From the Booker-shortlisted author comes a sensuous, evocative novel exploring the lives of women in Victorian London, for fans of Sarah Waters, Emma Donoghue, and Kate Atkinson.

Apricot Place, a cul-de-sac in Walworth: in 1851, a leafy village on the fringes of a rapidly swelling London; in 2011, a clamorous neighborhood where Madeleine moves when she loses her job as a lecturer. Immersing herself in local history, she reads London Labour and the London Poor, Henry Mayhew’s treatise documenting Victorian working class lives.

Joseph Benson is one of Mayhew’s researchers, employed to interview the city’s manifold poor, from market traders and shoe-shiners to pickpockets and fraudsters. A family man with mouths to feed, he is tasked with coaxing testimony from prostitutes. He roams the labyrinthine slums of Southwark, but gaudily-painted faces turn hostile when asked for revelations—and Joseph is not immune to the temptations they offer. Yet when he meets Mrs. Dulcimer, the elegant proprietor of a Walworth boarding house, Joseph’s eyes will slowly be opened to the realities of women’s lives.

As these entwined stories unfold, alive with the sensations of London past and present, the two eras brush against each other: a breath at Madeleine’s neck, a voice in her head—the city’s ghosts echoing through time. Rendered in sensuous, immediate prose, The Walworth Beauty is a haunting tale of desire and exploitation, isolation and loss, and the faltering search for human connection; Michèle Roberts at her intoxicating, masterful best.

MY REVIEW

I wasn't sure what to expect from THE WALWORTH BEAUTY by Michèle Roberts and was pleasantly surprised at this deep and meaningful tale of love and life moving from the past to present. In 1851 Joseph's eyes are harshly opened to the reality of life for a woman as he gathers research for Henry Mayhew, while in 2011 Madeleine throws herself back into the past as she becomes engrossed in Mayhew's findings. Through Roberts excellent writing skills that ebb and flow at the perfect moment, the reader becomes a part of the tale effortlessly as you want to soak in everything this story has to offer. THE WALWORTH BEAUTY by Michèle Roberts is an enigmatic and often unsettling story that is about women at its heart - their wants, their needs, their desires, hopes & dreams, and their harsh realities, which transcend time and place to capture the attention of us all. A captivating and thought-provoking read.

BLURB

In the witty, sizzling finale to award-winning author Nancy Herkness’s Wager of Hearts series, a haunted writer conquers his demons with the help of a feisty muse and a passion that doesn’t play by the book.

Gavin Miller, the billionaire author of a bestselling thriller series, struggles with a grim secret: he hasn’t written a word in more than a year.
Writer’s block is killing his spirit and jeopardizing his contracts with his publisher and his Hollywood producers. Prodded by his agent, Gavin reluctantly agrees to see Allie Nichols, a sassy physical therapist tasked with treating the novelist’s severe neck and shoulder pain—and maybe his writer’s block, too.

The tempestuous Gavin and no-nonsense Allie soon find themselves entangled in a steamy affair that sparks Gavin’s creativity again. But their manipulative ex-lovers and Gavin’s lingering childhood scars threaten their happily ever after. Can Gavin and Allie find their way to love when the stakes are high and the obstacles are overwhelming?

MY REVIEW

This is the final instalment of the Wager of Hearts series, and while it can be read as a standalone, I highly recommend reading the series from start to finish, as these characters will really get under your skin and burrow into your heart.

Gavin Millar cannot overcome his writer's block and with pressure mounting from all sides, his mental anguish is showing itself in a physical way too with severe back pain, but he feels it is no less than he deserves. Against his wishes, he agrees to see a physical therapist recommended by his agent and while Allie eases his physical pain, she also starts to work her way under his surly attitude and helps to free his creative spirit too. Allie is trying to make a fresh start with her life after her recent divorce to her childhood sweetheart, and she really needs her freelance business to be a success. But she did not bet on the instant attraction to the brooding Mr. Millar. The more they get to know each other, the more Allie wants to do whatever she can to ease Gavin's burdens, but she has learned from the past that she cannot give everything for nothing in return. As their unbelievable chemistry explodes, Gavin will do whatever he can to keep her by his side, but as the pain from his past collides with his present, will is fear of trust destroy everything? And then there is the matter of the wager...

With excellent characters that you will instantly care about, enchanting settings, and vivid descriptions that pull you into the story, THE VIP DOUBLES DOWN by Nancy Herkness, has everything you want and more from a romance novel. Allie is one of my favourite characters from the series as she is so caring and selfless, but yet strong enough to stand up for herself when she has too. Gavin is the epitome of the brooding writer, who doesn't want to face the demons from his past that are eating him up from the inside out. The development of the relationship between Allie and Gavin was so enjoyable to watch, and their heat together will leave you blushing!!! THE VIP DOUBLES DOWN by Nancy Herkness, like all of her other stories, is essential reading for romance fans and I cannot wait to see what is next!!

For one apprentice assassin, the clock is ticking . . .

Pyrre Lakatur doesn’t like the description skullsworn. It doesn’t capture the beauty of her devotion to Ananshael, God of Death. And she’s not an assassin, but a priestess. Or she will be, if she can pass her final trial. The problem isn’t killing, as Pyrre has spent her life training for this. The problem is love. To pass the trial, she will have fourteen days to kill seven people detailed in an ancient song, including one true love, ‘who will not come again’. However, Pyrre has never been in love, time is short, and if she fails she’ll be given to her god.

Pyrre’s not afraid to die, but she hates to fail. So a month before the trial begins, she returns to the violent city of her birth, where she once offered an abusive father to the god. Here Pyrre hopes to find love – and end it with the edge of her knife.

MY REVIEW

Having never read anything by Brian Staveley before, I was a little unsure how I would fare with SKULLSWORN as it is a prequel of sorts to his already successful, The Chronicle of the Unhewn Throne series. But I worried needlessly as I was instantly sucked into this captivating, brutal, fantasy world. In this standalone tale, we follow the journey of Pyrre Lakatur as she prepares for her final trial before becoming a Priestess of Ananshael - and what a journey it is. With wonderfully detailed settings, rich and evocative language, I became completely engrossed in this harsh world where one must sacrifice everything to achieve their goals. With blood, death, and love twisted together, this perfectly paced novel really stands out in the fantasy genre, and I cannot wait to read the remainder of the series. SKULLSWORN by Brian Staveley is a must for fantasy fiction fans worldwide.

BOOK RATING - 📖📖📖📖📖 5

*Warning* Mature themes and one hell of a cliff hanger!

MY REVIEW
J.D. Hughes, you are the reason I did absolutely nothing today - I began reading  MY BEAUTIFUL DISASTER at lunchtime and could not stop until I got to the end, which left me desperate for part two of this electrifying story. Be warned this story is sassy, sexy, and strong, with two main characters who are desperate to keep their pasts buried, but as their lives finally seem to be merging together in a beautiful way, their heartbreak will resurface at the worst possible time.

Sophia is the perfect female character as she is a survivor who can take care of herself while always protecting her heart and those she loves. So when she finds herself agreeing to her boss' half-assed scheme of a convenient marriage, she cannot help but wonder if she is going crazy. But the closer she gets to Daniel, the more she begins to open the shuttered door to her damaged heart. But can she really trust him or herself to walk away unhurt when it is over?

Daniel needs someone he can trust to fulfil the stipulations of his Uncle's will, and Sophia fits the bill perfectly. So what if he is attracted to her - nothing will ever come of it. But when his life and Sophia's is threatened, everything starts to spiral out of control, and when a secret from his past is made known, will he lose the only person that matters to him?

MY BEAUTIFUL DISASTER by J.D. Hughes is one of those books that gets under your skin and makes you want more. I laughed out loud, felt the scorching heat jump off the page, and felt unbelievable sadness, as Sophia and Daniel struggled to come to terms with what they really want and feel for each other. These characters are so well written and the chemistry between them is off the charts!!! MY BEAUTIFUL DISASTER by J.D. Hughes is more than just a sexy romance - it is a story of damaged hearts, friendship, love, and finding your place in this messed up world. Warning - this book does end with a cliffhanger but luckily for you MY BEAUTIFUL DISASTER Part Two is ready and waiting for you to download.

BOOK RATING - 📖📖📖📖📖 5++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

I am delighted to share a little insight from the author into the fantastic character of Sophia, from this captivting novel. Happy reading!!!

CHARACTER SPOTLIGHT

Sophia Louise Lewis is the leading lady in My Beautiful Disaster. She is twenty-six years old and works as a secretary for Daniel Dukes at Dukes Industries. Unmarried and single is the way she likes it until Daniel offers her an indecent proposal. She’s fiercely strong and independent, has a heart of gold, and has a past that haunts her every day of her life.

When did you create her?

I created Sophia Lewis around five years ago. I had a story line of her background in mind and needed to bring her to life, in my mind’s eye anyway. She deserved to have her story told because of her dark and secretive past. Essentially, I needed her to be happy so had to complete her story more so than anything else I’ve ever written. If she was happy, I would be too. I’d written a book called You Have My Heart last year in which the leading lady was scared of her own shadow to begin with, yet became strong by the end. For Sophia, well, she’s different. She was born strong. Throughout the book, you see her vulnerable side every so often but make no mistake, she’s a badass, due to her horrific past. I wanted to write a character related to the strong independent women I know and Sophia was perfect in every way.

Did you write the book to accommodate Sophia or Sophia to accommodate the book?

I wrote the book to accommodate Sophia. Her story was already cemented in my mind and the book evolved because of her.

What do you like most about her?

I like that she has a no nonsense attitude but knows how to reign it in when needed. I love that she grew up surrounded by bikers and that she can hold her own. Her attitude and one liners are brilliant but most of all, I love the way that whatever has happened to her regarding her past, she still manages to paint on a smile and has a good heart. She’s funny, witty, intelligent, beautiful and a pure soul.

What do you like least about her?

Nothing. I love her. I hope my daughter grows up to be as smart, proud, caring and as wonderful as Sophia. Actually, I hate that she’s so troubled and finds it hard to let go of her demons. But without those elements, I wouldn’t have had a story.

Did your early readers/editorial team like Sophia to start with or did you have to change her in any way?

Everybody who has read My Beautiful Disaster so far loves Sophia. She’s very easy to relate to because she has a natural charm about her that you fall in love with or admire. I couldn’t and wouldn’t change Sophia for anything. . . Well, except her back story. Some chapters took me months to write because I kept crying. She’s an exceptional young woman.

Does she have any similarities with anyone real?

Sophia has many traits of my friends. Each part of her is made up of unique parts of my best friends. I see myself in her too. Her strength is equal to mine.

What are your plans for her?

My characters, especially Sophia, will always have a happy ending, even if there are trials and tribulations to overcome first. My Beautiful Disaster is a two-part series. I couldn’t fit her story into one book. And I was sad to let her go.

Would you be friends in real life?

Hell yes. She ‘d be a blast to have a night on the town with. I imagine Sophia would be the most perfect best friend ever. She loves wine, so what’s not to like?

The American Girl: A page-turning mother-daughter story for fans of Maeve Binchy

BLURB
Boston 1968. Rose Moroney is seventeen, smart, spirited – and pregnant. She wants to marry her boyfriend. Her ambitious parents have other plans. She is sent to Ireland, their birthplace, to deliver her daughter in a Mother and Baby home. Against Rose's will, her baby is taken for adoption.

Dublin 2013. Martha Sheeran’s life has come undone. Her marriage is over, and her husband has moved on with unsettling speed. Under pressure from her teenage daughter, she starts looking for the woman who gave her up for adoption more than forty years before.

Martha's search for her birth mother leads her to the heart of long-buried family secrets and forces her to question everything she thought she knew. When her first love, Paudie Carmody, re-enters the frame, she's also forced to take a hard look at her own life.

From Boston to rural Ireland; from Dublin back to Boston, The American Girl is a heart-warming and enthralling story about mothers and daughters, love and cruelty and, ultimately, the struggle for acceptance – and the embrace of new horizons.

MY REVIEW
In this beautiful novel of love, despair, and heartbreak. we embark on the journey of two women from different times as they try to come to terms with what has happened in their lives. In Boston in 1968 Rose Moroney finds herself pregnant to the man that she loves, but whom her parents abhor, and so Rose is shipped off to Ireland and forced to give away her baby. In Dublin, it is 2013 and Martha's life has imploded around her, so in trying to figure out her next move, she decides to get answers to the past first by beginning her search for information on her birth mother.

As the narrative moves from the past to present, I became completely immersed in both of the character's emotions, and time flew past as I was lost in this captivating story. Be warned - you will need a box of tissues close at hand, as the words will get under your skin and break your heart. As a mother, and an Irish woman, THE AMERICAN GIRL by Rachael English deeply struck a chord with me as we must recognise that while this is a compelling novel for us, for far too many people there are elements of their real experiences echoed in these pages, which brings an even deeper level of feeling to this book. THE AMERICAN GIRL by Rachael English will leave an indelible mark on your heart and mind as you read the first page and become enveloped by Rose and Miriam lives. Rachael English is a superb author who weaves a tale like no other, and I'm already looking forward to her next book.

A USA Today Bestseller

'[A] well-paced, evocative, and adventurous historical novel...' --Publishers Weekly, STARRED Review

'This is a book in which storylines twist, spiral and come together again in an ending as explosive as a poof of smoke from your chimney... or a top hat.' --Oprah.com

'Smart, intricately plotted... a richly imagined thriller.' --PEOPLE magazine

'This debut novel is historical fiction that blends magic, mystery, and romance.' --Boston Globe, Pick of the Week

'It's a captivating yarn... Macallister, like the Amazing Arden, mesmerizes her audience. No sleight of hand is necessary. An ambitious heroine and a captivating tale are all the magic she needs.' --Washington Post

The Amazing Arden is the most famous female illusionist of her day, renowned for her notorious trick of sawing a man in half on stage. But one night she swaps her trademark saw for an axe.

When Arden's husband is found dead later that night, the answer seems clear, most of all to young policeman Virgil Holt.

Captured and taken into custody, all seems set for Arden's swift confession. But she has a different story to tell. Even handcuffed and alone, Arden is far from powerless, and what she reveals is as unbelievable as it is spellbinding.

A magical and mysterious historical thriller, perfect for fans of The Night Circus and Water for Elephants.

MY REVIEW
Today I am on the blog tour for THE MAGICIAN'S LIE by Greer Macallister and I cannot wait to share my thoughts on this hugely successful novel. The concept of this story immediately fascinated me as I was always interested in the art and mystery of the magical world of illusion, and the people behind the facade. So going into this book I was prepared to be dazzled, but this story is so much more than dazzling.

It is 1905 and Officer Holt, who is struggling to deal with his own problems, stumbles across The Amazing Arden, the most famous female illusionist of their time, who is currently the number one suspect in the murder of her husband. Arresting her and bringing her back to his office in the dead of night, Holt is determined to get the truth out of this woman, And so begins Arden's story of the woman behind the magic. As the narrative switches from her past to her present, the brutality of the harsh world she lived in is mixed with love, honesty, and the determination of a survivor. From the beginning, I was hooked by this dark, expressive, soul-stirring novel that reels you in and doesn't let you go until the story completely unfolds. The characters are absorbing, the magic is captivating, and the story is unsettling in a good way. THE MAGICIAN'S LIE by Greer Macallister is a remarkable read so be prepared to be enthralled!

MY REVIEW
Today I am on the blog tour for WILL TO LIVE by Rachel Amphlett and I cannot wait to spread the word about this addictive, terrifying, compelling crime fiction novel.

Detective Sergeant Kay Hunter is confused when she gets the call to attend the scene of an apparent suicide at the train tracks - why do they need homicide on the scene? However, looks can be deceiving and it is soon obvious to the police that they have a killer on the loose. As Kay and her colleagues start the hunt to uncover this psychopath, Kay must also deal with her own private investigation into who framed her a few years ago resulting in devastating consequences for her personal life. But when a second murder occurs, Kay knows that time is against her. Will they figure it out before things get even worse?

Immediately thrown into the action from the very first page, WILL TO LIVE by Rachel Amphlett is a rollercoaster of terror, uneasiness, and shocking twists and turns. The second book in this series, I felt even more in tune with the very realistic Kay Hunter - a woman with flaws, humour, integrity, and determination. With expert detail throughout, this novel is not for the light-hearted, and getting to know some of the other police officers a little more, like Carys, really added to the depth of the story. Fast-paced with plenty of suspense, WILL TO LIVE by Rachel Amphlett does not disappoint and yet again brings something unique and intriguing to the genre. A must-read for crime fiction fans everywhere.
