ABOUT THIS BOOK When Liv, Ellen, and Håkon, along with their partners and children, arrive in Rome to celebrate their father’s 70th birthday, a quiet earthquake occurs: their parents have decided to divorce. Shocked and disbelieving, the siblings try to come to terms with their parents’ decision as it echoes through the homes they have built for themselves, and forces them to reconstruct the shared narrative of their childhood and family history. A bittersweet novel of regret, relationships, and rare psychological insights, A Modern Family encourages us to look at the people closest to us a little more carefully, and ultimately reveals that it’s never too late for change. MY REVIEW A MODERN FAMILY by Helga Flatland is an in-depth look into the complex relationships that exist within a family and what happens to those relationships and emotions when the status quo changes. Liv, her husband and their two kids, her sister Ellen and her partner, and their brother have all arrived in Italy to celebrate their father's 70th birthday. All grown-up, it isn't long before the siblings fall back into their childish roles and as they each try to deal with their own problems and life changes, they all struggle to navigate their family dynamics at times. When their parents, the foundation of their family, announce that they are getting a divorce, it rocks each of their children and their grandchildren in different ways as they must now learn to figure out this new change in their life. Engaging and thought-provoking, A MODERN FAMILY by Helga Flatland is a very well-written story that will gently lure you in and keep you interested to the very end, and I'm sure there is something for everyone to relate to among these pages. Definitely, a must-read for fans of family dramas and I highly recommend A MODERN FAMILY by Helga Flatland. AUTHOR BIO Helga Flatland is already one of Norway's most awarded and widely read authors. ABOUT THIS BOOK When three domestic abuse offenders are found beaten to death, DC Maggie Jamieson knows she is facing her toughest case yet. The police suspect that Probation Officer Lucy Sherwood – who is connected to all three victims – is hiding a dark secret. Then a fourth domestic abuser is brutally murdered. And he is Lucy’s husband. Now the finger of suspicion points at Lucy and the police are running out of time. Can Maggie and her team solve the murders before another person dies? And is Lucy really a cold-blooded killer? MY REVIEW It is time to make room for another Queen of crime fiction because DEAD INSIDE by Noelle Holten is a masterpiece of deception and suspense and I'm already chomping at the bit to read the next book from this brilliant new author. Lucy Sherwood's job as a Probation Officer can take a lot out of her but she knows that she is good at it and she needs the paycheque especially since her husband is out of work and drinking heavily as usual. You would think she should know better than to stay with an abuser but there are her stepchildren to consider and some days are ok. And then he is murdered and suddenly Lucy finds herself at the centre of the investigation. When bodies are discovered, a new team of Police Officers is ready to hunt down the killer, even if the victims are abusers and criminals in their own right. For DC Maggie Jamieson it is a chance to step away after a particularly hard case and focus in a different area but as the search for the killer ramps up, can Maggie and her co-workers figure out the truth before it is too late? Compelling, terrifying, and utterly unputdownable, DEAD INSIDE by Noelle Holten brings domestic abuse and its impact to the forefront and while it isn't always an easy read, it is such an important one. Lucy is a complex character as she is so strong, independent and determined at work, and yet so vulnerable and afraid at home with her husband that it seems to be an enigma but the more you get to know Lucy, the more you understand her and empathise with her while willing her to get out. I loved getting to know this new team of crime-fighting detectives and police officers and as this is the first book from this author, I cannot wait to learn even more about them in the next book. There are plenty of suspects in this crime fiction novel and I enjoyed trying to piece it all together myself and there were so many moments when I was sure I had it figured out but then was thrown by something on the next page. DEAD INSIDE by Noelle Holten is simply superb and if you buy one book this year make it this one!!!!!!!!!! AUTHOR BIO Noelle Holten is an award-winning blogger at www.crimebookjunkie.co.uk. She is the PR & Social Media Manager for Bookouture, a leading digital publisher in the UK, and was a regular reviewer on the Two Crime Writers and a Microphone podcast. ABOUT THIS BOOK Could one summer change your life? When high-flying American lawyer Samantha Muir finds out she’s lost her partnership whilst on an assignment in London, she has a dramatic reaction. Rather than returning home, she resigns, leaves her business suits behind and jumps on the first train to Cornwall at the encouragement of a friendly stranger. The village of Little Penhaven, where Samantha eventually ends up, is a world away from her life in Knoxville, Tennessee – and local farmer Cadan Day is certainly a world away from any man she has met before. But could the Cornish village and Cadan play a part in Samantha’s summer of self-discovery? MY REVIEW Enjoyable and with a beautiful setting, ONE SUMMER IN LITTLE PENHAVEN by Angela Britnell is a must-read this summer for all contemporary fiction/romance fans. Samantha has done everything possible to make her way up the career ladder and when she doesn't make partner while on a work trip in London, she has had enough. Resigning on the spot, Samantha decides she needs some spontaneity in her life and hops on a train to Cornwall after talking to a lovely lady who lives there. And Little Penhaven is so far removed from her life in America that Samantha is excited to try a quieter pace of life where everyone knows everything about each other. Or at least they think they do. Warned by the community to stay away from local bad boy Cadan, Samantha feels like they may not know this man as well as they think they do but soon Samantha will have to return to her real life back in the US, won't she? With plenty of drama, secrets, and chemistry, ONE SUMMER IN LITTLE PENHAVEN by Angela Britnell is one of those books that you easily get lost in while relaxing in the garden and suddenly it is evening time and you have it finished. I really liked the characters and the setting makes me want to head over to Cornwall at the first opportunity. This is a lovely read and I look forward to more from this author. AUTHOR BIO Angela grew up in Cornwall and returns frequently from her new home in Nashville, Tennessee to visit family and friends, drink tea and eat far too many Cornish pasties! Thanks to over three decades of marriage to her wonderful American husband she's a huge fan of transatlantic romance and always makes sure her characters get their own happy-ever-after. ABOUT THIS BOOK A brand-new anthology of crime stories written by masters of the genre. Featuring both original in-universe stories and rarely-seen reprints, this collection of masterful short stories brings together some of the genre's greatest living authors. MY REVIEW I will be the first to admit that I don't tend to read many short stories and this is something that I would like to rectify so when EXIT WOUNDS arrived through my letterbox, I was delighted to try something a little different. From serial killers picking off their prey to those hell-bent on revenge, this collection of crime stories from some of the best in the business grabbed my attention at the very first story and every one thereafter. Dark, twisted, and with characters that got under my skin in just a few pages, EXIT WOUNDS is a must-read for short story and crime fiction fans the world over. While each and every story is different and fresh there were a few that I favoured - The Bully by Jeffrey Deaver, Happy Holidays by Val McDermid, and The Pitcher by Sarah Hilary. All the stories are excellent and brimming with tension but there was just that extra something about those three that made me take a deep breath while reading them. Compelling characters, sinister plots, and crackling atmosphere can all be found in the short stories nestled among the pages of EXIT WOUNDS and I highly recommend it to all fiction readers, especially those who are unsure about short stories because this collection is sure to change your mind. EDITOR BIOS Paul Kane is the award-winning author of over 70 books, including Alone (In the Dark), Touching the Flame, FunnyBones, Signs of Life, The Lazarus Condition, Peripheral Visions, The Hellraiser Films and Their Legacy, RED, Of Darkness and Light, The Gemini Factor and the bestselling Arrowhead trilogy of novels (Arrowhead, Broken Arrow and Arrowland). He is a respected anthologist, editing collections such as Beyond Rue Morgue, Hell-Bound Hearts and Sherlock Holmes and the Servants of Hell. Marie O'Regan is an British Fantasy Award-nominated writer and editor of horror and dark fantasy fiction. Her anthologies include Mirror Mere, Hellbound Hearts, The Mammoth Book of Body Horror, Carnivale: Dark Tales From the Fairground and The Mammoth Book of Ghost Stories by Women.
