ABOUT THIS BOOK Let the shenanigans begin at the Best Boomerville Hotel … Jo Docherty and Hattie Contaldo have a vision – a holiday retreat in the heart of the Lake District exclusively for guests of ‘a certain age’ wishing to stimulate both mind and body with new creative experiences. One hotel refurbishment later and the Best Boomerville Hotel is open for business! Perhaps not surprisingly Boomerville attracts more than its fair share of eccentric clientele: there’s fun-loving Sir Henry Mulberry and his brother Hugo; Lucinda Brown, an impoverished artist with more ego than talent; Andy Mack, a charming Porsche-driving James Bond lookalike, as well as Kate Simmons, a woman who made her fortune from an internet dating agency but still hasn’t found ‘the One’ herself. With such an array of colourful individuals there’s bound to be laughs aplenty, but could there be tears and heartbreak too and will the residents get more than they bargained for at Boomerville? MY REVIEW With loveable, quirky characters and plenty of action along the way, THE BEST BOOMERVILLE HOTEL by Caroline James is a book that will warm your heart and make you smile. Boomerville is a stunning hotel that specialises in providing everything a person of a certain age could require - from writing classes to life coaching and everything in between, this hotel does it. From a handsome widower to an eccentric writer, to a woman searching to find herself and possibly romance along the way, Boomerville Hotel welcomes them all with open arms, and as this large and luminous group come together it is no surprise when sparks begin to fly! From the beginning, I was pulled into this story and I connected with the characters almost instantly and really wanted to see how life would turn out for each and every one of them. There are moments of pure laughter and some more sombre moments too, and the author has such a wonderful way with descriptions that the hotel and its guests really come alive in your mind as we get to know each and every story. THE BEST BOOMERVILLE HOTEL by Caroline James has something for everyone and is the perfect read to warm your heart as the cold evenings draw in. Definitely a must for contemporary fiction fans everywhere. AUTHOR BIO Caroline's latest novel, The Best Boomerville Hotel is published by Ruby Fiction and is being described as 'Britain's answer to the Marigold Hotel, fabulous!' Caroline James was born in Cheshire and wanted to be a writer from an early age. She trained, however, in the catering trade and worked and travelled both at home and abroad. Caroline's debut novel, Coffee, Tea, The Gypsy & Me shot to #3 on Amazon and was Ebook of the Week in The Sun newspaper. Her second novel, Coffee Tea The Chef & Me has been described as wickedly funny: 'AbFab meets MasterChef in a Soap…' Coffee Tea The Caribbean & Me was a Finalist at The Write Stuff, London Book Fair 2015 and the judge’s comments included: “Caroline is a natural story-teller with a gift for humour in her writing.” The book is an amazon best-seller and 'Top Recommended Read - Thomson Holidays InFlight Magazine 2017' Jungle Rock has been described as 'fabulously funny - a perfect feel-good read'. Caroline has owned and run many catering related businesses and cookery is a passion alongside her writing, combining the two with her love of the hospitality industry and romantic fiction. She has published short stories and is a member of the RNA. Caroline writes articles on food and celebrity based interviews and is Feature Editor for a lifestyle magazine. When she's not writing, Caroline can generally be found with her nose in a book and her hand in a box of chocolates, she also likes to climb mountains and contemplate life. I am lucky enough to have a guest post from the author himself which you can read further on, so thank you so much J D Fennell! ABOUT THIS BOOK Will starling has been drafted into the SOE, joining forces with the French Resistance, but his memory is fractured and only occasional flashbacks reveal fragments of his past. When his mission is compromised, Will suspects that he’s been betrayed. Back in London he hears that VIPER are developing a deadly weapon. As he and MI5 agent Anna Wilder set out to destroy it, their every move is anticipated by their enemies. While Will fights to prevent genocide, his sister, Rose, has become the key to VIPER’s future plans and is drugged to dull her kinetic powers. But Rose faces danger from an unexpected enemy and her time is running out. MY REVIEW Continuing the adventure, SLEEPER: THE RED STORM by J D Fennell swept me up into a dangerous whirlwind with characters that truly got under my skin. Will Starling, now eighteen years old, is still determined to uncover the truth about his past and find his sister, Rose. Working with MI5, Will is battling enemies on every front, from Nazis to the evil Viper organisation who are developing a deadly weapon that would destroy the world as we know it. But who can Will really trust and will he survive long enough to protect his sister and discover the truth about his family? Gripping, hypnotic, and dangerously exciting SLEEPER: THE RED STORM by J D Fennell is a spy thriller with a difference, perfectly combining a James Bond feel with paranormal elements to keep you hooked from the very beginning. This is the second book in this series and I highly recommend you read the series from the beginning (Sleeper) to get the most from these characters and to experience the plot as a whole. Reading this book kept my nerves tingling as Will raced against time to stop his enemies and I felt invigorated and part of the drama as I turned each page. SLEEPER: THE RED STORM by J D Fennell is an exhilarating story with a main character that is flawed, dangerous, and utterly captivating, and I cannot wait for more from this extremely talented author. This book is a must for thriller and spy fans everywhere. GUESTPOST Getting published - fluke or luck? I began writing at the age of eleven. It was something I started in school lessons and had thoroughly enjoyed. I continued in private at home all through my teens and into my twenties. I was always a voracious reader and found my heroes in authors and their fictional creations. I dreamt about being an author. It was all I ever wanted. Back then I had no idea of the amount of work and personal sacrifice that being a writer would entail. In fact, it still surprises me today. As my twenties passed into thirties, my writing and dreams of being an author diminished. And then, as if in a blink of an eye, I woke up in my forties with the feeling that something was missing. I had still thought about being a writer, but it was an ambition that just seemed so impossible. Or was it? Something that had been sleeping inside me began to waken once more. The more I thought about writing, the more fired up I became. I started writing again. I began taking classes to learn a bit more about the craft and to also connect with other writers (always a good tactic). Some classes were good, some not so good. I was learning a little but wanted to know more. In 2011, I started a Masters in Creative Writing at the University of Sussex. This was a wonderful time. It was fun deconstructing novels, debating and writing essays on plot, suspense, dialogue, location, character, point of view, and all that stuff writers need to know about. I loved it. I really did! I also learned academic discipline and how to fit writing in around my full-time job. And so, with a completed MS, I was ready to submit to agents. Arguably, securing an agent is the toughest challenge for writers following the traditional publishing route. I submitted to many agents only to receive several rejections, or, in most cases nothing at all. Zero. Zilch. I was disheartened but was not prepared to give up. The truth was I was not afraid of failing and was determined to carry on with a new book, if I had to. I started doing the usual circuit of writing festivals, pitching my book and meeting agents and publishers. I pitched to an agent from one of the large established literary agencies. I worked with that agent for a period only to eventually be rejected. Down, but not beaten, I returned to the drawing board, convinced that I could make my book better and hook someone else’s interest. So, I rewrote the entire book, changing the title, the story, the protagonist’s drive and gave him a darker purpose. I worked hard on problem areas and finished the new version almost a year later. I did the rounds once more and by sheer fluke, or was it luck, I managed to get a spot on a writing festival, where I pitched Sleeper to super-agent, David H Headley. He read the first few chapters, liked them and asked to see the rest. This was unexpected. He read the remainder and asked to meet me. We chatted about Sleeper and my writing ambitions. By the end of the meeting, to my utter shock, he offered me representation. And so almost a year later, after further rewrites, Sleeper was published. My second book, Sleeper: The Red Storm, came out in hardback earlier this year. The paperback is available on October 25th. Writing that book was one of the most difficult challenges of my life. There was a lot to live up to and unlike my first book I had a tight deadline. Getting published is a difficult process and luck plays a big part. As a writer you must hold your nerve, believe in yourself and write the best possible book you can. Also, be prepared to redraft and edit over and over again. Getting an agent is one thing. Getting a publishing deal is a whole different ball game. And that is only the beginning. ABOUT THIS BOOK She’s chasing a killer. He’s watching her every move. He hides in the shadows, waiting for the perfect moment. Each kill is calculated, planned and executed like clockwork. Struggling to balance her personal and professional life, young DS Becca Vincent has landed the biggest case of her career—and she knows that it will make or break her. But she can’t catch the culprit alone. Together with facial recognition expert Joe Russell, she strives to get a lead on the elusive murderer, who is always one step ahead of them. Time is not on their side. The body count is rising, and the attacks are striking closer and closer to home. Can Becca and Joe uncover the connection between the murders before the killer strikes the last name from his list? MY REVIEW Compelling, fresh, and utterly disturbing, HER LAST MOVE by John Marrs is everything I didn't know I wanted in a book and completely unputdownable. DS Becca Vincent is juggling her career, which seems to have stalled and being a good mother which she always feels she is failing at. When a murder case falls into her lap, Becca is determined to show her boss what she can do and when it becomes obvious that they have a serial killer on the loose, Becca will join forces with Joe Russell, a super-recogniser, to take this monster down. But the monster always seems to be one step ahead of the game, methodical and sadistic and he has his eyes set closer to home than Becca could ever imagine. This book scared the living bejaysus out of me because it was realistic with characters that you could meet at any time and be completely oblivious to the horror hiding behind a friendly smile. The pace is perfect with enough detail to really hook you in without overdoing it, and I loved the super-recogniser aspect of the story which takes the old phrase 'I never forget a face' to a whole new level. HER LAST MOVE by John Marrs is a tense, dark, and absorbing thriller that will take you by surprise at many points of the story and leave you wanting more. I don't think this is the beginning of a new series but I would love it if it was! A must-read for crime fiction, psychological thriller, and thriller fans alike. AUTHOR BIO John Marrs is the author of The One, The Good Samaritan, When You Disappeared, and Welcome to Wherever You Are. ABOUT THIS BOOK Gray Everett has a heart of gold but that doesn't mean he believes in the magic of Christmas. He's got plenty else to worry about this holiday season, what with keeping his cattle ranch in the family and out of the hands of hungry real-estate investors looking to make a down-and-dirty deal. That, plus being a parent to his young and motherless daughter, equals a man who will not rest until he achieves his mission. Now, all Gray needs is the help of his lifelong neighbor. . .who happens to have grown into a lovely, spirited woman. For Abby Douglas, the chance to join forces with Gray is nothing less than a Christmas miracle. Much as the down-to-earth farmer's daughter has tried to deny it, Abby's been in love with stern, smoking-hot Gray her whole life. So when Gray proposes a marriage of convenience as a way to combine land--and work together toward a common cause—Abby can't refuse. But how can she convince Gray that sometimes life offers a man a second chance for a reason. . .and that their growing trust and mutual passion may be leading to true and lasting love? MY REVIEW A TRUE COWBOY CHRISTMAS by Caitlin Crews is a wonderful story about realising your worth and not letting the past dictate your future. When Gray Everett buries his drunk and abusive father, it makes him realise that he wants more for his daughter and for the future. The land calls to him and is in his blood but he needs a sensible, uncomplicated woman who can help make them more of a family. He needs a straightforward relationship that doesn't involve complicated feelings of love which Gray knows that he is incapable of feeling. So when he looks up to see his neighbour Abby Douglas standing there, it seems like a sign. Abby Douglas has loved Gray since she was a little girl. Abandoned and verbally abused by a mother who flits in and out of her life, Abby has come to depend only on herself and her beloved grandmother and avoids being fodder for the town gossips by being as honest and kind as she can and when Gray offers her a marriage of convenience she knows that she will accept. But can she survive this relationship without getting her heart broken? Emotional, sweet, sexy, and heartwarming are all words that I would use to describe A TRUE COWBOY CHRISTMAS by Caitlin Crews. I loved Abby's character and it broke my heart how she views herself through her mother's cruel words. Watching her blossom into an even stronger version of herself was a joy. Gray is a strong man who has dealt with a lot in his life and I loved watching the walls that he had built so high around him slowly chip away. The tension, drama, and misunderstandings throughout this book are compelling and there was never a dull moment from start to finish. A TRUE COWBOY CHRISTMAS by Caitlin Crews is a story about believing in yourself and ignoring those who want to take you down. It is a story of friendship, love, and the real meaning of family, and I highly recommend it to fiction fans the world over. AUTHOR BIO USA Today-bestselling, RITA-nominated, and critically-acclaimed author Caitlin Crews has written more than seventy-five books, including Frenemies, Princess from the Past, A Royal Without Rules, and Undone by the Sultan's Touch. She's won fans with her romance, Harlequin Presents, women's fiction, chick lit, and work-for-hire young adult novels, many of which she writes as Megan Crane (including the dystopian Viking romance Edge series). These days her focus is on contemporary romance in all its forms, from small town heat to international glamour, cowboys to bikers to military men and beyond. She's taught creative writing classes in places like UCLA Extension's prestigious Writers' Program, gives assorted workshops on occasion, and attempts to make use of the MA and PhD in English Literature she received from the University of York in York, England. She currently lives in the Pacific Northwest with a husband who draws comics and animation storyboards, and their menagerie of ridiculous animals.
