That one day, we’ll sit down at our computer and no words will come, not one. We’ll stare at an empty screen and absolutely nothing of worth will enter our heads, our minds will remain blank, our fingers resting, immobile and useless, on the keyboard. This awful state of affairs could go on for days, weeks, months or even years. No matter what we do, whether we read hundreds of books for inspiration, take a holiday, talk endlessly to other authors about our problems or go to a therapist, nothing seems to shift the paralysis. Perhaps we’ll never write again, we think. We’re doomed. Except that that this sorry condition, affliction, or whatever else we like to call it, doesn’t really exist. It’s all in our minds. Let me explain: in my view, there are a lot of myths around writing, and the biggest of all is that of the ‘writer’s muse’. We seem to believe that creativity comes from outside rather than within, almost like a gift bestowed on us from above. The drawback of this view is that we imagine if we can just be patient, if we can wait for inspiration to strike, for the muse to flutter down and land on our shoulder or in our ear, then the words will begin to pour like sweet music from our hearts and on to the page, as if we’re mere conduits who have little or nothing to do with the actual process. After six novels (I’m writing my seventh now), and hours and hours spent sweating in front of my laptop, I now know this to be a fallacy. Writing is a job, like any other, and if you hang about until you’re in the ‘right mood’, nothing, or very little, will ever get done. Hard graft is the name of the game, and lots of it. I recently told a friend, who had been procrastinating over writing an article for a magazine, that the best way to make progress was simply to sit down in a quiet room and force herself not to get up until she had produced a minimum of three paragraphs. If the words were bad, I explained, she could always go back and change them later. The point is that she would have something to work with now whereas before, there was nothing. In the same way, if I’m having real trouble focusing, I will metaphorically chain myself to my desk, phone off, cup of coffee by my side, and refuse to rise until I’ve produced five hundreds words, no matter how poor I deem them to be. If it takes all day to squeeze them out, so be it. With luck the following day will be more productive, but at least I’ll have moved forwards. There’s a brilliant book by Anne Lamott called ‘Bird by Bird: Some Instructions on Writing and Life’ in which she argues that at the heart of writing lies a capacity for quiet grit. We all feel insecure at times, we all think our work is rubbish. To overcome these negative feelings, the very best thing we can do is write and so long as we keep doing it, eventually we’ll unjam. When I’m struggling to concentrate, I often reread the paragraph in her book from which her title is drawn: ‘Thirty years ago my older brother, who was ten years old at the time, was trying to get a report on birds written that he’d had three months to write, which was due the next day. We were out at our family cabin in Bolinas, and he was at the kitchen table close to tears, surrounded by binder paper and pencils and unopened books on birds, immobilized by the hugeness of the task ahead. Then my father sat down beside him, put his arm around my brother’s shoulder, and said, “Bird by bird, buddy. Just take it bird by bird.’ And so it is with novels. Just take it line by line, paragraph by paragraph, chapter by chapter, and eventually you will have a whole, glorious book that you can go back and change, edit, buff and polish as often as you like until you’re satisfied. So you see, no one really needs to be scared of writer’s block, because it’s not there, only fear, self doubt and dreaded perfectionism. What a relief! And now I’m going back to my next paragraph…or two or three. MY REVIEW Instantly hooked, CLOSE TO ME by Amanda Reynolds threw me into the story and I didn't resurface until I had reached the end - and boy, what an ending! In this story, we meet Jo who has fallen down the stairs and taken a nasty bang to the head. When she recovers the next day in hospital, she cannot remember what has happened to her or anything from the previous year. Worried, horrified, and anxious at this development she returns home under the watchful eye of her devoted husband. But not only is Jo missing her memories, she cannot shake the feeling of unease around her husband or the fact that her picture perfect family seem to have fallen apart at the seams. Why are her kids so distant and what exactly are they all hiding from her? What happened in the past year that has blown her world apart? And can she trust the people that she has loved forever? As fleeting glimpses of memory flash through her mind, Jo will have to slowly piece it together one block at a time, but sometimes the truth is worse than anything you could ever imagine... The plot is fast-paced, the drama superb, and the twists and turns in this novel are all excellent and are sure to keep you on your toes. While the characters are not exactly likeable, they are compelling, and as different scenarios ran through my head I wasn't sure which way the story was going to go - and I love the fact that I was kept guessing! The story moves easily from past to present and it really worked as the reader gets to learn the events of the past year before Jo actually remembers it and this really adds to the momentum and tense atmosphere of the book overall. There were a few times where I felt that the story dragged out just a little bit, but overall it was a well-paced and riveting read. If you like psychological thrillers with plenty of creepy undertones, then you should definitely read CLOSE TO ME by Amanda Reynolds. Author Bio: I haven't always been an author, although I always wanted to be. I've been a teaching assistant, a sales trainer, a full-time mum and part-time almost everything you can think of, including a summer spent milking goats. Five years ago, I decided to properly start writing and that's when I also set up Cotswold Creative Writing, teaching two writing classes a week. Check it out below: GUESTPOST Terror Imitating Art While writing my latest Joe Hunter thriller – Marked For Death – I was full steam ahead, throwing my protagonist into what I planned to be his most explosive outing yet. Without giving away any spoilers, I wanted Hunter to stumble across and become plunged into the middle of a sinister terrorist plot to attack the USA in response to their recent intervention in the conflict in Syria. But as I was penning (or actually typing) the unfolding drama and action, the darker aspects of terrorism began overtaking art. The terrible attacks on London and Manchester occurred even as I was writing of similar scenes. I’ll tell the truth. I considered backing off from my plot and coming up with something totally different, concerned that I might be seen as being insensitive to what was going on in the real world. But then I thought no. Just as those people in London and Manchester did who got up the following morning and returned to their normal day jobs and lives in defiance of the terrorists, I thought I should do the same. I changed some scenes that came too close to what had occurred in the two London attacks – it is not my intention to glorify horrible, senseless events where people actually lost their lives – but stuck with my overall plot to throw Hunter against those intent on terrorising ordinary, decent people. In fact, I may have been spurred on by the determination to fight back against those determined to change our way of life, and used Hunter as my tool of vengeance by proxy. Whatever my motivation, my end result was to pen (or type) a thumping good action thriller, where good will win out. I think I’ve done that. For those of you unfamiliar with my Hunter books, it’s probably best that I give you a sense of who he is should you choose to pick up his latest adventure. Marked For Death (Published by Canelo in e-book worldwide on 17th July 2017) is the twelfth book in the series, but can be read as a standalone adventure, and is an ideal jumping-in point. Joe Hunter is British, and an ex-soldier, now living and working for his friend Rink’s private investigations firm in the USA. Admittedly, Hunter doesn’t see himself as a good investigator, but rather takes on jobs that are more suited to his physical skill set. He is a protector and avenger, and stands up for the innocent and downtrodden. He could be described as a vigilante. He can be uncompromising in his response to aggression, but he is no mindless thug. He’s a good man doing bad things to terrible people. Some readers compare Hunter to Lee Child’s Jack Reacher – and sometimes the comparisons are polarized for good and bad – but I tend to see only minor similarities. Reacher thinks before he hits the bad guys, Hunter is more hair-trigger impulsive. Not that I’m complaining: to be mentioned in the same sentence with Lee or his creation is a massive honour. The truth is Hunter and Reacher inhabit a similar universe, and most definitely the same action thriller genre. If you are looking for a more sedate read, something more cerebral, then Hunter probably isn’t your ideal protagonist. But if you are hoping to kick back and read for visceral enjoyment, then Hunter and Marked For Death offers thrills and spills aplenty. Along with her four-legged companion, Dolly, Guinevere is delighted to spend time in such a historical treasure trove, and the stunning scenery and friendly village all combine to make Guinevere feel welcome and settled. But when a medieval re-enactment up at the castle goes awry and one of the actors is found murdered, Guinevere must unravel many secrets and lies to discover the killer. But who can she really trust? As always with Vivian Conroy's stories, the descriptive settings really come alive and I could picture myself standing at the castle window, or walking along the shoreline as the sun set over the village. The characters are a motley crew that are really likeable and unique in their own ways, and I enjoyed getting to know Guinevere who throws herself wholeheartedly into whatever situation she finds herself and wants to help wherever she can. Knowing little of her own family history, we can see how this has affected her in her decisions. With plenty of mystery, twists, turns, and misunderstandings, DEATH PLAYS A PART by Vivian Conroy is exactly what you want in a good book, and I imagine it would translate perfectly onto our TV screens. I am hooked on this new series and I invite you all to come and join the mystery tour - you won't regret it!
