Then you'll love Sharon Thompson's unmissable debut. Peggy Bowden has not had an easy life. As a teenager, her mother was committed to an asylum and then a local priest forced her into an abusive marriage. But when her husband dies in an accident Peggy sees an opportunity to start again and trains as a midwife. In 1950s Dublin it is not easy for a woman to make a living and Peggy sees a chance to start a business and soon a lucrative maternity home is up and running. But when Peggy realizes that the lack of birth control is an issue for women, she uses their plight as a way to make more money. Very soon Peggy is on the wrong side of the law. What makes a woman decide to walk down a dark path? Can Peggy ever get back on the straight and narrow? Or will she have to pay for her crimes? Set against the backdrop of Ireland in the 1950’s The Abandoned tells the story of one woman’s fight for survival and her journey into the underbelly of a dangerous criminal world. MY REVIEW Where do I start with THE ABANDONED by Sharon Thompson? Gripping, emotive, raw, and compelling are just some of the adjectives I could use to describe this stunning debut that will take your breath away. Peggy Bowden has had to become tough in order to survive life. So when she finds herself in Dublin in the 1950s and spots the opportunity to set herself up in business, there is nothing that will stop her. But as she begins to help women in ways that went against the religion and the law in Ireland, Peggy will soon find herself cast among the criminal underworld. Is she really tough enough to survive? This is not an action-packed, psychological thriller, but rather a gritty and destructive tale of a woman who will do what she must, and the twists and turns of this story will honestly have your heart in your throat. Peggy is such a detailed, excellently portrayed character and is unusual in that you probably won't like her, you probably won't agree with half of what she does, but you will respect her for what she has overcome and her uncanny ability to pick herself up and move forward. You can never condemn her as you read her story. THE ABANDONED by Sharon Thompson will make you uncomfortable, it will make you emotional, and it will make you think. And in the year when Irish women will hopefully get the chance to be heard in a referendum, it is a timely read. THE ABANDONED by Sharon Thompson is an exquisite debut that simply must be read to be believed, and I cannot wait for more from the talented Sharon Thompson (and it wouldn't surprise me at all if we were to see it on our tv screens someday soon). ABOUT THIS BOOK Set in 1980’s London, Helen Bartlett, a popular TV news presenter and Sam Aziz, a glamorous middle-eastern cardiac surgeon, meet on a live programme. They dislike each other on sight, and the interview is a disaster. But that is not the end of their story because later that evening, they find themselves at the same dinner party. Over the weeks, hostility morphs into passion, and soon they fall desperately in love. Both are looking for the right partner with whom to settle down and produce a family. They seem made for each other; they delight in the joy that they have found, and plan to marry. But then, the differences in their cultural backgrounds start to manifest themselves. And a debt of honour that Sam cannot ignore returns to haunt him. Struggling with their torment, while she is so much in the public eye and he is performing life-saving surgery on a daily basis, places them under intolerable strain. Must they relinquish the most magical relationship either of them has ever known? Can they find a way out of their dilemmas? Or do they have to accept that no matter how modern we are, we cannot fly in the face of the traditions that served, and shaped us, for centuries? MY REVIEW IN HONOUR BOUND by Christine Webber is an emotional rollercoaster as we follow the love story of two engaging characters who struggle to balance their love against cultural traditions. Set in the 1980's we meet Helen and Sam who dislike each other on sight but as fate throws them into each other's paths, their feelings soon change and an all-consuming passion for each other develops. What should be a straight-forward love story becomes everything but. With the world watching their relationship and the collision of two different cultures with different expectations and demands, the strain soon begins to take its toll. Will they be able to overcome it all and be together? Very character-centred, IN HONOUR BOUND by Christine Webber, really gets to the heart of both Helen and Sam and makes it so easy for the reader to become instantly connected to their story. The 1980s blasts to life among the pages and definitely adds a nostalgic element to the story, although some of the less likeable elements from that time are also evident too. IN HONOUR BOUND by Christine Webber is an engrossing story brimming with feeling and I highly recommend it to all fiction fans. AUTHOR BIO After a break of 29 years to write over a dozen non-fiction titles, Christine Webber returned to writing fiction in 2016. The result was a novel called 'Who'd Have Thought It?' which is a romantic comedy about the change and challenges we encounter in mid-life. 'Who'd Have Thought It?' is also available as an audio book - both in digital and CD format. Her subsequent novel, 'It's Who We Are', further explores the theme of the turbulence of mid-life. But it is also about the importance of friendships, particularly as we get older, and concerns the secrets in families that can force us to look at our own identities. 'In Honour Bound' is a different book altogether. Set in the mid-'80s, it is a story of passion between two people who come from completely different backgrounds - and how the pull of the past can threaten the present. Publication date: 6.11.18 Christine is a former singer, TV presenter, agony aunt, columnist and Harley Street psychotherapist. Nowadays she is focusing on fiction - though she still broadcasts regularly. For more information: Website - www.christinewebber.com Twitter - twitter.com/1chriswebber |
