ABOUT THE BOOK
Meet Hendrik Groen. An octogenarian in a care home who has no intention of doing what he's told, or dying quietly. To that end, he creates the Old-But-Not-Dead Club and with his fellow members sets about living his final years with careless abandon. Such anarchism infuriates the care home director but pleases Eefje, the woman who makes Hendrik's frail heart palpitate. If it's never too late to have fun, then can it ever be too late to meet the love of your life?
THE SECRET DIARY OF HENDRIK GROEN 83 1/4 YEARS OLD will make you laugh, sniffle, and take stock of life and see the older generation in your own family in a whole new light.
Hendrik Groen is refusing to grow old quietly and decides to write down his final antics in a diary so that his best friend can read it out at his funeral. Wanting more from his remaining days than stale doughnuts and incontinence, he sets up a club for fellow-minded people like himself that live in the care home. As this mischievous bunch of OAPs dips their toe into the pool of rebellion, it brings the wrath of the care home director, but Hendrik doesn't care as long as it makes Eefje smile...
This story is heartbreakingly beautiful and really had an impact on me as I found myself thinking about Hendrik and his friends after I had finished reading this book. In our hustling and bustling society, the older generation is often forgotten about and ignored, and this story really brought it home that just because you are old does not mean that you don't want to live life to the fullest.
THE SECRET DIARY OF HENDRIK GROEN 83 1/4 YEARS OLD is a wonderful, warm tale that will capture the hearts and minds of readers around the world, and I highly recommend it.
The indomitable Hendrik Groen has become a cultural phenomenon. Now, he and his anonymous creator, whose identity is a fiercely kept secret, are conquering the globe.
