ABOUT THE BOOK The world is messing with our minds. Rates of stress and anxiety are rising. A fast, nervous planet is creating fast and nervous lives. We are more connected, yet feel more alone. And we are encouraged to worry about everything from world politics to our body mass index. - How can we stay sane on a planet that makes us mad? - How do we stay human in a technological world? - How do we feel happy when we are encouraged to be anxious? After experiencing years of anxiety and panic attacks, these questions became urgent matters of life and death for Matt Haig. And he began to look for the link between what he felt and the world around him. Notes on a Nervous Planet is a personal and vital look at how to feel happy, human and whole in the 21st century. MY REVIEW NOTES ON A NERVOUS PLANET by Matt Haig is everything you need and more to help connect with your anxiety and the million different things that can enhance and make it worse. It is a manual, a guide, an escape hatch, and the kind of book that should be carried in your bag at all times for easy access when you need it. From our constant connection to the world through social media and the internet in general, yes there are fantastic upshots of this, but there are also downsides which Matt expertly points out - devastation, pain, judgement, anger, terror is also just at our fingertips and for those of us who are anxious anyway, this is like a bomb waiting to go off. Matt Haig has written this book through his own experiences and so his words really connect with the reader. You can feel his honesty, his pain, and his hope for the future. There are great tips to help people step down from that anxious ledge and like everything in life, what works for one person doesn't mean it will work for everyone, but it's definitely worth a shot. As pointed out throughout this book, 'Life is beautiful', and when you close this book you will feel that sentence come alive for you. I know I sat in the garden, closed my eyes, listened to my kids laughing as they played with my husband and I felt peace. Yes, life is certainly beautiful. But Matt also recognises that just because there are worse things happening in the world doesn't mean that anxiety and depression won't rear its ugly head and take over when you least expect it. The key is recognising it and the triggers that trip it, of which there are many in our modern world. NOTES ON A NERVOUS PLANET by Matt Haig is a book that should be read by everyone, and I mean EVERYONE! It oozes warmth, self-care, and wisdom and will help so many people see life and our world from a different perspective - I know it has changed me. It is a book that needs to be on every bookshelf in every home, in every town, in every county, and country and I highly recommend it. AUTHOR BIO Matt Haig was born in Sheffield, England in1975. He writes books for both adults and children, often blending the worlds of domestic reality and outright fantasy, with a quirky twist. His bestselling novels are translated into 28 languages. The Guardian has described his writing as 'delightfully weird' and the New York Times has called him 'a novelist of great talent' whose writing is 'funny, riveting and heartbreaking'. Something that puts her in control. But how far will she go to protect her son and punish her husband? And what will happen when his ex and his girlfriend get tangled up in her plans? MY REVIEW What a story!!!! STICKS AND STONES by Jo Jakeman sucks you into this domestic thriller immediately and you don't surface for breath until the very end. When you pick up this story be prepared to be completely blown away. Imogen has suffered both mental and physical abuse at the hands of her now estranged husband for years. But a part of her always believed that she deserved it in some way. But when he threatens to take her home and her precious son away from her, Imogen discovers a core of anger and strength within like never before. She will do whatever it takes to protect those she loves, and she soon finds herself in charge and all the power at her fingertips ... Enthralling, fresh, and utterly brilliant, STICKS AND STONES by Jo Jakeman has everything you want in a good psychological thriller and more. The characters are different, engaging, some likeable, some not so much, but they will make you feel like you are there and witnessing the drama as you step into their shoes for a while. Another thing I really loved about this book was the fact that I had absolutely no idea how it all would end - now when you start reading this book this sentence may confuse you but just you wait and see, you will find yourself holding your breath wondering what way it was going to pan out. STICKS AND STONES by Jo Jakeman is a thrilling debut that would translate perfectly onto our tv screens - I can already see myself sitting on the sofa waiting for the next episode - and I urge all fiction readers to pop this one in your shopping basket. AUTHOR BIO Jo Jakeman was the winner of the Friday Night Live 2016 competition at the York Festival of Writing. Born in Cyprus, she worked for many years in the City of London before moving to Derbyshire with her husband and twin boys. Sticks and Stones is her debut thriller. ABOUT THE BOOK Virginia Wrathmell has always known she will meet her death on the marsh in reparation for the mistakes of her childhood. On New Year's Eve, at the age of eighty-six, Virginia feels the time has finally come. In 1939, Virginia is ten, an orphan arriving to meet her new adoptive parents, Clem and Lorna Wrathmell, at their mysterious house, Salt Winds. The house sits right on the edge of a vast marsh, a beautiful but dangerous place. It's the start of a new life for Virginia, but she quickly senses that all is not right between Clem and Lorna - in particular, the presence of their wealthy neighbour Max Deering, who takes an unhealthy interest in the family. When a German fighter plane crashes into the marsh, Clem ventures onto the deadly sands to rescue the airman. And that is when things really begin to go wrong.. MY REVIEW Dark, tense, and with a haunting atmosphere from beginning to end, this dual timeline novel really grabs a hold of you and sucks you into the drama. When Virginia Wrathmell goes to live with Clem and his wife Lorna in 1939, she immediately connects with her new father and struggles to feel the same way about Lorna. And then there is the unusual atmosphere that lingers over the marshland and the place that will be her home, Salt Winds. This place and its inhabitants oozes secrets and pain as Virginia will soon discover. Fast-forward to the present day and Virginia is now in her eighties, living in Salt Winds, and waiting for a sign that her time has finally come. When she finds the remains of a curlew on her doorstep it is exactly what she has been waiting for. Until an unexpected visitor changes her plans and brings the past bursting to life again in unexpected ways. Gripping, uncomfortable at times, and very compelling, CALL OF THE CURLEW by Elizabeth Brooks is a stunning and evocative story that transports you to a different time and place effortlessly. The characters are almost hypnotic in nature yet not very likeable but this only adds to the nature of the book. CALL OF THE CURLEW by Elizabeth Brooks is beautiful in its prose and I immersed myself in this story to the very end. Definitely a book to add to your buy list! AUTHOR BIO ELIZABETH BROOKS grew up in Chester, and read Classics at Cambridge. She lives on the Isle of Man with her husband and children. Elizabeth describes herself as a “Brontë nerd”; Call of the Curlew is her homage to the immersive and evocative writing of Charlotte Brontë.
