Book length - 8th February 2018 Publisher - Raven Books (Bloomsbury) Book Depository - www.bookdepository.com Amazon UK - www.amazon.co.uk Amazon US - www.amazon.com I voluntarily reviewed a copy of this book from Netgalley.com ABOUT THE BOOK How do you stop a murder that’s already happened? At a gala party thrown by her parents, Evelyn Hardcastle will be killed--again. She's been murdered hundreds of times, and each day, Aiden Bishop is too late to save her. Doomed to repeat the same day over and over, Aiden's only escape is to solve Evelyn Hardcastle's murder and conquer the shadows of an enemy he struggles to even comprehend--but nothing and no one are quite what they seem. Deeply atmospheric and ingeniously plotted, The Seven Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle is a highly original debut that will appeal to fans of Kate Atkinson and Agatha Christie. MY REVIEW THE SEVEN DEATHS OF EVELYN HARDCASTLE by Stuart Turton is a masterpiece of subterfuge, mystery, and originality as we try to weave our way through the lies and deception that are taking place on an old country estate where nothing is what it seems. Waking up on the forest floor screaming 'Anna' isn't usually the way Aiden Bishop wakes up but as he struggles to remember who he is and what on earth he is doing at this private party held by the Hardcastle family, it is only the beginning of this nightmare. For Aiden is bound here by some unstoppable force and he will wake up every day in the body of another guest until he can uncover who is responsible for the murder of Evelyn Hardcastle. But he is not alone in his quest, and if Aiden is ever to win his freedom he must figure out what is truly going on and who, if anyone, he can trust ... With so many twists and turns, exquisite descriptions, and a plot that is so refreshing and unique that it will capture your attention from the very first line, THE SEVEN DEATHS OF EVELYN HARDCASTLE by Stuart Turton is everything I never knew I wanted in a gripping story and I could not put it down. Imagine a mixture of Sherlock Holmes meets a run-down Downtown Abbey, and it might give you an idea of the atmosphere and setting, but harder to describe are the distinctive characters that carefully show you what is happening but can we, the readers, trust what they are showing us? The drama is flawless and there are so many times that you will think you have it figured out only to find you're mistaken again. This MUST be made into a tv drama or movie as I could picture every page as I was reading it and would make a wonderful viewing experience, and as for that ending ...WOW! THE SEVEN DEATHS OF EVELYN HARDCASTLE by Stuart Turton is a superb debut and I cannot wait to read more from this talented author. Author Bio: Stuart Turton is a freelance travel journalist who has previously worked in Shanghai and Dubai. The Seven Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle is his debut novel. He is the winner of the Brighton and Hove Short Story Prize and was longlisted for the BBC Radio 4 Opening Lines competition. He lives in West London with his wife. ABOUT THE BOOK Jack Tideswell’s parents died in a tragic diving accident while exploring the underwater ruins of the ancient Pharos lighthouse in Egypt. So Jack wants nothing to do with adventure. Until that is, a seagull delivers a strange disc, addressed to him in his own handwriting. In the blink of an eye, all kinds of magic are let loose, sending Jack on a dangerous journey. Can he learn to navigate time before it’s too late to save the one person who can help him unravel the secrets of the disc? Whether he likes it or not, there’s no more hiding away. And no looking back. Especially when Alpha is watching. A wolf who sees all there is to see … For readers aged 10 plus, The Mirror of Pharos is a contemporary fantasy with a hint of sci-fi. MY REVIEW There is a quote on the back cover of this book that compares THE MIRROR OF PHAROS to the early Harry Potter books which always makes me a little weary when I'm about to start a book, as I'm a HUGE fan of Harry Potter (aka obsessed!). But I'm delighted to say that this comparison is completely justified as THE MIRROR OF PHAROS will transport children and adults alike into a world of adventure, secrets, and magic, and you will not want this story to end. Jack Tideswell has not had an easy life so far, losing his loving parents in a diving accident when he was a little boy, and now having to deal with bullies at every turn, But he understands that he is lucky to have his eccentric Nan and his best friend Charlie who are always there for him, no matter what. Jack just wants to live a quiet life and keep his head down but magic is a part of him and when he receives an unusual disc in the post it will launch him into an adventure of a lifetime where he will discover so much about himself and those he loves. THE MIRROR OF PHAROS by J.S. Landor is a compelling and absorbing tale of friendship, danger, magic, and strength, and I absolutely adored this story which I have now handed over to my eldest child to devour. It has that special something which really makes it stand out and I really could imagine seeing this on the silver screen. The characters are likeable, especially Nan and Charlie, and the fantasy element is spot on. THE MIRROR OF PHAROS by J.S. Landor also comes with access to a beautiful website (www.jslandor.com) which allows you to read snippets of the book, meet the characters, and view the stunning artwork that coincides with the book, which is such a wonderful added extra to the whole story, so make sure you check it out. This is a must-read for adults and children alike who love a great story with that extra dash of magic and mayhem that makes this fabulous story come alive! Author Bio: Jenny has worked as a journalist, farmer and publishing editor. She has an MA in Writing for Young People and has edited several children's books. The Mirror of Pharos, published in November 2017, is her debut children's novel. Book length - 336 pages Publisher - Viking Book Depository - www.bookdepository.com Amazon UK - www.amazon.co.uk Amazon US - www.amazon.com I want to thank Penguin Publishing Group for providing me with a copy of this book from Edelweiss. ABOUT THE BOOK "The first rule is that you don't fall in love, ' he said... 'There are other rules too, but that is the main one. No falling in love. No staying in love. No daydreaming of love. If you stick to this you will just about be okay.'" A love story across the ages - and for the ages - about a man lost in time, the woman who could save him, and the lifetimes it can take to learn how to live Tom Hazard has a dangerous secret. He may look like an ordinary 41-year-old, but owing to a rare condition, he's been alive for centuries. Tom has lived history--performing with Shakespeare, exploring the high seas with Captain Cook, and sharing cocktails with Fitzgerald. Now, he just wants an ordinary life. So Tom moves back to London, his old home, to become a high school history teacher--the perfect job for someone who has witnessed the city's history first hand. Better yet, a captivating French teacher at his school seems fascinated by him. But the Albatross Society, the secretive group which protects people like Tom, has one rule: never fall in love. As painful memories of his past and the erratic behavior of the Society's watchful leader threaten to derail his new life and romance, the one thing he can't have just happens to be the one thing that might save him. Tom will have to decide once and for all whether to remain stuck in the past, or finally begin living in the present. How to Stop Time is a bighearted, wildly original novel about losing and finding yourself, the inevitability of change, and how with enough time to learn, we just might find happiness. MY REVIEW Tom Hazard isn't like ordinary people no matter how desperately he wishes he was. For Tom has a rare condition which means for every fifteen years of his life he ages just one, so when we see a forty-one-year-old man he is in fact over four hundred years old. While initially, this may sound like an exciting and adventurous life to lead but as we delve into Tom's many pasts and lives we begin to realise how lonely and heartbreaking this existence is for him. 'Protected' by a secret society who demand obedience, Tom must never connect with anyone or have any close relationships and time has shown Tom how cruel it can be taking those he loved away from him. But in 2017 as Tom tries to find some semblance of a normal life working as a school teacher, he cannot help but feel something for a fellow teacher who is determined to figure him out. Moving seamlessly from past to present HOW TO STOP TIME by Matt Haig is a truly special book that makes you feel, really feel, every emotion as you turn each page. The beautiful prose is so eloquent that you are carried along with the flow of the story and even as so many parts of Tom's life will make your heart ache for him, you cannot stop admiring the words that describe his despair. HOW TO STOP TIME by Matt Haig shows us how the past can often be repeated in all of its beauty and horror, that an ordinary life is one to be cherished and appreciated, and for all intents and purposes we need to live now, love now, cry now, and be whoever we wish to be now, for nobody knows what tomorrow may bring - a truly stunning novel that will make you a Matt Haig fan for life. Author Bio: Matt Haig is a British author for children and adults. His memoir Reasons to Stay Alive was a number one bestseller, staying in the British top ten for 46 weeks. His children's book A Boy Called Christmas was a runaway hit and is translated in over 25 languages. It is being made into a film by Studio Canal and The Guardian called it an 'instant classic'. His novels for adults include the award-winning The Radleys and The Humans. He won the TV Book Club 'book of the series', and has been shortlisted for a Specsavers National Book Award. The Humans was chosen as a World Book Night title. His children's novels have won the Smarties Gold Medal, the Blue Peter Book of the Year, been shortlisted for the Waterstones Children's Book Prize and nominated for the Carnegie Medal three times. His books have received praise from Neil Gaiman, Stephen Fry, Jeanette Winterson, Joanne Harris, Patrick Ness, Ian Rankin and SJ Watson, among others. The Guardian summed up his writing as 'funny, clever and quite, quite lovely' by The Times and the New York Times called him 'a writer of great talent'. ABOUT THE BOOK The only thing worth killing for is family. Everyone said she had her father’s eyes. A killer’s eyes. Nadia knew that on the bitterly cold streets of Moscow, she could never escape her past – but in just a few days, she would finally be free. Bound to work for Kadinsky for five years, she has just one last mission to complete. Yet when she is instructed to capture The Rose, a military weapon shrouded in secrecy, Nadia finds herself trapped in a deadly game of global espionage. And the only man she can trust is the one sent to spy on her… MY REVIEW 66 METRES by J.F. Kirwan is a spy thriller with a difference and a must-read for fans of the genre. Nadia's life in Russia has never been normal with a killer for a father and a cold, distant mother. Her love for her sister is what keeps her going and when their lives are threatened, Nadia signs away her life for five years to gain freedom for her and her sibling. Five years of training and missions for a Russian criminal thug has certainly taken its toll but as Nadia finds herself diving into the Thames to retrieve a package known as The Rose, this will be her final operation and she can live a happy, quiet life with her sister. But Nadia should know that nothing is ever straight-forward and so begins a dangerous, action-packed race against time ... 66 METRES by J.F. Kirwan was such an interesting and different read, especially with the added detail of diving and all that entails. Nadia has had such a harsh life and even though she has become hardened and tough from what her life has become, there is still a sense of vulnerability and she has retained the element of knowing right from wrong which is often missing from main characters in this genre. The plot is well-paced, and while it did take me a little while to get into the story, I soon couldn't put it down. 66 METRES by J.F. Kirwan is a masterly story of hardship, danger, lies, and power and is definitely worth a read. Author Bio: J. F. Kirwan is the author of the Nadia Laksheva thriller series for HarperCollins. Having worked in accident investigation and prevention in nuclear, offshore oil and gas and aviation sectors, he uses his experience of how accidents initially build slowly, then race towards a climax, to plot his novels. An instructor in both scuba diving and martial arts, he travels extensively all over the world, and loves to set his novels in exotic locations. He is also an insomniac who writes in the dead of night. His favourite authors include Lee Child, David Baldacci and Andy McNab. ABOUT THE BOOKS Here Come The Trolls Through gaps in the roof we didn’t repair through cracks in the walls we pretended weren’t there . . . the trolls have come creeping while we were all sleeping. Trolls on your chair, trolls in your bed–is anything worse than a troll on your head? What happens when your house is invaded by trolls–mischievous creatures who do nothing but cause havoc and mayhem? Find out in this zany and charming book which tells you how to get rid of them for good and make your house a troll-free zone! Day of the Trolls Fart-Fart and all the trolls are back! Join them in the shopping mall where they go wild, causing havoc as they overrun the place. But when they follow sign saying All Trolls – This Way, things turn out very differently to what Flycatcher, Bumscratcher, SnotFace and the rest of them expected... MY REVIEW I was delighted to take part in the blog tour for these wonderful books as I love to discover new authors that will snare my kid's attention and give them a giggle, and the Troll books do just that. In rhyming verse, we are opened up to the world of the Trolls firstly as they sneak into the cracks and holes in your house and cause mayhem, and secondly when we spend the day with the crazy creatures as they get themselves into all sorts of trouble. There are laughter and comedy and plenty of snot and fart which is always a hit in our house. The illustrations are lovely and really special as they draw the eye and we had plenty of conversations about specific drawings throughout the book. Both of these books are a must-have for your bookshelf if you have kids who love a good picture book with plenty to hold their interest and I look forward to more from the Trolls and Ron Butlin. Author Bio: With a reputation as an international prize-winning novelist, Ron Butlin has also been Edinburgh's Poet-Laureate. ABOUT THE BOOK Rachel’s dead and she’s never coming back. Or is she? As she prepares for her wedding to Dominic, Catherine has never been happier or more excited about her future. But when she receives an anonymous package—a familiar snow globe with a very grisly addition—that happiness is abruptly threatened by secrets from her past. Her older sister, Rachel, died on a skiing holiday as a child. But Rachel was no angel: she was vicious and highly disturbed, and she made Catherine’s life a misery. Catherine has spent years trying to forget her dead sister’s cruel tricks. Now someone has sent her Rachel’s snow globe—the first in a series of ominous messages… While Catherine struggles to focus on her new life with Dominic, someone out there seems intent on tormenting her. But who? And why now? She doesn't have the answers - and in one final question lies her greatest fear. Is Rachel still alive? MY REVIEW FORGET HER NAME by Jane Holland is a twisted, gripping, novel that will have you on the edge of your seat, doubting yourself throughout, and it will also give you a cramp in your hand as I am telling you now, you will not be able to put it down until you reach the very end. It is a wonderful time in Catherine's life as she is planning her dream wedding and future with the man of her dreams, Dominic. But when she receives a package in the post related to her sister, Rachel, who died years ago, it threatens everything that Catherine holds dear. As the torment continues, Catherine needs to know who is doing this to her, and why. Could Rachel still be alive? I do not want to say too much about this riveting plot as you really must read it for yourself but suffice to say I LOVED this story. With so many twists and turns, I was sure I had it figured out when suddenly something would happen and I was back to square one again. This psychological thriller is perfectly paced and I became deeply invested in what was happening and was desperate to uncover the truth. FORGET HER NAME by Jane Holland is a must-read for thriller fans and I cannot wait to read more from this talented author.
