eyes before deciding what to do next: Grace sat on the suitcase and waited. After about an hour, Grace heard her name being called in a whisper. “Mater, mater.” Grace stood up out of the darkness and held her arms open. Tom immediately ran to her embrace, and sobbed into her shoulder. Tom clung to her in such desperation he made her heart weep. After a time Grace held him at arm’s length, and asked him, “Did you do it?” Tom looked straight into her eyes and said, “No, mother, I promise,” which was all the confirmation she needed. They both sat on the ground huddled together, whispering; Tom explained that he and Sally had argued after school. Some of the kids were going to the park to drink and smoke and fool around. Tom was trying to get Sally not to go, as she was getting a reputation at school for being a slut. Tom had punched a few boys over certain comments they had made about Sally, but he realised he could not fight the whole school over her. Tom tried to appeal to her better nature to stop, but Sally had laughed in his face, and Tom angrily grabbed her arm which Sally shrugged off. Sally then ran, saying, “I hate you, Tom Backer.” Shocked, finally Tom ran after her up to the end of Brick Lane where she disappeared from view; once Tom had lost sight of her, Tom then went back to school to see Mr Douglas. Grace explained all that had happened since he had run. Tom said, “I just panicked, as everyone was pointing and calling me a murder, so I ran. You know me, mother, I would never have hurt Sally.” Grace told Tom about the police coming to the house and she thought they were watching it, waiting for him to return. So London was no longer safe for him. Grace took out the brown envelope and gave it to him, and said, “This is all I have; use it well.” Passing him the suitcase, Grace said, “Go to the docks, pier eleven. There is a merchant ship hauling coal called the Red Star, bound for Odessa in Russia. Ask for the captain, Ivor Sharapova. He is expecting you.” Tom wondered how his mother had managed all of this in such a short time, but knowing she would not tell, he knew he would be eternally grateful to her. They hugged for what seemed like an eternity, finally breaking and looking deep into each other’s eyes; both wondering if this was their last meeting ever. Grace kissed him on the cheek and pushed Tom towards the way he came, and said, “Go, go now and don’t look back, remember I will always love you.” Tom turned and said, “Thank you, mother,” before disappearing into the darkness. REVIEW From the beginning of this novel, the author managed to grab my attention and suck me into his story. Getting to know Grace Backer and learning about the loves and losses of her life, I quickly became attached to this strong, determined, independent woman who put others before herself, and would do anything to protect her boy. Tom is such a clever young man, but when he finds himself falsely accused of a horrific crime, his only chance of survival is to leave his mother and his home behind, and travel to Russia. Here we get to fall in love with Tom's character as he builds up his own family and business, and we get to understand the driving force that will impact every move of his future. Experiencing tragedy and loss, and with many secrets of his own, there is a parallel between Grace's past and Tom's present - loss, tragedy, and secrecy, even though their paths are very different. But as Tom arrives back in London to finish the job that he has started, will everything come full circle? Will Tom finally get the closure that he needs? Or will the secrets from the past destroy everything? FOR THE LOVE OF GRACE by Andy Blackman is a gripping, emotional, and hypnotic read. Overflowing with love, loss, tragedy, and vengeance, I found myself swept along in this dangerous adventure, and I could not put this book down until I reached the end. With unusual friendships, quirky and shady accomplices, and enemies around every corner, FOR THE LOVE OF GRACE by Andy Blackman is an addictive read, and I really cannot wait to read more from this author.
