ABOUT THE BOOK A woman in a coma. The man who could save her life—if only he could speak. When young, beautiful Cassie Jensen arrives unconscious to the intensive care ward at St. Catherine’s hospital after being struck in a hit-and-run while out walking her dog, chief nurse Alice Marlowe thinks she looks familiar. She starts digging deeper into Cassie’s relationships, only to discover something about her patient that she’d been keeping secret from everyone, including her devoted husband and family. Soon Alice finds herself obsessed with her patient’s past and future, even willing to put her own career on the line in her single-minded search for answers. Frank, a patient on the same ward who has locked-in syndrome, can hear and see everything around him but cannot speak. Soon he comes to understand that Cassie’s life is still in danger. While the police continue to look for clues, only Frank holds the truth, but he’s unable to communicate it. As the novel flashes between points of view, the reader will get closer and closer to the truth of who Cassie Jensen was, and why she was out on the road that fateful night . . . MY REVIEW How have I never heard of this book before now?!? A gripping psychological read, this story hooked me from the very first line and kept me on the edge of my seat to the last. Centred around a hospital ward, we get to know Alice who is excellent at her job and really connects and cares about her patients. There is Frank who she believes is suffering from locked-in syndrome, even though her boss disagrees, and the close-knit group of staff who feel like family. But Alice is struggling with her personal life in many ways and at times feels overwhelmed by what she thought her life would be like. But when young, beautiful Cassie Jensen arrives on her ward in a coma after a hit and run, Alice feels a strong connection to this woman, and as Alice begins to uncover snippets of Cassie's life she feels compelled to find out exactly what happened to this young woman. Frank may hold all the answers if only he could find some way to communicate ... This thrilling story is told from the point of view of Alice, Frank, and Cassie and moves easily from past to present to give us the whole picture. This is not a high-action, fast-paced novel but rather a tense, creepy, and disturbing tale of love, loss, and betrayal of the highest order. IF YOU KNEW HER by Emily Elgar is a compelling psychological thriller that really got under my skin and I could easily imagine it on our tv screens as a crime drama - a fantastic story by a new author and I cannot wait for more from Emily Elgar. Author Bio: I’m an 80’s child and grew up mostly in the West Country, but I’ve had spells in New York, London, and Southern Africa. I now live in East Sussex with my husband and our cat, A-Dog. I started taking writing seriously when I was accepted onto the Faber Academy six month novel writing course in 2012. At the time, I was a support worker for male, female and transgender sex workers in London. I took the course because I love writing, not because I was necessarily seeking a change in career. It felt too audacious to transform myself into a novelist! After some knocks, I wrote – in a frenzy at 4am one morning – what is now the preface to If You Knew Her. From the off, it felt different to everything I’d written before. The words galloped out of me. I met my agent, the brilliant Nelle Andrew, soon after the course finished. Nelle sent an early draft of If You Knew Her to publishers and in October 2014 I signed a contract with the fantastic Lucy Malagoni at Little, Brown. What followed was an intense, but enjoyable, two years of completely reworking the book. The result is If You Knew Her. I really hope you enjoy it. ABOUT THE BOOK Dan is the kind of gay man for whom the Noughties might have been named. Warm, witty and serially promiscuous, his heart melts at the sight of a chocolate brown Labrador — but with men, it’s a different matter. He’s thirty-nine and as single as ever, not counting the couple he just met online. An arrangement that looks oddly like it’s going somewhere, until Dan gets fired from his job in advertising. With time out and a payoff in his pocket, summer presents a world of possibilities; just as the memories surface of the ex he blames for the thinly-veiled chaos of his life. From London to Ljubljana, a yen for closure sets Dan on the trail of the man who fed his ego into a shredder. Through an eerie encounter at the home of the Olympiad and a sleepover at the Dutch Embassy, run-ins with a fading porn star and the celestial manifestation of Margaret Thatcher, he ultimately confronts his past. Until, with his Big Four-O rapidly approaching, destiny beckons from where he least expects it. ‘Full of wit, comedy and unflinching honesty … Like reading a gay Nick Hornby. This is clever contemporary fiction at its finest.’ Bleach House Library MY REVIEW DINNER AT THE HAPPY SKELETON by Chris Chalmers is a witty, charming, and honest story of love and friendship, and I enjoyed this book from start to finish. Dan is almost forty, single after a failed relationship that still affects him, and now unemployed when he is made redundant from this advertising job. Happy to float from one sexual encounter to another, Dan isn't looking for a boyfriend anymore, and now that he has some money in his pocket he decides that the world is his oyster and that it is time for some adventure. How much trouble can one man get into after all?? With caring and entertaining characters in the form of Dan's friends, hilarious escapades, and settings that will take your breath away with their distinct descriptions, DINNER AT THE HAPPY SKELETON by Chris Chalmers is a thoroughly unique read that will keep you hooked from the very start. While Dan definitely lives life to the fullest in this story you cannot help but feel that this lovely, caring, man is lonely and I wanted more for him. I wanted him to find that something or someone that would fill his soul with fire and passion. If you want to know if he finds it, you will have to read the book for yourself! DINNER AT THE HAPPY SKELETON by Chris Chalmers will make you laugh out loud, and is the perfect story to brighten up these dark January nights. Author Bio: Chris Chalmers arrived unexpectedly following a Beatles' concert at Southport Floral Hall when his mum was induced by the stomping. His career as a published author began aged six with a poem, Jumbo Jabber, in The Liverpool Echo. The editor, retitling it Elephants Are Our Favourites, gave him a taste of the collaborative process that was to play a major role in his subsequent career in advertising. After many years and a few awards creating campaigns at top London agencies for everything from The Economist to ballet shoes, Chris took the plunge into the world of contemporary fiction. His first published novel, Five To One, is now available with further titles for adults and children to follow. He lives in South-West London with his partner, a quite famous concert pianist. Chris was once the understudy on Mastermind, has travelled to 40 different countries, and swum with iguanas. He's written a diary for 41 years and never missed a night. Book length - 306 pages Publisher - On Call Book Depository - www.bookdepository.com Amazon UK - www.amazon.co.uk Amazon US - www.amazon.com I want to thank Christine Webber for the opportunity to take part in this blog tour, a wonderful giveaway, and for providing me with a copy of this book for review. ABOUT THE BOOK It’s Who We Are is a story about five friends in their fifties who find themselves dealing with unforeseen upheaval as they uncover long-hidden and devastating family secrets. It takes place between October 2016 and June 2017, against a backdrop of all the political uncertainty and change in the UK, Europe and America. The novel is set in East Anglia, London and Ireland, and explores the importance of friendship, kindness and identity – and how vital it is to reach for what enhances rather than depletes you. MY REVIEW From the description of this book, I expected an easy, relatively predictable, enjoyable story that I could pick up and put down as and when I was in the mood. But IT'S WHO WE ARE by Christine Webber was more compelling and intriguing than I ever imagined and it never left my hand until I finished the final sentence (surviving the next day on four hours sleep was well worth it, trust me!). The story centres around five main characters who are all in their late fifties and loosely linked together from their past. But as each character undergoes a drastic change in their lives, old friendships will reform, new friendships will blossom, and feelings of love and laughter will give them the strength they need to survive their trials and tribulations. From affairs, an unplanned pregnancy, drastic career changes that will change so many lives, new love, and family illness, this story has it all. But let me tell you there will be plenty of shocking twists and turns along the way that will leave your mouth hanging open in surprise. With some beautiful scenery and a look at the changing political world and how it can affect your life on a daily basis, IT'S WHO WE ARE by Christine Webber is a story that really does have it all - drama, romance, secrets, tension, laughter, and friendship. This was my first time reading Christine Webber but it definitely will not be my last. IT'S WHO WE ARE by Christine Webber is a stunning contemporary story about friendship, life, and how you are never too old to go after what you want. A truly wonderful read!! Author Bio: Christine Webber originally trained as an opera singer but had to re-think her career plans when her voice professor commented: ‘Your voice is ok, but your legs are very much better!’ Musical theatre beckoned. There was some success. But not much. However, eventually, in 1978, she became a news presenter for Anglia TV. At last she had found something she enjoyed that other people thought she was good at. It was such a relief that she stayed for 12 very happy years. Towards the end of that period, her first novel, In Honour Bound, was published. Next, she became an agony aunt for various publications including TV Times, Best, Dare and BBC Parenting. She also wrote a column for the Scotsman and one for Woman called Sexplanations. During her ‘problem page’ years, she also trained as a psychotherapist and started a small practice in Harley Street, where she still works. She has written 12 non-fiction books including How to Mend a Broken Heart and Get the Happiness Habit. But finally, she has returned to her original love of writing fiction with Who’d Have Thought It? She says: ‘Mid-life women are so fascinating. Having explored their hopes, fears, insecurities and options in my book for female baby boomers, ‘Too Young to Get Old’ I thought it would be fun to fictionalise what I had learned. This book is the result.’ For more information: Website - www.christinewebber.com Twitter - twitter.com/1chriswebber GIVEAWAY For a chance to win a paperback copy of this wonderful book all you have to do is leave a comment below. Looking for a way out, she seeks employment as a lady's maid in the home of the prominent businessman Andrew Carnegie. Soon, the bond between Clara and her employer deepens into love. But when Clara goes missing, Carnegie's search for her unearths secrets and revelations that lay the foundation for his lasting legacy. With captivating insight and stunning heart, Carnegie's Maid tells the story of one lost woman who may have spurred Andrew Carnegie's transformation from ruthless industrialist into the world's first true philanthropist. MY REVIEW CARNEGIE'S MAID by Marie Benedict is a powerful and heartbreaking tale of love and sacrifice at a time when class, power, and social divisions were the most important thing to uphold. With times very tough in Ireland and her family being persecuted by a landlord with his own agenda, Clara Kelly finds herself on the boat to America in the hopes of a better life and future for herself and her family back home. And when she inadvertently ends up as a lady's maid for the wealthy Mrs. Carnegie, Clara knows that she must do whatever it takes to make herself indispensable to her ladyship. But Clara did not expect to find a true friend and fellow intellect in the form of Andrew Carnegie, the eldest son of the family. As they discuss politics, business, and life, Clara and Andrew connect on a deep level and their feelings steadily grow for each other. But life is harsh and for Clara to secure a safe and happy future for her family, she may just have to sacrifice her heart ... I thoroughly enjoyed this historical story even though it broke my heart at times. The poverty in Ireland and America is expertly detailed and adds an important level of depth to the plot. Clara is a wonderful character as she is strong, determined, loyal, and fiercely intelligent in a world which expected women to fade into the background and look pretty. Andrew while not always likeable, is a noble character who saw beyond status to see the real person in Clara, and allowed her to shape him into a more considerate man. I don't know that much about the actual Andrew Carnegie other than that he was a dedicated philanthropist but after reading this fictionalised story I am intrigued to know more about the real man. My only issue with this story is that I would have loved to know more about how Clara's family in Ireland fared but it is only a small gripe. CARNEGIE'S MAID by Marie Benedict is a compelling historical story that will burrow under your skin and ensnare your heart and I cannot wait to read more from this author. Author Bio: Marie Benedict is a lawyer with more than ten years' experience as a litigator at two of the country's premier law firms. She is a magna cum laude graduate of Boston College with a focus in History and Art History, and a cum laude graduate of the Boston University School of Law. While practicing as a lawyer, Marie dreamed of a fantastical job unearthing the hidden historical stories of women -- and finally found it when she tried her hand at writing. She embarked on a new, narratively connected series of historical novels with THE OTHER EINSTEIN, which tells the tale of Albert Einstein's first wife, a physicist herself, and the role she might have played in his theories. Writing as Heather Terrell, Marie also published the historical novels The Chrysalis, The Map Thief, and Brigid of Kildare. ABOUT THE BOOK The Crown of the Andes, one of the world's most precious and beautiful sacred objects, has been stolen right off the stage at Satterling's Auction House in New York City. Five pounds of magnificent baroque gold that ransomed the Inca Ruler Atahaulpa, and hundreds of perfect Colombian emeralds, all gone without a trace! Will this legendary treasure be destroyed for its gold and emeralds? One woman is dead and another one in hot pursuit. MY REVIEW THE MATTER OF THE CROWN by Linda Ferreri is a layered story brimming with historical detail and art references throughout. Taking the reader from the auction houses of Manhattan to the rolling Italian countryside with plenty of stunning scenery in between, we are taken on an adventure to find the Crown of the Andes, a sacred and precious object that has been stolen. But what has this got to do with Avi disappearing from her home in a quiet village? And who will be able to uncover the mystery? While I enjoyed the premise of this story it was a little confusing at the start but persevere and it will all slot into place. I know next to nothing about art and art history so I found the detail and description in this area illuminating, interesting, and it really added to the story. The characters are well-rounded and while I didn't become overly invested in any of them, I still wanted to know how the story would end for them all. Overall I found THE MATTER OF THE CROWN by Linda Ferreri to be a solid story and it would definitely suit anyone who loves the art world. Author Bio: Linda Ferreri is a well-known art lawyer and author. Her books include novels about the Crown of the Anes, a novella entitled The King of UNINI, and whimsical hand-illustrated iBooks. She is known, also, for her drawings. She divides her time between Italy and the United States, and lectures widely around the world about art and history. Her next novel is in progress. ABOUT THE BOOK In 1986, Eddie and his friends are just kids on the verge of adolescence. They spend their days biking around their sleepy little English village and looking for any taste of excitement they can get. The chalk men are their secret code; little chalk stick figures they leave for each other as messages only they can understand. But then a mysterious chalk man leads them right to a dismembered body, and nothing will ever be the same. In 2016, Eddie is fully grown, and thinks he's put his past behind him. But then he gets a letter in the mail, containing a single chalk stick figure. When it turns out his other friends got the same messages, they think it could be a prank... until one of them turns up dead. That's when Eddie realizes that saving himself means finally figuring out what really happened all those years ago. Expertly alternating between flashbacks and the present day, The Chalk Man is the very best kind of suspense novel, one where every character is wonderfully fleshed out and compelling, where every mystery has a satisfying payoff, and where the twists will shock even the savviest reader. MY REVIEW I heard a lot about THE CHALK MAN by C.J. Tudor before I picked it up and it seemed to be everywhere on my twitter feed and Facebook timeline which always leaves me a little anxious when I finally pick the book up to read myself - what if it doesn't live up to the hype? But I can safely say it does live up to its reputation and even surpasses it in my opinion. From a group of kids in 1986 who discover a grisly scene to the adults they have become in the present, this gripping story bends and weaves its way through lies, murder, threats, and unexpected secrets, as the truth about what happened all those years ago finally comes to light. Tense and at times, dark and uncomfortable, there are also moments of nostalgia for an innocent childhood before it all slowly started to go wrong. This story will make you squirm, and make your heart thud harder in your chest, and I devoured it in one go as I just had to know how it all would end. I am purposely not going into too much detail in this review because THE CHALK MAN by C.J. Tudor is a book that you simply must experience for yourself. A superb novel and I look forward to more from this exceptional author. Author Bio: C. J. Tudor was born in Salisbury and grew up in Nottingham, where she still lives with her partner and young daughter. She left school at sixteen and has had a variety of jobs over the years, including trainee reporter, radio scriptwriter, shop assistant, ad agency copywriter and voiceover. In the early nineties, she fell into a job as a television presenter for a show on Channel 4 called Moviewatch. Although a terrible presenter, she got to interview acting legends such as Sigourney Weaver, Michael Douglas, Emma Thompson and Robin Williams. She also annoyed Tim Robbins by asking a question about Susan Sarandon’s breasts and was extremely flattered when Robert Downey Junior showed her his chest. While writing the Chalk Man she ran a dog-walking business, walking over twenty dogs a week as well as looking after her little girl. She’s been writing since she was a child but only knuckled down to it properly in her thirties. Her English teacher once told her that if she ‘did not become Prime Minister or a best-selling author’ he would be ‘very disappointed.’ The Chalk Man was inspired by a tub of chalks a friend bought for her daughter’s second birthday. One afternoon they drew chalk figures all over the driveway. Later that night she opened the back door to be confronted by weird stick men everywhere. In the dark, they looked incredibly sinister. She called to her partner: ‘These chalk men look really creepy in the dark . . .’ She is never knowingly over-dressed. She has never owned a handbag and the last time she wore heels (twelve years ago) she broke a tooth. She loves The Killers, Foo Fighters and Frank Turner. Her favourite venue is Rock City. Her favourite films are Ghostbusters and The Lost Boys. Her favourite authors are Stephen King, Michael Marshall and Harlan Coben. She is SO glad she was a teenager in the eighties. She firmly believes that there are no finer meals than takeaway pizza and champagne, or chips with curry sauce after a night out. Everyone calls her Caz. ABOUT THE BOOK August 1976 and it seems as though the long hot summer will never end. Early morning at Clacton on the north Essex coast, a light aircraft takes off from the airstrip but struggles for height and crashes into the sea. First on the scene, Sgt Cyril Claydon pulls the pilot’s body from the wreckage. But something else catches his eye. A bulky package wrapped in black plastic is on the passenger seat. Returning to investigate, he makes a grim discovery – another body. And so begins a series of events that puts him and others in danger as he is drawn into the investigation, having to work alongside DI ‘Dick’ Barton, a man with totally alien attitudes. Can they work together? MY REVIEW DISPOSAL by David Evans is an intriguing police procedural novel that will capture your interest from the outset and hold it to the end. Set during the long hot summer of 1976, the police department is struggling and needs more men when a curious case lands in their laps. Sgt Cyril Claydon is coming up to retirement when a small aircraft crashes into the sea in front of him. With the pilot dead, an explanation needs to be found, but when a package in the front sea reveals a dead body, this 'accident' takes a far more sinister turn. Finding himself suddenly promoted, Cyril finds himself working with DI Barton, a man known for his differing attitude. Can these two contrasting men work together to uncover the truth? And will they be able to survive the danger they will find themselves in? I found DISPOSAL by David Evans an easy crime fiction read where the story just flowed and there wasn't too much information to keep track of. I enjoyed the relationship between Cyril and Barton and watching it evolve into respect, and I love some good old police work which there is plenty of in this story. All in all, DISPOSAL is a solid story and I will certainly read more from this author. Author Bio: David Evans is a Scots-born writer who found his true love as well as his inspiration for his detective series, set primarily in Wakefield. Having written all his life, in 2012 he decided to go for it – successfully as the next year, in 2013, he was shortlisted for the CWA Debut Dagger Award. The Wakefield Series became an International Bestseller in June 2017 with success in Canada and Australia as well as the UK. But now, whilst the Wakefield Series awaits the next instalment, David Evans has written Disposal, the first in the Tendring Series, a completely new detective series set in north Essex in the 1970s. ABOUT THE BOOK Would your life unravel if someone you knew committed suicide? Theirs did. Faye's heart still belongs to her first love, Jack. She knows he might have moved on, but when she decides to track him down, nothing prepares her for the news that he's taken his own life. With the fragility of life staring them in the face, Abbie finds herself questioning her marriage, and Faye her friendship with Ethan. And poor Olivia is questioning everything - including why Jack's death has hit Beth the hardest. Is she about to take her own life too? MY REVIEW THE SECOND CUP by Sarah Marie Graye is an emotional, thought-provoking debut novel that centres around the sensitive topic of suicide and depression. Faye has never completely forgotten about her University sweetheart Jack and has decided too much time has passed since they were last in contact. But when she tracks him down she is heartbroken and shocked to learn that Jack has killed himself. Discussing it with her other old friends leads each of the other characters on their own journeys as they try to comprehend what has happened - Abbie begins to question her marriage, Faye is determined to find Jack's best friend Ethan, Olivia doesn't know what to think anymore, and Beth takes Jack's death the hardest of all. This novel is raw and tough to read at times as every character's emotions come to the surface and you cannot help but feel their pain and despair. The story is told from different character's points of view, which although a little confusing at the beginning, soon flowed really well and let you get to know everyone on a much deeper level. THE SECOND CUP by Sarah Marie Graye delves into what it is like for those that are left behind when someone takes their own life and in my opinion handles it deftly and carefully, and this is a story that will make you feel and value those you love more than anything else. This novel is a solid and powerful debut and I will certainly read more from Sarah Marie Graye. Author Bio: Sarah Marie Graye was born in Manchester, United Kingdom, in 1975, to English Catholic parents. One of five daughters, to the outside world Sarah Marie's childhood followed a relatively typical Manchester upbringing... until aged 9, when she was diagnosed with depression. It's a diagnosis that has stayed with Sarah Marie over three decades, and something she believes has coloured every life decision. Now in her early 40s, and with an MA Creative Writing from London South Bank University (where she was the vice-chancellor's scholarship holder), Sarah Marie has published her debut novel - about family, friendships and mental health.
