Book Depository - www.bookdepository.com Amazon UK - Dangerous Cargo: An Aidan McRaney Crime Thriller Amazon US - www.amazon.com BLURB Aidan McRaney is trying to stay away from his shadier past in this James Bond style thriller, but the offer of fifteen thousand pounds from Agency boss Nick Lombardi is too good to pass up. Lombardi needs someone to infiltrate the lair of ‘The Widow’. No agent has survived previous missions and Lombardi believes it’s McRaney’s knowledge of the criminal underworld that will give him the edge. An arms dealer, The Widow is in league with the L.A. Mafia and has bought a house on a remote island off the Cornish coast, far enough away from the mainland where the arms can be both smuggled and tested. When Don Giorgio Avonicci arrives, accompanied by his female bodyguard, McRaney finds it’s not just the weapons being tested but his commitment to his wife in London. This is the fourth book in the Aidan McRaney series which began with his release from prison in the book Stalking Aidan. MY REVIEW DANGEROUS CARGO by J.M. Shorney is a gritty, action-packed, fast-paced thriller that will drag you into the shadier aspects of this world we live in, and keep you entertained throughout. Aidan McRaney has paid his dues and served his time for his previous crimes and is trying his best to go straight. With a mortgage, a young wife, and two kids to provide for, he is doing everything he can to build up his landscaping business and make an honest living. But when clients discover his nefarious past, getting work becomes more difficult. When an old acquaintance is gunned down in front of him, Aidan suddenly finds himself thrust back into the criminal underworld, only this time he is working undercover for the good guys - if such a thing exists. But as Aidan gets deeper and deeper into his new life, he will find himself questioning so many things around him, especially himself. With plenty of bloodshed, allegiances, suspense and lies, DANGEROUS CARGO by J.M. Shorney has plenty of twists and turns to hold your attention. While it is the fourth instalment of the series, it was my first encounter with this character and it can easily be read as a standalone, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. BOOK RATING - 📖📖📖📖 4 Author Bio: Jean Shorney is a writer in the South of England. Jean’s books cover a wide range of topics, from horror to gangland, while experimenting with other genres. The modern phenomena of self-publishing has given Jean the opportunity to show her work to a wide audience. Her work has already drawn favourable interest from readers voraciously enjoying the exploits of her characters. Jean grew up in rural West Berkshire, which is a place rife with tales of folklore and lurid ghost stories. These tales ignited the writer’s passion for writing, allowing her to weave her own tales while absorbing books from classics to science fiction. Classics such as Dickens’ works were often given as presents by her family, while Jean sought out writers like Ray Bradbury and Isaac Asimov, which were sourced from places such as the nearby American airbase. Along with these authors, other influences such as Jack Higgins’ thrillers, and classic TV like The Outer Limits and Gunsmoke, really piqued Jean’s interest in different styles or storytelling. Now, following a happy marriage and raising two children, Jean has thrown herself back into her writing, exploring the platforms the Internet is offering. Over one glorious English summer, friendships are forged, secrets are revealed and romance delightfully bursts into bloom. MY REVIEW THE LITTLE CLOCK HOUSE ON THE GREEN by Eve Devon is a thoroughly entertaining and captivating tale of love, family, and new beginnings. Kate Somersby ran away from her family and the community of Whispers Wood four years ago and has never really looked back. But when she hears that the clock house on the green is actually for sale, her old dreams that she had shared with her beloved sister, refuse to be silenced and Kate finds herself homeward bound. At the same time a stranger, Daniel Westlake, is looking for a fresh start for himself, and when he finds himself unexpectedly stranded in Whispers Wood, he spots a fabulous business opportunity with the clock house that is for sale. With two stubborn and determined people vying for the same property, the village splits into sides as Kate and Daniel battle it out to raise funds for the Summer Fete, and the winner gets the clock house. But who will win, and what crazy shenanigans will occur in the process? And is it possible for this delightful community to come together and heal those who need it most? THE LITTLE CLOCK HOUSE ON THE GREEN by Eve Devon is brimming with well-developed characters, a stunning village setting, and has plenty of laughs along the way to make this a truly enchanting read. An excellent start to what is sure to be a delightful series. BOOK RATING - 📖📖📖📖 4.5 Author Bio: Eve Devon writes sexy heroes, sassy heroines & happy ever afters... Growing up in locations like Botswana and Venezuela gave Eve Devon a taste for adventure; her love for romances began when her mother shoved one into her hands in a desperate attempt to keep her quiet during TV coverage of the Wimbledon tennis finals! When Eve wasn't consuming books by the bucketload, she could be found pretending to be a damsel in distress or running around solving mysteries and writing down her adventures. As a teenager, Eve wrote countless episodes of TV detective dramas so the hero and heroine would end up together every week. As an adult, still hooked on romance and mysteries, she worked in a library to conveniently continue consuming books by the bucketload, until realizing she was destined to write contemporary romance and romantic suspense herself. Book length - 368 pages Book Depository - www.bookdepository.com Amazon UK - Larchfield Amazon US - www.amazon.com BLURB It's early summer when a young poet, Dora Fielding, moves to Helensburgh on the west coast of Scotland and her hopes are first challenged. Newly married, pregnant, she's excited by the prospect of a life that combines family and creativity. She thinks she knows what being a person, a wife, a mother, means. She is soon shown that she is wrong. As the battle begins for her very sense of self, Dora comes to find the realities of small town life suffocating, and, eventually, terrifying; until she finds a way to escape reality altogether. Another poet, she discovers, lived in Helensburgh once. Wystan H. Auden, brilliant and awkward at 24, with his first book of poetry published, should be embarking on success and society in London. Instead, in 1930, fleeing a broken engagement, he takes a teaching post at Larchfield School for boys where he is mocked for his Englishness and suspected - rightly - of homosexuality. Yet in this repressed limbo Wystan will fall in love for the first time, even as he fights his deepest fears. The need for human connection compels these two vulnerable outsiders to find each other and make a reality of their own that will save them both. Echoing the depths of Possession, the elegance of The Stranger's Child and the ingenuity of Longbourn, Larchfield is a beautiful and haunting novel about heroism - the unusual bravery that allows unusual people to go on living; to transcend banality and suffering with the power of their imagination. MY REVIEW LARCHFIELD by Polly Clark is an utterly compelling, emotional read with a completely unique storyline. In this novel, we meet Dora, a poet who is recently married, now pregnant, and has recently moved to Helensburgh in Scotland. Hoping that this will be her new beginning where she will finally come into herself, it is not long before Dora realises her mistake. Struggling with her creativity and sense of self, and constantly at odds with her hostile neighbours who seem to influence everyone around them, Dora's positive future is now drowning in sorrow and fear. Discovering that the poet W.H Auden used to live and work in Larchfield, an old boys school in Helensburgh, during the 1930s, gives Dora a link to sanity and herself that she desperately clings to. At the same time, the author also tells us a fictionalised account of the life of Wystan H. Auden's life as a teacher at that time. Forced to conceal his homosexuality, Wystan throws himself into his poetry which is garnering much success, but when he falls in love, he is forced to confront his non-existent life that seems completely unfulfilled. Wanting to change the world around them, Wystan and Dora make a connection as they try to become their true selves in a world of their own making, but will they be brave enough to find their way back to their own realities. LARCHFIELD by Polly Clark has a sense of foreboding and hostility throughout, and even though there are distressing and heartbreaking moments at times, the deeply evocative characters pull you in deeper and deeper into their world until you no longer want to leave. Interspersed with the beauty of poetry throughout, LARCHFIELD by Polly Clark is a stunning portrait of what life can become when you struggle to be who you really are, and undoubtedly the beauty and fragility of love. A hauntingly hypnotic read. BOOK RATING - 📖📖📖📖📖 5 Author Bio: Polly Clark was born in Toronto and lives in Helensburgh on Scotland’s west coast, close to where W.H. Auden wrote The Orators. She is Literature Programme Producer for Cove Park, Scotland’s International Artist Residency Centre, and the author of three poetry collections. She won the MsLexia Prize for Larchfield, the Eric Gregory Award, and has been shortlisted for the TS Eliot Prize. Larchfield will be published by Quercus under their riverrun imprint March 2017. Her pamphlet A Handbook for the Afterlife was shortlisted in the 2016 Michael Marks Awards and a volume of New and Selected Poems, Afterlife, is due in 2018. Book length - 417 pages Book Depository - www.bookdepository.com Amazon UK - Silent Child Amazon US - www.amazon.com BLURB In the summer of 2006, Emma Price watched helplessly as her six-year-old son’s red coat was fished out of the River Ouse. It was the tragic story of the year – a little boy, Aiden, wandered away from school during a terrible flood, fell into the river, and drowned. His body was never recovered. Ten years later, Emma has finally rediscovered the joy in life. She’s married, pregnant, and in control again... ... until Aiden returns. Too traumatized to speak, he raises endless questions and answers none. Only his body tells the story of his decade-long disappearance. The historic broken bones and injuries cast a mere glimpse into the horrors Aiden has experienced. Aiden never drowned. Aiden was taken. As Emma attempts to reconnect with her now teenage son, she must unmask the monster who took him away from her. But who, in their tiny village, could be capable of such a crime? It's Aiden who has the answers, but he cannot tell the unspeakable. This dark and disturbing psychological novel will appeal to fans of The Widow and The Butterfly Garden. MY REVIEW In the small town of Bishoptown-on-Ouse, it is during a flash flood that Emma's simple life will be destroyed forever. For it is the day that her little boy Aiden suddenly disappears, presumed to be drowned. Distraught, heartbroken and utterly destroyed, it will take Emma a long time before she can even contemplate trying to live her life again, but after almost ten years since Aiden's tragic death, Emma now finds herself in love and pregnant with some sort of future to look forward to. But what if Aiden didn't drown that day? What if someone took him? When a teenage Aiden returns to Emma broken and unable to communicate, Emma will do whatever it takes to uncover the truth about what devastating horrors her beautiful boy has had to endure. But will she be able to handle the truth? This is my first time reading Sarah A. Denzil but it will certainly not be my last. With a dark and disturbing atmosphere throughout, SILENT CHILD can be uncomfortable and distressing at times (especially as I am a mum and storylines like this tend to really upset me), but it is also compelling and written in such a way that the reader just has to discover exactly what happened to Aiden. I became attached to the characters and just had to get to the end as fast as I could. SILENT CHILD by Sarah A. Denzil is a powerfully troubling, sinister, psychological thriller that will linger in your mind long after you have finished reading it. BOOK RATING - 📖📖📖📖 4.5 Author Bio: Sarah A. Denzil is a British suspense writer from Derbyshire. In her alternative life—AKA YA author Sarah Dalton—she writes speculative fiction for teenagers, including The Blemished, Mary Hades and White Hart. Sarah lives in Yorkshire with her partner, enjoying the scenic countryside and rather unpredictable weather. Saving April, Sarah’s debut suspense thriller, is a psychological look into the minds of the people around us whom we rarely even consider—our neighbours. Book Depository - www.bookdepository.com Amazon UK - There Is Always More To Say Amazon US - www.amazon.com BLURB A heartfelt novel about the connections that bring people together. Soho 1984: Two people meet and their worlds are changed forever. An unexpected meeting - a look that means their lives will never be the same again. In There Is Always More To Say Lynda Spiro chronicles the lives of the couple through friendships, marriage, fleeting moments and snatched time. It is a passionate account about a connection between two people that never dies even when tested by distance and when life throws the unexpected at their feet. "The meeting of two personalities is like the contact of two chemical substances. If there is any reaction both are transformed." C G Jung MY REVIEW THERE IS ALWAYS MORE TO SAY by Lynda Young Spiro is not your typical read with its unusual layout and take, on storytelling. Told in the first person we discover a deep and meaningful relationship that has shaped the narrator's life, but as names and gender aren't made obvious throughout this tale, we are never fully sure who the narrator is. The story continues in what can be described as one long conversation one might have with themselves as they recollect the past and the events and people that have shaped them as a person and has had an impact on their life. This is more than just an old flame as the narrator has never lost this deep connection with this other person, even though time, distance, marriage, and kids has separated them for so long. THERE IS ALWAYS MORE TO SAY by Lynda Young Spiro is a unique and quirky short story with quotes interspersed throughout, and although confusing at some points, is worth a read. BOOK RATING - 📖📖📖 3.5 Author Bio: Lynda Young Spiro is a mixed media artist whose love of textiles, found objects and recyclable materials are incorporated into her colourful work. With plenty of twists, turns, and holy crap moments throughout, THE WRONG TURN by NC Marshall will have you second guessing all of the characters involved as well as yourself, as you try to figure out who is behind it all. THE WRONG TURN by NC Marshall is an excellent novel for those who love suspense, action, and characters that will get under your skin. And the setting is perfect too. A fantastic 5 star read for me! Book length - 400 pages Book Depository - www.bookdepository.com Amazon UK - The Returning Tide Amazon US - www.amazon.com BLURB Two sisters and one betrayal that will carry across generations... In wartime Cornwall, 1943, a story between two sisters begins - the story of Adele and Amelia, and the heart-breaking betrayal that will divide them forever. Decades later, the efforts of one reckless act still echo - but how long will it be until their past returns? The Returning Tide will sweep you away to the beautiful Cornish coast, full of secrets and mystery, and will be loved by fans of Kate Morton and Rachel Hore. MY REVIEW I had high hopes for this novel as I have read all of Liz Fenwick's books to date and always enjoyed them, but THE RETURNING TIDE exceeded all of my expectations . Brimming with emotion, love, family, and the beauty of Cornwall, set against the backdrop of the War, we are drawn into the lives of twin sisters Amelia and Adele. Identical in every way, yet opposites in temperament and personality, we share their lives as they work as Wrens, and follow their highs and lows in love and loss. But one act will alter their lives forever and echo into the present in ways nobody thought possible. Jump forward to the present day in America where Lara is at a crossroads in her life - divorced, unemployed, and reeling from the death of her beloved great-grandfather - she decides to travel to Cornwall to uncover the mystery surrounding her great-grandmother, and understand what happened to her great-grandfather when he was stationed there during the war. As the story switches from the past to present, an emotional tale of heartbreak and sacrifice unfolds in front of our eyes, and I am warning you now, you will shed tears, as the scars from history are brought out into the open to heal those who need it in the present. THE RETURNING TIDE by Liz Fenwick is a powerful novel that brings the reality of war, loss, heartbreak, and ultimately love, to life for the reader, and all of it eloquently written with the sophisticated style and flair that is synonymous with Liz Fenwick. If you haven't already guessed, I love this book - I love the compelling characters, it's history, it's exquisite detail, and most importantly the emotional connection that I felt with the story throughout. This book is a triumph, and one that would translate beautifully onto our tv screens (here's hoping!). Book length - 297 pages Book Depository - www.bookdepository.com Amazon UK - Miss Treadway & the Field of Stars Amazon US - www.amazon.com BLURB How do you find a missing actress in a city where everyone’s playing a role? A mystery, a love-story and a darkly beguiling tale of secrets and reinvention set in 1960s London. ‘FABULOUS!’ Helen Simonson, author of Major Pettigrew’s Last Stand Soho, 1965. In a tiny two-bed flat above a Turkish café on Neal Street lives Anna Treadway, a young dresser at the Galaxy Theatre. When the American actress Iolanthe Green disappears after an evening’s performance at the Galaxy, the newspapers are wild with speculation about her fate. But as the news grows old and the case grows colder, it seems Anna is the only person left determined to find out the truth. Her search for the missing actress will take her into an England she did not know existed: an England of jazz clubs and prison cells, backstreet doctors and seaside ghost towns, where her carefully calibrated existence will be upended by violence but also, perhaps, by love. For in order to uncover Iolanthe’s secrets, Anna is going to have to face up to a few of her own… MY REVIEW MISS TREADWAY & THE FIELD OF STARS by Miranda Emmerson is a deeply emotive mystery that will make you stop in your tracks, and soak in every word and description. Anna Treadway is working as a dresser for Iolanthe Green when Iolanthe disappears one evening after a show, and Anna fears for her safety. As time passes and it looks like nobody cares about Iolanthe anymore, Anna takes the matter into her own hands and begins her own investigation, which will open her eyes to a more realistic and harsh side of London and the people who live there. From deep rooted hate and animosity, to finding new connections that may not make sense but exist nevertheless, we follow Anna and a motley crew of assorted characters as they travel far and wide to piece together the puzzle of the mystery that is Iolanthe, discovering some honest and sometimes uncomfortable truths about themselves in the process. MISS TREADWAY & THE FIELD OF STARS by Miranda Emmerson is filled with excellent characters (if not always likeable) and perfectly depicts the different sides of London's personality, both beautiful and terrifying, and I thoroughly enjoyed reading it. The ending was a little bit abrupt for me but only because I really wanted to learn more about what happens to Anna in the future - I'm greedy like that! BOOK RATING - 📖📖📖📖 4.5 Author Bio: I am an author and dramatist. I grew up in London before studying English at Oxford and Playwriting Studies at Birmingham University. I now live in the Vale of Glamorgan in south Wales with my husband and our two daughters. My travel and food memoir Fragrant Heart was published by Summersdale in 2014.
