ABOUT THIS BOOK

There's a killer behind and trouble ahead

The Halfway Inn is closed to customers, side-lined by a bypass, deep in the inhospitable countryside. One winter's night, deep in snow, Lee, a student hitching home for Christmas, and Becca, a local nurse, end up knocking on the door as the blizzard takes hold.

But are they the first to arrive? Why is the landlord less than pleased to see them? And what is his elderly father, upstairs in bed immobilised by a stroke, trying so hard to tell them?

At the local police station PC Lissa Lloyd is holding the fort while the rest of her team share in the rare excitement of a brutal murder at an isolated farmhouse. A dangerous fugitive is on the run - but how can Lissa make a name for herself if she's stuck at her desk? When a call comes in saying the nurse is missing she jumps at the chance to escape the boredom and heads out into the snow.

The strangers at Halfway wait out the storm but soon realise they might have been safer on the road, especially when Lee finds something interesting in the cellar - which is nowhere near as interesting as what's under the old man's bed. It seems not all the travellers will make it home for Christmas... and if everyone is lying, then who do you trust?

MY REVIEW

I don't know about you but I have often wondered when I was driving somewhere new, what I would do if my car broke down late at night in an unfamiliar place. Well after reading this novel, that thought doesn't even bear thinking about and I am giving up driving (and I'm only half joking!).

In a secluded spot called The Halfway Inn, strangers take refuge on a cold winter's night but what should be a safe haven in the dark becomes anything but. Will they make it out alive? And who is the killer lurking in the shadows?

Intriguing, dark, and with plenty of twists along the way, HALFWAY by B.E. Jones is a fascinating read with plenty going for it. While I have to say that it is a little slow to get into the action, it wasn't long before I was fully engrossed and eager to find out exactly what was going on. Very atmospheric, HALFWAY by B.E. Jones is a compelling thriller and I look forward to reading more from this author.

ABOUT THIS BOOK

It’s Christmas, and for the first time in years the entire Birch family will be under one roof. Even Emma and Andrew’s elder daughter—who is usually off saving the world—will be joining them at Weyfield Hall, their aging country estate. But Olivia, a doctor, is only coming home because she has to. Having just returned from treating an epidemic abroad, she’s been told she must stay in quarantine for a week…and so too should her family.

For the next seven days, the Birches are locked down, cut off from the rest of humanity—and even decent Wi-Fi—and forced into each other’s orbits. Younger, unabashedly frivolous daughter Phoebe is fixated on her upcoming wedding, while Olivia deals with the culture shock of being immersed in first-world problems.

As Andrew sequesters himself in his study writing scathing restaurant reviews and remembering his glory days as a war correspondent, Emma hides a secret that will turn the whole family upside down.

In close proximity, not much can stay hidden for long, and as revelations and long-held tensions come to light, nothing is more shocking than the unexpected guest who’s about to arrive…

MY REVIEW

SEVEN DAYS OF US by Francesca Hornak is an emotional and engrossing story of messy family relationships and I was hooked from the very first page.

It is the first Christmas that the Birch family are all spending together in their country home in many years. Emma is excited to have her daughters together for once and is determined to make this Christmas as perfect as she can even if it means hiding a secret from everyone. Andrew loves his daughters but Phoebe has always been his favourite as he has always struggled to connect with Olivia but when an email threatens to shatter everyone's opinion of him will he face it head on or hide? Phoebe is newly engaged and just wants everything to be perfect and she doesn't need her do-gooder sister raining on her parade all over the festive season. Olivia is just back from treating Haag in Liberia and must endure the one week quarantine at home with her family whom she feels no connection with. Plus she has to be away from the love of her life - a relationship that goes against all of the rules. How will she survive? And when their doorbell rings, a stranger may just change each of their lives forever.

Compelling and completely unputdownable, SEVEN DAYS OF US by Francesca Hornak is a unique gem that packs an emotional punch. There is so much depth and history to these characters and Olivia and Emma really shone for me in this book. The setting is perfect and there was nothing that didn't work for me. There is tragedy, sadness, new beginnings and so much more nestled among the pages of SEVEN DAYS OF US and the message that no matter how complicated and messy family life can be, family will always be family even if they can get lost along the way.

SEVEN DAYS OF US by Francesca Hornak is a must-read for contemporary fiction fans and it is definitely on my list of top books for 2018!

ABOUT THIS BOOK

Maggie Coates is frustrated. Her longterm boyfriend, Dirk, recently moved to London to take a job she fears puts him out of her league. Despite the assurances of her best friend Renee, Maggie is convinced Dirk is slowly drifting away. All Maggie wants is to get married and settle down, but maybe Dirk has other ideas.

Convinced by Renee to make one last throw of the dice, Maggie books a romantic holiday for two in the quaint Scottish village of Hollydell. But will Dirk show up?

And if he doesn't, what if there is a perfect man waiting for her among the Christmas magic of Hollydell's snow-laden streets? What if Henry, the humble reindeer farmer with the kind smile, turns out to be the man of Maggie's dreams?

MY REVIEW

A sweet, Christmas story, I'M GLAD I FOUND YOU by CP Ward is like something you would expect to see on the Hallmark channel only in book form.

Maggie Coates feels like she has lost her boyfriend ever since he got a big job in the city and they embarked on a long-distance relationship. She wants to get married but feels like Dirk is slipping away from her, especially since he cheated on her before. Determined to give it one more chance, Maggie books a Christmas break in a remote part of Scotland, so remote that Maggie isn't even sure it exists, hoping to reconnect. But when Dirk doesn't show up, Maggie throws herself into the festive spirit in what seems to be the most welcoming and magical place she has ever been. As Maggie makes new friends and takes the advice of her oldest friend, Maggie soon begins to rethink her life and her relationship. But will Dirk show up and redeem himself or is there another special someone who may just be perfect for her?

While Maggie is likeable (if a little naive and annoying at times) and the community of Hollydell completely loveable, it is the setting itself that is the real winner in I'M GLAD I FOUND YOU by CP Ward. The author paints a magical picture that will transport you to a village that is my dream place to live - cosy cottages and cafes, beautiful woodlands, and that extra dash of special something. There is drama, misunderstandings, snowflakes, and friendship in I'M GLAD I FOUND YOU by CP Ward and is sure to entertain readers who enjoy a sweet romance.

ABOUT THIS BOOK

There’s a stranger in your house…

When her stepmother dies unexpectedly, Caro returns to her childhood home in Derbyshire. She hadn’t seen Elizabeth in years, but the remote farmhouse offers refuge from a bad relationship, and a chance to start again.

But going through Elizabeth’s belongings unearths memories Caro would rather stay buried. In particular, the story her stepmother would tell her, about two little girls and the terrible thing they do.

As heavy snow traps Caro in the village, where her neighbours stare and whisper, Caro is forced to question why Elizabeth hated her so much, and what she was hiding. But does she really want to uncover the truth?

MY REVIEW

Haunting, disturbing, and darkly atmospheric CUCKOO by Sophie Draper is a thriller with a mysterious edge.

When Caro's stepmother suddenly dies it brings Caro back in touch with the sister who abandoned her years ago and she soon finds herself returning to her remote childhood home to focus on her illustrations. But Caro is still haunted by her past and being in this house only makes it worse. As she begins to go through the old house, memories and old stories start to come alive and Caro cannot help but wonder why her stepmother hated her so much and why the local villagers feel the same way towards her. She wants to know the truth but is she prepared for it?

CUCKOO by Sophie Draper is a very well-written thriller with a unique edge and I really enjoyed it. It is a slow=paced story so if you are looking for a fast, energetic pace then this one may not be for you. There are so many elements that come together to work really well in this plot and there were times where I couldn't figure out where it was going but was intrigued by the result.

CUCKOO by Sophie Draper is a fascinating debut and I look forward to reading more from this author.

ABOUT THIS BOOK

Holly is looking for a change and even though not everyone agrees with her career choices, she’s determined there’s more to this life than the long hours she works as an editor in New York City. What she doesn’t expect is to meet Mitch, a recluse who’s hiding more than she realises.

Mitch spends his days hidden away in a little log cabin in the woods out in Inglenook Falls where he owns a Christmas tree farm. He speaks to people only when and if it’s necessary, so when Holly falls into his life, he’s not sure how to react. All he knows is that something needs to change if he ever wants to get his life back on track.

Along with friends Cleo and Darcy, Holly is determined to bring joy back to Mitch’s life, but will he appreciate their interference? And when a business proposition throws everything up in the air, will it do more harm than good and ruin lives forever?

Both Holly and Mitch must learn that on the surface people aren’t always what they seem…but if you dig a little deeper, they can take you by surprise.

MY REVIEW

Engaging, heartwarming and brimming with depth and emotion, CHRISTMAS MIRACLES AT THE LITTLE LOG CABIN by Helen J. Rolfe is a wonderful story with something for everyone this festive season.

When Holly takes a chance and leaves her secure job in the city to set up as a freelancer, she never imagined the changes it would bring to her life. Spending the holidays in Inglenook Falls for work, she gets to reconnect with her friends and spend time with her boyfriend who is in charge of a hotel there. But when she stumbles across an old log cabin in the woods and meets recluse, Mitch, Holly cannot simply walk away from him. Uncovering his past, Holly is determined to help him and bring some festive cheer back into his life but life is never clear-cut. And when a business choice leads to an awful misunderstanding, will Holly and Mitch be able to find the magic in the air before it is too late?

Dealing with plenty of tough issues in a beautiful and sensitive way, CHRISTMAS AT THE LITTLE LOG CABIN by Helen J. Rolfe is so much more than a festive romance. The characters have many sides to them and it was a joy to chisel beneath their facades and get to know the real them. There is plenty of drama, friendship, community spirit, and misunderstandings to keep you hooked and I thoroughly enjoyed this book from start to finish.

ABOUT THIS BOOK

Two sparkling Christmas reads from the multi-million selling ultimate Queen of Romance!

When it comes to women Prince Bennett has always enjoyed a challenge. So after meeting the quiet and beautiful Lady Hannah Rothschild the dashing prince cannot rest until he breaks through her careful reserve. Love has always been a game to Bennett but with this elusive, mysterious woman he discovers his heart is on the line and he’s playing for keeps…

Her legacy has been as much a curse as a blessing so Anastasia Donovan has learned to keep it hidden but when single dad Boone Sawyer swept into her heart she longed to reveal everything despite her fear of the consequences. Then fate stepped in.

MY REVIEW

When it comes to romance and getting lost in a story, Nora Roberts is one of my go-to authors as she always hits the mark perfectly, and THE MAGIC OF CHRISTMAS is no different as I completely fell in love with both stories and didn't come up for air until I had turned the last page.

First up is The Playboy Prince where we are transported to a world of royalty and wealth but also a place where family is most important. When Lady Hannah Rothschild arrives to be a companion for his beloved sister-in-law, Prince Bennett is prepared to be charming and kind but there is something about the quiet and reserved Hannah that gets under his skin. And when danger surrounds those he loves, Bennett will do what he must to protect his own. But is Hannah exactly who she says she is?

The second story in this book is Charmed and has a magical element that will take your breath away. Anastasia Donovan is content with her life and her home but is determined that she will never risk her heart again ...not after the last disaster. But when her new neighbour and his adorable little girl move in next door, they soon worm their way into her life and her heart. But will Boone be able to accept every part of Anastasia's life?

Compelling, heartwarming, sultry, and completely unputdownable, THE MAGIC OF CHRISTMAS by Nora Roberts is everything you want in a romance and so much more. The characters are warm and engaging, and Nora Roberts has a truly unique style that sucks you into the story immediately and effortlessly.  A must-read collection for every romance fan.

ABOUT THIS BOOK

79-year-old Gloria Frensham is a hoarder. She lives amongst piles of magazines, squashed cardboard boxes, surplus carpet rolls, heaps of towels and knick-knacks littering the stairs. She hasn’t left her home for years, until a loud bang and a sudden smell of singeing sets in motion Gloria’s unwilling exodus from her home…

That day is the start of a journey that will never return Gloria back to her beloved, hoarded possessions, nor to her son’s house to live. For it is the start of her journey to discover life again – and she’s going to make some good friends and defiant decisions along the way, with just one very small suitcase in tow…

MY REVIEW

THE WOMAN WHO KEPT EVERYTHING by Jane Gilley is an emotional story that spreads the message that life can be short and to live each day to the max.

Gloria Frensham is 79 years young and is content living in her house surrounded by all of her belongings. She would love for her son to visit her more and she would love to get to know her grandchildren whom she hasn't seen for ten years but she realises that this is unlikely to happen. She has her stuff and her close friend and that is enough.
But when a small accident leads to her son putting her into a nursing home, it will spark a chain of events that will change Gloria's life forever. For as her son begins to throw away everything that has kept her sane, Gloria knows that there is only one thing she can do - run away. And so begins the adventure of a lifetime.

THE WOMAN WHO KEPT EVERYTHING by Jane Gilley is a compelling and heartwarming story that at times will bring a tear to your eye, but also inspire you to grab a hold of life and take chances. Gloria is a wonderful character and as I got to learn about her past and be there for her present, I felt a real connection to her. In our society, the elderly are often overlooked or dismissed and this story really showed how wrong a judgement that can be.

There are ups and downs, friendship and a fighting spirit all combining together in THE WOMAN WHO KEPT EVERYTHING and I highly recommend it.

ABOUT THIS BOOK

Fifteen years ago, Lilith Wade was arrested for the brutal murder of six women. After a death row conviction and media frenzy, her thirty-year-old daughter Edie is a recovering alcoholic with a deadend city job, just trying to survive out of the spotlight.

Edie also has a disturbing secret: a growing obsession with the families of Lilith’s victims. She’s desperate to discover how they’ve managed—or failed—to move on, and whether they’ve fared better than her. She’s been careful to keep her distance, until the day one of them is found murdered and she quickly becomes the prime suspect. Edie remembers nothing of the night of the death, and must get to the truth before the police—or the real killer—find her.

MY REVIEW

If you are looking for a dark and compelling thriller this Winter, then look no further than IN HER BONES by Kate Moretti.

When Edie's mother is arrested and convicted for the murder of six women, Edie's life changes indescribably. Working in a dead-end job while trying to stay sober and disappear from the limelight is the most she can hope for. But Edie has a burning need to discover if her mother's victim's families are coping and if it was possible for them to move on. But Edie's secret to observe could become far more dangerous when Edie finds herself the main suspect when one of these people is found murdered. Can Edie uncover the truth before it is too late?

Disturbing, gripping, and very twisted at times, IN HER BONES by Kate Moretti is a crime fiction novel that will have you sharpening your detective skills as you try to unlock the truth. The plot is well-paced with plenty of ups and downs throughout and Edie was a fascinating character that intrigued me from the very beginning.

IN HER BONES by Kate Moretti is a thought-provoking and ominous thriller that is sure to please crime fiction fans everywhere.
