ABOUT THE BOOK To Rome…with love? Mary Smith is turning her very ordinary life upside-down! She’s bought herself a one-way ticket to Rome and is ready for a summer she’ll never forget. Men might be off the cards for waitress Mary, but within hours of arriving at the utterly charming family-run La Dolce Vita pizzeria, she’s already fallen in love with the bustling capital! Only Dante Rossi, the mysterious (and drop-dead gorgeous) chef seems displeased with her arrival. And in the heat of the kitchen, it doesn’t take long for long-buried secrets to surface and sparks to fly… A deliciously heartwarming romance to have you dreaming of summer. Perfect for fans of Debbie Johnson and Caroline Roberts. MY REVIEW Oh man ONE SUMMER IN ROME by Samantha Tonge really touched my heart and I fell in love with Rome, and the Rossi family, and the vulnerable and compassionate Mary Smith who is everything you would want in a friend and family member. Mary doesn't know what it feels like to belong, to be a part of a family, having grown up in different foster care homes all through her childhood. So when her boyfriend decides to leave her behind, Mary isn't surprised but this time it pushes her to take a chance at her own adventure and so she finds herself with a one-way ticket to Rome where a waitressing job awaits her. Rome is everything she dreamed of and more, and most members of the Rossi family that own the restaurant where she works and lives make her feel like part of the family. If only the handsome brooding chef, Dante, could let down his guard a little, maybe they could be friends ... or more. But Mary isn't the only person carrying baggage from their past and as the tourist season picks up with serious competition from a new restaurant, will this summer be the only one for Mary to find out who she really is and what she wants from life, in the magical ambience of Italy? I have only travelled to Rome once but the exquisite descriptions of this magnificent city really brought it back to life for me and made me want to book a flight there as soon as possible. The characters are completely loveable as they try to work their way through all of the emotions and heartache of the past and present, and I desperately wanted them all to find happiness and realise their own strength. The food, the settings, the sights, the smells are all excellently depicted and made my mouth water on more than one occasion and as Mary, Dante, and the entire Rossi clan opened up throughout these pages, I definitely found myself with a tear in my eye many a time. ONE SUMMER IN ROME by Samantha Tonge is not the first book that I have read from this talented author but it is certainly my favourite and I really hope this is not the last that we see of Mary Smith and the magic of Rome. An excellent contemporary story with plenty of romance and emotion to tug at your heartstrings. AUTHOR BIO Samantha lives in Cheshire with her lovely family and a cat that thinks it's a dog. Along with writing, her days are spent willing cakes to rise and avoiding housework. A love of fiction developed as a child, when she was known for reading Enid Blyton books in the bath. Formally trained as a linguist, Samantha now likes nothing more than holing herself up in the spare room, in front of the keyboard. She has sold over 80 stories to women's magazines. Her bestselling debut novel, "Doubting Abbey", was shortlisted for the Festival of Romantic Fiction best Ebook award in 2014. Game of Scones won the 2015 Love Stories Awards Best Romantic Ebook category and was a Top Ten Kindle UK bestseller, as was her 2016 novel Breakfast under a Cornish Sun, published by HQDigtial, HarperCollins . ABOUT THE BOOK A big bereavement. An empty nest. And a runaway husband. Susannah Stevens hopes that whoever said bad things come in threes got it right, because she can't cope with much more going wrong in her life. She finds herself a job as a freelance 'Mind Body and Spirit' correspondent, meets a self-styled guru who thinks she needs liberating from more than just an empty nest, and learns that sometimes all you can do is go with the flow of life. Susannah's boss, Katie Corrigan, is young enough to be her daughter. She has always played by the rules in order to further her career, but when she too discovers there are some things she just can't control, she has to reassess all she thought she knew. In a fast-moving year of crisis and reinvention, each woman has to figure out what to do when her Plan A falls apart - and she never dreamt she'd need a Plan B. MY REVIEW After reading successive psychological thrillers I decided that a change of genre was needed and so I picked up REINVENTING SUSANNAH by Joan Brady, and what a fabulous story it is. Susannah Stevens and Katie Corrigan are two women at different stages of their lives who suddenly find themselves questioning everything about their lives and themselves. Susannah's children are grown and living in New York, her mother has died, and her relationship with her husband Rob is distant at best, but nothing prepared her for the news that Rob was leaving for a year to travel alone and find himself. Truly alone in every sense of the word can Susannah find a way through the mess that has become her life and really feel alive again? While at the same time super-organised and responsible Katie Corrigan is working all the hours possible to work her way up the ladder for the Daily Post while having the occasional date night with her boyfriend Luke. But when Luke makes a push for more commitment, Katie wants to run in the opposite direction and even into behaving rashly ... but after experiencing the fallout of broken promises through her parent's divorce, can Katie ever really let down her guard and throw caution to the wind for a chance at love? Perfectly paced with engaging and endearing characters, REINVENTING SUSANNAH by Joan Brady is flawless and I was swept along with the drama from the very first page. There are moments that will make you laugh and moments that will make you pause and really connect with the characters and what they are going through, and I loved everything about this book. REINVENTING SUSANNAH by Joan Brady is a fabulous contemporary novel about life, relationships, and discovering what truly makes you happy, and I highly recommend this novel to fiction fans everywhere. ABOUT THE BOOK The Uprising Series tells the story of three freedom fighters and their friends in high — and low — places that come together to overthrow a vainglorious Emperor and his militaristic Cabal to restore the city, and the way of life, they once knew and loved. In The Gathering, Jamie Ryan has defected from the Cabal and has joined his former brothers-in-arms — Basile Perrinault and Kanoa Shinomura — to form a collective known as The Uprising. When an explosion leads to him crossing paths with Evanora Cunningham — a product of Jamie’s past — he discovers that The Uprising is bigger, and more important, than he thought. MY REVIEW THE GATHERING by Bernadette Giacomazzo is a gutsy and unique novel filled with danger and brimming with energy. Three fighters from different backgrounds and walks of life find themselves at the front of the freedom movement in the hopes of restoring New York City to its former glory before the days of the dictatorship of the Emperor and his terrorising Cabal. But danger lurks around every corner with most of the citizens terrified to make a wrong move. But they will not give up because there is too much at stake ... With graphic language and some uncomfortable situations, THE GATHERING by Bernadette Giacomazzo will not be for everyone but this doesn't take away from the fresh narrative and interesting take on power and corruption that runs throughout the story. A strange but interesting read that will appeal to dystopian fiction and science fiction fans alike. AUTHOR BIO With an impressive list of credentials earned over the course of two decades, Bernadette R. Giacomazzo is a multi-hyphenate in the truest sense of the word: an editor, writer, photographer, publicist, and digital marketing specialist who has demonstrated an uncanny ability to thrive in each industry with equal aplomb. NYC Magazine for nearly a decade, the executive editor of LatinTRENDS Magazine for five years, the eye candy editor of XXL Magazine for two years, and the editor-at-large at iOne/Zona de Sabor for two years. ABOUT THE BOOK Polly, 28, lives in London with her 'perfect-on-paper' boyfriend. She works a dead-end job on a free London paper. . . life as she knows it is dull. But her banal existence is turned upside down late one drunken night on her way home, after a chance encounter with a man on a packed tube train. The chemistry between them is electric and on impulse, they kiss, giving in to their carnal desires. But it's over in an instant, and Polly is left shell-shocked as he walks away without even telling her his name. Now obsessed with this beautiful stranger, Polly begins a frantic online search, and finally discovers more about tubing, an underground phenomenon in which total strangers set up illicit, silent, sexual meetings on busy commuter tube trains. In the process, she manages to track him down and he slowly lures her into his murky world, setting up encounters with different men via Twitter. At first she thinks she can keep it separate from the rest of her life, but things soon spiral out of control. By chance she spots him on a packed tube train with a young, pretty blonde. Seething with jealousy, she watches them together. But something isn't right and a horrific turn of events makes Polly realise not only how foolish she has been, but how much danger she is in... Can she get out before it's too late? MY REVIEW TUBING by K.A. McKeagney is a disturbing and uncomfortable read that will divide opinion but it is certainly unique and compelling in its own right. Polly has had a troubled life so far suffering from anorexia and having a very toxic relationship with her mother but on the outside, she has an ok job, and a steady relationship with Oliver, a kind, and considerate man. But there is something missing and she doesn't quite know what. So when she feels an electricity with a stranger across the carriage on the London tube she acts on it and engages in a purely sexual act in public. Polly soon discovers an undercover world known as tubing where strangers hook up on crowded tube trains for pleasure and it isn't long before Polly is caught up in this strange world. But when Polly witnesses something horrific she realises just how dangerous this dark world can be and as she digs deeper into those involved with tubing, it becomes even more terrifying ... TUBING by K.A. McKeagney is filled with unlikeable characters, including Polly, and uncomfortable situations and emotions, but it still holds your attention and makes you need to uncover the truth. As soon as I finished this book I couldn't help but ask myself is tubing real?? I really hope not!! TUBING by K.A. McKeagney is dark, disturbing and seriously messed up and will definitely appeal to thriller fans that are looking for something fresh, Be aware that there are graphic sexual scenes throughout. AUTHOR BIO K.A. McKeagney studied psychology in Bristol before completing a Masters degree in creative writing at Brunel. She won the Curtis Brown prize for her dissertation, which formed the basis of her first novel Tubing. She has worked in London as a health editor writing consumer information as well as for medical journals. Her writing has been commended by the British Medical Association (BMA) patient information awards. She is currently working on her second novel. ABOUT THE BOOK "It was a secret burial. Maybe even murder..." Archaeologist Sage Westfield has been called in to excavate a sixteenth-century well, and expects to find little more than soil and the odd piece of pottery. But the disturbing discovery of the bones of a woman and newborn baby make it clear that she has stumbled onto an historical crime scene, one that is interwoven with an unsettling local legend of witchcraft and unrequited love. Yet there is more to the case than a four-hundred-year-old mystery. The owners of a nearby cottage are convinced that it is haunted, and the local vicar is being plagued with abusive phone calls. Then a tragic death makes it all too clear that a modern murderer is at work... MY REVIEW A BABY'S BONES by Rebecca Alexander is a riveting read that brings past and present alive in a twisted story of obsession, witchcraft, and relationships. Sage Westfield has a lot going on in her life with her work as an archaeologist taking up much of her time and impending motherhood on the horizon. It doesn't help that she has split up with the father and her current work project unearths much more than shards of pottery when human bones are found in the well. But the more Sage discovers about the history of the area the more she wants to know, and uncovering what happened to the woman and child that was dumped in the well becomes a top priority. And as Sage develops new friendships and relationships in the area, it becomes a living and breathing historical project to reveal the truth. But strange things are happening to those living in the cottage and when a fresh body is discovered it becomes clear that it isn't just the demons from the past that are seeking revenge ... Compelling, engaging, and completely fresh, A BABY'S BONES by Rebecca Alexander is a book that you plan to read for an hour and soon find yourself completely hooked on. The characters are sharp and intelligent, and I love that the narrative moves from past to present so that the archaeological dig becomes even more alive and substantial. There is love, friendship, haunting obsessions, and new life mixed throughout with history and the modern world and it all adds together perfectly to create a richly detailed narrative that will hypnotise you from start to finish. A BABY'S BONES by Rebecca Alexander is perfect for historical and crime fiction fans alike and I cannot wait to read more from this talented author. AUTHOR BIO Having had a career in psychology, Rebecca Alexander decided to take time out to raise and home educate six children - and home educate herself with an MA in Creative Writing. The Secrets of Life and Death (2013) was a runner up in the 2011 novel writing competition with Mslexia and an agent and book deal for three books ensued. The Secrets of Blood and Bone (2014) and The Secrets of Time and Fate (2016) were published by Del Rey UK. With a historical strand exploring 16th century sorcery and a contemporary story about revenants, the books enjoyed a fantasy readership. Since then, A Baby's Bones will be published by Titan Books (May 1 2018) and is decidedly crime. A sequel comes out next April, and the books follow the work of an archaeologist trying to solve crimes in the past. And staying safe in the present, with the help of Felix Guichard from the Secrets series. Things are still going bump in the night. ABOUT THE BOOK When the submarine departed, none of the ten people on board knew it would turn into a nightmare. Trapped on the sunken vessel and unable to escape, one of them is discovered dead. The tension escalates as the survivors realise there is a murderer among them, who is preparing to strike again and again… With mounting desperation, people begin to turn on each other. While they struggle to identify who is responsible, each must contend with their own past and the secrets they are hiding. But who is who? And which of them will be next to die? MY REVIEW PRESSURE by Betsy Reavley is a unique and utterly compelling thriller that will suck you in from the very beginning and drag you down into its murky depths along with its characters. Trapped in a submarine at the bottom of the seabed, ten strangers are panicking about if and how they will survive. What was supposed to be a low-budget and dynamic movie soon turns into a horror show of their own when they have technical difficulties with little hope of rescue. But just when they think that things cannot get any worse, one of the group is murdered and that means only one thing ... there is a killer among them and who will be the next victim? Suffocating, claustrophobic, and intense from start to finish, PRESSURE by Betsy Reavley is everything I never knew I wanted in a thriller and more. The characters are distinct and in some cases extremely unlikeable, and you cannot help but put yourself into their shoes and feel the terror of being trapped below the water rush through you as you read (and then add in a killer to the mix for good measure!). This novel is energetic and perfectly paced so that it never feels slow or drawn out, and I really enjoyed the setting of the submarine as it was so different from other thriller books in this regard. With plenty of twists and turns, PRESSURE by Betsy Reavley has got it all and is perfect for thriller fans everywhere. Definitely a must-read for 2018!! AUTHOR BIO Betsy Freeman Reavley is the author of Beneath the Watery Moon and A Worm in the Bottle. Carrion, her latest psychological thriller will be released in November 2014. She was born in Hammersmith, London. As a child she moved around frequently with her family, spending time in London, Provence, Tuscany, Gloucestershire and Cambridgeshire. She showed a flair for literature and writing from a young age and had a particular interest in poetry, of which she was a prolific consumer and producer. In her early twenties she moved to Oxford, where she would eventually meet her husband. During her time in Oxford her interests turned from poetry to novels and she began to develop her own unique style of psychological thriller. Beneath the Watery Moon is Betsy Reavley’s beautifully written first release and tells the macabre story of a young woman battling against mental illness. Beneath the Watery Moon is published by Not So Noble Books and is available as an eBook from Amazon. Betsy Reavley's second novel Carrion is a psychological chiller that address the link between grief and mental illness. Reavley says "I think people are at their most fascinating when they are faced with life's real horrors." This is what I love to write about. Betsy Reavley currently lives in North London, with her husband 2 children, dog, cat and chickens. ABOUT THE BOOK An exceptional storyteller, #1 New York Times bestselling author Robyn Carr beautifully captures the emotionally charged, complex dynamics that come with being part of any family. Readers will laugh and shed a few tears as they discover what it means to be loved, supported and accepted by the people who mean the most. Having left the military, Dakota Jones is at a crossroads in his life. With his elder brother and youngest sister happily settled in Sullivan’s Crossing, he shows up hoping to clear his head before moving on to his next adventure. But, like every visitor to the Crossing, he’s immediately drawn to the down-to-earth people and the seemingly simple way of life. Dakota is unprepared for how quickly things get complicated. As a newcomer, he is on everyone’s radar—especially the single women in town. While he enjoys the attention at first, he’s really only attracted to the one woman who isn’t interested. And spending quality time with his siblings is eye-opening. As he gets to know them, he also gets to know himself and what he truly wants. When all the Jones siblings gather for a family wedding, the four adults are drawn together for the first time in a way they never were as children. As they struggle to accept each other, warts and all, the true nature and strength of their bond is tested. But all of them come to realize that your family are the people who see you for who you really are and love you anyway. And for Dakota, that truth allows him to find the home and family he’s always wanted. MY REVIEW THE FAMILY GATHERING by Robyn Carr is the third book in the Sullivan's Crossing series and another sure-fire hit which can easily be read as a standalone novel. Dakota Jones is used to wandering and the army suited him fine these past seventeen years but now that he has left the army, he decides to look in on his siblings and suddenly finds himself with a need to stick around. And this small town is eager to embrace him, especially the single females in the area ...well most of them anyway. But avoiding commitment has become second nature to Dakota, especially with his upbringing, a relationship is the last thing he wants. But when a certain barwoman sparks his interest in every way, Dakota cannot help but want more. But Sidney is fighting her own demons from the past and knows only too well how much love can break your heart. Add in plenty of drama among his new friends and family, and some determined characters who won't take no for an answer, and THE FAMILY GATHERING by Robyn Carr has everything you need in a compelling family novel with plenty of action. With fascinating and heartwarming characters and a stunning setting, THE FAMILY GATHERING by Robyn Carr is the perfect book to cosy up with one evening and a must-read for fans of contemporary romance. AUTHOR BIO Robyn Carr is a RITA® Award-winning, eleven-time #1 New York Times bestselling author of almost sixty novels, including the critically acclaimed Virgin River series. The third novel (THE FAMILY GATHERING) in her fan-favorite new series, Sullivan's Crossing, will be released in April 2018. Robyn is a recipient of the Romance Writers of America Nora Roberts Lifetime Achievement Award 2016 and in 2017, VIRGIN RIVER was named one of the HarperCollins 200 Iconic Books of the past 200 years. Burns, for providing me with an e-copy of this book for review. ABOUT THE BOOK Can Amy’s rocky start in Paris turn into a happy ever after? Amy didn’t realize how stale her life was until she jetted off to Paris without telling a soul—not even her husband—and had the adventure of a lifetime. Now as she tries to establish herself in the City of Light, she finds that despite a fun (and quirky) group of friends and the ability to indulge in French pastries whenever she wants, reinventing her life is much harder than she imagined. Then on Amy’s thirtieth birthday, two unexpected visitors leave her wondering if she will soon be saying au revoir to Paris and the new life she’s struggled to build. Her estranged husband, Will, shows up—but is he interested in reconciliation or separation? And a young woman who arrives on Amy’s doorstep unleashes chaos that could push Amy out into the street. As Amy’s Parisian dream starts to fall apart, she must decide: return to the stability of Will and Phoenix (if that’s even still an option) or forge her way forward in Paris? Amid secrets and surprises, set in enchanting gardens, cozy cafés, and glittering Parisian streets, Amy must choose between two very different worlds. And each has a claim on her heart. MY REVIEW Following on from the first book in this series (The Paris Effect) we are thrown back into the crazy world of Amy and her new life in Paris. While PARIS EVER AFTER by K.S.R. Burns can be read as a standalone novel, I recommend that you read the books in order as it will give you a greater understanding of Amy and what drives her. As Amy's birthday approaches there have been a lot of changes in her life but none as big as what is happening to her now. And when her estranged husband, Will, suddenly reappears in Paris and a young woman lands on her doorstep, everything that Amy had planned is even more up in the air. Amongst the beauty and magic of Paris, can Amy untangle the secrets and her own emotions enough to find the life that she truly wants or will her french dreams fall to ruins around her? Enjoyable and a little crazy is the best way to describe Amy and PARIS EVER AFTER by K.S.R. Burns but with the sounds and sights of stunning Paris coming alive on every page, plenty of drama and secrets, you certainly won't be bored and it is well worth a read. AUTHOR BIO K. S. R. Burns is the author of THE PARIS EFFECT (Velvet Morning Press 2016), a novel about love, food, France, betrayal, adventure, and escape. (Hint: Nothing is what it seems.) Writing as Karen Burns, she is also the author of THE AMAZING ADVENTURES OF WORKING GIRL: Real-Life Career Advice You Can Actually Use (Running Press 2009).
