ABOUT THIS BOOK Here are two things I know about my mother: 1. She had dark hair, like mine. 2. She wasn’t very happy at the end. Anna has always believed that her mother, Debbie, died 30 years ago on the night she disappeared. But when her father gets a strange note, she realises that she’s never been told the full story of what happened that night on the cliff. Confused and upset, Anna turns to her husband Jack – but when she finds a love letter from another woman in his wallet, she realises there’s no-one left to help her, least of all her family. And then a body is found… MY REVIEW 11 MISSED CALLS by Elisabeth Carpenter is an evenly paced tale of loss, heartbreak, and family secrets that hooked my interest from the beginning. Anna has always searched for her missing mother in faces among the crowd, an act that has gotten her in trouble a few times, but married now with her own little girl, Anna is still struggling with the disappearance of her mother all those years ago when she was just a baby. The rest of her family seem happy to move on and forget about Debbie but Anna cannot let it go. She has to know what happened. So when her stepmother, Debbie's old friend, receives an email that appears to be from her mother, Anna jumps into investigation mode determined to uncover the truth. But the more Anna digs the more she realises that she never really heard the full chain of events leading up to Debbie's disappearance and she begins to fear what she might uncover. And when she finds a love letter in her husband's wallet, Anna realises that her mother may not be the only person she lost along the way ... I enjoyed the pace and plot of this novel and getting to know Anna and her family as each layer of their backgrounds unfolded, was intriguing. There were plenty of twists, misunderstandings, and dead ends along the way to keep you gripped. The story moves from Anna in the present day to Debbie in the month leading up to her disappearance and while both time frames were good, I preferred reading Anna's point of view more. The ending felt a little too rushed for me but overall, I found 11 MISSED CALLS by Elisabeth Carpenter to be a solid, easy read. AUTHOR BIO Elisabeth (Libby) Carpenter won a Northern Writers New Fiction Award (2016) and was longlisted for Yeovil Literary Prize (2015 & 2016) and MsLexia Women’s Novel award (2015). ABOUT THIS BOOK What if keeping your loved ones safe meant never seeing them again? Canada, present day When Martha’s beloved father dies, he leaves her two things: a mysterious stash of letters to an English woman called ‘Catkins’ and directions to a beach hut in the English seaside town of Wells-Next-The-Sea. Martha is at a painful crossroads in her own life, and seizes this chance for a trip to England – to discover more about her family’s past, and the identity of her father’s secret correspondent. Norfolk, 1940 Sylvia’s husband Howard has gone off to war, and she is struggling to raise her two children alone. Her only solace is her beach hut in Wells, and her friendship with Connie, a woman she meets on the beach. The two women form a bond that will last a lifetime, and Sylvia tells Connie something that no-one else knows: about a secret lover… and a child. But the tragedy of war brings heartbreaking choices. And a promise made between the two women will echo down the years, and could change everything for Martha… MY REVIEW Firstly I just have to say something about this stunning cover - it is quite possibly the prettiest book cover I have seen so far this year and really catches the eye. Now I can talk about this absolutely engrossing dual timeline novel that will capture your heart, body, and soul and take you on an emotional rollercoaster ride from start to finish. In the present day, Martha has just buried her father when she discovers a collection of letters to an English woman and the plans of a trip to the English seaside town of Wells. A little lost in her life, Martha impulsively decides to take this trip and uncover the mystery surrounding this relationship. The story moves from Martha's quest to Sylvia's story in England in the 1940s. Sylvia's part of the story ensnared my heart as love, loss, heartbreak, and strength take centre stage as the tragedy of war really hits home to the reader. Can Martha discover how it all links together and find hope for the future? The characters are full of depth and feeling and the reader cannot help be caught up in the drama of it all. I enjoyed following Martha as she tries to dig up the truth but my favourite parts of the story were those set in the 1940s with Sylvia. There was an added richness to these parts that made it come alive as I read and I couldn't put this book down. Be prepared to cry (just warning you now!) but also be prepared to smile at the strength, love, and determination that is shown throughout this story. THE LOST LETTERS by Sarah Mitchell is a moving, heartbreaking, loving story that will take your breath away and I highly recommend it to all fiction fans but especially those who love historical and World War II novels. AUTHOR BIO After graduating from Cambridge University, Sarah Mitchell practised as a barrister in London for 20 years, working in the field of human rights and European Law. She was tempted to write fiction for a long while and finally signed up for an introductory creative writing course with the Open University. Two years later she took a sabbatical from the bar to do an MA in Creative Writing at the UEA and has never looked back. THE LOST LETTERS is her first novel, inspired by a walk on the beach at Wells-next-the-Sea to calm her nerves before starting the MA, and the decision her grandparents almost made to evacuate her mother to Canada at the start of the Second World War. Sarah now lives back in Norfolk - where she grew up - with her husband and three almost-grown-up children, and combines writing with some legal work. ABOUT THIS BOOK Sometimes life just takes the biscuit … Abby Spencer knows she can come across as an airhead – she talks too much and is a bit of a klutz – but there’s more to her than that. Though she sacrificed her career to help raise her sisters, a job interview at biscuit company Crumbs could finally be her chance to shine. That’s until she hurries in late wearing a shirt covered in rusk crumbs, courtesy of her baby nephew, and trips over her handbag. Managing director Douglas Faulkner isn’t sure what to make of Abby Spencer with her Bambi eyes, tousled hair and ability to say more in the half-hour interview than he manages in a day. All he knows is she’s a breath of fresh air and could bring a new lease of life to the stale corporate world of Crumbs. To his life too, if he’d let her. But Doug’s harbouring a secret. He’s not the man she thinks he is. MY REVIEW Ok, everyone, you are going to have to bear with me as I try to convey just how much I adored this wonderful story. I read a lot and OH CRUMBS by Kathryn Freeman really does stand out for its engaging and loveable characters, its fresh plot, and for making me smile on a dull and gloomy evening in Ireland. Abby Spencer has looked after her family ever since her mum passed away when she was thirteen. While her dad worked long hours, Abby cared for her younger sisters and passed on the traditional university experience with her friends and enrolled in online college instead. She has always put her heart and soul into those she loves and when she gets a P.A. job for the Managing Director of Crumbs, a biscuit company, her family support her 100%. Juggling a new career and her family commitments would definitely be more than enough for most but when Abby begins to chip away at her reserved boss' hard exterior she finds a talented, kind, and completely sexy man underneath. But could anything really happen between two people that live worlds apart? Doug is shocked by his new P.A. Her openness, her compassion, and her sharp intelligence are all things that are lacking from this business and from his own life. But Doug knows that they can never be together, that the dark and harsh reality of his world which nobody really understands, should never touch the bright and beautiful light that is Abby and her family. But as they spend more time together, could he really let her walk away from him forever? This story will make you cry, make you laugh out loud, and make you swoon, and what more can you ask from a brilliant contemporary romance these days?! Abby is the best friend you always wanted and the way she loves is something to aspire to. I loved all of the characters in this story but Abby had to be my favourite, but it would be great to see how life turned out for her sisters so maybe a few more books about them please Kathryn? 😉 There is drama, secrets, family life, and love in all of its forms in OH CRUMBS by Kathryn Freeman and I cannot say enough how much I loved this marvellous book, so get clicking!! AUTHOR BIO I was born in Wallingford, England and have spent most of my life living in a village outside Windsor. A former pharmacist, former pharmaceutical industry employee I’m now a self-employed medical writer who also loves to write romance. Some days a racing heart is a medical condition, others it’s the reaction to a hunky hero… I’ve two teenage boys and a husband who asks every Valentine’s Day whether he has to bother buying a card again this year (yes, he does) so the romance in my life is all in my head. Then again, my husband’s unstinting support of my career change goes to prove that love isn't always about hearts and flowers - and heroes can come in many disguises For more information: Website - kathrynfreeman.co.uk Twitter - twitter.com/KathrynFreeman1 Facebook - www.facebook.com/kathrynfreeman/ DON'T FORGET TO CHECK OUT ALL OF THE OTHER STOPS ALONG THE WAY!!! ABOUT THIS BOOK Alvie Knightly is back . . . and she's hungover. When Alvie discovers that her hit man boyfriend has driven off with the Lamborghini and two million euros, she does what any heartbroken, deserted, amateur assassin would do - she drinks everything in the mini-bar and trashes her hotel room. And then she gets to work. A perilous cat-and-mouse game takes the pair across Rome, leaving a trail of collateral damage in their wake. But as she wholeheartedly embraces her dark side Alvie will have to figure out if Nino is her nemesis . . . or the only man bad enough to handle her. MY REVIEW Alvie Knightly is back with a bang and oh my, how I had missed this crazy character and her insane life. Alvie is hungover, broke, and infuriated and the cause of all of her problems has just driven off with her money in their Lamborghini. But like everything that has happened in her life so far, she refuses to sit idly by and be a victim and decides that tracking him down and taking back what is rightfully hers is the only course of action left open to her. From grenades to dead bodies, Alvie and her dangerous personality will take you to Italy where these unhinged characters will show you danger and drama like you have never seen before, all the while making you laugh out loud and connect with this mad adventure from cover to cover. Whether you love Alvie or hate Alvie, the one thing you will never be is bored with Alvie! BAD by Chloé Esposito is the second book in this series and while you definitely can read it as a standalone, I really urge you to buy both books so that you can really get to know these characters to their fullest (you won't regret it). I didn't think Mad (the first book in the series) could be topped but I was delightfully mistaken. The pace is energetic, the characters even more engaging and wild, and again Italy comes alive on the page in a very hypnotic and appealing way, and the dark humour that will make you laugh out loud is even sharper and more entertaining than before. BAD by Chloé Esposito is a corker of a novel and roll on book three!!! AUTHOR BIO Chloé Esposito is from Cheltenham and now lives in London. She has a BA and MA in English from Oxford University, where her dissertation focused on 19th-century feminist writers. She has been a senior management consultant, an English teacher at two of the UK's top private schools and a fashion stylist at Condé Nast. She is a graduate of the Faber Academy and is now writing full-time. ABOUT THIS BOOK Confronted by a restraining order and the threat of a lawsuit, failed journalist Leah Stevens needs to get out of Boston when she runs into an old friend, Emmy Grey, who has just left a troubled relationship. Emmy proposes they move to rural Pennsylvania, where Leah can get a teaching position and both women can start again. But their new start is threatened when a woman with an eerie resemblance to Leah is assaulted by the lake, and Emmy disappears days later. Determined to find Emmy, Leah cooperates with Kyle Donovan, a handsome young police officer on the case. As they investigate her friend’s life for clues, Leah begins to wonder: did she ever really know Emmy at all? With no friends, family, or a digital footprint, the police begin to suspect that there is no Emmy Grey. Soon Leah’s credibility is at stake, and she is forced to revisit her past: the article that ruined her career. To save herself, Leah must uncover the truth about Emmy Grey—and along the way, confront her old demons, find out who she can really trust, and clear her own name. Everyone in this rural Pennsylvanian town has something to hide—including Leah herself. How do you uncover the truth when you are busy hiding your own? MY REVIEW I don't know where I have been hibernating but I had never heard or read anything by Megan Miranda before I picked up THE PERFECT STRANGER but after finishing this twisted, compelling, and absolutely spine-tingling thriller, I am definitely going on a shopping spree for Megan Miranda's back catalogue. Leah Stevens briefly lived with Emmy Grey eight years ago when she was straight out of university and always admired Emmy and her free-spirited and protective ways. So when Leah's life has taken a sudden downturn and she desperately needs to escape, bumping into Emmy again seems serendipitous. Carried along with Emmy, Leah soon finds herself living in rural Pennsylvania working as a teacher instead of a journalist, and hoping that this place will help her heal from everything that has happened to her. But when Emmy suddenly disappears, and a woman who looks very like Leah is viciously attacked, Leah is suddenly thrust back into the limelight that she wants to leave behind. But you cannot take the journalist out of the girl and it isn't long before Leah is building up her own group of suspects but who can she really trust? Gripping, compelling, and at times truly shocking, THE PERFECT STRANGER by Megan Miranda is the psychological thriller that I never knew I needed. Leah is a great character as she is clever, determined, and a bit of an enigma herself and I thoroughly enjoyed being led down this mysterious path to the truth that made my jaw drop. There is tension, an aura of danger, fear, doubt, and mystery laced among every page while simultaneously showing a thread of hope in uncovering the truth. I thoroughly enjoyed THE PERFECT STRANGER by Megan Miranda and I cannot wait to read more from this fabulous author. AUTHOR BIO Megan Miranda is the New York Times bestselling author of ALL THE MISSING GIRLS. She has also written several books for young adults, including FRACTURE, HYSTERIA, VENGEANCE, SOULPRINT, and THE SAFEST LIES. She grew up in New Jersey, graduated from MIT, and lives in North Carolina with her husband and two children. THE PERFECT STRANGER (4/11/17) is her second novel of psychological suspense.
