ABOUT THIS BOOK

Till death do us part…

After leaving her marriage to jealous, possessive oncologist Maxwell, Lily and her six-year-old son have a second chance at happiness with headteacher Sebastian. Kind but vulnerable, Sebastian is the polar opposite of Maxwell, and the perfect match for Lily. After a whirlwind romance, they marry, and that’s when things start to go wrong…

Maxwell returns to the scene, determined to win back his family, and events soon spiral out of control. Lily and Sebastian find themselves not only fighting for their relationship, but also their lives…

Chilling, dark and terrifying, Do No Harm is a taut psychological thriller and a study of obsession, from one of the most exciting new voices in crime fiction.

MY REVIEW

When I read L V Hay's debut thriller, The Other Twin, last year it completely blew me away so I was very excited when I saw that there was a new book coming out. As soon as I jumped into DO NO HARM I knew that this story was going to be a cracker but nothing prepared me for the utterly terrifying, disturbing, and shocking drama that was waiting to unfold.

Lily and her little boy have finally found their happily ever after with Sebastian and getting married is the icing on the cake. Having suffered at the hands of her controlling ex-husband, Maxwell, for years, gentle, kind, and considerate Sebastian is everything that he is not. It is time for a fresh start and Lily cannot wait. But what happens when the past refuses to be left behind ...

Dark, twisted, and utterly spine-chilling, DO NO HARM by L V Hay is a forceful story about love and obsession that will leave you gasping for breath. The characters are compelling, engaging, and masterful and the pace is perfect as there are no flat moments to be found.

I didn't think that any story could beat L V Hay's debut but I have to admit that DO NO HARM pips it for me and to be honest, is sitting pretty on the top of my list for the best psychological thriller this year.

If you love thrillers then there is no question that you must read this book - I'm almost envious of those who get to read this story for the first time as it really is that superb!

ABOUT THIS BOOK

September 1939.

A new day dawns in Sackwater, not that this sleepy backwater is taking much notice...

Inspector Betty Church – one of the few female officers on the force – has arrived from London to fill a vacancy at Sackwater police station. But Betty isn't new here. This is the place she grew up. The place she thought she'd left behind for good.

Time ticks slowly in Sackwater, and crime is of a decidedly lighter shade. Having solved the case of the missing buttons, Betty's called to the train station to investigate a missing bench. But though there's no bench, there is a body. A smartly dressed man, murdered in broad daylight, with two distinctive puncture wounds in his throat.

While the locals gossip about the Suffolk Vampire, Betty Church readies herself to hunt a dangerous killer.

MY REVIEW

This was my first time reading anything by M.R.C. Kasasian so I wasn't sure what to expect from this mystery but it charmed me from the very first page and as all excellent novels should, left me wanting more so I really hope there are more adventures in store for Betty Church and her colleagues.

It is 1939 and when Betty Church loses part of her arm in the line of duty, she finds herself relegated back to her quiet hometown of Sackwater, albeit with a promotion to soften the blow. Betty understands that petty crime will be the order of the day but being in uniform as a female officer is everything she has ever wanted and she is determined to give her all to every case. But it isn't long before her job becomes a lot more interesting when two murders occur in quick succession and there are rumours of a vampire on the loose ...
Add in the tension from a country on the brink of war, some quirky and crazy characters that would test anyone's patience, and a dangerous killer and BETTY CHURCH AND THE SUFFOLK VAMPIRE by M.R.C. Kasasian is everything I wanted from a mystery and more.

The characters and setting in this story really come alive and Betty is the best of them all - strong, capable, feisty, intelligent, and determined, she has all of the traits that make a reader really connect with a character, and she is witty too. I laughed many times while reading this story (when you get to know Constable Dodo you will see why) and the drama and intrigue of the plot kept me hooked from start to finish.

This is an old-fashioned whodunnit with refreshing and energetic characters and plenty of surprises along the way. I really hope there will be more from Betty Church and in the meantime I will treat myself to M.R.C. Kasasian's backlist.

ABOUT THIS BOOK

Nellie Bly was a real reporter who is credited with inventing investigative journalism when she had herself locked into a madhouse in 1887. This story weds these real events with a time travel element.

September, 1887 --"Try me, Mr. Pulitzer. You won't regret it." That brash promise haunts Nellie Bly as she languishes in Blackwell Asylum, her most vital tool--her reporter's notebook--locked away out of reach. Without it, her undercover investigation into cruelty at the institution will fail.

June, 2018 --White hat hacker Oliver Cosgriff is between contracts when a strange Craigslist ad snags his attention. Granted, he's not very good a picking up on when someone's joking, but "Time Traveler Wanted" can't be for real. Can it? There's only one way to find out.

Before he knows it, Oliver has a deceptively simple assignment with an outsized paycheck: step through a mirror, navigate Blackwell's nightmarish halls to put Nellie's notebook in her hands, and return. But when he steps back into his own time, something is off. Someone rode his coattails back through the portal. Nellie. Now, with a foot in two very different timelines, she's upending Oliver's world--in ways both terrifying and wondrous. -----

Warning: Contains a hero both charmed and cursed by Asperger's, and an intrepid heroine ahead of her time--literally. Also, a sentient weed-eater, a truly terrifying insane asylum, and hitches in the timeline that could make you rethink that third Frappuccino of the day.

MY REVIEW

Terri Meeker is back with the third instalment in her always exciting and ever-intriguing In Time series titled THE MADHOUSE IN MANHATTAN, and this is a novel that does not disappoint. Now before I delve into my review I just want to state that each of the books in this series can be read as a standalone story but trust me when I say that you will thoroughly enjoy the lot, so go on and treat yourself!

I'm sure many of you know the legend that is Nellie Bly and her undercover assignment in an asylum that would change so much for so many. Well, be prepared to discover the life and world of Nellie like never before. It is 1887 and Nellie has managed the first part of her covert operation but without her trusty notebook to record her important findings, it will all be mute. How on earth will she get herself out of this mess?
In 2018, Oliver Cosgriff is looking for something to fill his time when a strange ad catches his attention. Time travel cannot seriously be possible, can it? As Oliver transcends time his life will brim with adventure, danger, and so much more, but what happens when the past follows him back into the present?

Gripping, entertaining, historical, and quirky are just some of the adjectives I could use to describe THE MADHOUSE IN MANHATTAN by Terri Meeker. This book has heart and soul as well as characters that you will fall in love with, and enough madcap adventures for the most spirited of readers.

THE MADHOUSE IN MANHATTAN by Terri Meeker is a superb novel and part of a superb series and I highly recommend it to all fiction fans as there really is something for everyone.

AUTHOR BIO

Terri Meeker is supposed to write her author blurb in the third person. It's just how things are done. She shouldn't question it, but then she's always been difficult. Even in high school, her best friend's mother described her as 'eccentric' before urging her daughter to make friends with a nice, normal girl.

Though she was born in Wyoming, she has made her home in the Pacific NW. She's loved history since childhood and has been fortunate to live in lots of places with fascinating pasts, including: Washington DC, Philadelphia, Virginia Beach, Albuquerque, Missouri and Mons, Belgium. She's an ex-history teacher, a mom a Whedonite, a gamer and a ginormous nerd. She also loves to write.

ABOUT THIS BOOK

Bound by honour.

Haunted by loss.

8th Century Sweden: Erlan Aurvandil, a Viking outlander, has pledged his sword to Sviggar Ivarsson, King of the Sveärs, and sworn enemy of the Danish king Harald Wartooth. But Wartooth, hungry for power, is stirring violence in the borderlands. As the fires of this ancient feud are reignited Erlan is bound by honour and oath to stand with King Sviggar.
But, unbeknownst to the old King his daughter, Princess Lilla, has fallen under Erlan's spell. As the armies gather Erlan and Lilla must choose between their duty to Sviggar and their love for each other.

Blooded young, betrayed often, Erlan is no stranger to battle. And hidden in the shadows, there are always those determined to bring about the maelstrom of war...

MY REVIEW

The second book in The Wanderer Chronicles, A SACRED STORM by Theodore Brun transports you to another time and place where history and fantasy will blind you with its brilliance and hold you captive to the very end. While this is not a quick read (704 pages make it a vast tome), there is not a sentence that is wasted and I could not put this masterpiece down.

Erlan has pledged his sword to the King of the Sveärs and violence is never far away. With enemies and danger around every corner, Erlan will do what he must as he is bound by his oath and his honour. But when the King's daughter, Lilla, is to be bartered off in marriage Erlan will face an even deeper battle for how can he watch his beloved be given to another? And in the darkness, there are always those who are waiting to pounce ...

There are characters that you will loathe, those that you will love, and those that are so complex that you will get lost in their depths, all set amongst a brutal, yet at times, beautiful, setting that will take your breath away.

This epic series really has got it all and I have to say that A SACRED STORM pips it as my favourite of the two so far.

Whether you are a historical fiction or fantasy fan, this series has it all and I highly recommend it to all.

ABOUT THIS BOOK

Cecilia Wilborg has it all--a loving husband, two beautiful daughters, and a gorgeous home in an affluent Norwegian suburb. And she works hard to keep it all together. Too hard...

There is no room for mistakes in her life. Even taking home a little boy whose parents forgot to pick him up at the pool can put a crimp in Cecilia's carefully planned schedule. Especially when she arrives at the address she was given
and finds an empty, abandoned house...

There's nothing for Cecilia to do but to take the boy home with her, never realizing that soon his quiet presence and knowing eyes will trigger unwelcome memories from her past--and unravel her meticulously crafted life...

MY REVIEW

THE BOY AT THE DOOR by Alex Dahl is a haunting, uncomfortable, and riveting story of family, lies, and how far one would go to keep their life together.

Cecilia Wilborg has a perfect husband, a perfect career, and perfect daughters. Her life is simple, easy, and everything that one could wish for. Or is it? For beneath the facade that Cecilia puts on for the world lies a deeply troubled and anxious soul who will do whatever it takes to hold her world together. And when she is asked to drop a little boy home from swimming when his parents don't show up, it just might pull her perfect life down around her ears.

Compelling, disturbing, and harrowing to read at times THE BOY AT THE DOOR by Alex Dahl does not shy away from the difficult topics of abuse and drugs and I was immediately caught up in the drama. Most of the characters are distinctly unlikeable throughout yet this only makes the story more realistic and I couldn't put this debut novel down until the very end. I don't want to say too much about the plot because I don't want to give any of the twists away but this story will leave you reeling.

THE BOY AT THE DOOR by Alex Dahl is a wonderfully crafted, richly detailed, psychological thriller and I cannot wait to see what Alex Dahl comes up with next.

AUTHOR BIO

Half-American, half-Norwegian, Alex Dahl was born in Oslo. She graduated with a B.A. in Russian and German linguistics with international studies and went on to complete an M.A. in creative writing at Bath Spa University, followed by an M.S. in business management at Bath University. ABOUT THIS BOOK

What do you do when the love of your life is already somebody else’s dad…?

Brown-eyed, brunette, 25.

Enjoys walking barefoot across shards of broken home. Likes loaded silences, resentment and insomnia. Dislikes romantic weekends, lie-ins and any chance of future happiness.

Former GSOH. Developing PTSD.

Ella Shawe was undomesticated, unattached and uninhibited.

Until she met Dan.

Sexy, charming and funny, Dan ticked all the right boxes and Ella threw herself head-first into the whirlwind romance.

But now she’s moved into his family home, complete with two demanding children and a hyperactive dog.

Throw in Dan’s impossibly perfect ex-wife, Ella’s interfering sex therapist mother and the snooty and dismissive mother-in-law from Hell, and Ella is almost ready to throw in the towel.

But, ready or not, Ella is part of the family now, and getting it right for Dan’s kids means getting it right for everyone. She just needs to figure out how to include herself in the mix…

MY REVIEW

GIRLFRIEND, INTERRUPTED by Patricia Caliskan is a story that will make you laugh, make you feel, and keep you gripped from beginning to end.

Ella Shawe was living her carefree life until she fell in love with Dan. But ever since she moved in something has shifted in their relationship and it isn't just the fact that Ella has become an overnight stepmother to Dan's two children at the weekends - although that has its own set of problems, let me tell you. Dan suddenly seems to have stopped seeing Ella has his lover and more like his roommate. So Ella decides that making them all a proper family will save the day but what will happen when her stepkids have their own ideas of what they would like to do with their stepmum?
Add in a mother who deems no topic inappropriate, a mother-in-law from hell, and the perfect ex-wife and GIRLFRIEND, INTERRUPTED by Patricia Caliskan has drama and mishaps aplenty around every corner.

The characters are likeable and relatable and I really loved Ella's mum even though she is a handful. The ending was a little bit abrupt for me purely because I wanted to know more but maybe there is more to come from Ella and the gang (??).

GIRLFRIEND, INTERRUPTED by Patricia Caliskan is a witty, clever, and fully entertaining read and I look forward to reading more from this author.

AUTHOR BIO

Patricia Caliskan's latest novel, GIRLFRIEND, INTERRUPTED, was released by Sapere Books in June.

Her debut novel, AWFUL BY COMPARISON, was reissued by Sapere Books in July.

Told with mischievous humour, Patricia’s stories explore family dynamics, office politics, and the divergent roles of women throughout their lives…

Patricia Caliskan began her writing career as an entertainment journalist, spending 10 years acting as editor across a portfolio of magazine titles for Trinity Mirror Newsgroup.

Never one to shy away from a sonic ident, after writing everything from erotic fiction to Asbestos safety pamphlets, Patricia joined Bauer Media as a commercial scriptwriter.

Patricia likes a nice, flouncy scarf, a good pair of boots, and laughter. Lots of laughter. Otherwise life feels far too grown-up for her liking.

ABOUT THIS BOOK

Seeing is believing!

DCI Morgan was looking forward to returning to his old career in his beloved hometown. However, when he’s assigned to his first case, to question a young woman, Grace, who claims she has psychic abilities, he is more than a little sceptical!

Grace claims to have seen the murder of a woman – Scarlett, the wife of a wealthy entrepreneur – six months ago. Her murder was supposedly solved, with the culprit in prison, and the case closed, but did it really happen the way the police were led to believe?

As Grace embarks on a mission to discover the truth behind Scarlett’s death, she uncovers dark secrets, shocking revelations, and lies once buried which threaten to resurface.

A twisting and turning plot, weaved with mystery, suspense, romance and more than a hint of the supernatural…

MY REVIEW

SEEING SCARLETT by NC Marshall is a fast-paced, exciting, and completely fresh thriller that will have you sitting up late so that you can get to the end as fast as possible to uncover the truth.

DCI Morgan and his family are delighted to be back in his hometown and it is even better as he gets to work with fellow investigator Charlotte who has become a good friend. But when their first case involves a woman who claims to have experienced a psychic flashback involving an old murder which is already wrapped up, this wasn't exactly the type of crime investigating that they imagined.
Grace has only ever had an out of body experience once before in her life and it is certainly not something that she enjoys. But when she sees the murder of Scarlett Preston, she cannot keep the information to herself, because there is something wrong with this case that appears to be solved and the killer may still be out there.

With plenty of twists along the way, some completely unexpected and a few that I had guessed, SEEING SCARLETT by NC Marshall is a compelling story that hooked me in straight away. I really enjoyed the characters of Tony, Charlotte, and Grace and I loved the supernatural element of it all which really was unique.

There is murder, secrets, lies, betrayals, and so much more and I thoroughly enjoyed this story from start to finish. A must-read for all crime fiction fans everywhere!!!!

ABOUT THE BOOK

In this gripping new work of suspense from the author of The Double Game, a young woman discovers a nefarious truth at the heart of the CIA's operations in postwar Berlin and goes on the run for her life; years later she's gruesomely murdered along with her husband, and her daughter begins to chase down these startling secrets from her past.

West Berlin, 1979. Helen Abell oversees the CIA's network of safe houses, rare havens for field agents and case officers amidst the dangerous milieu of a city in the grips of the Cold War. Helen's world is upended when, during her routine inspection of an agency property, she overhears a meeting between two people unfamiliar to her speaking a coded language that hints at shadowy realities far beyond her comprehension. Before the day is out, she witnesses a second unauthorized encounter, one that will place her in the sightlines of the most ruthless and powerful man at the agency. Her attempts to expose the dark truths about what she has witnessed will bring about repercussions that reach across decades and continents into the present day, when, in a farm town in Maryland, a young man is arrested for the double murder of his parents, and his sister takes it upon herself to find out why he did it.

MY REVIEW

SAFE HOUSES by Dan Fesperman is an intense, captivating, and gripping novel that will keep you hooked from beginning to end, and keep you guessing every step of the way.

In 1979, Helen Abell works for the CIA and oversees their safe houses but when she records something that she was never supposed to hear, will she get rid of it like she is advised? And when she encounters another shady meeting, this will place her in the path of the most powerful man in their world.
Fast forward over thirty years and Helen and her husband are found murdered and all clues seem to point to their disabled son. But their daughter knows that her brother has never been violent and is determined to uncover the truth, even if it means digging into her parents past.

Compelling from the first page, I was immediately sucked into the murky world of espionage and double-crossing.
With plenty of danger, secrets, lies, and subterfuge, SAFE HOUSES by Dan Fesperman is a cracking story that is perfect for those who love a fast-paced, energetic thriller. Definitely a must-read for fans of Robert Ludlum and I highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys an action-packed, thrilling story.
